Soft Knits And Maxi Skirts In Winter With Cross Body Bags

I love layering up my maxi skirts a little more for winter! A cosy comfy knit it a great pairing with a maxi skirt, for maximum comfort and extra warmth on a winter day.

Knit: SES fashions mustard marle knit jumper
SkirtNoisy May long denim maxi skirt
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
Bag: Amerii medium sling rattan bag in black (c/o)

Why I wore it:

It was a really cold and windy day when I wore this - as you can see from my outfit being blown around a bit! It was so hard to get a pic without my scarf or hair over my face! I wasn't wearing leggings under this maxi skirt but I kind of wished I had - one of Brisbane's really cold winter mornings - the temps were down in single digits!

Our plan for the day was to go to the playground but the wind and the freezing temperatures made that a very unattractive option! Instead we just headed out on a couple of errands inside the nearest shopping centre to stay warm and get outside the house for a bit.

Why I wore it:

In contrast to the day above, this was a much warmer day! No need for the extra leather jacket or scarf, and I wasn't wishing I'd worn leggings under my maxi skirt. Although I was wearing taller boots under it so my legs were pretty cosy!

Just a quiet Sunday, with church in the morning and then Church Online in the afternoon. I really like blue and red together, and I've worn this red skirt with other blue tops in the past.

It's the first time I've tried the red bag and maxi skirt together though, it was a nice bit of matchy-matchy. Since the red micro Avery bag has gold hardware, I wore my navy and gold beaded necklace and navy and gold tassel earrings. I really liked this outfit, so nice and colourful and very comfortable!

How You Can Wear It:

A maxi skirt can be worn in cooler weather and isn't just a summer piece! I've been enjoying wearing my maxi skirts over winter. Adding a nice soft cosy knit is a great way to winterise a maxi skirt, adding a few more layers like a scarf and leather jacket for really cold days!

Printed Dresses With Boots and Rebecca Minkoff Cupid Bag

Getting my printed dresses out again for winter. While both these dresses have long sleeves, leggings and boots were a definite must have as they are quite light. I also had a slip on under each dress for extra warmth, and of course a jacket on top to keep warm.

What I wore:

thrifted Rebecca Minkoff vintage Cupid satchel in dark navy blue

Jacket: Jeanswest navy suede moto zip jacket
Dress: Jeanswest 'Chelsea' printed dress
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
Bagthrifted Rebecca Minkoff vintage Cupid satchel in dark navy blue

Why I wore it:

This navy suede jacket I got for Christmas I thought would be a lovely pairing with this navy tile print dress, but the jacket looks almost black here. It certainly kept me cosy in the cold morning though! I wore this for the school run and a quick errand, before working from home and picking up the kids again in the afternoon.

With the dark navy Rebecca Minkoff Cupid bag, and the black ankle boots too, this felt like a really dark outfit, even with the white on the print of the dress. Good for this overcast winter day in Brisbane!

DressZaful floral print ruffle hem dress in ginger
ShoesAsos Cleo leather boots in tan
Bracelets: the usual plus Mimco gunmetal twisted bracelet stack
Bagthrifted Rebecca Minkoff vintage Cupid satchel in dark navy blue

Why I wore it:

Unlike the outfit above, this is a lot more colourful! This dress hasn't been worn in a while so was definitely due a repeat wear, and I really like it with leggings underneath. I had to double up the sleeves a bit of get this denim jacket on top - the dress has long statement sleeves, that is sadly hidden by the jacket, but I needed the extra warmth from the jacket, especially on the cold morning.

With the comfortable and cosy tall leather boots as well, this was a great outfit for family fun day at church. The kids had a blast enjoying all the yummy food, playing games, and bouncing around on the jumping castle after the service. It was very difficult to pull them away to head home!

The Rebecca Minkoff Cupid bag, that I still haven't stopped using and loving since I thrifted it, was perfect for storing all my essentials plus our water bottles for the day.

June Dress Week Style Challenge - Summer Dresses in Winter With Leather Jackets, Skull Scarves and Boots

Sharing more of my June Dress Week Style challenge outfits, this time for #JuneDressWeek2. I'm doing this challenge with my blog buddy Kiki from According to Kiki. You can follow along with us on instagram @kikimincks and @awayfromblue, or through our blogs. I'm posting a little more closely to the actual days with this one, as I went ahead and did the second challenge right after the first so I was a week ahead!

First, the Shopbop sale has just gotten even better! Get an extra 25% off sale items with the code '25MORE' for the next 3 days only! I keep the Sales and Discounts page updated regularly, but this sale is so good I had to include it in a post too. Perfect time to buy all those items you had added to your cart waiting for a justification to buy. Or is that just me? ;)

What I wore:

JacketWittner 'Santa Fe' cobalt blue leather jacket
ScarfAlexander McQueen modal and cashmere skull scarf
Dress: Zara printed bib front tunic dress
ShoesAsos Cleo leather boots in tan
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

The challenge was 'oldie but fave', and this was Kiki's take on it. This dress is only 3 years old (I bought it on a trip to Sydney), so it's certainly not the oldest dress I own. It's definitely one of my favourites though! I was actually surprised to see that I hadn't worn this dress with these tall boots before, in all the (15) times I've worn it. It's one of those pieces that is perfect in summer or layered up in winter, a great all-rounder and I'm so pleased I bought it all those years ago.

This is probably one of my shortest lived outfits that has ever been on the blog though, despite how much I liked it. As usual, after a busy morning everyone was fed, clothed and ready to go out the door. I stopped to take photos and then after putting the tripod away I turned to baby T to go put him in his car seat....and he vomited! My first instinct was to scoop him up and cuddle him, which didn't work out nicely for my outfit as he wasn't quite finished!
I had been debating wearing this jacket that morning, as it is one of my most expensive items of clothing (more expensive than some of my hand bags!). Lydia left a comment last time I wore the jacket suggesting it would look nice with this dress, so I was eager to try the combination. I foolishly decided that as it was only a short morning out, going to the library and then playgroup, my jacket would be okay. I had wanted to give it its first wearing in a while, after not wearing it a lot last year when baby T was still a newborn as I was worried about him spitting up on it!

Had to text my friends to tell them we wouldn't be seeing them, and I spent the rest of the day at home with a sick baby after getting us changed out of our messed up clothes. My outfits for looking after a sick baby are never blog-worthy, and they never tend to stay clean for long!

I might wear this exact outfit again another day as I didn't get a chance to wear it for long and I really liked it. I wonder if this disappointment is what people who have 'professional' fashion blogs feel, getting all dressed up in something you like and it only lasts for a few camera clicks? I prefer actually wearing my clothes, and enjoying them!

ScarfAlexander McQueen pink pashmina in skull and floral print
DressEzra chambray shift dress
ShoesAsos Aggie leather western ankle boots in black
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

This chambray challenge was the hardest one for Kiki and I! We spoke about it quite a few times, as we were unsure how to pull it off. I was a step ahead of Kiki as I already owned a chambray dress, but I have never been to sure about how to style it for cooler weather! A chambray dress is also the Style It Project challenge for June, so I got a few ideas about how to make my chambray dress work for winter from Kimba's blog.

My first thought was to try leggings and ankle boots with this, as that was the outfit idea I liked the most, but I don't have any full-length leggings. With the darker denim panel at the hem of the dress and the leggings cutting off above the ankle boots...it was not a flattering look. So I wore exactly the same thing, but with tights instead. I think it looks nice this way. It does make me wonder why I keep holding onto this dress though as I always find it hard to wear. I'm not letting go of it just yet, will wait until spring comes around again and see how I feel about it then before I decide. It is easier to wear in the warmer weather.

Navy and Burgundy: Dresses In Winter With Tights and Boots

After trying and loving navy and burgundy together a while back, I was looking forward to wearing the colour combination again. I stuck with a brown bag this time too, using my Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere instead of my Chloe Paddington bag. The cold weather gave me a chance to wear and enjoy this Jeanswest Mac at last, after buying it for less than $20 in the Cyber Monday sales last year and setting it aside for winter.

What I wore:

ScarfForever New Skye Foil Feather scarf in berry / gold (on sale!)
DressJeanswest Rachel Lyocell chambray dress (C/O)
ShoesAsos Cleo leather boots in tan
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

While I usually have the 'have to wear it twice in the month after buying it' rule for all new purchases, this jacket is one of the exceptions (along with a dress I outgrew too quickly in pregnancy). With over $120 off, I couldn't resist buying it, knowing it would come in handy for winter as I was selling my old black trench.

Winter weather did take a while to arrive in Brisbane so I waited longer to wear this coat than I expected, but I'm still glad I bought it last year and to be able to wear and enjoy it now, it kept me perfectly cosy.

It was a great topper for my sleeveless chambray dress and the navy is perfect with the burgundy feather print scarf. The style challenge for the day was 'layer player' which worked out perfectly weath-wise as it was a cold and rainy day in Brisbane. We had Baby Boy's weekly weigh in the morning then spent some time with my mum and sister in the afternoon.

Last worn: maroon feather foil scarf, chambray dress, ASOS Cleo boots, Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandouliere. First time I've worn the jacket although it was purchased last year.

Other ways to wearfeather print scarf with stripes, chambray dress in spring, ASOS Cleo boots and skinny jeans, Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandouliere and shorts.

Perfect for pregnancy: chambray dress in second trimester, speedy bandouliere and maternity wrap dress.

Why I wore it:

No style challenge for this one, but another excuse to wear navy and burgundy together again. Since I liked the dress and boots combo above with the navy jacket, I wore it again with black ankle boots and my burgundy jersey dress. It was a pretty quiet day with just a few errands to run, but I did wish I'd added a scarf to this as it was a little chilly in the morning.

This burgundy dress hasn't been worn in awhile - one of those pieces I had boxed away as it's not breastfeeding friendly. Worked well in pregnancy though!

As it's the second time I've worn this jacket and I try to review everything I buy after I've worn it twice, my purchase review:

I like this jacket. I love the colour, it's cosy for winter, and will be perfect for the early morning commutes to the office. The only thing I don't like is how the lapels kinda stick up a bit - but I'm sure that will settle down with more wear. It looks really nice belted (came with a belt) but I haven't been able to wear it that way and still show what I'm wearing underneath it!

Last worn: Jeanswest Mac jacket (above), jersey dress, ankle boots, speedy Bandouliere (above).

Perfect for pregnancy: jersey dress and leggings in third trimesterspeedy bandouliere and maternity pencil skirt.

How You Can Wear It:

Navy and burgundy look beautiful together, but you could apply this style tip to any colour combination you enjoy. Look at the pieces you have in your wardrobe that will allow you to wear the colours year round. First time I wore navy and burgundy it was with a tank, kimono and pants in autumn. It was easy to wear the same colour combination again in winter with season-appropriate pieces.

While both of these dress and boots outfits include the same navy jacket, by changing the other pieces and sticking to the same colour scheme I've created two outfits that look different while wearing a familiar combination. Thinking of different ways to wear a colour combination you love is a good way to come up with new outfit ideas in your wardrobe, without having to buy anything new.

Knotted Knits Over Maxi Dresses With Rebecca Minkoff Love Bag

My previous post was all about wearing cosy knits with maxi skirts, today I'm showing you how I wear knits and maxi dresses together. Using a petite style hack when a top is too long for my shorter frame - just tie a knot in it! It works well with a soft knit and a maxi dress when otherwise the knit would be too long to hit at a flattering length.

What I wore:

Necklace: blush pink and gold beaded tassel necklace
Jumper: thrifted Valleygirl blue knit jumper
DressJeanswest Sophia high-low maxi dress
ShoesAtmos&Here tan Lola leather ankle boots
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey

Why I wore it:

This cobalt knit is one of my favourites to pull out every winter! Thrifted back in 2015, it's always so fun to wear, and I was even wearing it in my previous post too! With 13 wears so far it's doing pretty well! Much too thin for colder climates, it's perfect for Brisbane winter.

I like how the blue knit matches the blue in the print of the maxi dress! With bare legs and ankle boots, as I wore this out for a big family dinner at my parents and didn't have to be outside much - the high-low hem of the maxi dress kept my bare legs mostly covered and warm. The pink necklace doesn't match the shade of pink in the print exactly but seemed like a nice complimentary colour, and with the colourful dress, blue knit and pink necklace, the grey Rebecca Minkoff Love bag was a nice neutral choice.

Last worn: blue knit, pink tassel necklace, ruffle hem maxi dress, tan ankle boots, Rebecca Minkoff Love Bag.

What's In My Bag: Rebecca Minkoff Love Bag

Necklace: navy and silver circle pendant tassel necklace
Knit: thrifted Spirit grey marle jumper
Dress: Kmart Tropicana sleeveless tiered maxi dress
ShoesAsos Cleo leather boots in tan
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey

Why I wore it:

Again, wearing my Rebecca Minkoff Love bag as a neutral against a bright maxi dress with a knotted jumper, but this time I picked this grey marle knit. It's a tunic length on me, with an uneven hem, so there was a lot of fabric to tie up! I decided to tie it more in the centre, and make it more of a feature than how I tied the first knit off to the side.

Apart from one moment where this knit came unfurled just as we got to church, it stayed in place all day and I quite liked this different way of wearing it. I'm guessing I'll be wearing knits over spaghetti strap maxi dresses like this more next winter too!

Marle Knits Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

A pretty spaghetti strip maxi dress can easily be worn in cooler weather with a cosy knit on top! If you're petite or want to add some extra definition to the outfit, you can knot the knit at your waist. Experiment with different knots depending on the jumper - you can create different looks with different knots and knot placement.

2 Ways to Add Colourful Accessories to Dresses in Winter

When I have a rare child-free day to myself I like to wear a dress. While I've worn dresses in the past with the boys, they aren't always a practical choice when chasing after two toddlers. It was good to have a reason to get these dresses out again. It's been a long time (almost 2 years!) since I've worn both of them as they aren't breastfeeding friendly.

Winter weather doesn't put me off of wearing dresses - fleece lined tights, ankle boots and a cosy cardigan or leather jacket keep me warm. While winter outfits can look a little monochromatic with all the neutral layers together, I've added a different colourful accessory to each outfit.

What I wore:

ScarfMarc by Marc Jacobs bright blue stole
DressAsos grey skater dress
ShoesRMK Chester black ankle boots
BagBalenciaga part time in black 2010 with SGH

Why I wore it:

I loved this outfit. The cobalt blue scarf was the perfect pop of colour with the monochrome outfit. Kept me warm on the cold morning too.

I had a physio appointment, and I find wearing a dress with leggings under it works best for all the exercises. (I just swapped the fleecy tights for leggings when I got there). I wasn't sure how I was going to meet the 'tied at waist' style challenge on Instagram and figured I could wear this dress with a belt. After almost 2 years since it was last worn, it was time to get it out my wardrobe! Changed my mind when I remembered I had this cosy cardigan with a belt, perfect for the challenge. It kept me warm as I rushed around between appointments while my mother in law stayed home with the boys.

I had to have a procedure at the dentist so was feeling a bit sore in the afternoon, it was nice to stay snuggled up in this cardigan.

Last worn: black belted cardigan, cobalt blue scarf, grey skater dress, black ankle boots, Balenciaga Part Time bag.

Other ways to wearblack belted cardigan and skinny jeans, cobalt blue scarf and stripes, grey skater dress in summer, black ankle boots and jeans, Balenciaga Part Time bag with pink tank.

Perfect for pregnancy: cardigan in first trimester, skater dress in second trimester, ankle boots for pregnancy reveal, part time bag and maternity pencil skirt.

What I wore:

NecklaceUniquely Made with Love Sea Change necklace
DressAtmos&Here navy stripe tee dress
ShoesAsos Cleo leather boots in tan
BagBalenciaga Day bag in 2005 magenta (20% off with code 'REAL')

Why I wore it:

Although I was feeling under the weather, I still had to get up and get dressed for an appointment so I pulled on one of my old favourite dresses. I wore this so much the year I got it, but pregnancies and breastfeeding has stopped it being worn recently. Like I mentioned on Instagram, I was so happy to unbox this when I got all my winter clothes out of storage.

Even though I wasn't feeling the best, I did love wearing this dress again. Always good to get old favourites out! The magenta Balenciaga day bag was a great cheerful and colourful pop against the navy and black too.

Last worn: printed leather jacket, striped tee dress, tan boots, Balenciaga magenta day bag.

Other ways to wearprinted leather jacket worn 30 ways, striped tee dress and Converse, tan boots and skinny jeans, Balenciaga magenta day bag and denim shorts.

Perfect for pregnancy: striped dress and small second trimester bump, magenta Balenciaga bag and maternity shorts.

More Pink Bags Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

You can add a little colour to a monochromatic outfit with a bright accessory. Winter is a good time to experiment with this - you can swap out any one of your neutral layers for a pop of colour. In the first outfit I added colour to a monochrome outfit with a bright cobalt scarf. In the second outfit, I was scarf-less but the bright magenta bag was the perfect pop against all of the black and navy.

Layer up your dresses and wear them all year! A cosy cardigan, scarf or leather jacket with boots and tights makes dresses work even in winter.

Cosy Cardigan, Skinny Jeans, Boots and a Printed Scarf: Winter SAHM Style Uniform

Since I got this striped wooly cardigan I've been wearing it a lot. While I like my leather jackets, a wash-and-wear option is better around baby. It's a nice piece to wear over jeans to keep me warm in winter. Thought I'd group these outfits together to post and show you two very similar ways to wear a cardigan. Lauren from Exploring My Style is so good at showing how you can wear the same outfit formula multiple times and yet make it look new each time!

This post has one outfit formula (same cardigan, a printed scarf, skinny jeans and boots) and two slightly different outfits.

What I wore:

Red accessories with neutral black grey outfit winter wool cardigan

Red Rebecca Minkoff mini quilted affair cross body bag with neutral outfit
Scarf: red and black skull print scarf
TeeMarc by Marc Jacobs blossom pocket tee in grey
JeansJeanswest prima denim super skinny jeans in absolute black
ShoesRMK Chester black ankle boots
BagRebecca Minkoff mini quilted affair bag in fire engine red (on sale in blue)

Why I wore it:

This was such a simple but cosy outfit. Black, grey and a little bit of red. Had to run some errands in the morning, and a trip to the doctors for a checkup for baby T in the afternoon. I went with red accessories as the grey tee has a little red floral design on the pocket, you can see it clearer another time I've worn it (with a big baby belly!). Everything gets covered up with layers in the winter!

As I mentioned in my review of the mini affair bag, I don't find this as easy to use as my mini MAC bags, but I'm trying to give it a chance and wear it a little more. I like the shape and the colour!

Last worn: striped cardiganred and black skull scarf, grey Marc Jacobs tee, skinny jeans, ankle bootsRebecca Minkoff mini affair bag.

Other ways to wear: cardigan with blue skinny jeansskull scarf with polka dots, grey tee for a day at the beach, black skinny jeans with a pink top, ankle boots with a maxi skirtred crossbody bag with blue and a maxi skirt.

ScarfStella McCartney heart print scarf
Jumper: Supre knit loose fit jumper in bahamas
JeansJeanswest blue skinny jeans
ShoesAsos Cleo leather boots in tan
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

This looks like overkill, but I assure you all those layers were needed! Single digit temperatures are my least favourite part of winter, and so when the 'Antarctic Vortex' hit I pulled together all my winter woolies to keep me cosy for a morning running errands with baby, followed by playgroup.

I was so thankful when we got to playgroup - they had the heater on warming up the room. While the toddlers did have fun playing with my scarf again, this time I didn't leave it behind!

Other ways to wear: striped cardi with a maxi skirt, heart print scarf with striped skirtpeach knit with leopard print, skinny jeans and a blazer, tan leather boots and a polka dot shift dress, LV Speedy bandouliere with dresses.
