Wearing Tops Over Maxi Dresses With Ankle Boots: Casual and Dressy

Following a simple outfit formula and adding a top over a printed maxi dress to make it a skirt, but creating two very different looks!

What I wore:

Brisbane Fashion Runway show 2019 touch of glitter sqequin tank over snake print maxi dress with black blazer vintage Chanel | awayfromblue

snake print maxi dress with Chanel vintage quilted lambskin flap | awayfromtheblue

awayfromtheblue Instagram | black blazer with sequin tank over snake print maxi dress for brisbane fashion runway show
Earrings: Kmart mustard gold tassel earrings
JacketWarehouse cropped zip detail jacket
Tank: thrifted Valleygirl metallic sequin tank (gift from my mum)
DressJeanswest grey snake print maxi dress (worn as skirt)
ShoesAcne pistol boots in "skin"
BagChanel vintage quilted lambskin flap

Why I wore it:

Sequins and snake print together is not my normal style of dressing, but I pushed myself out of my comfort zone a little with this outfit for the Brisbane Fashion Runway show. The theme was a touch of glitter and I think this tank nailed it perfectly!

I knew I wanted to wear this snake print maxi dress but couldn't find a sequin topper, so thrifted a few possible necklace options at the opshops after spending a few weeks fruitlessly hunting for something with sequins. None of the necklaces felt quiet right with the dress but luckily my mum found this sequin tank for just $2 in her local opshop and it was exactly what I needed! Big thanks to my mum!

Apart from the $2 tank, everything else was already in my wardrobe. The cropped black blazer is one I won in a blog giveaway years ago and considered donating it a few times. Glad I kept it as it was a much cooler day than expected with the rain all morning. Thankfully it cleared up in the afternoon for the show.

Had a really fun time despite worrying I'd feel out of place, never been to an official fashion show before but Emily and Mel were great people to go with. Big thanks to Emily for the photos too!

Last worn: cropped blazer, gold tassel earrings, snake print maxi dress, Acne pistol boots, vintage Chanel bag. First time I've worn the thrifted tank my mum found me.

Other ways to wearcropped blazer and lace dress, snake print maxi dress with red clutch, Acne pistol boots and ruffle dress, vintage Chanel bag at Christmas.

Perfect for pregnancysnake print maxi dress at 39 weeks, Acne pistol boots in third trimester, vintage Chanel bag and last pregnancy pic.

Tee: Spectrum basic v-neck tee in grey marl
DressJeanswest Sophia high-low maxi dress
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
Bag: Amerii medium sling rattan bag in black (c/o)

Why I wore it:

This was the morning after the night before! 😂 Needed something simple and comfortable after a few drinks before, during and after the fashion show! Mum life means 3 drinks in one night and staying up past my normal bed time is far too much, ha! Stuck with the same outfit formula but a lot more casual.  I love wearing this high-low maxi dress as a skirt and the grey tee was the perfect topper with it.

The black straw bag and ankle boots were simple matching accessories that made getting ready in the morning a bit easier! We made it to church but did spend the rest of the day afterwards at home, trying to relax as much as you can with two little boys!

Last worn: grey tee, pearl tassel necklace, printed maxi dress, black ankle boots, straw circle bag.

Other ways to weargrey tee and pencil skirt, printed maxi dress and denim jacket, black ankle boots worn 30 ways, straw circle bag in winter.

Perfect for pregnancygrey tee in second trimester, black ankle boots in second trimester.

Ruffle Dresses for the Office with Chloe Paddington Bag

If I like something I'll buy multiples of it. While I'm a bit more discerning now and I wait until something has proved its worth in my wardrobe before I buy another version of it, there are a handful of pieces in my wardrobe that I bought different prints of at the same time, like these dresses!

These ruffle dresses were purchased at the same time and both are must-haves in my wardrobe. While they are identical styles, just different prints, I find them both useful additions to my wardrobe. Neither of them are breastfeeding friendly so they have been packed away while I was on maternity leave. They are perfect for the office though and it's been good to get them out again. I decided to wear them with a little worn bag, my Chloe Paddington.

What I wore:

blush pink blazer, ankle boots, animal print ruffle dress and Chloe paddington brun chocolate brown bag | Away From Blue

Why I wore it:

The style challenge for the day was 'spot my shoe style' so I decided to wear my favourite boots, my Acne Pistol ankle boots. Last time I wore these to the office I really enjoyed wearing them again. While they have a high heel they are so comfortable, and I had no issues wearing them last time on a quiet day in the office. This time round I ended up unexpectedly rushing around the office to and from meetings in these and by the end of the day I was wishing I'd picked flat shoes! My feet were comfortable, but my weak knee, used to wearing flats during pregnancy and on maternity leave, was a little sore as they are quite tall.

Knee problems aside, I loved everything else about this outfit. The pastel pink blazer works perfectly with the print on the dress, and it was fun carrying my Chloe paddington again. It was my first ever designer bag purchase, over 10 years ago!

Last worn: blush pink blazer, ruffle printed dress, Acne Pistol Boots, Chloe Paddington bag.

Other ways to wearblush pink blazer and olive tank, ruffle printed dress and red accessories, Acne Pistol Boots and bodycon dress, Chloe Paddington bag with graphic tee and jeans.

Perfect for pregnancy: blush blazer and maternity pencil skirt in third trimester, printed dress hiding 4 month baby bump, pistol boots in third trimesterChloe Paddington in first trimester.

Why I wore it:

The colour of this dress is always so hard to capture! It's a really berry pink, looking hot pink and red in different lights. I thought the fun yellow statement necklace would look great with it, and the embellished blazer kind of has stripes on it for the 'team stripes' style challenge that day.

Surprised to look up and see that the last time I wore this dress was over 2 years ago though! No idea why it's been so long between wears.

I was wearing my trusty gold mouse flats instead of heels, which was definitely needed. As I shared on my Insta stories, daycare lost a lovey/comforter/snuggly whatever you want to call it. As we didn't have a backup, I had to rush around the city stores at lunch time trying desperately to find a replacement. Without any luck sadly! I was more than a little annoyed, especially as it's not the first time I've made this frantic shop!

Thankfully I liked my outfit, even if I did go home empty handed with no replacement cuddly toy. Daycare eventually found it again a couple days later. And we also now have a back up one!

Last worn: jacquard blazer, ruffle detail dress, gold mouse flats, Chloe Paddington bag (above).

Where To Buy a Chloe Paddington Bag:

While the Chloe Paddington is no longer in production, there are plenty of trusted places to get it second hand!

How You Can Wear It:

Need a quick and easy outfit for work? Grab a pretty dress and add a blazer and your fave bag, simple and professional!
If you're buying multiples of clothes for work, dresses are a good option. Different prints and colours make it look like a whole new outfit, even if they are the same style of dress, like the two in this post.

Office Outfits: Blue Printed Dresses, Purple Balenciaga Work Bag and Starfish Project Necklaces

I've been back at work for 2 months now and I still have unworn office pieces in my wardrobe! Working part time I definitely have less need for strictly office clothing in my wardrobe. I was so excited to unbox my office pieces from storage near the end of my maternity leave, but now I'm wondering if I really need all of them.

I had a mini wardrobe declutter recently where I went through the still unworn office pieces and pulled a few out to donate or sell on ebay, but these dresses will definitely be staying in my wardrobe. Blue is my favourite colour, so there's always room in my wardrobe for a blue dress or two. Blue looks so good with purple too.

What I wore:

Why I wore it:

If I had to pick just one favourite office dress, this would be it! Can't believe it's been a year and a half since it was last worn, but it's not breastfeeding friendly so was packed away while I was on maternity leave. I love the navy colour and the print. I usually wear a belt with this, but I'd decided to wear a long necklace so took the belt off. I changed my mind at the last minute and picked this yellow Starfish Project necklace instead. It met the style challenge prompt of 'V' as it's the 'Veronica' necklace! I do think this dress looks much better with a belt though!

I love blue and yellow together, and blue and purple, but I wasn't sure about the purple bag and yellow necklace together. I figured that they were far enough apart in my outfit that it didn't matter and I could wear it anyway. Still not sure I'd wear the two colours together again, but it doesn't look too bad here.

Last worn: navy macintosh, Aztec print dress, Marc by Marc jacobs tan flats, Balenciaga purple work bag.

Other ways to wearnavy macintosh and monochrome outfit, Aztec print dress and tights, tan flats and skinny jeans, Balenciaga purple work bag and pencil skirt.

Perfect for pregnancy: Aztec print dress in third trimester, tan flats in third trimester.

Why I wore it:

Another take on the same outfit formula, with a blue paisley print dress this time and a long turquoise Starfish Project necklace. Just like in the outfit above, I was happy to wear a statement beaded necklace with the printed dress. You can wear statement necklaces with more than just plain basics.

It was a little cooler when I wore this too so I got another old favourite out of my wardrobe, these Acne Pistol boots. I wasn't sure I could handle the whole day in heels, even though these are very comfortable they are quite high. I was pleased my weak knee held up well despite not having worn tall heels in a very long time. Over 2 years!

Just like the paisley print dress, these ankle boots haven't been worn in such a long time as they aren't ideal stay at home mum style. While I probably could run in them if I had to, I prefer to chase toddlers in flats, ha! Wearing Pistol boots and dresses is a spring outfit favourite of mine, so I'm sure you will see these pop up more now as I wear them to work. I'm thankful for a business casual dress code that lets me wear ankle boots!

Last worn: camel trench, paisley print dress, Acne pistol boots, Balenciaga purple work bag (above).

Other ways to wear: camel trench and fit and flare dress,  blue printed dress and pink accessories, Acne pistol boots and printed shorts, Balenciaga purple work bag and pink skirt.

Starfish Project Beaded Necklaces:

How You Can Wear It:

Printed dresses make getting ready for work in the mornings easy as they are instant outfits. You can still add accessories though, colourful statement necklaces work just as well with printed pieces as they do with plain basics. These Starfish Project necklaces support a very good cause too!

June Dress Week: Printed Maxi Dress Day and Night with Ankle Boots

Two different outfits with the same printed maxi dress! Showing you what I've recently worn for the June Dress Week style challenge, and what I wore for a house cooling party on the weekend.

I'm doing the #JuneDressWeek2 challenge with my blog buddy Kiki from According to Kiki. You can follow along with us on instagram: @kikimincks and @awayfromblue, or through our blogs.

What I wore:

Printed Maxi Dress in Winter layered with blue knit pink skull scarf ankle boots

Rebecca Minkoff aquamarine mini MAC with teal printed maxi dress
Jumper: thrifted blue Mossman knit jumper (new purchase)
Dress: Thrifted JayJays teal paisley print maxi dress
ShoesAcne pistol boots in "skin" (on sale!)
BagRebecca Minkoff mini MAC with python embossed leather in aquamarine (on sale here!)

Why I wore it:

The style challenge for the day was 'take me away'. You can see how Kiki interpreted the theme here. I went with a maxi dress as it's the perfect piece for a holiday, take me away to the sun! Unfortunately it's cold, rainy and winter in Brisbane so I layered up a little with a cosy knit and a scarf. Comfortable for working from home and doing the day care drop off/pickup too.

As it's the second time I've worn this maxi dress since I bought it, my purchase review:
I'm so glad I bought this. I mentioned when I bought it and when I last wore it that I used to have something really similar when I was younger, in black. Every time I look at this dress I become more and more convinced I have owned it before, just in black and in a smaller size. I haven't had any luck finding an old photo of it though!
I love this dress. It's hard to say if it's because this dress is a great piece on its own or if it reminds me of the black one I outgrew years ago, but I love it either way. I wasn't really looking to add another maxi dress to my collection but I am so glad I did pick this one up, I can see it getting lots of wear in the warmer months especially. It's not a colour I'd normally go for, but since my wardrobe detox and getting 'my colour palette' done I've been branching out a little more with colour and this dress is perfect. So happy with this purchase.

Last worn: pink skull scarfteal maxi dress, Acne pistol boots, Rebecca Minkoff aqua mini MAC.

Other ways to wear: skull scarf in spring with chambray dresscolourful maxi dress with a bright pashmina, pistol boots and printed shorts, aquamarine mini MAC bag with skinny jeans.

What I wore:

Teal printed maxi dress black cardi vintage Chanel flap ankle boots layered necklaces

Chanel vintage quilted lambskin flap bag
Necklaces: silver spiral necklace layered with Tai gold alphabet necklace and Dogeared silver wishbone necklace (on sale!)
Cardi: no label black long cardi
Dress: Thrifted JayJays teal paisley print maxi dress
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagChanel vintage quilted lambskin flap

Why I wore it:

I wasn't sure what to wear for a 'house cooling' party on the weekend. I didn't want to be too cold but I didn't want to dress too casually in jeans. I have been wearing maxi dresses a lot lately, and not just because I'm doing dress week style challenges. They are the perfect option for 'there is no dress code' events. They work for kid's birthday parties as well as grown up house parties.

It gave me another excuse to wear this printed maxi dress too, and although I wore it a few days after the outfit I posted above, I thought it would be a nice side-by-side post to show a day and evening look with the same dress. I did wish I'd worn a scarf or a thicker jacket with this - it was quite chilly in the evening, although we were warm enough once we got inside. Since I had the cardigan on I layered up some necklaces instead of bracelets, to add some accessories.

Leaving My Wardrobe: Black Cardigan

This cardigan has never been seen on the blog, that I could find. It's a piece I used to have in my desk at work for when the air conditioning got cold. Unlike my other cardigans, I don't enjoy wearing this one. It's not the best quality and it isn't the most comfortable to wear. I do have another black cardigan I haven't worn in years, despite enjoying wearing it, so there is no point keeping this one I don't like wearing. It is leaving my wardrobe.

Last worn: teal printed maxi dress (above), vintage Chanel flap bag. First time I've worn the boots as they are a new purchase, and first time I've worn the cardigan on the blog.

Other ways to wear: colourful maxi dress with a bright pashmina, vintage Chanel bag with another printed maxi dress at 39 weeks pregnant

Corporate Style: Prints, Pink and Blazers

With a quiet few days at work without a lot of meetings, I took the chance to try some new things to meet the challenges for the Fox in Flats style dares on instagram. I ended up with two outfits I was really happy with!

What I wore:

Marsala skinny pants for office with pink strawberry print shirt blazer heels

Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere
Jacket: Zara cream jersey blazer
NecklaceTai gold alphabet necklace
ShirtChoies pink chiffon shirt with strawberry print (C/O Choies)
PantsJeanswest 'Fiona' skinny leg pant in shiraz
Shoes: Wittner 'Mimi' heels in mushroom
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

I've always admired pink and burgundy on other people, I've seen it done really well, so wanted to give it a try myself! Of course we call it Marsala this year ;)

I've worn burgundy to work before (burgundy scarf, maroon dress) but when I saw this challenge I had a hard time trying to think of anything Marsala-toned that I could wear to work. I kept thinking of these pants. I've always thought of these pants more as skinny jeans. They aren't denim, but they are quite a slim fit. I think with the heels and the button up shirt and blazer they dressed up nicely for the office. I've had them 3 years and never once worn them to the office, not even for casual Friday.

This is my favourite outfit from the Fox in Flats style dares this time around - because I'd never thought of wearing these pants to the office before. Now I've tried it and loved it, I have a new way to wear them! It's good to find new ways to wear things in my wardrobe.

Last worn: cream blazer, strawberry print shirt, burgundy pants, Wittner heels, LV speedy bandouliere.

Other ways to wear: jersey blazer with a vintage skirt suitcasual summer shorts outfit with printed shirt, casual burgundy pants and iombre knit outfit, brown heels with flares, LV speedy with a chambray dress.

What I wore:

Blush Pink Blazer Print mixing stargazer scarf paisley print dress acne pistol boots

Rebecca Minkoff medium MAB tote in moon (navy blue) handbag

JacketJeanswest Nadine 3/4 Sleeve dusky pink blazer
ScarfMarc by Marc Jacobs Stargazer scarf in aquamarine (on sale!)
NecklaceHouse of Harlow Dynamic necklace in gold
DressFrench Connection blue Paisley print dress
BeltAsos skinny boyfriend belt (tied in a double loop knot using this tutorial)
ShoesAcne pistol boots in "skin"
Bracelets: the usual plus JORD black Fieldcrest wood watch (C/O)
BagRebecca Minkoff medium MAB tote in moon navy

Why I wore it:

the style challenge for the day was 'all tied up' so I took the chance to wear this blazer belted, as I've been wanting to do that for a while. I've worn this belt with the dress before, in summer, I really like the combination. I think that it looks better without the scarf for working in an office, but I wanted something to keep me cosy on the commute so I thought this scarf would be a nice mix of prints. After reviewing the photos I wasn't too sure about it, so I put the scarf away in my bag when I got to work.

This outfit is one I had in mind for wearing this dress after I was a little on the fence about it last time I wore it. I really liked the combination of the dress and blazer together, and so I'm going to keep the dress in my wardrobe still. Minus the scarf I felt comfortable and confident in this all day.

Last worn: blush pink blazer, MbMJ Stargazer scarf, tan belt, paisley print dress, Acne Pistol boots, Rebecca Minkoff navy MAB tote.

Other ways to wear: galaxy print scarf with stripes and purplepastel blazer with denim shorts, scarf, paisley print dress in summer with blue and silver accessories, pistol boots with denim shorts, MAB tote with office outfits.

Bare Legs in Autumn - Colours, Prints and Neutral Bags

After the crazy stormy weather, it actually turned into a nice couple of days, warm enough to go bare-legged even though it's nearing the end of autumn. I took the chance to wear some lighter outfits, guided again by what the theme of the day was for each day for the Fox in Flats May style challenge.

What I wore:

Monochrome blue outfit printed shirts plain tank white drape jacket pistol boots

Avalina Leather Audrey clutch in cognac tassels
Jacket: no label white drape jacket
NecklaceHouse of Harlow sunburst necklace in silver and grey
Tank:  Jeanswest 'Jenni' singlet in indigo blue (on sale here!)
ShortsJeanswest 'Scarlette' printed shorts (on sale!)
ShoesAcne pistol boots in "skin"
BagAudrey leather clutch in cognac C/O Avalina Leather

Why I wore it:

I had been looking at these shorts in my wardrobe recently, thinking it was a shame I didn't wear them as much as I had hoped to over summer. So when the challenge for the day was 'slick legs - leather, pleather, coated denim or dare to bare' I knew wearing these shorts again would be perfect. It worked out well as I was able to take advantage of the warm weather and go bare-legged, without needing to layer too much on top. I only needed the jacket in the morning and evening.

I chose the blue tank to wear with the shorts as it was an outfit idea the personal stylist suggested to me during my wardrobe detox - I quite liked the monochrome look, but I think a tank that matched the shorts a little closer would have been better. This was the closet match I had from my blue tanks though.

This bag hasn't been worn in a while! I wasn't sure what bag would look best with this, and I've been wearing my Rebecca Minkoff bags a lot lately so wanted to change it up a little. I just needed my wallet and phone as I was working from home and only popping out to day care with baby. I went looking for a nice bag and rediscovered this cute tan clutch, perfect and fit exactly what I needed.

Last worn: waterfall drape jacket, blue tank, printed shorts, Acne Pistol boots, Avalina leather clutch.

Other ways to wear: draped jacket with stripes, blue tank over a third trimester baby bumpprinted shorts outfit for a day at a theme parkpistol boots with a little red dresstan leather clutch with an Aztec print dress.

What I wore:

Casual SAHM Autumn Dress Outfit red shift dress converse chucks leopard print scarf

Rebecca Minkoff soft grey mini MAB MAM satchel with leopard print scarf
ScarfAsos crinkle oversized leopard print scarf
DressZalora Basics faux leather placket red shift dress (new purchaseon sale!)
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in white
BagRebecca Minkoff MAB mini in soft grey

Why I wore it:

I loved this outfit, but it was a struggle to come up with it, despite how simple it looks! The challenge for the day was 'vamp vixen', and I wouldn't say I'd have anything especially vampish in my wardrobe. It was also a quiet day with baby - a few errands to run but nothing that would need me to put a lot of effort into my outfit.

Had been wanting to wear this red dress again for its second wear of the month, and thought a scarf would look good. Red and leopard print sounds kind of vampish right? Even if I was balancing it out with a loose fit red dress, just a little bit of leopard in the scarf and extremely practical flat shoes. While I'm not entirely sure it met the challenge for the day, I really loved this outfit. This scarf is another one I rediscovered during my wardrobe detox, it hasn't been worn in almost 3 years! far too long between wears.

This is the second time I've worn this dress since I bought it (you can see the previous time here). I'm trying to wear everything I buy twice in a month after I buy it so I can see if it really works in my wardrobe, to make myself think more about what I'm buying and to try and stop buying things I just don't wear.

My purchase review:
I wasn't 100% sold on this dress when I saw it online but bought it because the price was good and it was a similar style to the dress I had been wanting to buy for a while. I am so glad I made this impulse purchase, it's a great dress! The colour is a little different from what I would usually go for, but so wearable. The length is good for being at home with baby too - just above the knees and it doesn't creep up too far when belt the ergo carrier around my waist while babywearing. Plus, it has pockets! The sleeves hit me at an odd point - probably as I'm petite - so I've just rolled the sleeves up a little more, but they stay there all day and that's easy enough to do each time I wear it.

This is one of those impulse purchases I'm glad I made - I knew that since I ordered from the Iconic I could return it if it didn't work out anyway. Even if I am trying to curb my impulse buys, this one was a worthwhile one!

Last worn: leopard print scarf, red dress, white Converse, RM MAM bag.

Other ways to wear: leopard print scarf with Aztec print dress, red shift dress with blue scarf and ankle boots, polka dot shirt dress and Converse, print mixing outfit with a neutral grey bag.
