30 Ways to Wear A Tie Dye Maxi Dress (#30wears Challenge)

If you look at all the 30 wears posts I've done so far you'll see a lot of maxis! I love my maxi skirts and dresses, and I definitely think you can still wear them if you're petite like me. I've already shared 30 ways to wear a pink maxi dress before, now it's another much-loved maxi dress, this beautiful jersey tie dye one from Jeanswest.

30 Ways To Wear: Grey Jersey Tie Dye Maxi Dress

30 ways to wear a grey jersey tie dye maxi dress #30wears challenge | away from the blue blog

Cost Per Wear

Unfortunately, this is another one of those pieces I can't calculate cost per wear on, as it was a present! With 30 wears and lots of life left in it though, I'm definitely getting value from it, so it was a great gift from my mum. I first wore it back in 2012, for Christmas day. Almost 6 years, 2 pregnancies and 30 wears later, it's still a firm favourite in my wardrobe.

30 Ways To Wear a Tie Dye Maxi Dress: Video Style

Jersey Maxi Dress Worn Knotted

petite hack for wearing a maxi dress knotting the hem worn 3 ways | awayfromblue

A go-to petite hack, if a maxi is too long, just knot it. You can secure over the knot with a hair tie to keep it in place too! As I've never had this dress shortened, wearing the elastic lower down where it should sit makes the dress too long, so tying a quick knot in it is an easy solution. It's a good way to make a maxi dress seem more casual, and it also works if you're at the beach and need to keep the hem out of the way as you walk on wet sand!

Grey Tie Dye Maxi Dress Worn With Yellow

grey and yellow: 4 outfit ideas for accessorising a grey tie dye maxi dress | awayfromtheblue

Part of the reason behind me wearing this maxi dress so often is that it's a beautiful neutral grey colour. The tie dye print isn't too bold, so I love to pair it with bright accessories. I like grey and yellow together, and when I was organising the photos for this post I realised it was a definite trend with this dress. Yellow bag, yellow necklace (or even both!) this grey dress works so well with yellow accessories.

Tie Dye Maxi Dress and Statement Necklaces

accessorizing a maxi dress with statement necklaces outfit ideas | awayfromblue

The beautiful of a maxi dress is that it's an instant, easy outfit, You don't need to accessorise or try too hard with it, you can just throw it on and go. If you do want to change it up a little though, a statement necklace is a great choice. I love bold and beaded ones like the first and third outfits, or you can just layer them up like in the other two outfits.

Jersey Maxi Dress In Summer

ways to wear a tie dye maxi dress in summer | awayfromtheblue

Taking full advantage of the 'throw on and go' benefits of a maxi dress that I mentioned above! I love a maxi dress for summer, you have an instantly pulled together looking outfit you don't need to spend any time planning. The jersey material of this dress is perfect - not too thick, not too thin, so it's a perfect choice on a hot day.

Tie Dye Maxi Dress and Light Layers

layering a tie dye maxi dress 5 outfit ideas with light layers | awayfromtheblue

Of course I wear my tie dye maxi dress outside of summer too! For spring or autum, or even just a cooler day, it's easy to add a light layer on top. Something like a cardigan, kimono, denim jacket, or even just a cosy scarf helps keep the chill off.

Jersey Maxi Dress Layered Under A Tee

layering a maxi dress with a tee 3 outfit ideas for spring | awayfromblue

Admittedly, layering a tee over a maxi dress is a fairly new combination for me. It's something I've seen other bloggers doing and decided to really embrace this past year, I love it! If you want to change up the look of a maxi dress you wear frequently, just pull on a tee and turn it into an instant skirt.

Tie Dye Maxi Dress In Winter

3 ways to wear tie dye maxi dress layered in winter leather jackets scarves | awayfromblue

Without snow in winter, maxi dresses can be worn year round in Brisbane. When it gets really chilly, I add a leather jacket on top, a big but colourful scarf and some boots underneath. If it's even colder where you are, you could layer tights or leggings underneath too. I like to get wear from my wardrobe most of the time, and layering a summer maxi dress to wear in winter is a good way to achieve that.

Jersey Tie Dye Maxi Dress In Pregnancy

5 outfit ideas non maternity maxi dress in pregnancy | awayfromtheblue

As I mentioned above, I've had two pregnancies in the time I've had this maxi dress. While it's not a maternity dress, the stretchy jersey and elastic that sits above a baby bump made this an easy option for pregnancy wear. Especially on a hot day! It's fun being able to look back on a dress I've worn while pregnant with both my boys that I'm still able to wear it now.

Maxi Dresses, Tartan Scarves, Leather Jackets and Rebecca Minkoff MAM

For something a little different from the jeans rut I'd fallen into, I pulled out my maxi dresses, layering them up to make them more winter weather appropriate. I love wearing my maxis year-round. To be fair, we don't have snow in Brisbane which makes them a more suitable choice, especially when worn with leather jackets, ankle boots and colourful tartan scarves to keep me cosy!

What I wore:

Scarf: red tartan scarf
DressJeanswest 'Elodie' tie dye grey jersey maxi dress
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots

Why I wore it:

So happy that I've hit 30 wears on this maxi dress! (I shared a little more about the 30 wears challenge here). The dress is a piece I first wore for Christmas a few years back and it's been worn often since, through two pregnancies and afterwards. As you can see, it layers up perfectly for winter with a cosy leather jacket like this too. Cooper's wearing his winter layers too with his wooly hoodie! 🐶

The tartan scarf was a fun way to add a little more colour and print to my outfit - and it kept me warm while we were outside playing in the playground at playgroup. Even with the tie dye print on the maxi dress, the subtle blue and grey print on the leather jacket, I felt this extra print wasn't too much and just completed the outfit nicely. It's such a pretty scarf.

Picked my neutral grey Rebecca Minkoff MAB to wear with this as it's the perfect bag for running around outside with the boys - easy to throw it on cross body with the long strap. And the grey worked perfectly with everything else going on in my outfit.

TMI Tag Video: 50 Questions About Me

Just for fun I thought I'd add this tag video I did recently - my friend Tess from NaptimeNigella tagged me to answer 50 different questions. Nice way to find out a little more about me!

What I wore:

Scarf: blue tartan scarf
Dressblack Jeanswest halterneck maxi dress
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagRebecca Minkoff MAB mini in soft grey

Why I wore it:

Since I liked the outfit formula above so much, I did what I frequently do and copied it again to wear it with different pieces. I picked a plain black maxi dress this time, with the bright cobalt leather jacket and the only print in the outfit was my blue tartan scarf. I think this outfit worked really well. I've worn and liked the scarf and jacket together before, so it was an easy option when wondering what to wear with this dress.

Again, I kept things simple with the bag, sticking with the neutral Rebecca Minkoff MAM. We took the boys into the city for something a little different. It was quite a big day for them, as afterwards we went over to my friend's place to watch Church Online together. The boys were definitely exhausted at the end of the night! The day was lots of fun though.

How You Can Wear It:

Maxi dresses don't have to be confined to the summer months! With some winter essentials like boots, a leather jacket and a cosy scarf, you can make them work for winter. Colourful tartan (aka plaid) scarves like these add a bit of colour and fun to a winter outfit too, and are a great pop against neutral dresses.

Tiered Sundresses In Winter With Cosy Cardigans and Rebecca Minkoff Bags

My previous post was all about wearing summer tanks in winter. This time I'm layering up some of my summer sundresses for winter temps. Both of these tiered strappy sundresses are from Kmart, and I've worn them in the cooler weather in the past although they are definitely most frequently worn in the warmer months. Keeping it simple, I added layers with boots and cardigans to make them work for cooler weather.

What I wore:

JacketJeanswest waterfall drape cardigan in navy night sky marle
NecklaceStarfish Project Veronica short yellow multi strand necklace
Dress: Kmart Aztec print tiered little black dress
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagRebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold

Why I wore it:

I wore this back near the start of winter, a busy day of rushing around getting last minute party things for 4 Year Old T's birthday. Long story short, the first supermarket we went to didn't have everything we needed, so I had to stop at multiple ones, and we went to 3 different stores in search of things to go on top of the cake before someone changed his mind again and we went back to the first place... 😂

Such a busy day, I wanted a simple outfit so a dress seemed like the best option. I thought everything would look nice until I put it on and realised it was a bit dark with all the black and navy.

When you want to add colour to an outfit, turn to accessories! That's my go-to rule, so I added this cheerful yellow statement necklace and my mustard Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan bag. While the yellows don't match, I felt they were just what this outfit needed.

Very pleased to report that unlike last year's over-ambitious cake, I wasn't up until the early hours of the morning finishing decorating this cake. My son was still just as impressed with it though which I'm happy about. (If you missed it, I've shared my party outfit here already).

Why I wore it:

Every time I wear this dress it makes me smile, but I felt it had been a long time between wears so I decided to give it another wear, even if we didn't have a particularly busy or exciting day. Nothing wrong with putting on a pretty dress just to run errands in! Plus the colourful and cheerful colours work well to keep you calm and prevent you becoming frazzled running errands with two little boys!

It's not the first time I've worn this dress with a grey cardigan and a colourful scarf. That previous outfit definitely inspired this recent one. The one big difference being that I made sure to pick a not as windy winter day when I wore this so that I didn't feel the cold coming in through the crochet border around the tiers of the dress.

I actually found this outfit a little warm in the middle of the day - this Louis Vuitton shawl is so cosy and while there's nothing in the print of the dress that matches this beautiful cobalt blue I thought it worked nicely with the coral. With all of the colour, the neutral grey Rebecca Minkoff Love bag seemed like a good accessory choice.

Birthday Party Maxi Dresses For Any Weather with Rebecca Minkoff Small Love Bag in Pale Coral

Maxi dresses work for so many different occasions. They are my go-to outfit for birthday celebrations, comfortable enough when running around with kids, but dressy enough and look like you've put a lot more effort in than you really have! For two recent birthday events, I wore my new Rebecca Minkoff small Love bag I bought in the recent sale, even though I wore different layers for each outfit to match the different temperatures. Maxi dresses are so easy to layer up or down.

What I wore:

grecian peasant tie mint pastel maxi dress with coral cross body bag birthday party host outfit | awayfromblue

silver bracelet stack, Rebecca Minkoff chevron quilted small Love crossbody bag in pale coral | awayfromtheblue

DressJeanswest Heather textured maxi dress in eggshell (C/O)
Belt: came with dress
Bracelets: the usual plus vintage charm bracelet
BagRebecca Minkoff chevron quilted small Love crossbody bag in pale coral

Why I wore it:

This is what I wore for my eldest's 4th birthday party. Crazy to think I have a 4 year old already!

I'll be honest here, I never left the house so the bag was basically just for show. (That's also why I didn't wear shoes). I love the pale coral against the mint colour of the maxi dress. My plan was to have the bag hanging off a chair with my phone, camera and keys in it so I always knew where everything was through the party. Unfortunately, I realised at the last minute that the bag is so small my camera (Sony Alpha) didn't fit in it, so that was a bit of a fail.

As much as I love this dress, the tie waist was a little inconvenient, with one of my boys untying it while playing with it as we sang happy birthday. When the dress is tied up it creates a blouson effect that you can see in the pics. When it's untied, it's much too long on my petite frame, ha! I spent the rest of the party furiously tying it back up every time it untied itself or was untied by an accidental tug.

Despite the bag not being big enough and the frequent belt retying that went on, I did like this outfit. The dress is a beautiful colour and a maxi dress is such an easy option when hosting a birthday party - just throw it on and you're done!

Why I wore it:

First, can we talk about how great that Insta photo is?! My friend is the best photographer and the rooftop bar had this perfectly instagrammable wall for us to use in our pics (16 Antlers if you're ever in Brisbane). It got a lot of love on Instagram when I posted it.

I wore this for another birthday party, but unlike the first outfit, this was a girly night out. I layered up in anticipation of the cold weather, by adding ankle boots, a leather jacket and a big blanket scarf to this summer maxi dress. It wasn't that chilly at the start of the night, but when we ended up cruising up and down the Brisbane river on the ferry, I was glad of all my extra layers!

It was the perfect first outing for my little Rebecca Minkoff love bag - I thought the bright yellow scarf worked nicely with the peachy colour of the bag. Not the first time I've worn yellow with this grey tie dye maxi dress either. I really like the combination.

As I was kid free I put on my prettiest dangly earrings too, and indulged in a few cocktails. It was such a fun night. Even if it was rather chilly at the end, my layers were perfect for it.

A maxi dress works for a night out in a bar toasting your friend with cocktails, or a casual catch up for a kid's birthday party. It really is a go-anywhere option, and a perfect choice for a busy mum as it's an instant outfit. Of course a maxi dress can work no matter the weather too! Layering Tees Over Maxi Dresses With Balenciaga Bags (Plus Updated Handbag Collection Video)

Layering a tee over a maxi dress is a nice way to add just a touch of warmth to your outfit, and to change up the look of a dress you wear frequently. I've been wearing my tees over maxi dresses a lot lately! I've also been wearing my Balenciaga bags often too, and for those who are interested I've shared an updated video of my collection below!

What I wore:

Bracelets: the usual plus Disney Couture Winnie the Pooh bangle
BagBalenciaga envelope clutch in 2012 mangue with giant 12 RGGH

Why I wore it:

Wouldn't change a single thing about this outfit - I loved it all! We went down the coast for a family birthday celebration. It was a warm day but I thought it might get cooler at night, as I picked my denim jacket to layer with. With the blue tee and grey tie dye maxi dress, I thought that this yellow Balenciaga envelope clutch would be a fun pop of colour.

The night didn't go quite how I expected. We were out in the morning and got back late, which meant nap time was late, which meant we were late for heading down the coast, so that we were badly affected by the traffic. I managed to find a rather roundabout route to avoid the traffic and get there in the end though, and even if we didn't get to spend a relaxing afternoon together as planned we did manage to get there in time to enjoy dinner, which was good.

The little gold touches though this outfit worked so nicely together I thought, with the gold mouse flats, heart necklace and bracelet complimenting the Balenciaga envelope clutch. Even if the clutch did stay in the baby bag for most of the night! Mum life 😅

Why I wore it:

Another tee over a maxi dress, another Balenciaga bag! As you can see from the video above, I have a lot of Balenciaga bags in my wardrobe. I love this tempete Balenciaga day bag, such a unique colour.

Wore this for a blogger date with Rachel from A Nesting Nomad. Now living in Sydney, she was up in Brisbane for the weekend and we took the opportunity to catch up and go grab a yummy gluten free brownie together. After a bit of a tough week, I was looking forward to a couple of kid free hours, but unexpectedly had to take the boys along with me. I regretted the long dangly earrings with the boys grabbing and tugging at them often. They were quite boisterous too, but Rachel was a sweetheart about it! So very sweet!

I did like this outfit, despite the earrings not being a very kid-friendly choice, as it was good to come up with another way to wear this beautiful summer dress and make it work for cooler weather.

Maxi Dresses and Kimonos With Purple Mini MAB Bag

Kimonos work just as well with maxi dresses as they do with denim. While kimonos and shorts was a summer staple for me, with the cooler weather the extra coverage a maxi dress gives makes it a better option for autumn. Especially when you add a pair of ankle boots too. For a little extra colour, I wore both of these maxi dress outfits with my purple Rebecca Minkoff mini MAB tote bag.

What I wore:

Dressblack Jeanswest halterneck maxi dress
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots

Why I wore it:

The Kindness Collective had a sale on kimonos a couple of weeks before Mother's Day, so the boys picked me out one each. My eldest picked this one, and I love the classic black and white with the floral print. I decided to keep things simple when I wore this to playgroup, with a black maxi dress and purple accessories for just a little bit of colour. Since it was a little chilly, I added the black ankle boots. It is the perfect way to make your maxi dresses work in spring or autumn.

I really liked this outfit - a simple combination with a fun pop of colour through accessories is a formula I default to easily. Even if the black maxi dress was quickly dirtied by toddler hands, haha!

Why I wore it:

This is what I wore on Mother's Day. I was spoiled with breakfast in bed and my boys made some cute gifts, as well as picking out the kimonos. I wanted to give this one a try right away to challenge myself as it seemed like the harder one to wear with the mix of colours in the zig zag print.

With purple being the dominant colour in the print, I decided to once again pull out the purple accessories. This plum Nibbly Bits teething necklace goes so nicely with the purple mini MAB tote bag.

Perfect outfit for spending some time at home relaxing and then heading down the coast to celebrate Mother's Day with my mum and family. Was comfortable all day.

How You Can Wear It:

You don't have to pack your kimonos away when the weather starts to cool! Swap out the summer shorts for something with a little more coverage like a maxi dress or jeans and you can continue to wear your colourful kimonos at the start of autumn or end of spring. A kimono is such a perfect topper with a maxi dress for an easy boho outfit too.
