Monochrome Pencil Skirt Outfits With Long Sleeve Tees And Colourful Scarves

Wearing a few of my recent purchases to the office! I managed to pick up a couple of long sleeved tops at the opshop sale last month. While it was nearing the end of winter in Brisbane and getting warmer, it's still quite chilly when I have my commute to work so I knew the long sleeves would be perfect to wear to the office. I'm lucky my dress code is on the casual side of business casual too so a tee is perfectly acceptable, especially when paired with a pencil skirt as I have here.

Keeping things simple, I stuck with monochrome outfits and added a pop of colour with my scarves, topping off my outfits with the fun tassel statement earrings I also bought last month.

What I wore:

ScarfLouis Vuitton monogram shawl in bleu
Tee: thrifted Maison Scotch black paint splatter print long sleeved tee
SkirtJeanswest zip detail ponte pencil skirt
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagMulberry Bayswater in Oak NVT leather

Why I wore it:

Keeping things really simple and going completely monochrome with the black long sleeve tee and black pencil skirt. I usually plan my outfits the night before, and figured the print on the top would stop the outfit looking too boring. When I put it all on in the morning though, I realised the print on the top wasn't doing enough to add a bit of lightness, especially paired with the black pencil skirt, black tights and ankle boots. Even the navy earrings weren't lifting this enough, it looked a bit drab.

The bright blue Louis Vuitton shawl was the perfect solution - a great pop of colour against the black. It also kept me nice and cosy in the morning. I like that spring like weather is arriving again here in Brisbane, but it's still extremely wintery in the early hours!

Last worn: camel trench, Louis Vuitton shawl, black pencil skirt, black ankle boots, Mulberry Bayswater tote bag. It's the first time I've worn the tee on the blog as it's a recent purchase.

Top: thrifted cobalt blue long sleeve tee
SkirtAsos blue textured lace pencil skirt
ShoesAsos leather Chelsea boots in tan
BagMulberry Bayswater in Oak NVT leather

Why I wore it:

Still a monochrome outfit, but sticking with my favourite colour and going blue with the cobalt tee and the lace pencil skirt. I added even more colour to this with the orange scarf, it really pops against blue and I've worn it that way before with a navy dress.

I love how well the navy earrings coordinated with the blues on my outfit and they got a few compliments! I've admired the statement tassel earring trend on the ladies I follow on Instagram for a while, but with particularly curious and grabby toddlers I was sure it was going to be a trend I'd have to let pass me by. Suddenly realised I could do what I do with all other non-kid friendly pieces in my wardrobe and just wear them to work. Even if I do have to take them off as soon as I get home in the afternoon! They were fun to wear and try out for something different from my usual accessories!

While I loved the blue and orange together I really wasn't happy with the ankle boots I chose for this. I am noticing every time I wear these tan boots with black tights it just emphasises how petite I am and makes my legs look a bit stumpy. The longer length pencil skirt doesn't really help! I thought that with the oak Mulberry Bayswater bag it would tie in nicely, but a few times through the day I wished I'd worn my black ankle boots instead.

Bright Scarves Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

A monochrome office outfit makes getting dressed for work easy - even if you haven't planned out your outfit the night before! For an extra touch, you can add a bright contrasting scarf on top. It makes a simple monochrome outfit seem more interesting, keeps you warm on a cold commute and it's a fun way to accessorise.

New Tees and Textured Pencil Skirts With Balenciaga Bags

After I completed my No Buy July challenge, I made up for not shopping for a month and quickly started buying things in August! I picked up two tees from Jeanswest and thought that they would go nicely with my textured pencil skirts for work. Plain tee, busy textured skirt, seems like a fail-safe outfit. I'm wearing the tees in the outfits below, with mixed results!

What I wore:

navy macintosh, jacquared pencil skirt and Louis Vuitton shawl scarf with red tee winter office outfit | awayfromblue

Balenciaga part time in black 2010 with SGH | awayfromtheblue

TeeJeanswest Emma woven trim tee in terracotta (new purchase)
SkirtWarehouse navy jacquard pencil skirt
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs black logo plaque ballet flats
BagBalenciaga part time in black 2010 with SGH

Why I wore it:

I like wearing red and blue together. While I don't have a lot of red in my wardrobe, it's a colour I love accessorising with when I'm wearing something blue. It was nice to switch things up a little and wear this new red tee with a colourful blue scarf for a slight reversal on the usual blue clothes and red accessories combination.

It's the first time I've worn this tee and I really liked it. The shade of red is so easy to wear and it's so soft, definitely my kinda tee. It was my last day at work before going on leave, so I was a bit busy trying to get everything done on time, and it was nice to have a comfortable outfit to wear with all the craziness.

With the bright colours in the outfit, I thought a classic neutral bag would be best to accessorise with and picked my black Balenciaga part time. I've been wearing this bag often lately, it goes with everything and fits a lot, such a good bag and one of my favourites from my Balenciaga handbag collection. I've included a video below for you of my full collection!

Why I wore it:

I didn't like this outfit as much as the one above, even though it follows the same outfit formula (you know I love my outfit formulas!). When I first tried on this tee I had a closer look at the tag as I couldn't really tell what colour it was - what looked green in the store looked more grey in the change rooms. It's officially 'dark green'. I thought I'd take advantage of the deeper olive looking more grey and wear it how I would a grey tee, with blue and purple. I wouldn't normally try the colour combo with olive!

I felt good about my choice in the morning to wear the grey/green tee with the blue lace skirt and purple blanket scarf, even adding in my purple Balenciaga work bag for a bit of matchy-matchy. Reviewing the photos though I worried it looked a bit too olive to work with the purple. Of course I had to get to work so wore it anyway, alternating between liking and being unsure about the combo through the day!

It's funny as I look at the photos now on my computer screen and the tee looks more grey - it's definitely going to be a fun tee to wear. (I have worn it with olive as well and really loved that combo!)

Textured Pencil Skirts Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

With a busy textured skirt, a plain top is a good choice. You don't have to worry about the prints clashing or your outfit being too loud. A classic tee like these ones are good pieces to have in your wardrobe, but if your office dress code is more formal you could swap them out for a plain blouse instead.

Tiered Sundresses In Winter With Cosy Cardigans and Rebecca Minkoff Bags

My previous post was all about wearing summer tanks in winter. This time I'm layering up some of my summer sundresses for winter temps. Both of these tiered strappy sundresses are from Kmart, and I've worn them in the cooler weather in the past although they are definitely most frequently worn in the warmer months. Keeping it simple, I added layers with boots and cardigans to make them work for cooler weather.

What I wore:

navy waterfall cardigan ankle boots tights summer sundress in winter yellow accessories | awayfromblue

Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold | awayfromtheblue

awayfromtheblue instagram tiered sundress in winter with ankle boots tights cardigan yellow accessories
JacketJeanswest waterfall drape cardigan in navy night sky marle
NecklaceStarfish Project Veronica short yellow multi strand necklace
Dress: Kmart Aztec print tiered little black dress
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagRebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold

Why I wore it:

I wore this back near the start of winter, a busy day of rushing around getting last minute party things for 4 Year Old T's birthday. Long story short, the first supermarket we went to didn't have everything we needed, so I had to stop at multiple ones, and we went to 3 different stores in search of things to go on top of the cake before someone changed his mind again and we went back to the first place... 😂

Such a busy day, I wanted a simple outfit so a dress seemed like the best option. I thought everything would look nice until I put it on and realised it was a bit dark with all the black and navy.

When you want to add colour to an outfit, turn to accessories! That's my go-to rule, so I added this cheerful yellow statement necklace and my mustard Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan bag. While the yellows don't match, I felt they were just what this outfit needed.

Very pleased to report that unlike last year's over-ambitious cake, I wasn't up until the early hours of the morning finishing decorating this cake. My son was still just as impressed with it though which I'm happy about. (If you missed it, I've shared my party outfit here already).

Last worn: navy drape cardigan, Aztec print tiered dress, black ankle boots, Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan bag.

Other ways to wearnavy drape cardigan worn two ways, Aztec print tiered dress and kimono, black ankle boots and pencil skirt, Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan bag worn 30 ways.

JacketJeanswest Alice longline Australian wool cardigan
ScarfLouis Vuitton monogram shawl in bleu
Dress: Kmart Tropicana sleeveless tiered maxi dress
ShoesAsos leather Chelsea boots in tan
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey

Why I wore it:

Every time I wear this dress it makes me smile, but I felt it had been a long time between wears so I decided to give it another wear, even if we didn't have a particularly busy or exciting day. Nothing wrong with putting on a pretty dress just to run errands in! Plus the colourful and cheerful colours work well to keep you calm and prevent you becoming frazzled running errands with two little boys!

It's not the first time I've worn this dress with a grey cardigan and a colourful scarf. That previous outfit definitely inspired this recent one. The one big difference being that I made sure to pick a not as windy winter day when I wore this so that I didn't feel the cold coming in through the crochet border around the tiers of the dress.

I actually found this outfit a little warm in the middle of the day - this Louis Vuitton shawl is so cosy and while there's nothing in the print of the dress that matches this beautiful cobalt blue I thought it worked nicely with the coral. With all of the colour, the neutral grey Rebecca Minkoff Love bag seemed like a good accessory choice.

Dresses and Leather Jackets With Scarves and Balenciaga Day Bags

I'm always excited to get my leather jackets out. They are the perfect pieces to keep me warm in our Brisbane winters, and they look great with everything. I wore them recently with dresses to the office. I get to work early so the extra warmth from a leather jacket is appreciated in the cold winter commute. I did swap the jackets for a cosy cardigan when I got to my desk though.

What I wore:

cobalt leather jacket, embroidered feather scarf, ikat print belted dress, winter office outfit | awayfromblue

Balenciaga truffle brown RH classic day bag | awayfromtheblue

awayfromblue instagram tan hobo bag belted ikat print dress cobalt jacket winter outfit
JacketWittner 'Santa Fe' cobalt blue leather jacket
Scarf: grey and gold embroidered feather scarf
DressJeanswest Aztec print dress
BeltRebecca Minkoff Liv double wrap velvet belt
ShoesWalnut Melbourne 'Ava' black lizard ballet flats (also available in silver)
BagBalenciaga truffle brown RH classic day bag

Why I wore it:

While this dress only gets worn to the office, it is one of my favourite dresses. I love the colour and print, and it was definitely overdue a wear. I knew the cobalt of the leather jacket would go so nicely with the navy on the dress, but I was undecided about the scarf. I set aside a few to try in the morning and see which looked best, but as soon as I put this one on I knew I wasn't going to have to try any others - the grey scarf with gold embroidered feathers works so well with this printed dress!

There was nothing I'd change about this outfit - I did think of ankle boots in the morning but the ballet flats were fine. My legs were kept warm with my fleece lined tights, another winter must-have for me!

Why I wore it:

While I liked this outfit, I didn't like it as much as the one above. I thought that the blue bag and scarf would look nice with this faux wrap dress. The dress is such a fun mix of colours, but I do wear blue with it frequently. Even this black moto jacket has a little bit of blue print on the sleeves, as you can see in the close up shot of the bag.

With the dress being such a bold and colourful print, again I was unsure what scarf to go with it. I decided on this blue monogram shawl. While it does have a monogram print on it, like the leather jacket it's so subtle I think it worked really nicely with this dress.

Might not have been my favourite outfit, but it was still nice for a busy meeting filled day at the office. I just loved the first outfit more!

Faux Leather Jackets Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

Just because you're heading into the office, it doesn't mean you have to leave your leather jacket behind. A tougher moto jacket works well with a feminine dress and keeps you cosy for the commute. It's so easy to throw your jacket over your chair when you get to your desk, and swap it for a cosy cardigan if the office aircon is a little chilly, or a blazer if you want to look more formal.

Embroidered Tops In the Office With Balenciaga Bags

After a rough week of feeling unwell and working from home, I felt well enough to return to the office. I decided to wear some of my embroidered pieces to boost my mood. I love embroidery, but it's been a while since I wore these tops so it was definitely overdue.

What I wore:

ScarfLouis Vuitton monogram shawl in bleu
BlouseJeanswest Elise longline embroidered shirt in coconut blue
PantsJeanswest 'Fiona' skinny leg pant in shiraz
Shoes: Asos leather Chelsea boots in tan
BagBalenciaga part time in black 2010 with SGH

Why I wore it:

Unfortunately, despite having regained most of my voice the day before, constantly greeting people in the office and explaining that I had almost lost my voice resulted in me pretty much losing my voice  again before lunch time! While meetings were difficult, they weren't impossible. I felt able to follow along mentally even if I couldn't contribute much to the discussions. There was a lot of pointing and gesturing at screens. Thank goodness for being able to use messaging apps to communicate with my colleagues in other offices rather than picking up the phone!

Lack of voice aside, I wanted to bundle up warmly as it was predicted to be one of the coldest winter days, with single digit temperatures. I'm from Brisbane, 8 degrees Celsius is freezing to us! I picked my cosiest scarf, this Louis Vuitton monogram shawl. The night before as I'd planned my outfits I'd tied it so it was more like a snood / infinity scarf. As I shared on Instagram though, it wasn't as easy to replicate on a cold and dark morning. I didn't realise it looked quite so messy until I saw the pics. Oh well, it definitely kept me warm.

Probably could have picked a warmer jacket over this blazer, and maybe not rolled my pants up to expose my ankles on such a cold day. I did love this outfit otherwise though, it was perfect for the day at work, just not so much for a nearly freezing commute!

Last worn: cream blazer, embroidered blouse, Louis Vuitton monogram shawl, burgundy pants, Chelsea leather ankle boots, Balenciaga Part Time bag.

My Complete Balenciaga Collection (updated for 2018!)

What I wore:

Jacket: Barkins beige trench coat
ScarfNali feather print pashmina scarf
Top: Target embroidered khaki tank
SkirtJeanswest black ponte pencil skirt
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagBalenciaga truffle brown RH classic day bag

Why I wore it:

Thought I'd wear this embroidered peasant tank to the office, as I was surprised to realise I'd never done that yet. I love this and wore it a lot while breastfeeding. It's a long flowy tunic length, perfect for lifting up slightly to feed baby but keeping your stomach covered still. It worked well in the office too! I can't believe this is the first time I've worn this top this year, it's a favourite and has been neglected too long.

While I didn't wear the trench coat in the office and swapped to a cardigan, I did enjoy all the brown tones in this outfit when I wore the trench. The scarf looks a bit crumpled from being in storage and I briefly considered ironing it, but just wore it anyway. Creases happen!

Just like the day above, my voice was better in the morning and almost non existent by the end of the day. While the day started off great with a cup of free chocolates and then lunch being provided at the office, my voice and I were exhausted by mid afternoon. I had a late meeting right before I left and my colleague was sliding me throat lozenges across the desk when she heard me trying to speak on the call! 😂

Winter Office Wear: Louis Vuitton Bleu Monogram Shawl With Pencil Skirts And Blazers

You may remember I got a beautiful LV Christmas gift, a classic monogram shawl I'd wanted for years. I had to wait until now and winter to wear it, but as soon as scarf weather arrived I was thrilled to take it out for a spin! It's coldest during my commutes to and from work as it's outside the heat of the day, so the cosy scarf kept me suitably warm.

What I wore:

Skirt: Cotton On 'Mica' mesh spot skirt in dusty pink
ShoesWalnut Melbourne 'Ava' black lizard ballet flats (also available in silver)
BagBalenciaga part time in black 2010 with SGH

Why I wore it:

I wasn't too sure about how this outfit would all work together. I really wanted to try the navy peasant top with the pink pencil skirt, but I wasn't sure if the blue scarf would work with the navy. I'm so pleased I gave this a go though, the different shades of blue look great together.

As an added bonus, the scarf helped hide the makeup spill I had on my top in the morning - I did try wash it off but makeup is stubborn and I didn't have a lot of time, so I appreciated being able to wrap up a bit and hide the evidence of me rishing about in the morning and being my usual clumsy self! The only downside is that it does cover the top up quite a bit in the outfit and makes it a little hard to see, but it's this one I recently bought from Jeanswest in one of their sales.

Ended up having lunch with hubby in the city. I got a call on my way to lunch saying he'd been another office and was near my building so we had lunch together. Was a nice change to catch up without the kids in tow!

Why I wore it:

Just like the outfit above, I'd been wanting to wear this top and skirt combination together. I recently unboxed all my winter things, this long sleeve teal henley is one of them. I thought the colour combination with the blue skirt was nice, but I did worry the top was a bit casual for the office. The blazer helped to dress is up a little, and I've mentioned previously how I really like this cream jersey blazer with the lace skirt, as they have similar colours.

The cream blazer, tan flats and black Balenciaga bag were nice neutral options to wear with all of the colour in my outfit. I've only recently started wearing green and blue together, and I loved the different shades of blue with the teal, from the lace pencil skirt and the blue monogram shawl. Once again, this scarf kept me cosy on the early morning commute. It's part wool, so perfect for wrapping up in on a cold winter morning. I might even have to get my tights out next!

How You Can Wear It:

You don't have to stick with a neutral colour pallette when putting together a work outfit. It's easy to wear a colourful pencil skirt and top together, and still perfect for a business causal office. A scarf, as well as being a winter essential, is another nice way to add some colour to your layers and is easily removed when you get to your desk, so you can be a litle more adventurous with a bold colour or print.
