Colourful Cardigan and Maxi Skirt Outfits

I like to wear most of my clothing year round. While my winter knits do get boxed up for summer (definitely not needed when it's 35 degrees C and 90% humidity!), my summer pieces stay in my wardrobe all year. It means I can pick 'summery pieces' like these maxi skirts and layer them up a little for cooler weather. A cosy cardi is a nice layer to add to a summer skirt.

Why I wore it:

So excited to get this mustard cardi out again! After I did 6 months without shopping last year I was thrilled to find this in my local opshop for $2 - and it's sure to get even more wear this year than it did last year. It was perfect to keep me cosy for a busy Saturday - we had a morning flying our kite at the park, then watching the church online service at a friend's house.

Mustard yellow and aquamarine with the blue chambray skirt makes for a colourful outfit. The black striped tank seemed like the perfect neutral to wear with it. The mustard yellow and aqua combo is one I've worn before here.

Normally, I'd wear a top tucked into the top of the maxi skirt, to make the top hit at a more flattering spot on my petite self. This time around though, with the long line of the cardigan and maxi skirt, I actually preferred the top untucked! I've been trying to think differently about my outfits lately. Even if it's just something as simple as wearing a top I'd always tuck in untucked, it's nice to try different things.

Why I wore it:

While I loved the outfit formula above, I didn't like it so much this time I tried it. It's the same basic pieces, though, a striped tank, maxi skirt and colourful cardigan. While I like all of the pieces separately, I just felt they didn't look as good together as the outfit at the top. I felt it was good enough in my rush to leave the house and get to playgroup on time with the boys though!

I also forgot just how breezy this skirt is to wear, with a split on both dies up to my knee. It made staying cosy outside in the playground a little trickier. Even with the ankle boots,it wasn't enough when the wind picked up.

I don't think it's a complete outfit fail, but I think a different maxi skirt or a simpler cardigan would have improved this outfit. One of those ones where you throw things on in the morning after waking up with a vague idea of what to wear, and the resulting outfit shows that you've thrown it on 😂

Winter Maxi Skirts, Knits and Red Saddle Bag

I love my maxi skirts, even in winter. An easy way to make them winter-appropriate is by adding a cosy knit jumper. My bright handbags are another thing I wear often in winter too, I don't think you need to reserve brighter bags for summer wear.

Why I wore it:

I decided to wear this knit because as I said in my previous post, I'm trying to wear through more of my winter things before the cold weather disappears. I thought this jumper would look nice in a monochrome outfit with my chambray maxi skirt.

It was a very cold day when I wore this to playgroup though. As we'd have to be outside, I added a few extra layers. A long sleeve top under my jumper, and some leggings under my maxi skirt. The chambray isn't the thickest material to keep me cosy in winter, but the leggings underneath worked perfectly for our time spent at the playground outside.

I've worn red and blue together before and liked the combo, so the red skull scarf and saddle bag seemed like a nice touch with all of the blue.

Why I wore it:

First time I wore this knit I didn't manage to get a blog photo, although I did share a pic on my insta stories. My friend very generously let me have this Wildfox Couture jumper when she had a wardrobe clearout last year. It took a while for the weather to be cool enough to wear it again.

It's a very comfy knit, and it's got a lot of distressing on it. So much so that when I shared it on Insta stories people asked if Cooper had gotten to it, ha! The first time around I found that the rips were a little inconvenient with a toddler, he kept grabbing at them.

This time around I rolled up the sleeves and tucked the jumper in a little to keep the distressing out of the way, and found it a lot more kid-friendly. I wore this to work from home and do the daycare drop off/pickup so it limited the amount of time the boys could tug on it too 😂

Will try pick a fairly kid free day for the next time I wear this jumper too. It's too cosy and pretty to leave in a box until next winter when the boys are bigger and less grabby.

How You Can Wear It:

Maxi skirts can be layered up and worn year round. You can add a colourful and cosy knit to be weather appropriate. If it's a really cold day or you plan on being outside a lot, you can add hidden layers with a long sleeve tee or even leggings underneath. I'm wearing Converse in these outfits but ankle boots are another option to keep your feet cosy.

Make these outfits work for breastfeeding by layering a breastfeeding singlet under and just lifting the jumper to feed.

Maxi Skirts, Scarves and Rebecca Minkoff Bags

While it's much more difficult getting a baby and a toddler ready to go somewhere, I still try get out as often as I can. I find that toddler T is much happier to play with his toys or read books quietly with me as I feed his brother if we've gotten out at some point during the day. The best bit about living where we do in Brisbane is that we are close to so many libraries. I can take the boys to the rhyme time sessions almost any day of the week and they can sing and dance along. Maxi skirts make easy outfits for those kinds of days.

I really liked this scarf and henley top together last time I wore them, so was eager to wear the combination again. It seemed perfect for the cold and foggy morning. By the time we got to the library, the fog had gone and Brisbane was experiencing a little winter heatwave. I took the scarf off and wished I'd worn short sleeves too!

I really liked this outfit, just a little overdressed for the unexpected heat.

Why I wore it:

Another maxi skirt, another Rebecca Minkoff bag. I do tend to cycle through a few favourites in my wardrobe! While I am trying to wear more of what I own, I have combinations I keep coming back to. When trying to get two little ones ready each morning I often don't get a chance to think very long about what I want to wear and so reach for the familiar.

Maxi skirts go with everything and this top, although not a nursing top, is so easy to breastfeed in so this was the perfect outfit for a morning at the library rhymes session and catching up with a friend. Just like the outfit above, the scarf didn't stay on too long during the day.

Monochrome Maxi Skirt Outfits: Chambray and Grey with Rebecca Minkoff Accessories

I've been enjoying wearing my Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan bag lately. As I showed in a previous post, the mustard yellow colour is nice with a neutral outfit as well as other brights. I've worn it with denim shorts but below I'm wearing it with my other favourite option, maxi skirts!

Why I wore it:

First wearing of my new tee. ($3 at Kmart, they have an awesome selection of basics at the moment!) I thought it would look nice with this maxi skirt. I've worn the skirt with a navy tee before and liked the colour combination but didn't like how the pieces sat together. I much preferred this blue tee with the chambray skirt. I thought the yellow bag was a good piece to break up all of the blue, and the nude Rebecca Minkoff studded sandals were perfect as well.

This is what I wore when I went out to catch up with some other mums and bubs from the Australian Breastfeeding Association. I hadn't been along to the group in a while with everyone being unwell so much over winter, but we were all better and had the morning free to attend for once.

Why I wore it:

Same accessories, same outfit formula! Monochrome maxi skirt with a tee, teething necklace, Rebecca Minkoff studded sandals and micro Regan satchel. When you like an outfit why not try recreate it again? I do it a lot!

This was a quieter day - a little bit of shopping and errands in the morning and then spending time with my mum in the afternoon. Just like the monochrome maxi skirt outfit above, this was easy to wear. This is an old grey tee that's one of my favourites, although I wear it sparingly as I don't want to wear it out too soon! I wore it to 'announce' my pregnancy with baby T in the office couple of years ago.

Even with the colourful outfit and bag though I felt this outfit was missing something - I like grey but this was a little too much. I think a kimono or scarf to add some more colour would have been perfect. I didn't like this outfit as much as the one above.

Maxi Skirts, Blue Scarves and LV Speedy Bandouliere

I have a lot of great scarves, but my favourites are definitely my blue ones. No surprise as it's my favourite colour! They are a great finishing touch to an outfit, even if it doesn't have any blue in it. Below are two outfits with blue scarves. One as an extra touch of blue to an outfit with blue in it already, and one adding some colour to a black outfit.

Why I wore it:

After paying a small fortune to a big 'chain store' tailor after my little local lady shut up shop, I was happy to wear this now shortened maxi skirt again on a day it was scheduled to rain. There were no issues this time, unlike the last time where the too-long hem got wet in a puddle.

Wore this out for a trip into the city with my parents after toddler T's swim lessons. We did a lot of walking so I was glad I'd worn my Converse. Unfortunately the rain started soon after we arrived in the city so we didn't hang around long.

Cold and rainy day - not the best morning for playgroup but we headed out anyway. I was pleased it warmed up a little and the sun came out so toddler T could run around in the playground outside for while.

I felt this outfit was a bit dark, so the navy scarf was a nice way to add a little bit of colour without being too bright. I've worn this bird print scarf and striped maxi skirt together before, I really like the combination and I was just as comfortable and happy in this outfit as I was last time I paired those pieces together.

Neutral and Colourful Maxi Skirt Outfits for Spring

If you follow on instagram you'll know baby boy's in hospital. I still have pre-scheduled blog posts like this that will continue to be published, and he's just in as a precaution. We hope to be home for Christmas!

I enjoyed the monochrome maxi skirt outfits I wore a short time ago so much that I wore the skirts similarly again! I liked these outfits just as much as the original ones. While it's summer here in Australia, I wore these in Spring in November.

What I wore:

Why I wore it:

A simple maxi skirt and tee outfit was all that was needed for a quiet day. A little bit of shopping in the morning and a doctor's appointment in the afternoon.

Although I've had both this tee and skirt for about 2 years I was surprised to look through the blog and see this is the first time I've worn them together! It was a nice easy outfit with a little bit of colour with the necklace and purple mini MAB tote bag.

Why I wore it:

This more colourful outfit was worn for a busier day. We had playgroup in the morning and then another specialist appointment for baby boy in the city in the afternoon. Thankfully my mum helped me with that last part, as although he'd run around at playgroup all morning it's still a big ask to have a toddler sit quietly in a doctor's office.

Blue being my favourite colour, of course I really liked the colour of this outfit. Not too sure about the length of the top with the skirt though. The front panel style means I can't really tuck it in a little (like I'd usually do with a long top) and still breastfeed in it. I did think the proportions were a little off, so I probably wouldn't wear these two pieces together again.

Maxi Skirts with Cobalt Leather Jacket And Ankle Boots

I really liked maxi dress and leather jacket outfit formula the few times I did wear it over winter. I didn't get the chance to wear it as much as I liked and thought I'd have to pack away all my leather jackets for spring, but a sudden cold snap did give me the chance to get more wear out of my cobalt leather jacket. This time around I paired it with maxi skirts instead of dresses, although I didn't keep it on for long when I wore either outfit.

Why I wore it:

I liked this outfit so much I actually wore it twice in one week! Put it together to work from home and then wore it again a couple days later to attend my local ABA meeting after viewing a house design. I really like this polka dot tee and chambray maxi skirt together, I'm sure I'll wear them together again at some stage! For an impluse buy this tee has been getting a lot of wear lately. Might just be that I'm excited to have something new in my wardrobe after seven months without shopping.

I did briefly swap out the leather jacket for a softer hoodie to babywear baby boy through the house as it was a building site, and picked flat boots instead of the heeled Pistol boots I'd worn to work from home. I babywear a lot, but babywearing with a heel I haven't attempted!

Why I wore it:

Just like the second time I wore the outfit above, the cobalt leather jacket didn't stay on long this time either. It was a cold morning so I decided on a long sleeve top as well as the leather jacket. Had a few errands to run before playgroup and so by the time I'd got there I'd decided to leave the jacket in the car - it was a really warm day and so nice sitting outside as the boys played.

I've been wearing this recently thrifted maxi skirt with a lot of blue. When I saw it in store while dropping off some donations and realised it was my size, I did a quick mental run through of some outfits I could make with it - all involving neutrals. The first time I wore it I tried it with a blue tee and since I loved it so much, I figured the cobalt jacket would look great with it.

Despite being overly warm on a hot day, I really liked this outfit. I still have so many ways I want to wear this skirt, a great $3 find!


Last worn: cobalt leather jacket (above), black henley, black ankle boots, Rebecca Minkoff striped mini MAC (above). First time I've worn the maxi skirt as it's a recent purchase.

Other ways to wear: cobalt leather jacket and office wear, black henley and pencil skirt, black ankle boots and little black dress, Rebecca Minkoff striped mini MAC and navy tunic.

Perfect for pregnancy: black henley in second trimester, ankle boots in second trimester, stripe mini MAC and maternity jeans.

How You Can Wear It:

You can make your maxi skirts work in cooler weather by adding a leather jacket. Good for a snow and rain-less winter day, or a milder spring or autumn day. Ankle boots help keep you warm too.
If you have a colourful leather jacket you could go monochrome like in the first outfit, or a bright contrast like the the red and blue in the second outfit.
