Mater Mothers' Hospitals Skin Care Review: For Mum And Baby

When I went to the Bloggers Brunch a few months ago, I had the opportunity to talk with some brands about collaborations, including Mater. You might have already seen my Mater nappies review. This time around, I'm reviewing their skin care range! They kindly sent me all four products to try out.

Mater Mothers' Hospitals Skin Care Range 4 products for mum and bubs | awayfromblue

Just like the nappies, the skin care range was developed by Mater midwives and mums! The products are all Australian made. They are specifically developed for sensitive skin with low irritant ingredients, dermatologically tested and do not have petrochemicals or added parabens. You don't need a newborn to enjoy them either, I've included some other uses in the review.

As a mum and find these products are perfect for our family. I also love that the proceeds from the sale of the Mater maternity and baby care products go to support Mater Little Miracles, helping fund life-saving care and research for Australian babies. Read on for the details about how you can use and how we have used each product.

Mater Body Balm For Pregnancy

Mater Body Balm for Pregnancy | away from the blue

No, this isn't an announcement post! I'm not pregnant! While this product is formulated to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks, I think the ones I have gained over my pregnancies (that have been around for over 4 and a half years) might be a little too stubborn for this cream to have any effect! I still enjoyed using it though.

Uses:
  • During pregnancy to soften and replenish stretching skin
  • An all over intensive moisturising treatment (during, before, and after pregnancy)
  • As a light moisturiser in summer that quickly absorbs into skin without being greasy

It smells really nice - not overpowering at all. It is really moisturising and it made my hands feel softer right away. I have eczema on my hands but this soothed the skin and didn't make it react at all - possibly the oat extract helping there. It's a great all over moisturiser and one I'm going to continue to use even though I'm not pregnant. I found myself reaching for this over my regular moisturiser. This smells so much better!

Mater Baby Wash

Mater Baby Wash product review | awayfromblue

A soap free, no SLS cleanser. Developed for the sensitive skin of newborns, but suitable for older children and adults. Ideal for daily use, and can be applied to the skin like a shower gel or added to the bath to create bubbles.

Uses:
  • All-in-one wash for skin and scalp of babies
  • Anyone with sensitive skin who needs a soap free cleanser
  • Dogs who need a gentle soap free wash (yes, gentle enough to use on your fur-babies too!)

I love that this is soap free - having come across more than one baby wash that's irritated my eczema. This is so gentle, there are no issues to my skin when I fill up the bath with it. It creates plenty of bubbles despite the lack of SLS, as you can see from the photo above. It smells so good too, leaves a nice scent behind after a bath. So easy to dispense with the pump as well.

Mater Baby Moisturiser

mater mothers' hospitals baby moisturiser | awayfromtheblue

Extra mild moisturising lotion designed to protect against dryness and keep skin smooth. Full of wonderful emollients like the pregnancy body balm.

Uses:
  • After bath time to keep skin soft
  • For baby massage before bedtime
  • As a makeup remover

On my skin, I didn't like this product as much as the body balm for pregnancy above. On the kids it was perfect though. Nice and moisturising without feeling greasy, and smells beautiful. The pump makes it so easy to dispense the moisturiser while also trying to apply it to a wriggling toddler too. Such a good feature that parents of older kids will appreciate, I certainly did!

Mater Nappy Balm

mater nappy balm skin care product | away from the blue

The Mater nappy balm is unique in that it was formulated to closely replicate vernix! (That's the substance produced in the womb that coats and protects the baby, the 'waxy' white substance many are born with). Forms a protective barrier to repel wetness while also moisturising.

Uses:
  • as a protective nappy balm after changes
  • to soothe and heal irritated skin
  • as a spot treatment on mozzie bites or sunburn

I was really impressed with this product, particularly the tube packaging. It's really hygienic when you are changing multiple babies (as I was when I had 2 under 2!) and this would have come in very handy then. With the easy flip top to dispense it's a great one to have in your nappy bag, and will be a staple for us. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much, a nappy cream is a nappy cream right? This made such a difference and made changing nappies much faster. I am so glad I got to try it, has definitely replaced our usual go-to cream.

Don't just take my word for it! As you can see from all the stickers on the products, these have won multiple Mother & Baby and My Child awards. Definitely worth checking out. Their website has a full list of the ingredients in each product, along with the purpose of each, so you know exactly what you're getting.

Black Maxi Dresses And Red Rebecca Minkoff Micro Avery Bag

You know it's properly spring weather when I've got my denim jacket out again! I took advantage of the nicer warmer weather recently to wear some of my maxi dresses with my ankle boots and light jackets. I completed both outfits with a pop up of colour from the red Rebecca Minkoff micro Avery tote bag.

What I wore:

Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
Necklace: gifted Zatini red pendant necklace
Dressblack Jeanswest halterneck maxi dress
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagRebecca Minkoff red micro Avery cross body bag (new purchase)

Why I wore it:

We decided to take the boys to a nearby strawberry farm (Chambers Flats) after seeing some of the other Aussie Vlogging Mums having fun there. Edit: This was before the big strawberry tampering crimewave across Australia, I'd have second thoughts about letting the boys touch unwashed and unchopped strawberries now! Support your local farmer but take precautions as advised by the police - wash and cut up before giving to children.

I really wasn't sure what to wear, but it felt a little warm for jeans. I decided on a simple black halterneck maxi dress with ankle boots in case they had a closed in shoes rule. The red bag and necklace were a way to add more colour to my outfit, it was only when it was pointed out on Instagram that I realised it matched the berries! I just wanted to wear my new bag! 😂

The ankle boots were a great choice as the ground was uneven and muddy in parts, but as you can see my denim jacket didn't stay on long, it was a beautifully warm and sunny day. After filling our boxes with strawberries we sat by the playground and had a picnic. Was such a nice way to spend the day, and fun for the boys to see where strawberries came from. We had so many we ended up turning some of them into a delicious smoothie later.

Rebecca Minkoff Micro Avery Reveal

In case you missed it, I shared the reveal of this bag as part of my shopping haul video on YouTube, including how I managed to score this bag so cheaply, making it the cheapest leather handbag I've owned!

Why I wore it:

Another black maxi dress with this little red Rebecca Minkoff avery bag. It's just such a fun pop of colour against the black.

Again I went with ankle boots under my dress as I wasn't sure what the rules were for our first activity of the day - the Steve Irwin Sea Shepherd ship was in the docks at Brisbane and they were providing tours. We took the boys along so they could explore the ship, it was a lot of fun and something a bit different for them! As I shared on instagram, it can be a little tricky taking pics with the boys in tow. The photo above captures the struggle well, and why I try to get photos before I even leave the house, ha!

After going out for lunch and some naps for the boys, it was off down the coast for Father's Day dinner with my parents.

I thought my pretty embellished black maxi dress was perfect for dinner, but worried that it may have been a little overdressed for the ship tour. I swapped out the jacket and wore a denim jacket during the day to try dress it down a little.

Second Hand Shopping: Black Tees and Green Pants With Balenciaga Day Bag

Second hand shopping, opshopping, thrifting, whatever you call it. It's a big factor towards letting me continue to shop even though I'm working part time with two kids and much less disposable income than before!

The two outfits before show some of the secondhand pieces in my wardrobe. With the exception of the shoes, because I can never find shoes my size in an opshop! And the scarf I threw on at the last minute.

What I wore:

SAHM style black space dye tee green asos petite skinny jeans opshop finds | away from blue

Balenciaga truffle brown day hobo bag classic RH | away from the blue

awayfromtheblue instagram | black tee green skinny jeans opshop finds thrifted outfit glitter shoes Balenciaga day bag
Tee: thrifted Mix Apparel black marle tee
Jeans: thrifted ASOS petite green skinny jeans
Shoes: Kmart sparkly silver glitter sneakers (new purchase)
BagBalenciaga truffle brown RH classic day bag

Why I wore it:

With a warmer day, I was able to just wear a tee with no scarf or cardigan needed. It was a nice sign of winter coming to an end, even if it immediately got cold again afterwards.

While I do love splurging on accessories, I have a much lower budget in mind when clothes shopping! I think this outfit showcases that nicely.

The black space dye tee was a piece I picked up at the 'fill a bag for $2' sale at my local opshop. The green pants were just $5 from a different opshop. The bag was a preloved find from Designer Archives, a consignment store in Brisbane city. The only new thing in this outfit was the shoes, a $8 Kmart bargain!

While the warm weather meant a scarf was definitely not needed, I did think about wearing a necklace. I decided to give it a miss and just let the glitter shoes be the highlight of the outfit. Even if we weren't doing anything more special than running a couple of errands and going to the doctors, it was nice to have a bit of sparkle to do so! These were so comfortable for a first wear too.

Last worn: space dye tee, green skinny jeans, Balenciaga day bag. First time I've worn the silver shoes on the blog as they are a recent purchase.

My Complete Handbag Collection

Taken back when I had turned the spare room into a walk in wardrobe room, it's the most recent video I have showing my complete handbag collection - a lot of which were bought pre-loved.

Tee: thrifted Maison Scotch black paint splatter print long sleeved tee
Pants: thrifted French Connection olive skinny cargo pants
Shoes:  Converse Chuck Taylor All Star low in black
BagBalenciaga truffle brown RH classic day bag

Why I wore it:

Another thrifted outfit, although I added the scarf at the last minute. Like the shoes, the scarf was bought new, but on sale.

Just like the outfit above, this long sleeve black tee was picked up at a 'fill a bag with clothes for $2' opshop sale. I'm really happy with it, and knew that I wanted to wear it with these olive cargo pants. They were also an opshop find, from the same opshop (although before the $2 sale!). They were just $3. They are so slouchy and insanely comfortable.

As it was a little chilly in the morning for daycare drop off I added this paisley print snood - I think it was the perfect piece with the colours in the outfit, and I think it made the outfit. Once again, the accessories were the most expensive part of my outfit. I definitely have a formula I follow with outfits!

Blue Knits And Colourful Skinny Jeans With Balenciaga Bags

Wearing my favourite colour, blue, always gives me a bit of a boost. And when it's been a tough end to winter with kids getting sick, I default to blue! Keeping things colourful and wearing two of my blue knits with bold skinny jeans.

What I wore:

blue knit jumper with printed scarf, purple skinny jeans and Balenciaga work bag SAHM style | awayfromtheblue

Balenciaga raisin purple 2009 giant silver G21 hardware work bag | awayfromtheblue

Knit: blue Mossman knit jumper
JeansJeanswest blackberry super skinny jeans

BagBalenciaga raisin purple 2009 giant silver G21 hardware work bag

Why I wore it:

This was one of those days that just did not go well. The plan was a brief stop to pick up a few things in Kmart, maybe have a browse, and then head back home in time for a doctor's appointment.

The reality was me arriving at the shopping centre, then almost immediately rushing in looking for anyone with ice and / or first aid skills. After everything was okay, I had a bit of a shell shocked browse around Kmart missing half the things I needed to get, before going to the doctors. Not my best day!

Thankfully no major damage done, my son's injury looked worse than it was and all of the blood washed out of this knit (I decided to risk it and throw it in the normal wash with normal detergent, it held up okay!). And I did like the outfit. Horrible day, but otherwise lovely outfit!

Blue and purple is a colour combination I wear often, and I felt this Balenciaga work bag was overdue a wear. I like how nicely it matched the purple skinny jeans, you know I like a bit of matchy-matchy in my outfits sometimes.

Last worn: blue knit, purple skinny jeans, silver ballet flats, Balenciaga work bag. First time I've worn the scarf on the blog as it is a recent addition to my wardrobe.

Other ways to wearblue knit over a maxi dress, purple skinny jeans and kimono, silver ballet flats and skinny jeans, Balenciaga work bag and pencil skirt

Jumper: thrifted Valleygirl blue knit jumper
Jeans: thrifted ASOS petite green skinny jeans
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in white
BagBalenciaga truffle brown RH classic day bag

Why I wore it:

Since I liked the blue knit and colourful skinny jeans combo in the first outfit, I wore the same outfit formula a few days later. For a much more relaxed day!

It was a lot windier than expected though and I did wish that I'd put a long sleeved tee under this knit instead of the short sleeved one I did. It made it a little chilly when playing outside in the playground at playgroup with the boys.

This parrot print scarf is frequently worn with green - with the green birds in the print it's just to easy to wear it with the green jeans! I loved how all of the colours came together in this outfit, even if it wasn't as warm as I'd have liked.

The white Converse seemed like a good neutral shoe choice with the other colours, and I went with a neutral bag as well, my Balenciaga day bag. While I did like matching the bag and jeans like I did in the first outfit, I don't have a green bag to wear with this outfit.

Blue Knits Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

Blue knits are a nice way to add some colour to your cold weather wardrobe, working in spring, autumn or winter. For an extra touch of colour, try wearing them with colourful denim. I love blue and purple and blue and green together. Having the bright jeans was a good way to try other colour combinations. Of course you can also pair a blue knit with a neutral black or grey pair of jeans if you'd prefer.

Red Tees, Skinny Jeans, Cardigans and Louis Vuitton Bags

At the end of winter, while the days were warming up in Brisbane, the mornings were still pretty cold. It means layering up, so by the time it reaches 25 / 28 degrees (82 F) in the afternoon, you've shed all of your layers.

Despite wearing a similar outfit formula on both of these days, I had very different experiences with each!

What I wore:

red tee with skinny jeans converse grey maxi cardigan louis vuitton speedy bag | awayfromblue

Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere with heatstamp | awayfromtheblue

awayfromblue instagram grey cardigan skinny jeans leopard print scarf and red tee outfit

Why I wore it:

Wore this for a busy but fun filled day. I had the day off from work to volunteer at the Ekka (Brisbane's royal state show, kinda like the state fairs in the US). I dropped the boys off at daycare, ran a quick errand and started filming some videos before it was time to leave. Just as I was in the middle of filming I got a call from daycare that one of the boys had a fever. I frantically called around, found someone to take care of him, rushed to daycare to pick him up and then dropping him off in safe hands I headed out to the Ekka.

Got to the Ekka with plenty of time to stroll around taking in the sights, get some showbags and then get to work. My volunteer shift finished slightly early so I quickly picked up my bags and headed home to my boys, after quickly texting to make sure all was still okay. By the time I got home he really wasn't in a good state. I rushed him to the doctors (thank goodness for the 24/7 primary care centre nearby!) where the doctor scolded us for bringing him there instead of calling an ambulance and ended up calling the ambulance for us. Ending the night in Lady Cilento hospital was not how I had planned the day to go, but at least he's feeling better now.

Outfit wise at least I was comfortable! I picked the Converse as I knew I'd be in the kitchen volunteering for most of the day, and the scarf and cardigan were good layers to take off and on as it got too hot, and easily fit inside my Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere bag.

Louis Vuitton MM damier azur neverfull worn on arm | away from the blue

awayfromtheblue instagram navy and red skinny jeans outfit with poppy print scarf LV NF tote
Earrings: Kmart blue fringe crescent statement earrings (new purchase)

Why I wore it:

Same outfit formula as the one above, but a much more relaxed day! I wore this a few days after the incident above, I had scheduled the day off in advance to try give myself some downtime. Thankfully the little one was feeling much better so I didn't feel too guilty leaving him to have some me-time. I spent some time Christmas present shopping, picking up things I'd noticed the boys might like on a previous shopping trip. Yes it's early, but you need to take advantage of any kid-free moments you can get to shop!

As it was supposed to warm up to such a hot day, but I had an early start, I dressed in layers. I thought this poppy print scarf worked nicely with the red tee, but I needed a little something to cover my arms to so went with this navy waterfall cardigan. The navy cardigan also perfectly matched the statement earrings! By the time afternoon arrived and it was 20 degrees warmer than when I first ventured out, the scarf and cardigan had been ditched. Again, it was nice that they could both fit inside my bag, the Louis Vuitton damier azur neverfull this time.

After a busy morning, I had a leisurely lunch and treated myself to a pedicure in anticipation of the warmer weather sticking around. It was nice to enjoy the sunshine and warmth for a bit! I even managed to film a complete video too, after the less than perfect attempt a few days before.

Red Tees Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

A red tee is a versatile piece to have in your wardrobe! It's a fun pop of colour against neutral layers like in the first outfit, or works well with other colours like navy as in the second outfit. When in doubt, pair a red tee with neutral skinny jeans.

SAHM Life: Navy Dresses, Colourful Scarves and Mater Nappies

Talking about Mater nappies today, and sharing some dress outfits I wore recently. Because sometimes it's nice to break out of the stay at home mum default outfit of jeans and pull on a pretty dress!

Bright scarves make accessorising a printed dress really fun. As a bright and colourful scarf is bold enough on it's own, I try to wear it with a nice neutral outfit. In both of the outfits below I've layered up a navy printed dress with tights, ankle boots, and then a bold pop of colour with a scarf and my mustard Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan bag.

What I wore:

Dress: Zara printed bib front tunic dress
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots

Why I wore it:

This is what I wore to go to the closing down sale of my favourite opshop. There was a big 'fill a bag for $2' sale which I was lucky enough to wrangle the morning browsing at while hubby stayed home with the kids. It was supposed to be a warm day, but it was a cold early morning start for me so I wanted a nice cosy scarf to add to my outfit. I thought this one was perfect, the orange really pops with the navy and the little mustard micro Regan bag was another touch of colour that worked so well with the dress.

Had a fun morning browsing, filling two bags full of things for the boys and I. You can see what we got here. After I headed to Kmart, picked up a pair of shoes I'd been lusting over, and was back home in time for swim lessons. We ended up going out for lunch after, so I was glad I dressed up a little in this dress. Although I was grateful for the tights underneath, this dress can seem a little short when you're constantly bending down to toddler level!

Mater Nappies Review

Full disclosure - I received these nappies to try from Mater for the purposes of reviewing them, after chatting with the brand at the Blogger's Brunch a few weeks ago. I've also used these nappies before when my little one was a baby.

Mater Nappies for Toddlers Review | away from the blue blog

What Are Mater Nappies?

Nappies developed by Mater Mother's Hospitals! They are part of Australia's first product range developed by a hospital. Welcoming over 10,000 babies a year into the Mater Mother's Hospitals around Australia, they know babies well!

Benefits

The nappies are made from ultra-soft breathable material, dermatologically tested and proven not to cause skin irritation. The toddler nappies have double leg cuffs and provide triple protection against leaks, as well as a super-absorbent core.

Our Experience

As mentioned above, I've tried Mater nappies before. When my youngest was hospitalised as a baby almost 2 years ago (see pic above). During our extended stay at the Mater the hospital provided the nappies for us to use. I liked them and had no issues with them. When we went home though, we also went home with a bunch of medical equipment and a baby with a NG tube - both things we needed training on before we were discharged. We went back to our usual nappy brand we had lying around as it was easier and life continued on. Talking to the ladies from Mater during the Bloggers Brunch, I told them a little about my son's story and decided to give the nappies another try now he's bigger.

We found that the Mater nappies didn't leak - I think that's the biggest plus right there! During some of the time we were trialling the nappies, my little one was on a course of antibiotics so you can be assured they were tested to the max!

Will I Repurchase?

Yes! They are not only a product that works for us, I also like that the proceeds from the sale of the Mater Baby Products go to support Mater Little Miracles, funding specialist life-saving care and research for babies in Australia. If you're interested, you can get them online here or find a stockist here.

Why I wore it:

Since I liked the outfit formula above so much, I repeated a similar one again, as I like to do! This time, I picked a bright yellow Love quotes scarf to go with the striped navy tee dress, but I kept the bag and ankle boots the same. These ankle boots are the most comfortable I've ever owned, I was sad to see the brand shut up shop a couple of years ago!

While the linen scarf is a bold bright yellow and the Rebecca Minkoff Regan bag is more mustard, I think the two different shade worked well together in this outfit.

Wore this for a fun day out shopping with my mum and the boys. I got some early Christmas present ideas for the boys as we went around the stores. It was such a good day out, even if I didn't buy anything for myself. I'd been eyeing a dress in Jeanswest for an upcoming wedding, but I was a bit disappointed when I saw it in person. I did like this outfit a little more than the one above - the dress is a more mum-friendly length, with the hem longer in the back!

Orange and Yellow Scarves Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

It's easy to stick to neutral outfits in winter, as you're guaranteed all your layers will go together! But it's nice to add a touch of colour through bright accessories. I love my colourful handbags, but a bold and bright scarf is another fun way to accessorise. Bright citrus colours like orange and yellow are a great pop against navy outfits.
