Weekday Wear Linkup! Printed Tanks, Waterfall Cardigans & Grey Pencil Skirts

Wearing some bright tanks into the office for today's Weekday Wear Linkup. The bright colours seemed so perfect for spring, and the cosy cardigans on top were needed in the cooler morning and evening commute.

What I wore:

Necklace: thrifted blue multi stand long beaded necklace
TopJeanswest Elissa leaf print tank
SkirtAtmos&Here grey marle jersey pencil skirt
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs silver tuxedo flats
BagRebecca Minkoff medium MAB tote in moon navy

Why I wore it:

I really liked all the colours in this outfit! This grey jersey pencil skirt might be a little too casual for some offices, but in my business casual office it works fine, especially with a cute printed top. This leaf print tank is a firm favourite and one of those pieces that looks just as good with shorts as it does with a skirt for the office! The red cardigan matched the red leaves in the print nicely, and added even more colour to the outfit.

With the navy Rebecca Minkoff medium MAB tote bag and the navy necklace matching, I decided to throw in just a little extra colour and wear my newly purchased teal earrings with this outfit. I really liked the extra touch of colour and the statement earrings worked well even with the statement necklace.

Last worn: red cardigan, navy beaded necklace, leaf print tank, grey jersey pencil skirt, silver ballet flats, Rebecca Minkoff MAB tote bag. First time I've worn the earrings on the blog as they are  a recent purchase.

Why I wore it:

Same outfit formula as the one above, just changing up the colours slightly! Again I went for a grey pencil skirt with a cosy cardigan, a navy one this time that matched the Rebecca Minkoff MAB tote nicely. I added some colour to these neutrals with the coral brushstroke striped tank and a turquoise and white beaded necklace. This necklace is another new purchase, an awesome thrift find and a nice way to introduce another colour to my outfit.

Couldn't decide what flats to wear with this so went with this camel pair that go with everything. A simple outfit for a busy day at work.

How You Can Wear It:

A cosy waterfall cardigan in a plain block colour is a nice way to add comfort, warmth and extra colour to your outfit. You can keep it simple and match it to the print in your top, or add a contrasting colour to a bright top like I have in the second outfit.

30 Ways To Wear: Grey Maxi Cardigan

I'm sharing another outerwear piece for this months 30 ways to wear post! Last month I showed you 30 ways to wear a camel trench coat, this month it's this lovely grey longline maxi cardigan (also known as a duster) from Jeanswest, in the cosiest Australian wool.

Every month I share something I've worn more than 30 times to give you some ideas and inspiration for how you can wear a similar piece in your wardrobe. Inspired by the 30 wears challenge I first heard about in The True Cost documentary.

30 Ways To Wear: Grey Maxi Cardigan

30 Ways To Wear: Grey Wool Maxi Cardigan Awayfromtheblue blog

It does feel a little strange sharing this cardigan right now, in the middle of spring when it's been packed away for a few weeks! It's a very thick and cosy Australian wool cardigan, perfect for a Brisbane winter, but not something that's been needed much in the hot spring we've had so far. I was so happy to realise I'd hit 30 wears with it though this year (35 to be exact) so I was eager to share it.

Cost Per Wear

I picked up this 'Alice' wool cardigan in the Jeanswest autumn sale back in 2017, so I've had it 2 and a half years. I paid $88.15 for it, and with 35 wears so far that works out to $2.50 a wear. Still more wears to go to reach the "$1 per wear" figure most people aim for, but I'm impressed that I've worn it so much so far. 35 wears over 3 winters is about 12 wears a year, and given that our winter weather barely lasts three months in Brisbane that's a great number! It's something I like reaching for over and over when it's chilly.

It is definitely showing its age, there's a lot of pilling on it as it's been worn and washed. I've run a fuzzball remover over it a few times but it's quite a thick wool so I'm not sure you see much of a difference, ha! It's still so cosy and comfortable though so I will continue to wear it, nothing wrong with pieces looking a little lived in! It's expected for wool to have pilling over time I think anyway.

Grey Maxi Cardigan And Bright Jeans

grey maxi cardigan and bright colourful denim skinny jeans | away from the blue

A nice neutral, long cardigan like this is wonderful to wear with different coloured denim! I love wearing my red, green and purple skinny jeans with this cardigan, it's a fun and colourful way to stay cosy through winter. This longline cardigan looks great with skinny jeans in any shade.

Grey Cardigan and Printed Jeans

ways to wear grey maxi cardigan and printed jeans 4 outfit ideas | awayfromblue

Of course it's not just colourful jeans I'll wear with grey maxi cardigan with, I have a couple of pairs of printed jeans too and this cardigan works equally well with printed denim. Pairing this cardigan with the Sass & Bide chevron printed jeans is a frequent go-to, as you can see! If you're a fan of leggings, you could try printed leggings instead.

Maxi Cardigan And Scarves

wool duster cardigan with blanket scarves ways to wear | awayfromtheblue

This wool cardigan is so cosy in winter, but sometimes you need a little extra layer to keep you warm, especially on a windy day. A big blanket scarf comes in helpful, and with the cardigan being a neutral plain block colour you can pick any printed scarf to wear with it. Leopard is a favourite of mine!

Longline Cardigan With Jeans and Boots

5 ways to wear longline duster maxi cardigan with jeans and boots | away from the blue blog

Sometimes a scarf, wool cardigan and jeans just isn't enough on a cold day, so you have to pull out the boots as well! The longline of this cardigan looks so great when paired with tall boots, although as you can see in the last photo there ankle boots work just as well.

Grey Cardigan With Grey Jeans

monochromatic outfit grey skinny jeans and maxi cardigan with bright accessories and printed tops | awayfromblue

Going monochromatic and pairing a grey cardigan with a grey pair of jeans lets you have more fun with the res of your outfit - either picking bright and colourful accessories like scarves or shoes or bags, or a brightly coloured tee to break up all the grey. I like matching things together, and a grey cardigan and jeans are a great combination.

Maxi Cardigan With Skirts And Dresses

grey maxi cardigan with skirts and dresses outfit ideas | away from blue blog

I do wear this grey maxi cardigan a lot with jeans, but I've worn it with dresses and skirts too! These three outfits show you how you can wear a maxi cardigan with a maxi dress, pencil skirt, or maxi skirt. It's a nice cosy warm layer to add on top of a skirt or dress.

Grey Cardigan With Simple Tops and Jeans

simple grey cardigan with jeans and plain tee outfit ideas for fall | away from the blue

Of course, the simplest outfits are the best! A neutral grey maxi cardigan like this is the perfect throw on and go layer on top of a simple jeans and tee (or jeans and tank!) outfit when it's a little too chilly for bare arms. It's fuss free as it really does go with everything, as you've seen from these 30 different ways to wear it.

3 Ways To Wear a Ribbon Scarf (and a Giveaway!)

A special giveaway today! You know I love my scarves so I was very happy when Liberty contacted me to offer me one of her ribbon scarves. I picked the pink one but all are beautiful! Despite my large scarf collection, I've never tried a ribbon scarf before, and I really liked this one.

With help from Shelbee and Liberty, I'm sharing 3 ways you can wear a ribbon scarf, plus how you can win one of your own! There are 3 to giveaway, one for each blog!

What I wore:

Why I wore it:

I wore this back in September and a longer sleeved top with a scarf and tights may have been a bit overkill for spring (especially with the higher than average temperatures in Brisbane!) but it was my first day back at work after being sick and I wanted to be cosy and warm.

With the neutral black henley top, ballet flats and grey pencil skirt, I used my accessories to add a little colour. This magenta Rebecca Minkoff quilted Edie bag goes so well with the different shades of pink in the ribbon scarf. The scarf kept me cosy and made me smile through the day with the bright colour.

Exactly what you need when starting to feel better - something comfortable to wear and some colourful accessories to make you smile!

Last worn: black henley, grey pencil skirt, black ballet flats, Rebecca Minkoff Edie bag.

I like how Shelbee matched the autumnal colours in her ribbon scarf with her outfit, the earrings are the perfect match and the animal print shirt compliments the scarf so well. Such a great neutral outfit! See more of Shelbee's outfit on her blog.

Liberty is wearing the beautiful neutral brown ribbon scarf with the cutest teal dress! As it's autumn for her she's layered up a little to keep cosy. The neutral scarf is a perfect accompaniment with the bold teal dress, and works well with the black pieces in her outfit too. Read more about her outfit on Liberty's blog.

Weekday Wear Linkup! Striped Maxi Skirts With Printed Scarves and Slouchy Tees, Rebecca Minkoff Darren Bag

Sharing some casual outfits I wore through the week for today's Weekday Wear Linkup!

You know I love my maxi skirts, especially striped ones! It's fun to introduce another print to a striped skirt by adding a statement scarf, especially if you're wearing a basic block colour tee. Such a simple yet colourful way to dress for spring.

What I wore:

monochrome grey tunic and pinstripe maxi skirt playground outfit with bright striped scarf | awayfromblue

ScarfFashion Scarf Girl zesty stripe tassel scarf in pink
Top: thrifted Cotton on grey tunic tee
Skirt: thrifted pinstripe maxi skirt
ShoesWalnut Melbourne 'Ava' black lizard ballet flats
BagRebecca Minkoff small Darren messenger bag in peony

Why I wore it:

I loved this outfit so much! The maxi skirt is a delicate pinstripe so it looks more grey in pics, but I feel in person you can see the navy pinstripe a bit better (and in the bag closeup shot). I thought it would be fun to match the stripes on the skirt with a striped scarf, and this one added a great touch of colour to the grey outfit. I really like pink and grey together, so wore my Rebecca Minkoff Darren bag to add a little more pink (and to match the blush stripes in the scarf nicely).

A simple and comfortable outfit for a quiet Friday with the kids - we went to the playground in the morning, picked up a few groceries on the way home, and then did some baking. I made a savoury pancake that I used to make for the boys when they were little. They each took one bite and decided they didn't like it anymore, ha! Oh well!

Last worn: striped tassel scarf, grey tunic, pinstripe maxi skirt, black ballet flats, Rebecca Minkoff Darren Bag.

Other ways to wearstriped tassel scarf and boucle blazergrey tunic in the office, pinstripe maxi skirt and neon bag, black ballet flats and jeans, Rebecca Minkoff Darren Bag and sundress.

Skirt: thrifted Cotton On navy and grey striped maxi skirt (new purchase)
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in white
BagRebecca Minkoff small Darren messenger bag in peony

Why I wore it:

A bit of an early morning photoshoot! I set my alarm a little earlier than the boys get up to have some quiet time to myself each morning - I read my bible, do a little bit of blog work and then get them up and get their breakfast before we all get dressed for the day. When I woke up on this Monday morning and saw the fog, I decided instead of relaxing to get up, get dressed, and go out to snap some photos.

I went out on the street to get a better pic of the fog, and passed one of my neighbours. Luckily, it's easy to explain why you're carting a camera and tripod around when the streets are so foggy - he was happy with my "taking pictures of the fog!" explanation and it was easy to move a little further down the street and be hidden by the fog so he couldn't see, ha! But I think I'll stick to backyard photos!

I'd planned to wear this navy tee as I knew it would match so nicely with the navy stripes in the maxi skirt, but I did have to add the denim jacket as I went out the door as it was a little chilly at 6am, even with the big bright scarf. I thought the navy and pink combo was a fun one, even though the blush pink Rebecca Minkoff Darren bag doesn't match the pale pink diamonds on the scarf exactly it was a nice combination. I ended up taking the scarf and denim jacket off later in the day when out with the boys as it warmed up so nicely!

Last worn: denim jacket, pink diamond scarf, Converse, Rebecca Minkoff Darren bag (above). First time I've posted the navy tee and striped maxi skirt on the blog as they are recent purchases.

A striped maxi skirt is a great basic for mum-life, especially when paired with a plain block colour tee. For a little extra colour and interest, you can add contrasting accessories like I have here with the pink scarves and bag. Perfect for spring!

Shopping Haul: What I Bought In September & How I've Worn It

So.....after a rather large haul last month I wasn't expecting to buy much of anything this month. I ended up impulse buying quite a few things, with all of the sales going on tempting me!

What I Bought In September: Haul Video

In the video:

  • Kmart teal tassel earrings
  • Kmart mustard gold tassel earrings
  • Kmart teal floral print midi dress
  • Target Preview navy long sleeve collared shirt
  • thrifted cream and navy statement flat bead necklace
  • thrifted black and grey floral crystal statement necklace
  • thrifted statement gunmetal hardware necklace
  • thrifted Equip turquoise cream multi strand bead necklace

Why I Bought It:

With an event looming in October, I needed to find an outfit that fit the dress code. After trying a few options in my wardrobe I decided nothing was quite what I wanted to wear, and so I decided to hit up some local opshops. I had an idea in my head for what I needed to complete my outfit - either an accessory or something to go over my dress.

After spending a week looking for the perfect outfit topper I gave up and decided to go for an accessory instead. The difficulty with looking for necklaces that may work with a formal dress is that you can't wear the formal dress while thrifting, it's a tad overdressed, ha! So I ended up buying a couple of options...and then in the end my mum found the perfect thing in another opshop and bought it for me so I'm not going to wear any of the necklaces I bought to the event! I still like statement necklaces though so expect these to get some wear outside the event, and at just $3 each it was hard to say no.

The Kmart finds were kind of planned. My friend Jess had got an awesome earring haul from the Kmart clearance so I headed into the store to check them out, and ended up spotting this pretty floral dress too reduced to just $12 so that had to come home with me as well!

The Target blouse was a last minute buy at the end of the month - I went into Target to check out the clearance sale and this was reduced from $39 to just $10 so I had to buy it. Luckily for my wallet, none of the other bargains (tops for $5!) I tried on fit right on me.

How I've Worn It:

As you would expect from impulse buys, I didn't manage to wear everything twice to reach my goal of 'wearing things twice in the month I buy them'. A big flag to me that even if it's a bargain I don't need to buy everything I see! I need to take a moment to stop and consider how things will work for my life ahead for the month. After completing #6monthsWithoutShopping 2 years ago I was doing pretty well curbing the impulse buys, I need to make sure I don't fall back into my bad habits!

I do expect I will get wear from these pieces, but statement earrings and necklaces are not everyday wear for me and something I need to be considerate when I wear - pointy pieces are not good when giving toddler cuddles, and big bold necklaces are not the kind of thing I would normally wear to the playground with the kids.

Next month is "Buy Nothing New Month" and it would be great to achieve it this year! I do still have one Jeanswest gift card left from Christmas though...

The 30% off birthday sale at the Iconic is providing me further temptation, as is the Shopbop sale!

Matching Bags and Scarves With Grey Tees and Striped Maxi Skirts For Spring

Enjoying wearing some of my recnt(ish!) purchases to create some casual and comfortable spring outfits. I love these striped maxi skirts I thrifted back in August and the scarves and bags add the perfect pop of colour for spring.

You might know from reading my blog I love my bright handbags, and I have shared various ways to match them to my outfits before (matching to shoes, matching tees, matching necklaces, etc). Today I'm keeping it simple and matching the accessories together by picking scarves and bags that are similar shades.

What I wore:

mustard yellow scarf and bag with vertical striped maxi skirt grey tee and denim jacket | awayfromblue

Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold | awayfromtheblue

awayfromblue Instagram vertical striped maxi skirt with grey tee mustard yellow accessories matching scarf and bag
Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
Scarf: Fashion Scarf Girl plain crinkle scarf in mustard (new purchase)
Tee: thrifted Cotton on grey tunic tee
Skirt: thrifted SES Fashions vertical stripe maxi skirt
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs metallic mouse flats
BagRebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold

Why I wore it:

I was hopeful that this mustard crinkle scarf would pair nicely with my little mustard Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan bag and was so pleased to see they look great together! While not the exact same shade I think they compliment each other nicely, and were a fun combo with the neutral outfit. As it was a cooler morning, I added the denim jacket to the slouchy grey tee and vertical striped maxi skirt. We had church in the morning too, which is often a little colder with the aircon so the denim jacket was a good choice. Even if I did take it off after church in the heat of the day.

Even though the bag has silver hardware, I thought the gold mouse flats went nicely with the mustard accessories - and they are such fun shoes to wear!

Last worn: denim jacket, mustard crinkle scarf, grey tunic, gold mouse flats, mustard micro Regan bag. First time I've worn the vertical striped maxi skirt on the blog as it's a recent purchase.

Other ways to weardenim jacket and dress, grey tunic and pencil skirt, gold mouse flats and wrap dress, mustard micro Regan bag and jeans.

Why I wore it:

Another simple grey tee and striped maxi skirt with some colourful accessories! This beautiful diamond print scarf has so many colours in it, but I knew I wanted to try wearing it with the equally bright neon pink mini MAC bag. I really liked the two pieces together, and they were the perfect touch with the outfit. The pinstripe maxi skirt always seems so grey in pics, even though it's a fine navy pinstripe. This paired with the darker grey v-neck tee made it a bit monochrome, so the pink was fun to break up the grey a bit!

Simple and colourful outfit for a day with the boys - we spent some time at the playground, library, and a quick visit to our old house, so a pretty busy day.

Weekday Wear Linkup: Textured Jackets, Grey Tees, Pencil Skirts and Rebecca Minkoff Edie Crossbody Bag

Taking advantage of the warmer spring weather in Brisbane and just wearing some light layers to the office. I wore two of my textured jackets with basic grey tees and black pencil skirts and added some colourful scarves for a brighter Weekday Wear Linkup! Even the backdrops are colourful, I stopped by the Brisbane Arcade Spring flower show to get some pretty Instagram pics!

BagRebecca Minkoff Edie small crossbody bag in magenta

Why I wore it:

I couldn't resist wearing all the pink accessories! This magenta Rebecca Minkoff Edie bag really pops against a plain grey tee and black pencil skirt outfit, and I continued the pink theme on with the tassel earrings and the striped scarf. I like how the earrings matched the tassels on the scarf, and the magenta stripes compliment the magenta Rebecca Minkoff Edie bag nicely.

With all the colour and the classic tweed textured jacket, I felt this outfit was dressed up enough for a quiet day at work with few face-to-face meetings. Sometimes I have more virtual meetings than face-to-face ones, especially with the new project I'm on.

Why I wore it:

Another textured jacket - this jacquard one has a metallic thread running though it so it feels a little more 'dressy' option and worked perfectly to make the slouchy and comfy grey tunic and pencil skirt outfit more suitable for a day in the office.

The threading on the jacket looks like stripes, and since I'd had fun lately wearing striped scarves with striped maxi skirts, I thought I'd give the striped scarf and striped jacket combination a try. I really liked this outfit, even if the jacket was a little bit too warm to wear during the day when my friend and I went out for a walk at lunchtime to admire the spring blooms at the Brisbane Arcade. Just like the first outfit, I liked all the pink in this outfit too, even if the scarf and bag are different shades of pink.
