30 Ways To Wear: Mustard Cardigan

Although it's been quite a warm spring so far here in Brisbane, I finally hit 30 wears with this yellow cardigan over winter and I've been looking forward to sharing a wrap up post of all the ways I've worn it. Even if I have packed my knits away already waiting for cooler autumn weather next year!

30 Ways To Wear: Mustard Yellow Cardigan

30 ways to wear a mustard yellow long cardigan awayfromblue 30wears challenge

Mustard is definitely my favourite shade of yellow! It's so versatile, and this cardigan is a nice cosy way to add more colour to a layered outfit on a cold day. I'm surprised it's taken me so long to hit 30 wears with it actually, I feel I wear it a lot!

Cost Per Wear

I have very good cost per wear with this cardigan. I've worn it 30 times and it was an opshop buy back in 2017. I paid just $2 for it. Such a good bargain find, although sadly that opshop has sold down as the charity sold off the building. It's down to just 6 cents a wear so far.

However, even better than the 6 cents cost per wear is the fact that this cardigan is from SES Fashion, an Australian fast fashion chain. Not only was it worn by whoever donated it to the opshop, but I've worn and loved it 30 times and I'm sure to wear it many more times! it's decreasing the environmental impact the more times I wear and enjoy it, instead of buying new. You can make your wardrobe more sustainable even if you have cheap fast fashion brands, simply by buying less and rewearing more often.

In saying that, it is just a cheap fast fashion knit. It's a lot baggier than it was when I first bought it preloved 5 years ago, and some of the stitching on the cuff and a shoulder is starting to come undone. It certainly doesn't look new, but it's still got plenty life left in it, even if I might have to patch up some of the stitching at some point in future. Here are the 30 ways I've worn it so far:

Mustard Yellow Cardigan With Blue

30 ways to wear a mustard cardigan with blue in your outfit | awayfromblue

Blue and yellow is a colour combination I love - and any shade of blue works well with this mustard knit! Such a bright cheerful yellow, and something in my favourite colour (blue!) is a sure way to make me love an outfit.

Yellow Cardigan Worn With Neutrals

adding colour to 4 different monochrome outfits with mustard yellow cardigan | awayfromtheblue

If you're not sure how to wear a bright block colour cardigan like this, try neutrals! Black, white and grey are a failsafe outfit base for a bright knit like this.

Mustard Cardigan And Orange Outfits

3 fun outift ideas with orange and yellow mustard cardigan awayfromblue

This is a particularly bold combination! While I don't like all the orange and yellow outfits I've created with this cardigan, I do love those second too, with the orange in the print of the tank and dress. Something I want to wear more of, the citrus brights are great together.

Yellow Cardigan Worn With Grey

4 grey and yellow outfit ideas with mustard cardigan awayfromblue

Grey is easily my favourite neutral to wear with yellow. Mustard and grey are so good together, as you can see I've worn these grey skinny jeans with this cardigan a lot!

Wearing Green With Mustard Yellow Cardigan

5 green and yellow outfit ideas with mustard cardigan | awayfromblue

Green is something I've eased into wearing with this cardigan. I like the bright green jeans with it on a day I want to be especially bold, but for a less in-your-face outfit, you can try it with olive green, that works equally well.

Print Mixing With Block Colour Yellow Cardigan

4 print mixing outfits with a yellow cardigan | awayfromtheblue

Winter means scarves and knits, and with this being a solid block colour piece it lets me try a little print mixing with the rest of my outfits, from a striped tee or dress, even those chevron print jeans. I've worn the pink and yellow skull scarf with this cardigan a few times as I like the matchy-matchy of the yellow.

Dresses With Mustard Cardigan

3 outfit ideas for dresses with a mustard yellow cardigan | awayfromtheblue

It's not just jeans I wear my cardigans with! A long cardigan like this is a nice topper over a printed dress - and perfect with tights or leggings in winter to make your outfit warmer. Although I've only won it the once as you can see in that first outfit, a cardigan looks great belted over a dress.

Shorts and Cardigan Outfits

3 ways to wear a mustard yellow cardigan with shorts and tee | awayfromblue

When the weather is right it's good to bare some skin, and a cardigan over a shorts and tee outfit is ideal as you can easily take the cardigan off and stick it in your bag if the day warms up more than expected!

30 Ways to Wear: Navy Waterfall Cardigan From Jeanswest

Not surprised I've hit over 30 wears with this navy waterfall cardigan over this winter - it's a staple in my winter outfits and the neutral colour goes with everything! It's good timing with spring here in Brisbane to share 30 wears I've won this knit.

30 Ways To Wear: Navy Waterfall Cardigan

30 ways to wear Jeanswest waterfall drape cardigan in navy night sky marle outfit ideas awayfromblue

This navy cardigan goes with everything! I bought this to try and add more knits to my winter wardrobe, and the neutral block navy colour ensures I can wear it with any of my outfits, as I've shared below with just some of the ways I've worn it. It's the perfect piece for not looking too casual or underdressed with the gentle waterfall shape, and works well belted or worn loose. Something I'm glad I picked up on sale 4 years ago! It's just the right thickness for cool winter and spring days in Brisbane.

Cost Per Wear

I purchased this cardigan back in May 2018 for $41.99, using a gift card. So it didn't cost me anything  as it was a gift card purchase, but it works out to $1.31 a wear of gift card money for the 32 times I've worn it. Pretty good for something that is still going to be a staple in my wardrobe for the years to come! When I bought it I was excited I could use the buttons to turn the cardigan into a wrap top, but I've only worn it that way once so far, so I really need to try change it up when I'm wearing it and take advantage of the button up feature!

Below are 30 of my favourite outfits with this cardigan, to give you some ideas and inspiration for how you can wear a similar piece in your wardrobe.

Waterfall Cardigan and Dresses Outfits

ways to wear a waterfall cardigan with dresses | awayfromtheblue

This long waterfall cardigan is the perfect layer over a dress! I really like it worn belted over a dress for the office, but it looks nice just worn loose and draping down too.

Navy Cardigan With Green

4 green and navy outfit ideas with jeans and waterfall cardigans | awayfromblue

Green and blue is a combination I've really warmed to in recent years - and as you can see from the brighter jeans, olive jeans and even the green printed scarf, a navy cardigan like this is so good against shades of green.

Waterfall Cardigan and Pencil Skirt Office Outfit

navy waterfall cardigan and pencil skirt outfits for office | awayfromblue

Another staple office outfit in the cooler weather is throwing this navy cardigan on over a pencil skirt outfit. It's great for the cooler morning and afternoon office commutes, and stylish enough that it doesn't look out of place in my business casual office.

Navy Cardigan Worn With Red

three red and blue outfit ideas with navy waterfall cardigan | awayfromblue

Red and blue is a colour combination I really like to wear! As with the green outfits above, I find any shade of red works well with this navy cardigan. Red or burgundy jeans, even a red poppy print scarf, really pop with the navy knit.

Waterfall Cardigan With Shorts

3 ways to wear shorts with navy waterfall cardigan | awayfromtheblue

There are some spring and autumn days where it's just not warm enough for bare arms and bare legs - so a cardigan over a shorts and tee outfit is a good option. It also packs up easily into your bag if the day warms up later too and you need to remove a layer.

Navy Cardigan Worn With Purple

4 purple and blue outfit ideas with navy knit waterfall cardigan | awayfromtheblue

I really like deep purple shades with this navy cardigan - like the purple jeans and the purple scarf. Even that little plum bag. The magenta bags look great with it too, but I think navy and purple look really good together so wanted to call that out in these sets of outfits.

Waterfall Cardigan Worn With Printed Pieces In An Outfit

4 ways to wear printed pieces with navy waterfall cardigan | awayfromblue

The reason I added this to my wardrobe was that I wanted a nice block colour cardigan I could easily wear with printed pieces - stripes, skulls, leopard print, any print works when you have a plain block colour cardigan on top. Especially if it's a neutral navy like this.

Pink and Navy Outfit Ideas With Waterfall Cardigan

5 different outfit ideas with pink and navy waterfall cardigan | awayfromtheblue

Yet another go-to colour combination for me is pink and purple. Magenta jeans, as I called out above, magenta looks great with this navy! Or lighter pink tees or printed jeans, all shades of pink are nice against this dark blue knit.

30 Ways To Wear: Grey Maxi Cardigan

I'm sharing another outerwear piece for this months 30 ways to wear post! Last month I showed you 30 ways to wear a camel trench coat, this month it's this lovely grey longline maxi cardigan (also known as a duster) from Jeanswest, in the cosiest Australian wool.

Every month I share something I've worn more than 30 times to give you some ideas and inspiration for how you can wear a similar piece in your wardrobe. Inspired by the 30 wears challenge I first heard about in The True Cost documentary.

30 Ways To Wear: Grey Maxi Cardigan

30 Ways To Wear: Grey Wool Maxi Cardigan Awayfromtheblue blog

It does feel a little strange sharing this cardigan right now, in the middle of spring when it's been packed away for a few weeks! It's a very thick and cosy Australian wool cardigan, perfect for a Brisbane winter, but not something that's been needed much in the hot spring we've had so far. I was so happy to realise I'd hit 30 wears with it though this year (35 to be exact) so I was eager to share it.

Cost Per Wear

I picked up this 'Alice' wool cardigan in the Jeanswest autumn sale back in 2017, so I've had it 2 and a half years. I paid $88.15 for it, and with 35 wears so far that works out to $2.50 a wear. Still more wears to go to reach the "$1 per wear" figure most people aim for, but I'm impressed that I've worn it so much so far. 35 wears over 3 winters is about 12 wears a year, and given that our winter weather barely lasts three months in Brisbane that's a great number! It's something I like reaching for over and over when it's chilly.

It is definitely showing its age, there's a lot of pilling on it as it's been worn and washed. I've run a fuzzball remover over it a few times but it's quite a thick wool so I'm not sure you see much of a difference, ha! It's still so cosy and comfortable though so I will continue to wear it, nothing wrong with pieces looking a little lived in! It's expected for wool to have pilling over time I think anyway.

Grey Maxi Cardigan And Bright Jeans

grey maxi cardigan and bright colourful denim skinny jeans | away from the blue

A nice neutral, long cardigan like this is wonderful to wear with different coloured denim! I love wearing my red, green and purple skinny jeans with this cardigan, it's a fun and colourful way to stay cosy through winter. This longline cardigan looks great with skinny jeans in any shade.

Grey Cardigan and Printed Jeans

ways to wear grey maxi cardigan and printed jeans 4 outfit ideas | awayfromblue

Of course it's not just colourful jeans I'll wear with grey maxi cardigan with, I have a couple of pairs of printed jeans too and this cardigan works equally well with printed denim. Pairing this cardigan with the Sass & Bide chevron printed jeans is a frequent go-to, as you can see! If you're a fan of leggings, you could try printed leggings instead.

Maxi Cardigan And Scarves

wool duster cardigan with blanket scarves ways to wear | awayfromtheblue

This wool cardigan is so cosy in winter, but sometimes you need a little extra layer to keep you warm, especially on a windy day. A big blanket scarf comes in helpful, and with the cardigan being a neutral plain block colour you can pick any printed scarf to wear with it. Leopard is a favourite of mine!

Longline Cardigan With Jeans and Boots

5 ways to wear longline duster maxi cardigan with jeans and boots | away from the blue blog

Sometimes a scarf, wool cardigan and jeans just isn't enough on a cold day, so you have to pull out the boots as well! The longline of this cardigan looks so great when paired with tall boots, although as you can see in the last photo there ankle boots work just as well.

Grey Cardigan With Grey Jeans

Going monochromatic and pairing a grey cardigan with a grey pair of jeans lets you have more fun with the res of your outfit - either picking bright and colourful accessories like scarves or shoes or bags, or a brightly coloured tee to break up all the grey. I like matching things together, and a grey cardigan and jeans are a great combination.

Maxi Cardigan With Skirts And Dresses

I do wear this grey maxi cardigan a lot with jeans, but I've worn it with dresses and skirts too! These three outfits show you how you can wear a maxi cardigan with a maxi dress, pencil skirt, or maxi skirt. It's a nice cosy warm layer to add on top of a skirt or dress.

Grey Cardigan With Simple Tops and Jeans

Of course, the simplest outfits are the best! A neutral grey maxi cardigan like this is the perfect throw on and go layer on top of a simple jeans and tee (or jeans and tank!) outfit when it's a little too chilly for bare arms. It's fuss free as it really does go with everything, as you've seen from these 30 different ways to wear it.

30 Ways To Wear A Purple Cardigan: #30wears Outfit Challenge

This 30 wears post has been a while coming, after I hit 30 wears on this cardigan in spring last year. It just didn't feel right to post about it over summer though. Now the weather is cooler and it's officially winter here in Brisbane, I'm happy to share some of the 30 ways I've worn this cardigan in the past. I even managed to find some of the ways I'd worn it before I had the blog so I could share that with you for something different.

30 Ways To Wear: Purple Cardigan

30 ways to wear a purple cardigan | Away From The Blue Blog pinnable pic

The past few times I've done a 30 wears post I've managed to calculate the cost per wear. Unfortunately, I bought this cardigan so long ago, I can't remember what I paid for it. I've only photographed my outfits consistently every day since I started this blog in 2012 so I'm not sure exactly how many times I've worn this. There have been over 33 times I've photographed it and I'm pleased with that. The earliest pic I could find was winter 2011, so it's at least 7 years old and still going strong.

How To Wear a Purple Cardigan Video:

Belting A Cardigan

3 ways to wear a cardigan belted | away from the blue

One of my early blog pics there in the middle! It's fun seeing how things have changed. I used to have to balance my camera on the BBQ and use the self timer, so often it wasn't aligned properly. I much prefer the other pics, taken with my camera remote and tripod.
No matter what the photos look like, I love each of these outfit ideas though. I really like the way this cardigan looks belted. It's something a bit different, and good in the middle of winter as it keeps you warm as the cardigan stays closed in place. It makes the draped pieces sit really flatteringly too and almost creates a peplum effect as you can see in the last photo.

Colourful Cardigan and Matching Bag

3 outift ideas purple cardigan and matching magenta Balenciaga day bag

Each season, Balenciaga come out with new colours for their bags. I always take a liking to the pinks, but the 2005 magenta is my favourite pink. As you can see in the photos above, my current magenta Balenciaga Day bag isn't the only magenta bag I've had, the old selfie in the middle is back when I had the same colour in the city style too.

With the touch of pink in this purple cardigan, and the touch of purple in the pink bag, the cardigan and bags are a nice combination. They aren't a perfect match, but the shade is close enough together that I like the almost matchy-matchyness.

Purple Cardigan With Blue Tops

4 outfit ideas of a purple cardigan with blue tops and jeans | awayfromtheblue

It's not just similar colours I like wearing this purple cardigan with. Blue and purple is a combination I frequently wear, so I really like navy tops with this cardigan.
Of course that last outfit there is my favourite, it was Baby T's first outing after we got home from the hospital. Even though I'm exhausted, my postpartum tum is on display, and we were going to a clinic for breastfeeding help, it was still a comfortable outfit and my favourite photo of the post!

Purple Cardigan With Pink

3 ways to wear a purple cardigan with pink | away from blue blog

Another frequently worn colour combination of mine is pink and purple. With the bright purple colour of this cardigan, it's easy to introduce just a little touch of colour through a small bag like this neon pink mini MAC I'm wearing in the last two photos. If you're feeling bolder or particularly colourful, you could wear it with a pink top too, like I've done with the ombre tank in the first outfit.

Purple Cardigan With Purple Accessories

4 outfit ideas to wear purple cardigan with purple bag | away from the blue

You'll know from reading my blog (or looking at some of the outfits I've already shared!) that I like my colourful handbags. They are fun accessories with an outfit. And while the deep plum purple of these Rebecca Minkoff bags in the outfits above doesn't match the pinky-purple shade of the cardigan, I think they compliment each other quite nicely!
Even if your accessories aren't a perfect match to a colourful cardigan, it's good to give the combination a try - as you can see I loved the little purple MAB tote bag with this cardigan so much I've worn it quite a few times!

Colourful Cardigan With Neutral Outfits

3 ways to add a purple cardigan to neutral outfits | awayfromtheblue

If you're completely stumped about what to wear with a colourful cardigan, throw it on over a neutral outfit. It can be something as simple as a grey tee like in the first picture, or a monochrome black outfit like the last photo. It also works well with cream and neutrals as you can see in the middle there. I'm also employing my previous tip above of wearing a purple bag with the cardigan in these last two photos, but you could easily stick with a neutral brown like the Chloe paddington bag in the first outfit.

Colourful Cardigan and Printed Tops

Purple cardigan with printed tanks 3 outfit ideas | awayfromblue

The fun thing with a bright, single colour cardigan like this purple one is that it's so easy to wear with printed pieces in your outfit. The lack of print on it means it will go with anything. Stripes is my favourite combo, as you can see here! But a plain cardigan will go with any print you want to wear.

Draped Cardigan and Maxi Skirts

3 ways to wear a purple cardigan with maxi skirts | away from blue

With a loose, drapey waterfall cardigan you'd usually follow the 'one fitted, one flowy' rule to balance your outfit. But I like the casual outfit created with a long maxi skirt and this long cardigan. It's a nice way to wear a maxi skirt outside of summer! And as you can see from the last picture, a cardigan is the perfect piece to wear when babywearing, soft for baby to cuddle up to when he's in the carrier.

Purple Cardigan and Dresses

4 ways to wear a purple cardigan with dresses | away from the blue

The last way that you can wear a purple cardigan is with dresses! I smiled when I put this picture together as it shows off some of the other things I'd mentioned above! A purple cardigan with purple accessories, a neutral black dress, with blue, and with prints. Just like it does with with maxi skirts, a cosy and colourful cardigan is a nice way to make a spring or summer dress work into autumn, especially when paired with ankle boots!

I really like the beautiful purple shade of this cardigan, and I find it so easy to wear. One of those purchases that's proved it's worth in my wardrobe. I have had to spend a little more than what I originally paid on it after I accidentally snagged it and got a hole in it. Thankfully my tailor repaired it very affordably, and this cardigan will continue to be worn and loved in my wardrobe for a long time still.

Hopefully these outfit ideas gave you some ways to wear a purple cardigan, or even just a colourful cardigan, that you own. If you don't have one, it is very versatile as you can see from the outfits above, so I've included some similar pieces below you can shop.

What I Bought In May & How I've Worn It - Jeanswest Waterfall Drape Cardigan

While I did do some shopping, there is no haul video this month. One of my purchases hasn't arrived and so I'll wait until then to film a video. Instead, I'll share with you the two pieces that I do have after buying them this month.

Jeanswest had a 30% off sale on knitwear, so as I usually do, I checked the site 'just to browse' and saw this beautiful waterfall drape cardigan. I ended up buying two!

The cardigan comes in three colours, so I went to the store to try them on, and ended up loving both colours I tried on and bought both. After donating 3 of the cardigans I'd just unboxed from my boxes of winter clothes I pulled out of storage though I felt justified in doing so!

As you can see from the photos below of how I wore the cardigans, you can wear them two ways which instantly appealed to me.

What I Bought:

There are two buttons, one on each shoulder of the cardigan, and a button hole at the bottom of each hem. That means you can button up one or both sides of the cardigan when you wear it (like I did here). It's ideal for breastfeeding, as it turns your cardigan into a breastfeeding cover, and is something I wish I had when I was breastfeeding. I used to have to hold baby and the cardigan over the top of him when using my cardigans as breastfeeding covers. While my breastfeeding days are behind me, I'm still tagging breastfeeding friendly outfits on the blog. I'll just be making use of the feature when I want to wear these cardigans differently!

When I buy things, I think of two ways to wear them. With the buttons making these cardigans adaptable, it was an easy purchase to make as I have so many more ways to wear them. I'm thinking that the new thicker red cardigan will get worn more than the light one it replaced too.

How I Wore It:

Jeanswest waterfall drape cardigan 2018 5 ways to wear red and navy | awayfromtheblue blog

I'm pleased I was able to wear these cardigans so soon after I bought them, unlike the last knit I bought back at the start of autumn when it took weeks for the weather to cool.

Special mention also to these two lovely kimonos the boys got me for Mother's Day that were added to my wardrobe in May!

For the third thing I bought, I will share a reveal video as soon as it arrives. I ordered something from the Rebecca Minkoff online sample sale. There will be a delay in shipping as the sale was so popular, and it takes a while to reach Australia from the US too. Can't wait for it to arrive. Make sure you're subscribed to my YouTube channel to see it before it reaches the blog!

Baby T and What I've Been Wearing While Caring For A Newborn

Baby T has arrived! He is a beautiful baby boy, and I've already shared a few photos on instagram, @awayfromblue. A few people have been waiting for something to show up on the blog too, so put together this quick post between nap times.

Thank you all so much for your kind words and comments while I've been preoccupied with our beautiful little baby.

I've relied on my scheduled "maternity wardrobe essentials" posts and haven't been sharing what I've been wearing lately as my outfits have been very boring and repetitive. In hospital, I wore pyjamas mostly. I did "dress up" in trackie dacks (sweats) and a breastfeeding singlet during visiting hours.

Now that we are home, I haven't varied that uniform too much. I'm still in my PJs a lot of the time, as life revolves around baby T and we are trying to settle into a routine. Not at all ashamed to admit that at this early stage, getting dressed is pretty much reserved for when we have visitors or we need to go somewhere!

This is a daily outfit blog though, so I'll continue to share what I wear  - when I have ventured out of the house, and have had time or remembered to take a picture. I've always shared what I actually wear here, and as it was fun to share my pregnancy looks, thought you might like a little insight into the 'first days with a newborn' outfits. They are certainly not the best or most inspiring, but they are definitely practical and comfortable. And when you're running on limited sleep, comfort and ease always wins!

Now your expectations are suitably lowered... ;) This is what I wore for baby T's first outing, a couple of days after we got out of hospital.

Cardigan: Jeanswest Dana drape knit cardi in Boysenberry
Top: Best and Less blue stripe breastfeeding singlet
JeansJeanswest maternity super skinny jeans in antique blue
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs (not pictured)
Bracelets: the usual

Added a cardigan and swapped the comfy PJ pants for my maternity skinny jeans to make this outfit look a little more presentable for baby T's first outing to our local clinic. My maternity jeans will get worn for a while yet - as you can see I still have a bit of baby belly. Not fussed with trying to find clothes to hide it at the moment, sleep is higher on the list of priorities, hehe!

Last worn: purple cardi, maternity skinny jeans, shoes. First time I've worn the top on the blog.
