Printed Jeans and Basic Tees | Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC and Micro Regan

Jeans are a frequently worn option in winter for me. I do try mix things up a little in my effort to stay away from blue jeans. I have a few colourful pairs, and some really fun printed pairs. I'm wearing two printed jeans below, in a monochromatic outfit and a second more colourful one. Although I'm wearing different prints and colours, I kept to a simple outfit formula in both outfits with basic tees and cosy cardigans.

Why I wore it:

No scarf as this was a rather warm winter day! In fact, when we came out of ABA mother's group and we went to grab some groceries, I took the cardigan off as it was a really warm winter afternoon. It was nice to enjoy the sunshine briefly.

I thrifted this tee a while back to replace a plain black v-neck one that I'd destroyed in the wash, and realised this hadn't been worn in a while. With the space dye print being similar to the lines on the chevron print of these jeans, I thought they would look quite nice together. I was worried the print mix was a little bold, definitely bolder than I expected when I put it on, so to keep things simple I added a plain black cardigan over the top. I'd planned to add my mustard cardigan, to match my mustard Rebecca Minkoff Micro Regan bag, but I think the black worked perfectly. It let my little bag be the touch of colour with the outfit.

I felt the silver shoes tied in nicely with the monochrome outfit, even if the necklace was gold and the bag was mustard. Really liked how well the printed jeans handled messy food covered toddler hands at the ABA mothers group too, ha! Prints are so good for disguising finger marks!

Christmas In July Boxswap!

Why I wore it:

Another day with the boys, another chance to use the same outfit formula with another pair of printed jeans. I was surprised to realise I hadn't worn this blue marle tee with the pink leopard print jeans before, I really like blue and pink together! As the outfit felt a bit bold, I thought a neutral grey cardigan would be the best layer to add. Kept me cosy too, as this is wool.

With the neutral white Converse shoes as well it was looking like a good outfit, but I decided to go even bolder with the hot pink mini MAC bag. While an even brighter shade of pink than on the leopard print jeans, it really popped and just made the outfit for me. I tried doubling the strap over a little to make it a little shorter. I do that frequently with my Rebecca Minkoff Love bag. This mini MAC is not as structured though, and the soft leather pulled a big, as you can see in the close up shot. I don't think I'll try that again!

Again, a slightly warmer day so I went without a scarf. We spent most of our time indoors too, running a couple errands and taking the boys to rhyme time at the library.

How You Can Wear It:

Printed jeans are easy to pair with basic tees, and neutral cardigans if the weather is cooler. You don't have to stick to neturals though! While the first monochrome outfit works, the second outfit follows the same formula but with more colourful pieces. Don't be afraid to add more colour to a printed piece.  You can stick with a colour combination you already love to make it easy.

Colourful Winter Dressing: Printed Jeans with Pink and Cobalt

I love blue and pink together, so I like to wear it year-round. While I do tend to wear more neutrals in winter (it makes layering easy as everything goes), it's nice to add a little bit of colour or a fun print to your outfit sometimes. The cobalt leather jacket I'm wearing in the outfits below is both cosy and colourful, and paired with pink it makes for a cheerful winter outfit.

A neutral bag is an essential in both outfits while I have so much else going on with the prints and colour.

Why I wore it:

Had a busy but kid-free few hours when I wore this. The beading on this ombre tank is beautiful but I worry about how it will hold up with tiny little grabby hands so it's been a while since it was last worn! I was pregnant with Baby Boy when I last wore it. 😲 Definitely a piece that feels more special and doesn't get worn for everyday stay at home mum duties.

When I was thinking of what to wear and putting this outfit together I worried it maybe had a little too much going on, with the beaded ombre tank, bright cobalt jacket and printed jeans. But I loved this final outfit. The neutral Balenciaga bag was a good choice so it didn't compete with all the print and colour. I was happy and comfortable all day, despite running late to almost every appointment, oops.

Why I wore it:

This was what I wore for the instagram style challenge prompt of 'shop your wardrobe'. Which applies to every outfit I've worn since my last purchase in December! I didn't plan anything special to meet the style challenge prompt for the day, I just wanted to wear this tank and the leopard print jeans together as I thought it would be a nice combination.

Again I went with a neutral bag, the metallic mini MAC, as my outfit felt quite busy already with the colours and print together. I felt completely different in this outfit compared to the one above though. I'd been so sure about this as I planned it out in my head, only to put it on in the morning and felt it was missing something. I added the necklace but I'm still not sure that was what the outfit needed - maybe a scarf instead.

As we were running late for books and rhymes at the library I just wore it anyway. Not one of the worst outfits I've worn, as I didn't completely hate it, just another of those cases where the outfit doesn't look as good as you think it will in your head! I did really like the cobalt jacket and leopard print jeans together at least - I'll have to try that again soon.

How You Can Wear It:

While neutral layers are practical and make winter layering easy, you can have some fun with your outfit by adding more colour, as statement print, or both! If you're experimenting with colour and prints in your outfit, you might want to pick a classic neutral handbag that won't compete for attention.

Summer tanks can be a fun addition to your winter wardrobe, and with the right layers can be worn year round. While I'm wearing a colourful leather jacket above, a bright cardigan or scarf would work just as well to add more colour. Printed jeans can also be worn year-round to add another element of interest to your outfits.

Bright Maxi Dresses, Rebecca Minkoff Cross Body Bags

I've been wearing my Rebecca Minkoff bags a lot! They are perfect for wearing cross body, allowing me to be hands-free which is essential for chasing after a toddler.

Why I wore it:

After a busy morning rushing around trying to get everything cleaned and organised, we had a wonderfully relaxed afternoon. We had a few friends around for a BBQ, so I knew I wanted to wear this maxi dress. It makes such a simple outfit. Comfortable and just as perfect during pregnancy as it is post-baby, plus I love the colour.

I've worn the magenta dress and purple bag together before, it's a colour combination I really like.

Why I wore it:

In contrast to the outfit above, when I wore this dress I hadn't been planning the outfit in advance. I threw this on because it was hot and humid and despite feeling terrible, I had to take toddler T and myself to the doctors as we were both unwell. The maxi dress seemed like the easiest option to be as unrestricted as possible. The wonderful air conditioning at the doctors was a welcome reprieve from the heat too.

Kept the accessories simple - my metallic mini MAC bag and House of Harlow necklace which always look good together.

Textured Jackets and Tiered Dresses

Making the most of warmer winter days in Brisbane by layering up some lighter dresses with a couple of heavier jackets to combat the chill in the mornings and evenings. These Kmart tiered midi dresses are wardrobe staples for me, and something I've had on frequent repeat in the warmer weather. With the addition of some textured jackets, they work into winter too.

Why I wore it:

Wore this to celebrate mother's day with the family. In the afternoon we headed down the coast for a pizza night at my parents. It was a lot of fun! This bright fuchsia pink tiered midi dress is a firm favourite of mine, and I love how it looks with blue, so the blue beaded necklace and quilted Edie shoulder bag were obvious pairings with it. Because we were having dinner and I knew it would be colder at night, I wore this jacquard jacket that hadn't been worn in a while. I liked the texture and stripes against the plain block colour of the dress. 

Comfortable Converse for the drive down the coast too.

Why I wore it:

Since I liked the outfit above so much, I pulled out one of my other Kmart tiered midi dresses to recreate a similar look, again with Converse, and another textured jacket from my wardrobe. With the black necklace, black Converse and black jacket, I wasn't sure the orange dress was the best choice at first. I always worry too much orange and black together is Halloween-ish. But I ended up really liking this outfit. 

It was a school run and work from home day, so I only needed to carry this little Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC bag for all my essentials. I liked the neutral silver against the orange dress too.

Navy Dresses And Metallic Accessories

Wearing two navy dresses with metallic accessories for two different spring days recently.

What I wore:

Earrings: neutral clay disc earrings

Bracelets: the usual plus Polka Luka resin bangles in red and yellow and orange

Why I wore it:

We spent the afternoon down the coast with my parents, so I dressed up this go-to floral print Jaase dress with the metallic gold envelope clutch and the rose gold sandals. Even though the shades of gold don't match I felt they were far enough apart that they worked. I hadn't worn these resin bracelets for a while so got them out again - I liked the yellow, red and orange as it was similar to the autumn leaves in the print of the dress.

Instead of adding a necklace, just went with some large but slightly hard to see earrings, these circular ones are a lovely mix of neutrals but it means they get a bit hidden in my hair!

This was a much busier day than the day above! I changed my hours for working from home so I could start and finish up a little earlier - had to take Cooper to the vets and then I had to pick the kids up from school to take them to the dentist in the afternoon. Needed a nice simple outfit, so went with this Kmart navy tiered dress that I'm surprised hasn't been worn more recently, I love it!

Just like the outfit above, I added metallic accessories with the silver Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC bag, and the silver necklace. Comfortable sneakers with the Adidas Superstar for a bit of driving around, and the denim jacket because it was a little too cold a spring day to wear this short sleeve dress with bare arms and legs.

What To Wear On Days Out With Kids: Model Railway With Printed Tank, Denim Shorts, Kimono

I titled this post what to wear on days out with kids, but honestly this was my staple stay at home mum style for any days with the boys over summer. Shorts, tanks and kimonos. Perfection!

Why I wore it:

Despite the heat, I had to wear closed in shoes, so I went with my trusty Converse. I don't like wearing closed in shoes on hot days, but those were the rules! We surprised the boys with a trip to the local model railway club, Brisbane Bayside Steam Railway Society. It had been a tough few weeks so I thought a day out was a nice idea.

I've included the video below, the model railway society have a track set up at a park (1900 Wynnum Road) and you can ride on miniature versions of trains. For my train mad boys, it was perfect. We went around a few times, trying out the different trains. So much fun for them. There's a little model race track setup for remote control cars too so we spent some time there before heading away to get lunch.

I knew I'd need a bit of physical sunblock too for being out in the sun, so I added this white kimono over the top of my printed tank and denim shorts. With the gold in the tank, the rose gold filigree heart necklace seemed like a good accessory, as well as the 'harvest gold' / mustard micro Regan bag.

While I did take the Converse off as soon as I got home, the rest of the outfit stayed on. I wore it to film a couple YouTube videos while hubby occupied the boys.

Since I liked the outfit above so much, recreated it again with the same kimono, but different tank and shorts. And different shoes! Havaianas are much better suited to the hot Queensland weather! Swapped the micro Regan bag for my silver mini MAC bag too.

We had a few things to do on this day. I took the boys to a messy play day at playgroup in the morning, then we had the doctors in the afternoon. Not quite as much fun as the day out on the miniature railway, but the boys always enjoy playgroup, especially if it's a messy play day!

Unlike the outfit above, I expected to be holding squirming kids on my lap at least some point in the doctor's waiting room, so I went with a more kid friendly necklace! My boys are passed the teething stage but I still like these silicone teething necklaces as they are safe for them to play with and tug on and I know they won't break them!

Printed Tanks Under $50

How You Can Wear It:

Printed tanks and denim shorts are a comfortable stay at home mum outfit for me in the warmer weather. If you need to add a little physical sunblock, try adding a plain kimono. It's breezy fabric won't overheat you, even on a warm day. The beauty of a printed tank outfit is that just by swapping one tank for another, you change the whole outfit by just changing the print you're wearing. A good way to keep your outfits feeling fresh and new without buying anything extra.

Two Ways to Wear: Navy Printed Kimono

October is 'Buy Nothing New Month' and although I blew that challenge when I shopped the latest Shopbop sale, it did make me head to the opshop (thrift store) first when I felt like getting another kimono. Now it's spring I've started to wear mine again and thought another would be a good addition to my wardrobe. I managed to pick up this pretty navy one below in the first store I looked in, so it was meant to be!

Why I wore it:

Suddenly summer temperatures arrived in Brisbane and it was a good reason to get my shorts collection out again! It's been a long time since I last wore these, as I was pregnant last spring/summer. Couldn't resist a little bit of print mixing with the striped tank, and although the print on this kimono doesn't have any pink in it I thought the neon bag was nice with the navy.

The style challenge for the day was "reward yourself" so wearing my new-to-me purchase seemed fitting. I'd managed to get a rare amount of time to search through a couple of local opshops which was rewarding enough, but really wanted to have a productive trip. The great thing about kimonos is that you can pretty much ignore the size on the label. I was glad when I found this one, even though it's not my size, as it just looks oversized like a regular kimono.

After a couple days of more spring-like weather I decided to wear my jeans again. I realised this was a mistake when we got to playgroup though - it was such a hot day, really wish I'd gone with shorts! I did like the colourful kimono and teething necklace against the black and grey. The outfit was just a little too warm to sit outside with the boys comfortably. I changed as soon as we got back home.

The style challenge for the day was delicate - but I couldn't think of anything delicate to wear that would stand up to a morning at playgroup with an energetic bunch of toddlers and a drooly, grabby baby!


Two years ago I decided to look more critically at things I was adding to my wardrobe. After I've worn something twice I do a purchase review. It helps me identify when I'm buying the right things or the wrong things and will hopefully stop me accumulating items in my wardrobe that sit there with tags on months later. It's worked well so far, with the odd exception.

My purchase review of this kimono:
I know I didn't need another kimono. I already have two other blue ones, and a grey one with a similar floral and bird print. However I know from last spring/summer and our heatwave plagued autumn that kimonos are one of the pieces I wear consistently in the warmer weather, so I'm confident this will get used a lot. It was just $7 so I'm certain to get my money's worth. It's sure to be worn a lot.
