30 Ways to Wear: Target Navy And White Stripe Maxi Skirt

This Target navy striped maxi skirt was definitely overdue a 30 ways to wear post. I consider maxi skirts a staple in my mum wardrobe and this one goes with, and has been worn with, everything! I had trouble narrowing it down to just 30 outfits to share today.

What Is The 30 Wears Challenge?

Something I picked up from The True Cost documentary, where to reduce the environmental impact of fashion purchases, we should endeavour to wear everything we buy at least 30 times. Each month I share the different ways I've managed to do that with an item from my wardrobe, by looking back at all the daily outfit photos I've taken and shared on the blog over the years!

30 Ways to Wear: Navy Striped Maxi Skirt

30 wears challenge ways to wear a navy striped jersey maxi skirt outfit ideas away from the blue blog

Blue is my favourite colour, I always find it so wearable! And navy is a true neutral that goes with everything, so it's not surprising that this skirt has gotten a lot of wear. While the side splits do mean I can't really wear this skirt in winter as it's a little chilly, I do heavily wear it over spring and summer, and it works in autumn too. I have even layered it up a little for winter a couple of times, before realising it should really be more of a warm weather piece!

Cost Per Wear

I struggle to calculate cost per wear on this skirt because my mum bought it for me! I don't remember the cost but similar skirts at Target are around $25 so I assume it was that price or less back in 2016 when she bought it. At 33 documented wears on the blog, assuming it was $25, that's a cost per wear of around 75 cents! Pretty good going! I've definitely worn this skirt more than it's been shared on the blog too, as I have some photos of me wearing it during baby boy's hospital stay, so it's really over 36 wears.

Here are just some of the ways I've worn it:

Simple Tank and Striped Skirt Outfits

3 simple tank and striped maxi skirt outfit ideas for mums | awayfromblue

On a summer day a plain tank and a striped maxi skirt is an easy outfit for beating the heat, especially if the maxi skirt has side slits like this one does. In each of these 3 outfits I haven't deviated much with the colours in the tanks close to the colours in the skirt, but brighter coloured tanks do work equally well.

White Tees and Navy Striped Maxi Skirt Outfits

4 ways to wear white tee and striped navy maxi skirt outfits| awayfromblue

Navy and white stripes? Try wearing it with more white! I don't have a lot of white in my wardrobe but I do love wearing the few white tees I have with this striped maxi!

Navy Striped Maxi Skirt With Purple

navy striped maxi skirt with purple 4 outfit ideas | awayfromtheblue

Blue and purple is a colour combination I really love, and despite the different shades and amounts of purple here, from the tank, tee or even the purple scarf and bag, they all work with the navy stripes.

Red Tops With Navy Striped Maxi Skirt

4 ways to wear a navy striped maxi skirt with red tops | awayfromtheblue blog

Red and navy is a nice and colourful combination! While this is a navy and white striped skirt with 4 different red tops, I don't think the outfit looks too American flag-like as the white stripes are smaller than the navy ones. I think with a differently striped skirt this might look a little like a 4th July outfit! But to me these 4 outfits work.

Outfits Wearing Yellow With A Navy Striped Maxi Skirt

3 ways to wear a navy striped maxi skirt with yellow | awayfromtheblue

Yellow and blue are such a cheerful combination! A bright yellow tee really pops against navy, but a little mustard yellow bag like I'm wearing there in the second and third outfits can be a smaller way to introduce such a bright colour to your outfit.

Pink and Navy Outfit Ideas With Striped Maxi Skirt

navy striped maxi skirt with pink 3 outfits | awayfromblue blog

Another fun combination, pink and blue! Just like with the other colours I've shared here, again multiple shades work with the neutral navy skirt. A pink tee is a nice outfit option, but as above, a bag works just as well. I really like the blush pink bag in the first outfit with this navy maxi skirt.

Tonal Blue Outfit Ideas With A Striped Maxi Skirt

3 monochromatic tonal blue otufit ideas with navy striped maxi skirt | awayfromblue

The easiest monochrome outfits for me to pull together are blue ones, as it's my favourite colour and I have a lot of it in my wardrobe! Each of the blue tops I've worn in these 3 outfits are different shades of blue but they all pair nicely with the navy. The first outfit is completely monochromatic with all the blue, but I've used accessories in the second and third outfits to add a little extra colour.

Layering Navy Striped Maxi Skirt With a Denim Jacket

3 ways to wear navy striped maxi skirt in autumn with denim jacket | awayfromblue

When the weather cools I like to maximise how often I can wear this skirt, so throwing a simple denim jacket on top is a good way to do that. A denim jacket and maxi skirt work well for early autumn or spring days when there's a bit of chill in the air.

Grey Tees and Navy Striped Maxi Skirt Outfits

3 outfit ideas with grey tees and navy striped maxi skirt converse | awayfromtheblue

Throwing in a bonus 3 outfits there at the end that I've only shared on Instagram before. Illustrating that I've almost worn every grey tee in my wardrobe with this skirt and that it really is a staple! It was one of the pieces I packed for my younger son's hospital stay one December a few years ago. Extremely comfortable to wear for that!

What I Bought In September (And How I've Worn It)

Sharing two things I bought in September - lucky opshop finds! No video this time, just some photos, as it was only two thrifted things.

What I Bought:

I couldn't resist picking these up at the opshop sale! We wandered in just for a little browse, with nothing in particular in mind to buy (although I was, as always, hoping to find a couple books for the kids and I). Nothing really appealed but I did see this cute little skirt hanging off the end of the rack when we passed the women's clothing section and for $1 I had to have it! I remember skirts like these being popular quite a while ago back in my uni days. Luckily, this one has a fully elasticated waist so I can wear on my hips and it doesn't feel too short. Not like the high waisted mini skirts I remember wearing when I was younger in the pre-blog days! Still just as fun to wear, just a little longer and so more practical for running around with the kids.

The necklace was another piece I just stumbled across - they have accessories right next to the registers and this designer inspired clover necklace from Mix Apparel was just $2, new with tags. I've gone to look up the website though and I can't see Mix Apparel any more or find out what happened to it (my local Coles store never sold it). For my non-Aussie followers it was a fashion brand you could buy in a supermarket here, not sure if you still can. For just $2 though it's a cute necklace!

How I've Worn It:

I really wasn't expecting to hit my "wear everything twice in the month I buy it" goal with this little ruffle skirt. But some summer like spring days after I bought this skirt gave me the opportunity to wear it almost right away! The necklace was an easy piece to hit that two wears in the month goal with too, I think it pairs nicely against plain block colour clothing pieces.

How I'm Tracking:

I was hoping as September was the last month of the Slow Fashion Season #FashionDetox to buy nothing, but didn't succeed. Although second hand shopping is allowed under the challenge I would have liked to finish with a no buy month! But couldn't pass up these two impulse buys. Not a bad track record for the 3 month challenge though, with nothing bought in July, a second hand bag in September and now these 2 thrift finds. Only 3 things total and all allowed under the rules.

With my spend for 2020 being pretty low and a lot of impulse buys (and bags!) this year, I'm surprisingly still under my 2020 spending limit at the end of September. Really hoping I can stick to that though as I'm getting close to matching what I spent last year already. I only spent $483.59 on fashion in 2020 though so I have a pretty tight budget to spend less than that this year!

30 Ways To Wear: Billabong Red Printed Maxi Skirt

So thrilled to finally feature this pretty red printed maxi skirt in its own 30 wears post! I thrifted it back in 2017 and I'm just surprised it's taken me this long to hit over 30 wears with it. It feels like it's such a constantly worn staple for me! Definitely overdue a post celebrating all the ways I have worn it. You can wear a bright red maxi skirt in quite a few ways surprisingly. It's more versatile than you think!

30 Ways To Wear: Red Printed Maxi Skirt

30 ways to wear billabong red printed boho maxi skirt | away from blue blog

I'm not someone who has a lot of red in my wardrobe so I'm surprised by how much of a staple this skirt has become for me! While I do tend to wear it with a lot of blue, it's also encouraged me to try other colours now and then. The yellow in the boho print has made me branch out and try red and yellow together in bolder combos which I really like, and I just love how light and floaty this skirt is for summer. This slight high low hem ensures it always catches a breeze, and while it can make it tricky to photograph it makes it so fun to wear. So glad I found it!

Cost Per Wear

I thrifted this skirt at the end of my no shop challenge in 2017, after successfully not shopping for 7 months. From my favourite, but sadly now permanently closed opshop, it was just $3. At 31 wears that makes it just under 9 cents a wear. Pretty good value for a second hand skirt that's still going strong and will continue to be in my wardrobe for quite some time! For full disclosure, I did pay to have this skirt altered, because I'm petite and it's a full length maxi skirt. I don't remember how much I paid to calculate full cost including alterations but it was definitely less than $30 to it to be shortened for me so still under $1 per wear. Here are the 30 favourite ways I've worn it:

Red Maxi Skirt and Neutral Tees

red printed maxi skirt worn 4 ways with neutral tees | awayfromtheblue

Of course the most obvious choice for a bold bright printed piece like this maxi skirt is to wear it with neutrals. It is a very easy way to wear it; with a grey, white, or black tee. You can always add a little extra colour with another layer or accessory as I've done in some of these outfits too.

Red Maxi Skirt With Blue

5 outfit ideas different shades of blue navy with red printed maxi skirt | awayfromblue

I mentioned above I wear this skirt with blue a lot - any shade of blue really! Blue is my favourite colour so I have a lot of it in my wardrobe and luckily this bright cheerful red pairs so nicely with every different blue shade, from pastels to navy.

Matchy-Matchy With Red Printed Maxi Skirt and Red Handbag

3 outfit ideas of a red bag matching and worn with a red printed maxi skirt | awayfromblue

I do like being matchy-matchy and have worn my red bags with this red skirt a few times, although they do get a little lost in these outfits. Contrasting bags are definitely something I wear more commonly with this skirt. You could try matching other pieces too, like a bracelet, shoes or necklace to avoid the pieces blending together like these bags do with the skirt.

Red Printed Maxi Skirt With Yellow

red printed maxi skirt worn 3 ways with yellow and mustard | awayfromblue blog

When you have a printed piece like this skirt, an fail-safe way to find things to wear it with is to pull out a colour from the print. And with the yellow design printed on the skirt, so many shades of yellow I've worn with this work well. Mustard is definitely my favourite though!

Red Printed Maxi Skirt With Striped Tees

3 different stripe tee outfit ideas with red boho print maxi skirt | awayfromtheblue

It's fun to try a little bit of print mixing now and then. While I didn't equally love all of these striped tees with the red maxi skirt, I do think stripes are the best for print mixing with. Stripes made an easy choice when I wanted to try something different and wear a printed top with this skirt.

Red Printed Maxi Skirt and Graphic Tee Outfits

5 ways to wear red printed maxi skirt with graphic tees outfits | away from blue

Graphic tees are a staple for a causal wardrobe like mine and they work well with maxi skirts, even if they are printed like this one.

Red Printed Maxi Skirt and Knit Outfits

3 ways to wear a red printed maxi skirt in winter with knits | awayfromtheblue

This skirt is so light and perfect for summer - but I enjoy wearing it in cooler weather too. With mild Brisbane winters, pairing a maxi skirt and knit together is an easy cosy outfit for warmer winter day.

Red Printed Maxi Skirt and Denim Jackets Outfits

4 different denim jacket outfit ideas with a red printed maxi skirt | awayfromblue blog

A denim jacket is a staple in everyone's wardrobe and it works so well with a maxi skirt! I really like the blue denim jackets with this red skirt, but different colours like the white denim jacket work just as well.

What I Bought In February And How I've Worn It: Second Hand Finds

After a big spend in January, I really wasn't intending on spending anything in February. However I couldn't resist just a little browse in the opshop when we passed by and ended up buying a couple of things! This month everything I got was second hand.

What I Bought:

Why I Bought It:

We were walking by the opshop when my son noticed the door was ajar and ran in so how could I say no? 😂 We did the usual checkout of books and toys before I had a small browse of the clothes. With nothing particularly in mind but an extra 50% off summer stock I tried a few things on. Being petite maxi skirts are hard to find - in regular stores as well as opshops! - so I wasn't sure these would fit well. So pleased to find out that they don't need any alteration! I suspect that the ochre maxi skirt is actually a midi skirt, but it's a maxi length on me. It's a beautiful shade - couldn't tell if it was more rust or mustard, and it seems to change colours in different lights! I think it's a true ochre.

I'm a little annoyed that the navy maxi skirt doesn't have any labels other than the fabric tag saying it's viscose as it's so soft and such a good fabric for summer. Such a great find and it's a shame I don't know the brand to be able to hunt out more!

The jeans are a little difficult to explain - an impulse buy when it was cooler with the wild weather and I wondered if I should get some jeans. I stumbled across these at a great price on eBay and was excited to get them. However when they arrived they were not in the condition the auction made them out to be. I emailed the seller with pics of the disappointing condition and asked if I could try wash them or if they wanted me to return them without trying anything. The seller then immediately apologised and refunded me. I then washed them and they came up good as new. Since the seller had cancelled the transaction and refunded me I couldn't do anything about it, leaving feedback or anything. I did offer to send them back now clean but she said to keep them. So technically, I paid nothing for these jeans. And then since that took a while to sort out, the weather heated up again so I haven't worn them yet. And I also feel really guilty that I didn't pay anything as I got my money refunded!

How I've Worn It:

I set myself the rule of wearing things twice in the month I buy them and even with being a little unwell for February I managed to meet that goal with the skirts. Maxi skirts just work so well into my life as a mum, the perfect length for church or the school run, and with the heat and humidity these light skirts have been a good choice. Was so easy to hit my wear twice goal with these skirts and I have so many more outfits in mind for them!

The jeans I didn't wear as it's just been too hot. They are sure to get more wear when Autumn weather finally arrives, now it's officially autumn we just have to wait for the summer heat to leave here in Brisbane! They are a very bold magenta so I'm excited to show them off once the weather cools down.

A few purchases even if I wasn't intending to buy anything this month! I'm pleased everything was preloved though, second hand shopping is a lot kinder to my wallet and the environment.

30 Ways To Wear: Chambray Maxi Skirt

A  new month, a new 30 ways to wear post! It's been a while since I featured a maxi skirt, and I am actually surprised that it's taken me so long to hit 30 wears with this chambray one!

Each month I go through my archives in the blog to find things I've worn 30 times or more to meet the 30 wear challenge, and compile all the times I've worn something into a helpful guide like this showing you how I've remixed things.

30 Ways To Wear: Chambray Maxi Skirt

30 ways to wear a chambray maxi skirt AwayFromTheBlue blog pinable image

The first 30 wears post I ever did was with a maxi skirt, but the last time I featured one was almost a year and a half ago, definitely overdue a ways to wear post with a maxi skirt for this series! This chambray maxi skirt is a stunner too! A sale purchase over 3 years ago, it's something I found through another blogger and fell in love with. I had to wait until it went on sale to get this, as I had to budget in the fact that I'd need to have it taken up, being petite. It's from the Noisy May range for tall people so there was quite a lot to cut off! 😂

Cost Per Wear

Cost per wear is a little tricky to calculate as I can't remember how much the alterations were! The skirt alone was just $24.49 and I've worn it 31 times since then, so it's under the $1 per wear that seems to be the goal most people aim for. If you add alterations as well though I would still have more wears to get that $1 a wear figure, but I know this skirt will be worn a lot more in future.

As someone who loves denim and maxi skirts, a chambray maxi skirt was an obvious choice and I really enjoy wearing this!

30 Ways To Wear Chambray Maxi Skirt: Video Style

Chambray Skirt With a Bright Top

4 ways to wear a chambray maxi skirt with bright tops | away from the blue

The beautiful blue chambray skirt is a perfect pairing with bold block-colour tops! I love a good bright coral or pink tee or tank, or a longer sleeved teal henley for cooler weather. This is such a fun skirt to wear other colours with as blue goes with most of my wardrobe!

Chambray Maxi Skirt With Yellow

3 outfit ideas with yellow and chambray maxi skirt | away from blue

Calling out this colour option for you separately from the brights section above, as I love wearing this chambray skirt with yellow! Blue and yellow is a favourite and cheerful colour combination I love to wear, and enjoy pairing different amounts of yellow with this blue skirt - a little bit like a yellow bag, or a larger amount of yellow like a mustard cardigan or tee.

Maxi Skirt In Monochrome Outfit

monochrome maxi skirt outfit ideas 3 ways to wear | awayfromtheblue

The colour combinations above are fun to try, but you can also go the easy route and wear a monochromatic outfit with a maxi skirt. this blue chambray skirt is a great pairing for a blue tank, tee or blouse, and as you can see I'm wearing it with 3 different shades of blue here. You don't have to match the shades of the skirt and top exactly to create a monochromatic outfit!

Maxi Skirt And Graphic Tee

how to wear graphic tees and chambray maxi skirt | awayfromblue

A graphic tee looks great with denim - and not just denim shorts and jeans! You can mix it up a little and pair a graphic tee with a chambray maxi skirt for a different look. This is such a nice combination for a hot day, and creates a slightly different outfit from the ones above where I've worn the skirt with bolder block-colour tees.

Chambray Skirt and Stripes

striped top and chambray maxi skirt 4 outfit ideas | away from the blue

Just like the graphic tee set of outfits above, stripes and denim is another classic go-to outfit for me. there's something so simple about denim and stripes! I like pairing striped tees and tanks with this skirt. As it's a plain block-colour skirt, you don't have to worry about print-clashing when you pick a striped top to wear with it.

Chambray Maxi Skirt and Layers

layering ideas with a chambray denim maxi skirt outfit different seasons | awayfromtheblue

Chambray isn't just a summer fabric for me, I like to get wear out of this maxi skirt year round. that means adding layers when it gets a little cooler. It could be as simple as adding a kimono over your maxi skirt, or extra layers on a winter day like a cardigan and scarf. A leather jacket works well with a maxi skirt in winter too, particularly paired with ankle boots to keep you cosy!

Maxi Skirt and Knit

3 ways to wear maxi skirt and knitted jumper pullover outfits | away from the blue

Another winter outfit idea is to wear a cosy knitted jumper with a maxi skirt! It's such a simple outfit to wear and so incredibly comfortable. I love being warm and cosy in winter so I've worn a jumper with this maxi skirt a few times. You may need to add some extra layers like scarves, ankle boots and leather jackets if it's very cold, or even a pair of leggings under your skirt!

Chambray Maxi Skirt and Summer Tanks

4 summer tank outfit ideas with chambray maxi skirt | away from blue

Saving the simplest outfit for last - for a hot summer day, just pick this light chambray maxi skirt and add a plain or colourful tank. Simple fuss-free summer dressing for the heat! The lighter fabric of this maxi skirt means it billows around nicely as you walk, creating a cool breeze on the hot days. A great summer outfit choice!

Weekday Wear Linkup! Wearing Dresses As Tops With Pencil Skirts

Scroll down for another Weekday Wear linkup, and to see how I've layered up two printed shift dresses for the office by throwing a pencil skirt over them. (Plus the first photos of my new shorter haircut are on the blog at last! I donated 38 cm of it recently!)

What I wore:

Why I wore it:

This navy printed shift dress was an impulse Zara buy when I was visiting Sydney a few years ago (before we got our own Zara in Brisbane!). This is not the first time I've worn it as a top, but it is the 30th time I've worn it. I'll need to do a 30 ways to wear post with it soon!

I wanted something professional enough to wear in the office but also easy enough to change up for a rare date night out with hubby to see a comedian at the powerhouse. I got him tickets as a Christmas present. It was super easy to make this outfit go from day to night just by taking off the pencil skirt, perfect for dinner and drinks after work before the show.

The magenta Balenciaga day bag was big enough to carry everything I needed and was a fun pop against the navy and black.

BagBalenciaga Day bag in 2005 magenta

Why I wore it:

Making the most of my outfit formulas and wearing a similar outfit again! I really like this shift dress but it's been neglected in my wardrobe as I felt it was a little too short for life with kids. It made me smile through the day when I had to keep pulling the skirt down as I was worried the dress was too long and peeking out the bottom! The dipped hem at the back helped with that. I will definitely need to start wearing this dress more. Last time I wore it was back in 2017!

The geometric print on this dress has tiny little pastel pink shapes, a very different shade from the bright magenta Balenciaga day bag, but I think they worked well together and I really liked this combination, just as much as I did the previous times I've worn it!

Last worn: geometric print shirt dress, blush and rose gold necklace, black pencil skirt, camel ballet flats, Balenciaga magenta day bag (above).

How You Can Wear It:

A too short dress can still be worn to the office if you cover it up with a pencil skirt. Using this trick can turn any dress into a top! This works particularly well for longer sleeved shirt dresses, as they just look like pretty blouses, and you instantly have a more formal office outfit just by adding the skirt.

What I Wore To Donate My Hair! Foil Tees and Maxi Skirts

In case you missed it, I donated my hair! You can see how far behind I am with blogging pics as I posted the video of the big chop at the end of March, and it's mid-April and Easter this weekend! I'll be posting short hair pics from Monday, until then come see what I wore to donate my hair (or take a peek at my Instagram to see the short hair!).

What I wore:

Why I wore it:

I wore this a few days before I donated my hair. I had the day off to sit that big exam I've mentioned a couple of times. My day was full of studying before logging on to do the test remotely in the afternoon. It was something I needed to be fully dressed for as obviously you are monitored when taking the exam. I had to give the person who was monitoring me for the exam a webcam tour of the entire room and the table I had my computer on, twisting and turning my laptop around. It would have been funnier if I wasn't so stressed about the exam, haha! Especially when I was told my flowers and candle were not allowed on the desk, nothing but my computer and mouse.

Luckily, I passed the exam and have a new work certification to my name! Since most of the day I was home by myself I felt brave enough to wear a white tee without worrying about getting it dirty, this foil one deserves a bit more love as it was a while since it was last worn.

I added the purple mini MAB tote bag for a touch of colour with the black and white and because I didn't need much to do the daycare pick up and drop off.

Why I wore it:

Since I liked the foil tee and maxi skirt combo above, despite the stressful day, I decided to wear a similar outfit again when I went to donate my hair. With some colourful accessories again, including a big statement necklace.

My bestie had grown her hair for two years and donated it, so I decided to do the same! And it's funny, it was about 2 years ago I shared that's what I was going to do!

You can see more in the video - including my reactions to the first cut - but we managed to donate 38cm of hair to Variety to be made into wigs for kids with cancer. Big thanks to Steph at Snippitz hairdresser at Marsden Park for doing the big cut and styling my very short locks afterwards! A special thank you to one of Steph's loyal customers who surprised me and paid for my haircut as their donation to the cause too.

You can find out more about donating your hair (or a monetary donation) on the Variety website.
