Weekday Wear Link Up: Printed Maxi Dresses, Denim Jackets and Balenciaga Bags

For today's Weekday Wear Linkup I'm sharing how I made these spaghetti strap maxi dresses more suitable for autumn days when I wore them recently (or not so recently as one I wore to celebrate Easter Sunday with the family last month!).

What I wore:

denim jacket with Balenciaga Day bag in 2005 magenta worn on shoulder | away from the blue

Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
Necklace: Kmart blue multi-colour beaded necklace
Dress: Jeanswest Sophia high-low maxi dress
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star coast blue
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch c/o JORD
BagBalenciaga Day bag in 2005 magenta

Why I wore it:

This mandala print high-low maxi dress is so very pretty! With the fabric, print and little ruffle on the hem, it's quite dressy. Tried to make it a little more casual for this outing to the beach with my mum and the boys one day during the school holidays.

It was a chilly morning too and I wasn't sure how windy it would be near the sea. I shouldn't have worried though, ended up taking this jacket off for most of the day as I sat in the sun watching the kids play.

The Converse were another attempt, like the denim jacket, to dress this outfit down a little and I really liked the combination! The blue went so well with the purple mandala print on the dress. So did the magenta Balenciaga day bag that was overdue another wear.

Last worn: denim jacket, wooden bead necklace, mandala print ruffle hem maxi dress, blue Converse, Balenciaga magenta day bag.

Other ways to weardenim jacket worn 30 ways, mandala print ruffle hem maxi dress for Christmas day, blue Converse and striped shorts, Balenciaga magenta day bag and pencil skirt.

Perfect for pregnancydenim jacket in second trimester, Balenciaga magenta day bag in third trimester.

Why I wore it:

Wore this for a colder and wetter Easter Sunday than expected! I had planned to wear this maxi dress, I wore it last year when we had Easter in lockdown so I was determined to wear it again to have a proper Easter celebration with the family. Even if the rain meant I needed a few more layers! As well as the denim jacket I added ankle boots too, to keep my feet cosy and dry.

Tried to dress this up a little more with the fun beaded statement earrings and the mango Balenciaga envelope clutch. We were only heading over to my parents so a clutch really wasn't needed as I didn't need to carry much, but it did fit my wallet, car keys and phone nicely!

It was so good having a big traditional Easter again, especially as we'd spent 3 days that week in lockdown and I was worried about them extending it! Thankfully it ended early instead of being extended.

Last worn: denim jacket, beaded statement earrings, diamond necklace, floral print maxi dress, tan ankle boots, Balenciaga mango envelope clutch.

Other ways to weardenim jacket and jeans, floral print maxi dress worn 30 ways, tan ankle boots and swing dress, Balenciaga mango envelope clutch with pink.

How You Can Wear It:

A maxi dress is so easy to dress up or dress down depending on the occasion. A denim jacket, Converse and a big hobo bag can dress it down for the day time, but accessories like an envelope clutch and statement earrings can dress it up for a formal occasion too.

Adding Colour to Monochrome Black Stripe Outfits

Adding a little touch of colour to otherwise monochromatic black and white striped denim outfits for autumn. Wore these back in April when a light layer is all you need for Brisbane's autumn weather.

What I wore:

pink tee and tassel earings to add colour to monochromatic black and white stripe duster and skinny jeans outfit | awayfromblue

pink and black shorts and tee outfit with Rebecca Minkoff Julian nylon backpack in bright blue | awayfromblue

awayfromblue Instagram | pink tee with monochrome black stripe duster skinny jeans pirate ship outfit

Earrings: Ana Luisa 'Olivia' tassel earrings in pink
JacketKmart striped maxi cardigan
Necklace: Lovisa gold filigree heart pendant
TeeCotton On deep v tee in washed desert rose
JeansNobody Denim Siren skinny super high-rise jeans in power black denim (c/o)
ShoesNew Balance Coast women's running shoe in black
BagRebecca Minkoff Julian nylon backpack in bright blue

Why I wore it:

Not the first time I've worn this pink tee with black! I really like the combination, and I thought that these blush pink and gold earrings complimented the berry pink shade of the v-neck tee nicely.

Without the pink tee and earrings - and of course the bright blue Rebecca Minkoff Julian nylon backpack, this was a pretty dark outfit with the black Nobody Denim skinny jeans, black New Balance sneakers and the black and white striped duster. The pink lightens it up nicely!

Wore this to visit the markets and tour a pirate ship with the kids. Notorious, a handbuilt replica of a 14th century pirate ship was in our local harbour and we just had to go check it out. Luckily the rain held off until we were getting some lunch at the markets and we didn't get too wet when it did start as we were on our way home.

I thought the bag was a better choice than a handbag to hold all the water bottles and some snacks for the boys. I'm glad I wore it too as it was a tight squeeze on the ship and this sits pretty close when I wear it on my back.

What I wore:

print mixing adding colour to monochrome stripe tank and shorts outfit with navy tie dye kimono backpack sneakers | away from the blue

Jacket: Jeanswest Kensley summer tie-dye kimono

Shorts: Jeanswest Heather Bermuda short in black
ShoesNew Balance Coast women's running shoe in black
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch c/o JORD
BagRebecca Minkoff Julian nylon backpack in bright blue

Why I wore it:

This was a much warmer and thankfully rain-free autumn day so I wore a pair of black denim shorts instead of jeans. With the black and white striped tank and again the black New Balance sneakers it was a very dark outfit.

The navy tie dye kimono added a nice touch of blue to brighten the tank and shorts up a bit, as did the Rebecca Minkoff Julian backpack and the magenta marble necklace.

Took the kids out to another local trail. This one is a bit longer than our usual ones but with the supportive sneakers on my feet still easily manageable for my injured knee. It was a bit of a windy day so I was grateful for this kimono keeping my arms and shoulders covered but not overheating me when the wind died down and I felt the full force of the humid weather.

Last worn: navy tie dyed kimono, marble and gold necklace, black striped tank, black denim shorts, New Balance sneakers (above), Rebecca Minkoff Julian backpack (above).

Other ways to wearnavy tie dyed kimono with green jeans, black striped tank and maxi skirt, black denim shorts under a dressRebecca Minkoff Julian backpack and midi dress.

How You Can Wear It:

Black and white stripes is a classic combo worn with denim. It's easy to lighten up a little by adding a brighter tee, topper, accessory, or bag to your outfit, like I've done with these ones.

30 Ways to Wear Kmart Floral Print Tiered Maxi Dress & Weekday Wear Link Up

A 30 ways to wear post for today's Weekday Wear Link Up! So pleased I've hit 30 wears on this Kmart coral floral print tiered maxi dress. I think it's the perfect way to showcase that you don't need to spend a lot of money to have clothes that last. Even if your budget restricts you to buying fast fashion from brands like Kmart you can minimise the environmental impact of your shopping by buying less and rewearing what you own. The most sustainable item of clothing is the one already in your wardrobe.

30 Ways To Wear: Kmart Tropicana Floral Tiered Maxi Dress

Kmart Tropicana Coral Floral Print Tiered Maxi Dress Worn 30 ways wardrobe remix | away from blue blog

This pretty maxi dress was an impulse buy back in 2016, something I'd seen on Instagram on a few Aussie mums and had to get myself! I think it was a great impulse buy in the end! I knew that with all the different colours in the print it would go with so much, and I've been able to dress it up and dress it down over the years.

Note that this dress has broken and I have repaired it. One of the straps snapped off. But it was easily reattached and it's pretty impressive that its lasted this long with just that small fault. It really has been a staple in my wardrobe. And while I don't see it being worn and shared on Instagram now by the people who inspired me to buy it in the first place, I know it will continue to be a go-to piece for me for a long time yet, and still frequently reworn.

Since edging closer to and finally reaching 30 wears with this dress, it's made me realise I'd rather buy less (even at those bargain Kmart prices) and pick pieces I'd be happy to wear over and over again when I do buy. This dress proves even cheap Kmart or fast fashion pieces can go the distance in your wardrobe!

Cost Per Wear

This floral maxi dress was a cheap and cheerful $25 at Kmart back at the end of 2016. With 30 wears so far, that works out to 83 cents a wear, pretty good! I've never had a problem trying to think of more ways to wear this dress, it goes with so much and even though my go-to is to layer over the top of it, it is perfect worn on its own as well. Here are all the ways I've worn it, with the Weekday Wear Link Up at the end.

Coral Floral Maxi Dress and Yellow

3 different ways to wear yellow with a coral printed floral maxi dress away from blue

Coral and yellow are a really nice combination! In each of these 3 outfits I'm wearing a slightly different shade of yellow with the coral maxi dress but it works so well, even though there is no yellow in the print.

Coral Floral Maxi Dress and Pink Bag

3 different shades of pink bags you can wear with a coral printed tiered maxi dress awayfromtheblue blog

Coral and pink is a combination I was unsure about trying at first - even with the pretty pink flowers in the print of this dress! But I'm glad I gave it a go. Like the yellow above, all these shades of pink went great with the floral print.

Tiered Floral Maxi Dress With White Layers

3 white layered outfit ideas for a bright floral tiered maxi dress awayfromblue

If you're ever unsure what colour to wear with a bright printed piece like this, go with neutrals! Again there is no white in the print on this dress but these white toppers (and the white Louis Vuitton damier azur Neverfull) compliment the print nicely.

Matching Accessories To The Print In A Floral Dress

4 ways to wear floral tiered maxi dress picking colours out of the print for accessories awayfromtheblue

With all the pretty shades of blue in the floral print, of course I was going to bring out my matchy-matchy side and pair this dress with blue accessories! Blue, navy and turquoise are easy choices - from a big bold scarf to a little blue or turquoise tassel necklace.

Tiered Maxi Dress and Light Layers

3 ways to layer a bright floral maxi dress kmart tropicana spring autumn away from blue

When it's just a bit too cool for a spaghetti strap maxi dress, a light layer like a denim jacket or a waterfall jacket is perfect for keeping the chill off and keeping your shoulders covered. Ideal for autumn or spring!

Floral Maxi Dress Layered For Winter

Kmart coral floral print tiered tropicana maxi dress layered 4 ways for winter awayfromblue

This coral maxi dress is a very summery colour, style and print. But with the mild Brisbane winters it's easy to layer this up a little bit for a colder day! Knits, leather jackets, boots, scarves, layer easily with this dress and it's nice to wear something so colourful and cheerful in winter.

Knotted Tees Over Floral Print Maxi Dress

4 outfits ideas for kmart floral tiered maxi dress layered with tees awayfromblue blog

As you've seen from all these outfits, I do love layering a tee over this maxi dress! A knotted tee on top is an easy way to change up the look of a dress no matter how many times you've worn it.

Dressing Up and Down a Coral Floral Print Dress

same dress, different day, 6 ways to wear the kmart tropican floral print tiered maxi dress in coral dressed up and down awayfromtheblue

Sometimes simple is best - this dress looks great worn on its own. Dressed up for Christmas day or a birthday party, or dressed down with converse or over a bikini for the beach. A floral maxi dress like this really is a wardrobe staple! Add a different bag, necklace or shoes and you've got the same dress working again for a different day!

Olive and Mustard Outfits With Blue Bags

I really like olive and mustard together! For Monday's post I shared some yellow and blue outfits, this time around it's yellow and olive green, with a little touch of blue.

What I wore:

mustard tee, olive embroidered shorts and sneakers, blue Julian nylon backpack mum style | awayfromblue

Rebecca Minkoff Julian nylon backpack in bright blue | awayfromtheblue

Necklace: Colette tortoise shell acrylic disc tassel necklace
Tee: Big W mustard v-neck tee
Shorts: Jeanswest Tessa olive embroidered shorts
ShoesNew Balance Coast women's running shoe in black
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch c/o JORD
BagRebecca Minkoff Julian nylon backpack in bright blue

Why I wore it:

This was a fun day! After the school run I took my youngest out to a messy play day. Something we used to do and enjoy regularly before Covid last year. It was so good to attend again. They've been running them for a while as life returned to normal quickly here after the first lockdown in March 2020 when we reached no cases, but we've always had something else on so couldn't make it before. It was an Easter theme so lots of eggs and bunnies and my son really enjoyed it. I just wanted a simple outfit as I know from experience there can be a little bit of mess that makes its way onto me!

So I wore simple soft shorts (these olive ones are a staple this summer) and a bright tee. This mustard one hasn't been worn in a while and surprisingly I've never worn it with these shorts before! I really like yellow with these olive shorts so it was interesting to see I hadn't put these two pieces together before. Added the tortoiseshell tassel necklace to try dress this up just a little.

The blue Rebecca Minkoff Julian nylon backpack is another touch of colour with the outfit but I just picked it as it's easy to clean with a baby wipe, in anticipation of it getting dirty during messy play!

Last worn: mustard tee, tortoiseshell necklace, olive shorts, New Balance sneakers, Rebecca Minkoff Julian nylon backpack.

Other ways to wearmustard tee and maxi skirt, olive shorts with navy, Rebecca Minkoff Julian nylon backpack and midi dress.

Necklace: thrifted cream and navy statement flat bead necklace
Top: Kmart short sleeve textured dolman top in marigold
Jeans: Jeanswest Vicki skinny pant in moss green
Shoesthrifted Adidas Superstar sneakers
BagRebecca Minkoff Love Too in deep teal croc embossed leather

Why I wore it:

I'd planned to wear this (almost more orange than mustard top) with the olive shorts above, but a cooler and rainy autumn day meant I went with jeans instead. Luckily I have these olive green skinny jeans so I could still wear the colour combo I had planned.

This was such a comfortable outfit for working from home and then spending some time with my mum in the afternoon. This marigold ribbed batwing sleeve top is so perfectly slouchy and such a cheerful colour, and these jeans are so comfortable. I wore them when we flew to Europe a couple years ago. The statement necklace helped dress it up a little too.

I thought the teal Rebecca Minkoff Love Too bag would be a nice touch with the olive jeans, teal and olive are a surprisingly good combination.

How You Can Wear It

Mustard and olive looks so good together! You can even introduce a third colour to your outfit with an accessory like a bag too, for an even more colourful and cheerful outfit.

Magnificent 8 Statement Pants: Pink and Black Jeans Outfits With Balenciaga Part Time Bag

For this quarter's Magnificent 8 posts, all 8 ladies decided to style some statement pants. We are all styling our different pants in unique ways, scroll on down to see the outfits I wore to meet the theme and find links to the other ladies blogs. Because you can be stylish at any age!

I don't actually have a lot of pants in my wardrobe - jeans are my staple for cooler days when tights under a dress or skirt won't cut it! But with some autumn weather finally arriving a month or so late in April in Brisbane, it was the perfect time to wear some of my more statement jeans and meet the theme.

What I wore:

Necklace: Tiffany & Co silver 5th Avenue notes heart pendant necklace
TeeCotton On deep v tee in washed desert rose
JeansSass & Bide Playman skinny jeans
Shoes:  New Balance Coast women's running shoe in black
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch c/o JORD
BagBalenciaga part time in black 2010 with SGH

Why I wore it:

Refusing to believe that it's cardigan weather as we've had such a warm autumn so far, I didn't add a topper on this outfit, thinking jeans and a tee was warm enough for this autumn day. It was a bit chilly on the school run though, and with a bit of a breeze I was wishing I'd picked up a jacket or cardigan whenever we reached a shady section on our bike ride around the park. It was perfectly warm in the sun though for jeans and a tee, but running errands after I wished again I'd worn a jacket.

Not an outfit fail though as I liked this outfit otherwise! These chevron print Sass and Bide skinny jeans are really fun to wear. I've tried wearing printed pieces with them a few times in the past, with mixed results. A plain block colour piece, like this pink v-neck tee, is a much better pairing as it lets the printed jeans be the only statement with the outfit.

Carried my black Balenciaga part time bag to fit snacks and water bottles - and since my youngest's latest birthday he's old enough to join his big brother at sports on a Monday evening. This bag is plenty big enough for all of our water bottles for that.

Last worn: pink v-neck tee, aqua earrings, silver Tiffany necklace, Sass and Bide chevron print jeans, New Balance sneakers, Balenciaga black part time bag.

Other ways to wearpink v-neck tee and maxi skirtSass and Bide chevron print jeans and leather jacket, Balenciaga black part time bag worn 30 ways.

Perfect for pregnancyBalenciaga black part time bag in second trimester.

30 Ways To Wear: Balenciaga Part Time Bag

What I wore:

Necklace: silver heart long pendant necklace

JeansSass & Bide The Winning Day Lovestate jeans in magenta
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in black
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch c/o JORD
BagBalenciaga part time in black 2010 with SGH

Why I wore it:

What a day this was! Had a simple relaxing weekend planned, with a bike ride around the track at the playground in the morning, as well as a stop at the library. Afterwards we grabbed some more soil (and some snags for lunch!) at Bunnings so we could plant the rest of our Woolworths discovery garden seedlings outside. Actually managed to raise quite a few seeds to the 'ready for planting' stage, hopefully I can keep them alive this time and get a better harvest than we did a couple years back where the smoke from the bushfires and the heatwaves killed everything off!

Unfortunately what was supposed to be a quiet afternoon planting in the garden turned into a minor trip to the hospital for my son after he managed to injure himself! Thankfully we were seen and got back home fairly quickly, in time for dinner and a movie to help us all de-stress and recover.

Again this outfit is black and pink, this time around with a printed top and plain jeans. These bright magenta jeans are also from Sass and Bide and one of the few pairs of straight legged jeans I have in my wardrobe. I like the bright statement magenta colour and I find these really wearable! To let the pants shine again I kept the rest of my outfit simple with the neutral black and white striped tank, the black Balenciaga part time bag again and my black and white Converse.

How You Can Wear It:

Statement jeans are easy to pair with basic tops in your wardrobe - a colourful v-neck tee works well with printed skinny jeans. For brighter print-free denim, try a printed top instead. A neutral will really help the bright jeans pop!

Weekday Wear Link Up: Blue and Yellow Tanks, Denim Shorts and Kimono Outfits

Colourful blue and yellow outfits with denim shorts, tanks and kimonos for today's Weekday Wear Link Up. Both the blue and yellow tanks are the same style, I just had to buy it in two different colours when it went on sale 😅

What I wore:

Shorts: Jeanswest Trinity Bermuda denim shorts
ShoesNew Balance Coast women's running shoe in black
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch c/o JORD
BagRebecca Minkoff Love Too in deep teal croc embossed leather

Why I wore it:

What a surprising day! Just as we pulled up to school they announced on the radio that Brisbane would be going into lockdown that night and it would be my son's last day of school for the term. There had been a couple of events and activities planned for the last week of school so that was a bit upsetting - but to be honest my son handled it better than I did! I kept remembering when this happened in 2020 and we went into lockdown to end the school term early and it turned into weeks at home and online learning...so glad it wasn't the case this year and the 3 day Brisbane lockdown was actually lifted early.

Thankfully my son's teacher still welcomed me to help out in his class room as normal, even if we did a few different things to help her cram a weeks worth of last week of term activities into one day instead of our regular helping with learning! The school handled it well. One of the activities planned for the end of the school day still went ahead, so we were able to enjoy that at school pick up before heading home to start lockdown, as sports later that evening was cancelled so we wouldn't be out when lockdown came into effect.

I had a grocery delivery coming the next day that I'd ordered online as usual so I didn't need to join any queues at the supermarkets, unlike last time there was a surprise lockdown and we were out of bread. My youngest son and I did decide to go get a few more books from the library though, just in case the 3 day lockdown was extended. We were not the only ones stocking up on books! 😅 I was jealous of the lady who turned up with a literal cart and just started filling it with books!

It was nice I had picked such a cheerful outfit for a stressful day - this mustard yellow tank looks really good with the navy floral duster kimono, and I thought the teal earrings were a nice bit of matchy-matchy with the teal Rebecca Minkoff Love Too bag.

What I wore:

Tank: Jeanswest Maya gather back tank in mid turquoise
Shorts: Jeanswest Heather Bermuda short in black
ShoesNew Balance Coast women's running shoe in black

Why I wore it:

Wore this for a little stroll along our favourite trail. This turquoise tank is such a bold shade of blue and it pairs so nicely with yellow! So this outfit is a blue tank and yellow kimono, inverse of the one above! Wore this a few days before the lockdown announcement, when it wasn't even on our mind.

Thought bright and colourful would be nice for our little walk, and of course I needed my New Balance sneakers to provide support along the trail. Took my big Louis Vuitton neverfull tote to fit all our water bottles and some snacks in - it's a big bag but it's so light and is perfect for carrying along all the kids things as well as mine!

Again I stuck with denim Bermuda shorts, these black ones matched the shoes and balanced out the bright blue and yellow nicely I thought.

Last worn: yellow kimono, navy tassel necklace, turquoise tank, black denim shorts, New Balance sneakers (above), Louis Vuitton Neverfull tote.

Other ways to wearyellow kimono and olive green, turquoise tank and pencil skirt, black denim shorts and a dress, Louis Vuitton Neverfull tote and maxi dress.

How You Can Wear It

Blue and yellow look so good together - in any shade combination! Try mustard yellow and navy, or even blue denim! And turquoise works well with and equally bright and sunny shade of yellow too.

Navy and Green Shorts Outfits With Sneakers and Blue Bags

I've been wearing a lot of blue lately! While I used to be a bit scared of blue and green together it's a combination I've really started embracing. Any shade of blue and green look so good together, as you can see in these simple outfits with different shades of green.

Because even though it's officially autumn, Brisbane keeps the summer heat around for a while, so my shorts are worn into April!

What I wore:

navy scoop neck cropped tee with olive embroidered pull on shorts sneakers rebeca minkoff love too bag

Rebecca Minkoff Love Too in deep teal croc embossed leather with olive shorts | awayfromtheblue

awayfromtheblue instagram navy cropped tee with olive soft shorts deep teal rebecca minkoff love too bag

Shorts: Jeanswest Tessa olive embroidered shorts
ShoesNew Balance Coast women's running shoe in black
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch c/o JORD
BagRebecca Minkoff Love Too in deep teal croc embossed leather

Why I wore it:

This outfit was really an excuse to wear this teal Rebecca Minkoff Love Too bag again! It's true to its name of deep teal so I thought it would work well against a navy and green outfit. And this navy cropped tee works well with the comfortable slouchy olive embroidered shorts.

I really liked this outfit - while it was a little cooler in the morning and evening it was warmer during the day and this was super comfortable for a day of working from home. Did have to take my son to an appointment in the afternoon, so wore my supportive New Balance sneakers as they are good for my knee on the longish drive.

What I wore:

Tank: Jeanswest Jenni basic singlet in emerald green
Shorts: Jeanswest Valerie yarn dye stripe short in navy and white
Shoesthrifted Adidas Superstar sneakers
BagRebecca Minkoff 2012 sky grey mini MAC bag

Why I wore it:

Again a green and navy shorts outfit! This time around with a green top and these navy striped culotte shorts. This green tank was definitely overdue another wear and the fitted top tucked into the shorts is a great way to show off the cute paper bag waist on the culottes. I was just working from home during the day, but I had a dentist appointment in the afternoon so I went with a statement necklace to dress up the outfit a little. Wore my cute little Rebecca Minkoff sky blue mini MAC bag as I only needed a few essentials at the dentist.

I thought the bright colour of the green top combined with the statement necklace would help cheer me up a little as I'm not a fan of the dentist. It just seemed to confuse the receptionist though who pointed out Saint Patrick's Day was the week before 😅 Made me laugh before my appointment though, clever move on their part to help me relax a little more!

How You Can Wear It:

Green and blue are a wonderful colour combination! Any shade works well together but you can't beat navy. As you can see in these pics it works well with more muted greens like olive in the first outfit, or bolder brighter greens like in the second outfit.
