Foil Print Tees, Waterfall Cardigans, Skinny Jeans and Mini MAC

Feeling a little uninspired with my winter wardrobe, I decided to go through and pick out some of my favourite pieces, these foil print tees, and build outfits around them. With cosy scarves and cardigans, as I wore them a few weeks ago when winter was in full swing in Brisbane.

What I wore:

JeansNobody Denim Siren skinny super high-rise jeans in power black denim (C/O)
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagRebecca Minkoff mini MAC in aquamarine with python embossed leather

Why I wore it:

I kind of threw this outfit together, thinking that I liked navy and red together, I love the little aqua mini MAC bag with the red cardigan, and the gold embroidered feathers on the scarf tied in with the foil polka dots. Reviewing the photos I'm not 100% happy with it, I think having something more than just the embroidery on the scarf and foil on the tee matching would have looked better. And maybe tucking the tee into the jeans!

Just one of those outfits where you love all the pieces individually but you're not too sure they all work together in one outfit!

This was a comfortable outfit though, and quite quick to pull together as I was in a rush to get the boys out the house. Still at that point where we try to do things in the morning and get home in time for naptime!

Why I wore it:

Followed a similar outfit formula to the one above, with a waterfall drape cardigan, skinny jeans and a foil print tee. I liked this outfit much more though - perhaps because of how much I love blue and purple together. I liked the outfit so much that when I spilled a little something on it while rushing out the door and it wouldn't brush off with just water I just rearranged the scarf to hide it, ha!

This taupe skull scarf isn't just a good stain hider, it's also a nice neutral with the colourful navy cardigan, purple jeans and aquamarine mini MAC bag.

We got to playgroup to discover that it was a messy play day - it had completely slipped my mind and so I cringed every time one of the boys covered my outfit in something else sticky. They had a blast though, and true to the lovely organiser's words, all of the food colouring and flour and stains washed out of our clothes after. Even that stain I'd spilled on my tee before we left the house!

Maxi Skirts In Winter With Grey Knits and Blanket Scarves | Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC and MAB Tote

I love a maxi skirt, and I try to wear the majority of the ones I have year-round. They are much too pretty to be left hanging in the wardrobe all winter! I followed the same simple outfit formula to wear these two blue maxi skirts: with grey jumpers, colourful scarves and mini Rebecca Minkoff bags.

What I wore:

Why I wore it:

This was back in the winter school holidays, on quite a nice day. My mum and I had planned to take the boys out shopping to spend some of the $5 challenge money I'd saved. (You save every $5 note you get as change then every year or 6 months you look back and see what you've managed to save). We made a last minute change of plans and took the boys out for the day to the Ipswich Rail museum, where they have a 'Day Out With Thomas'. I've posted about it before. The boys love it, and the reaction when they discovered where we were going was so cute. I wish I'd recorded it.

I did think about taking a jacket, as the sleeves on this grey knit are only 3/4 length, but as we were in the museum most of the day I really didn't need it so I was glad I didn't take one.

It's not the first time I've layered up this chambray maxi skirt for winter. While the chambray is light enough for summer, it works nicely in winter too with cosier layers on top like this grey knit and the big scarf.

Why I wore it:

Once again, repeating the outfit formula I loved and trying it again with different pieces to make another outfit. This time did go shopping, we headed to Ikea with the boys. It was a productive trip. As usual, you come out of Ikea with more than you planned, but I got some nice wardrobe inspiration, the boys got some toys, I picked up a little kids table for them, and their lunch was free because it was school holidays 'kids eat free'.

This skirt hasn't been worn in winter before, it has slits up the side so it's not the best choice for a cold day. With the warm grey knit, cosy blanket scarf and ankle boots, I thought it would be okay for a day mostly in the car and indoors at Ikea. While it was a little chilly in the morning, I did like this outfit. It was comfortable for walking around all day, and I liked the touch of colour with the purple scarf and mini MAB tote bag.

Grey Knits Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

Maxi skirts can easily be layered up for winter, just by adding cosy layers. A neutral knit, a big blanket scarf and ankle boots work on a warmer winter day. You can add a jacket and maybe tights or leggings underneath if you have to face cooler temperatures, but the outfits above are perfect for Brisbane winters.

Colourful Winter Outfits: Navy Dresses and Pink Skull Scarves

Sometimes on my work from home days I like to throw on a dress. It's a quick outfit to pull together to get the boys out the on time door for daycare drop off, and it's comfortable for sitting all day at home working.

I stuck to my usual easy dress outfit formula for two recent work from home days, and added in some colourful cardigans and Alexander McQueen skull scarves. Even though it's winter, it's nice to wear a bit of colour.

What I wore:

navy stripe tee dress in colourful winter outfit with pink scarf, mustard cardigan and rebecca minkoff micro regan bag | awayfromblue

Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold | awayfromtheblue

awayfromblue instagram pink navy and mustard yellow striped tee dress work from home outfit winter
Jacket: thrifted SES Fashions mustard yellow cardigan
ScarfAlexander McQueen pink pashmina in skull and floral print
DressAtmos&Here navy stripe tee dress
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagRebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold

Why I wore it:

Every time I wear this dress I seem to notice it's been a long time between wears! With the thick fabric and longer sleeves, it's usually packed away with my winter things which doesn't give me many opportunities in the year to wear it. It's such a comfortable tee dress though, with a slightly longer hem in the back so that I feel comfortable sitting on the floor with the boys when I'm wearing it.

You might have seen I've just posted blue and yellow outfits, and I'm wearing the colour combination again! I like yellow and blue together, and really like this mustard cardigan with the navy striped dress. Of course with the yellow cardigan, it made sense to pick out this Alexander McQueen skull scarf. It's yellow skulls on a pink background so a nice combination with this outfit. The mustard yellow Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan bag was another further bit of matchy-matchy.

The only thing I didn't like about this outfit was the tights. Having no luck finding fleece lined leggings, I tried a pair of these footless tights - you can see the little slivers of exposed ankle. They got some pulls in them on this first wear. With the boys in daycare while I worked it wasn't like I spent a long day with the kids being rough and tumble - I'm sad that they didn't have the quality behind them (and that I didn't keep the receipt!). Otherwise, this was such a great outfit.

Rebecca Minkoff Micro Regan and Mini MAC Comparison:

Dress: Zara printed bib front tunic dress
ShoesAsos Cleo leather boots in tan
BagRebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC

Why I wore it:

Unlike the outfit above, I wasn't quite as pleased with this outfit. It seemed like a great idea, a navy shift dress layered up with fleece lined tights and tall boots to keep me cosy, with a purple cardigan and pink scarf for some extra colour, topped off with the neutral silver Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC bag.

As I mentioned on Instagram, I think the white print on the dress and the mostly cream scarf didn't go that well together. I really like pink and blue together, but I think the first outfit works better as the scarf is more of a block colour. With the cream background and the hot pink skulls on this scarf, it doesn't sit as nicely with the print of the dress. Still a great colour combination and scarf, and just maybe not the right piece with this outfit.

The cardigan also was not as thick as I needed on such a cold day. The dress is long sleeved, but it's a thin viscose material and a thin cardigan on top wasn't as warm as I needed for a colder than expected winter day. Luckily I spent most of it working from home, but having to do the daycare runs and taking my son to his specialist appointment in the afternoon made me wish I'd worn something a bit warmer.

Skull Scarves Under $50:

They might not be Alexander McQueen, but they are still as fun to wear!

How You Can Wear It:

It's easy to add colour to a winter outfit with bright cardigans and fun scarves. A cheerful scarf with more than one colour in the print (like the pink and yellow skull scarf in the first outfit) makes it easy to pick other pieces like a cardigan that coordinates with it. Or you can go all out and pick different complementary colours like I did in the second outfit. Sticking with a neutral outfit base like a navy dress makes adding colourful accessories even simpler.

Printed Jeans and Basic Tees | Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC and Micro Regan

Jeans are a frequently worn option in winter for me. I do try mix things up a little in my effort to stay away from blue jeans. I have a few colourful pairs, and some really fun printed pairs. I'm wearing two printed jeans below, in a monochromatic outfit and a second more colourful one. Although I'm wearing different prints and colours, I kept to a simple outfit formula in both outfits with basic tees and cosy cardigans.

What I wore:

SAHM style: monochrome printed jeans outfit with space dye tee pop of colour micro regan bag | away from blue

Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold on wrist | awayfromtheblue

Necklace: Kmart Gold and Navy beaded necklace
Tee: thrifted Mix Apparel black marle tee
JeansSass & Bide Playman skinny jeans
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs silver tuxedo flats
BagRebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold

Why I wore it:

No scarf as this was a rather warm winter day! In fact, when we came out of ABA mother's group and we went to grab some groceries, I took the cardigan off as it was a really warm winter afternoon. It was nice to enjoy the sunshine briefly.

I thrifted this tee a while back to replace a plain black v-neck one that I'd destroyed in the wash, and realised this hadn't been worn in a while. With the space dye print being similar to the lines on the chevron print of these jeans, I thought they would look quite nice together. I was worried the print mix was a little bold, definitely bolder than I expected when I put it on, so to keep things simple I added a plain black cardigan over the top. I'd planned to add my mustard cardigan, to match my mustard Rebecca Minkoff Micro Regan bag, but I think the black worked perfectly. It let my little bag be the touch of colour with the outfit.

I felt the silver shoes tied in nicely with the monochrome outfit, even if the necklace was gold and the bag was mustard. Really liked how well the printed jeans handled messy food covered toddler hands at the ABA mothers group too, ha! Prints are so good for disguising finger marks!

Why I wore it:

Another day with the boys, another chance to use the same outfit formula with another pair of printed jeans. I was surprised to realise I hadn't worn this blue marle tee with the pink leopard print jeans before, I really like blue and pink together! As the outfit felt a bit bold, I thought a neutral grey cardigan would be the best layer to add. Kept me cosy too, as this is wool.

With the neutral white Converse shoes as well it was looking like a good outfit, but I decided to go even bolder with the hot pink mini MAC bag. While an even brighter shade of pink than on the leopard print jeans, it really popped and just made the outfit for me. I tried doubling the strap over a little to make it a little shorter. I do that frequently with my Rebecca Minkoff Love bag. This mini MAC is not as structured though, and the soft leather pulled a big, as you can see in the close up shot. I don't think I'll try that again!

Again, a slightly warmer day so I went without a scarf. We spent most of our time indoors too, running a couple errands and taking the boys to rhyme time at the library.

How You Can Wear It:

Printed jeans are easy to pair with basic tees, and neutral cardigans if the weather is cooler. You don't have to stick to neturals though! While the first monochrome outfit works, the second outfit follows the same formula but with more colourful pieces. Don't be afraid to add more colour to a printed piece.  You can stick with a colour combination you already love to make it easy.

Floral Swing Dresses In Winter With Cardigans and Ankle Boots

Just as I try to wear most of my wardrobe year-round, I don't reserve prints for a particular season. While florals are great to wear in spring and summer, they are so easy to layer up for winter too, as I've done here with these light floral dresses.

What I wore:

ScarfLouis Vuitton monogram shawl in bleu
DressZaful floral print ruffle hem dress in ginger
ShoesAsos leather Chelsea boots in tan
BagRebecca Minkoff Regan Satchel Tote in moon

Why I wore it:

I didn't set out to wear this dress without a jacket. I'd planned to put a cardigan over the top, but quickly realised that the tight sleeves over the statement bell sleeves on this dress weren't going to work! I rushed out the door in the morning anyway as I had to drop the boys off at daycare and it wasn't too cold. When the rain set in later in the afternoon and I had to go to the dentist though I spent a few minutes hunting in my wardrobe and decided on a leather jacket, the thicker material hiding any bunching up of the sleeve. Next time I wear this dress I'll definitely have to wear it with a leather jacket!

This scarf helped keep me cosy too - with it being a wool blend it's so snuggly and warm to wear. I liked the bold blue against the mustard of the dress too, a great colour combination.

The red lip was me trying a Charlotte Tilbury lip tint I won in a giveaway a while back. A very bold red, I made the mistake of wearing it without makeup and think I really need makeup so my face doesn't look as deathly pale with it, ha!

While it wasn't a particularly exciting day, working from home with the daycare drop off / pick up and a dentist appointment, sometimes it's nice just to throw on a pretty dress anyway, and it's been a while since I last wore this one.

Rebecca Minkoff Canvas Vs Leather Mini MAC

What I wore:

JacketJeanswest waterfall drape cardigan in scarlett marle
DressShein navy flower print flowy dress (C/O)
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagRebecca Minkoff striped coated canvas mini MAC in berry stripe

Why I wore it:

Unlike the first outfit, I didn't love this one as much! We had a relative over from Western Australia, and it's been so long since we last saw each other I'm not actually sure when we saw each other last! Now both grown up with kids, it was fun for the kids to get together and we headed into the city. I wanted to wear something pretty for our outing to seem a little dressed up so I decided on this floral dress, and thought the red cardigan would work nicely with it. I realised as I was about to rush out the door that while the colour combo looked nice, the shapes together didn't. I should have thrown a belt over this, but didn't have time so I wore it anyway.

Not my worst outfit, but definitely not my favourite. After walking around some markets in the city, we went to the Winter Wonderland ice rink in King George Square. They had a snow tubing slide set up where you could slide down some 'snow' (really more like ice!) of course all the kids wanted to do it, even Baby Boy. I ended up having to go with him as he was too little to go himself. 4 year old T was fearless and was happy to slide down himself with his new friend (as long as I dragged his snow tube up the stairs....!) and Baby Boy and I had to wiggle into one tube. Not a problem, just a little difficult to do in a dress, especially getting out the tube at the bottom of the hill with everyone watching!

45 minutes into the hour long session I had to admit defeat and I traded my ticket with hubby who took the little one up and down the hill.

After a very delicious lunch at the Pancake manor we said our goodbyes and headed home, where the boys had massive naps!

Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC With Skinny Jeans, Kimonos and Bright Tanks

I've been wearing my kimonos with jeans a lot lately. Kimonos and denim is a go-to outfit for me over summer, and I wanted to embrace winter with my jeans but still enjoy my kimonos for a little longer. I wore them with bright tanks because even though it's winter here in Brisbane it's still fun to add some colour to your outfit.

What I wore:

Why I wore it:

Florals aren't just for spring! Wearing them to welcome the first day of winter with this cosy kimono. The navy kimono and mustard tank aren't a new combination, I wore it before here in summer, but it's a combination I love so much I was eager to wear again! This time with jeans instead of shorts, as it is still winter.

Had a busy day, with daycare drop off and pick up, working from home and baby boy's specialist appointment in the afternoon, so I wanted something easy and comfortable. By picking classic black jeans that go with everything and a top and kimono I've worn together before, I knew this outfit would work. Anything that makes getting dressed in the morning quicker and easier is good as a mum!

It was a chilly morning, but the warmer cotton of this kimono and the cocoon style enveloping my arms made this perfect for tackling the chill.

Why I wore it:

Unlike the kimono above, this kimono wasn't as cosy. I did regret it a little in the morning as we had an early start, with some errands before our ABA mother's group, and it took awhile for the weather to warm up. I wore this in the first week of winter though, when I wasn't quite ready to retire my kimonos for the season!

The ankle boots were an effort to make me feel warmer, but really they just annoyed me. I forgot that the zips on the hems of these Jeanswest skinny jeans make them difficult to wear with ankle boots, they just aren't a comfortable combo.

Despite these minor annoyances, I did like this outfit. I love blue and pink together, and this was a fun way to wear the combination, even if this kimono will be set aside to wait for warmer weather!
