SAHM Style: Maxi Skirts in Winter ~ Adding Some Colour

These pictures were taken earlier in June, before the 'Antarctic Vortex' hit Australia. No chance of going jacket-less now, ha! I'm just a little behind with blogging, so these are some different ways I've worn maxi skirts in winter with slightly more normal Queensland temperatures! I'd been feeling a little like I'd been neglecting my maxi skirts lately so I made more of an effort to wear them.

First, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is now open to the public! I mentioned it when it was open to card holders last week so you could add some things to your wishlist ready to purchase. Wanted to share the sale with you now it's open to everyone, even though I'm doing #noBuyJuly15 and won't be buying.
Don't let my shopping ban stop you from picking up some bargains! Unless of course you are also doing #noBuyJuly15, in which case don't click on the links, think of how much you're saving by skipping the sale instead.

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Jumper, Printed Snood and Stripe Maxi Skirt Winter casual SAHM outfit

Rebecca Minkoff mini quilted affair bag in fire engine red
Scarf:  Seed Heritage Paisley print snood (on sale!)
Jumper: thrifted blue Mossman knit jumper
Skirt: Target black and white striped maxi skirt
ShoesRMK Chester black ankle boots
BagRebecca Minkoff mini quilted affair bag in fire engine red (on sale in pink and on sale in black)

Why I wore it:

I was actually quite cosy in this outfit - good for a quiet Sunday doing some shopping. We had a big night the evening before with friends so a relaxing day was welcome! Did a little bit of print mixing with the paisley snood and the striped maxi skirt, and I thought the bright colours of the bag and jumper worked well together.

It's the second time I've worn both the jumper and the handbag, so I'll be doing purchase reviews for both. I don't know if it's the fact that I'm so behind with blogging or because I just bought so much in June, but I've really fallen behind with sharing what I wore immediately after buying it. Although I did manage to wear both these items in June, the same month I purchased them, it's just taken them a while to get onto the blog. I think #noBuyJuly15 will help me get on track and just wear and enjoy what I own for a while! I definitely need a break from shopping. Despite all the great sales at the moment!

This jumper was an impulse buy, I saw it as I walked past the local op-shop and couldn't stop thinking how perfect it was for winter. It met the 'wardrobe gap' I have of being a nice plain block colour top, so I bought it. It's cosy and comfortable and machine washable so great for winter with baby. I like the curved hem, it's a really good length on me for layering over skirts (or dresses!) as it's slightly cropped and hits at a flattering spot without overwhelming my petite frame. I did recently buy another blue knit, so this wasn't a real 'must have', more an impulse buy. I do think the two tops are different enough for them both to get some wear, and I got rid of a third blue knit I already had to make this purchase make a little more sense! Otherwise my wardrobe is going to turn into a big pile of blue again....

The handbag was another impulse buy! June really was the month of unnecessary purchases....I'd often thought about trying this style of Rebecca Minkoff bag, as I like my mini MAC bags, and I know this is similar in size. When I saw it on ebay, and then when it was relisted again...I decided to just go for it. It was a bargain! I'm still not sure it's a keeper in my bag collection - it's nice, but I do prefer the mini MAC style so this probably was not the best purchase. It's still going to get used, maybe just not as much as my other Rebecca Minkoff cross body bags.

I did a video review for the bag too:

Some great maxi skirt options:

Why I wore it:

This outfit was not warm enough, even with the scarf! I spent a bit too much time in the morning trying to see if any other scarves looked nice before I settled on this combination - which I've worn before - so that when I did manage to get out the door with baby I hadn't spent any time thinking I'd need a jacket! Luckily we weren't outside for too long.

I wasn't too sure of the combination of scarf and top together last time I wore them, but I really liked it this time around. I would have liked it even more if I'd remembered a jacket of course ;)

Last worn: printed scarf, teal henley, black jersey maxi skirt, Converse, Louis Vuitton Speedy bandouliere bag.

Other ways to wearprinted scarf with jeans and a blazer, teal henley with jeans, black maxi skirt with a printed tank, Converse with skinny jeans, Louis Vuitton Speedy bandouliere bag for the office.

Casual Autumn Outfits: Layering With Blue Printed Scarves

With the autumn weather starting to settle in it can get a little chilly in the mornings. I'm enjoying it, as I get to wear some of my bigger scarves that are just too warm to wear in spring/summer. Below are two casual stay at home mum style outfits with some big cosy printed scarves.

What I wore:

Marc By Marc Jacobs turquoise stargazer scarf purple tank stripe maxi skirt converse RM MAM

Rebecca Minkoff Minkette grey MAM bag with striped skirt blue purple tank and scarf
TankJeanswest Jenni basic singlet in Royal Lilac purple
Skirt: Target black and white striped maxi skirt
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in black
BagRebecca Minkoff MAB mini in soft grey

Why I wore it:

I wasn't too sure what the weather would end up like on this day. I didn't have much to do after a busy morning, so just wanted to be comfortable. Maxi skirt and Converse is always a good idea, and I went with the tank and the scarf as I thought it might warm up later. It ended up being a really warm day so I didn't need the scarf when I was outside in the afternoon. Was good to have it in the morning and evening though.

First couple of times I wore this scarf I wore it with red, so I thought I'd try a different colour this time and went with purple. I really liked this colour combination too. I've been trying to break out of my little rut of pairing everything colourful with something grey, and being slightly more adventurous with colour.

Last worn: Marc By Marc Jacobs Stargazer scarfpurple tank, stripe maxi skirt, Converse, Rebecca Minkoff grey MAM.

Other ways to wear: blue printed scarf and red dresspurple tank and printed shorts, Converse and dress for spring, Rebecca Minkoff MAM with wrap dresses for the office, striped maxi skirt and grey tee.

What I wore:

SAHM Style: blue leopard print scarf white shirt Jeanswest prima denim skinny jeans SAHM Style
Scarf: Cotton On animal print scarf in blue
TopJeanswest Elise longline emroidered shirt coconut blue
JeansJeanswest Bindi skinny 7/8 jeans in indigo luxe

Why I wore it:

This was taken a couple of days after the outfit above, when Brisbane had a taste of the wild weather that had badly affected Sydney. I'd made sure to get organised and run all my errands earlier in the week so I had nothing to do but stay at home and snuggle with baby T. The scarf was needed as I was still recovering from my cold and had completely lost my voice. Poor baby had to make do with me reading and singing to him in a whisper!

The white shirt wouldn't normally be my first choice for a day at home with baby, but it was the first day of the Fox in Flats instagram style challenge for May, and the prompt for the day was to wear a white shirt (as it was white shirt day for OCRF). No bag or shoes as I literally stayed in the house all day listening to the rain with baby T and Cooper.

DH was one of the lucky ones, as he had been sent off-site for the day he didn't have to battle through the crazy traffic and flooded roads to get home and he got home a little earlier than usual. I know there were a lot of people in Brisbane who didn't make it home until really late that evening, and some not until the next day! We had a nice quiet evening at home, until we got a knock on the door from our neighbour as DH's car was about to be swept away!

The streets around us started flooding really quickly. I've never seen anything like it, not even in the big floods of 2011. Thankfully our house was on high enough ground that it became part of a little island, DH managed to move his car away from the flood waters, and by the next morning the water was gone. Seeing the water creeping up our driveway was a really scary sight though. We definitely weren't prepared for something that bad, we were lucky to all be together and have all our home comforts (and power and water) to just wait it out. Shows how important it is to get to know your neighbours too, if we hadn't had that knock on the door we wouldn't have known until it was too late, the flood waters would have submerged the car if it stayed where it was. Thankful for our neighbours looking out for us!

Last worn: blue leopard print scarf, embroidered shirt, prima denim skinny jeans.

Other ways to wear: print mixing with striped top and leopard print scarf, shirt, shorts and ankle boots, colourful prints and skinny jeans.

Thrifted Finds: Bright Tops and Maxi Skirts and Rebecca Minkoff Bags

During my wardrobe detox one of the 'gaps' identified in my wardrobe was some good bright coloured basic tops. I have lots of prints and grey tops and tees, but not a lot of just plain colours. I do have a few basic tanks, but I've been looking for something a little fancier than that, so that I can wear them to work easily as well. I haven't had much luck finding bright colours in the stores, but op-shops (thrift stores) organise everything by colour so shopping for colours is easy! Plus you can't beat the prices ;) Below are two outfits where I wore my recently-thrifted finds.

What I wore:

Away From Blue yellow tank grey jersey maxi skirt converse blazer RM Swing bag

Rebecca Minkoff canary yellow swing bag with grey maxi skirt pinstripe blazer
Jacket: thrifted Valleygirl pinstripe blazer
NecklaceTai gold alphabet necklace layered with Roie Designs long freshwater pearl necklace with tassel
Tank: thrifted Cotton On yellow tank (new purchase)
Skirt: Target grey marle maxi skirt
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in white
BagRebecca Minkoff Swing bag in canary yellow (on sale in pink!)

Why I wore it:

Wore this after the dawn service on ANZAC day. I had layered up for the dawn service in a black top and cosy hoodie to stay warm, and it was nice to remove those layers and show some colour for the rest of the day. It's the first time I've worn this tank - one of my new purchases.

I decided to wear this blazer as it fit the 'fine lines' theme for the last fox pack style dare challenge on instagram, and as it was a little chilly to have my arms uncovered. This is the third time I've worn this blazer (previously worn here and here). I bought it on one of my op-shopping (thrifting) trips while I was on my maternity leave, thinking it would fit perfectly when I didn't have the baby bump in the way. I wasn't too impressed with the way it fit when I was pregnant, and this time around I wasn't entirely happy either. I think it's the shoulder pads and the placement of the cuffed sleeves. It's leaving my wardrobe, no point hanging onto it if I am fussing about the way it sits when I wear it. I'm certainly not lacking blazers!

Leaving My Wardrobe: pinstripe blazer

Away from Blue valleygirl pinstripe navy blazer worn 2 ways with maxi skirt denim skinny jeans
Previous outfits here and here.

Last worn: pinstripe blazer, grey maxi skirt, Converse, Rebecca Minkoff yellow Swing bag. First time I've worn the tank as it is a new purchase.

Other ways to wear: the same outfit at 40 weeks pregnant! Regular blazer as maternity wear, grey maxi skirt with pink striped tank, spring dress and Converse, yellow bag with a blue dress.

What I wore:

Pattern Mixing Colour Blocking Red printed kimono cobalt blue tee striped maxi skirt

Rebecca Minkoff minkette MAB mini MAM soft grey satchel bag
KimonoChoies red vintage pattern kimono
NecklaceHouse of Harlow sunburst necklace in silver and grey
Tee: Thrifted Dotti blue tee
Skirt: AT by Atmos&Here Mars striped maxi skirt
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagRebecca Minkoff MAB mini in soft grey

Why I wore it:

Spent the morning at the shops with DH and baby T, and then we had the grandparents over in the afternoon, so just a nice casual and comfortable outfit.

I've worn this kimono with a blue top before and really liked the colour combination, so I thought it would be nice with this new-to-me cobalt blue tee. And it was a lovely little bit of print mixing with the striped maxi skirt. I'm really pleased to see that I haven't actually worn this kimono with grey yet - I'm being a little bolder with my colour choices lately, encouraged by the personal stylist doing 'my colours' briefly so I know a little bit more about what things look good on me and look good together.

Last worn: Ray-ban Wayfarer, printed kimono, striped maxi skirt, Havaianas, Rebecca Minkoff grey MAM bag. First time I've worn the tee as it is a recent purchase.

Other ways to wear: kimono and gold jeans, striped maxi skirt with pastel camigrey RM MAM bag with lace outfits

Converse, Maxi Skirts, Scarves, Marc By Marc Jacobs Handbags

Baby T has arrived, and I'm blogging less regularly as life revolves around a newborn and pyjamas are my main OOTD. I'm continuing to share my outfits when I leave the house and have time to take a photo.

Here's what I wore to pop into the city one afternoon:
skull scarf, stripe top, denim jacket, maxi skirt and converse OOTD

marc by marc jacobs carob brown fran bag
Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
ScarfAlexander McQueen pink pashmina in skull and floral print
Top: Kmart striped drop shoulder tee
SkirtTarget grey marle maxi skirt
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in black
Bracelets: the usual
BagMarc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown

We'd been waiting a little while for some paperwork to come through for baby T. Luckily when we found out it was ready for us to pick up, my family were visiting so we were able to leave baby at home and head into the city. As per usual, getting dressed quickly was necessary so I went with my default outfit - maxi skirt, stripes, converse and a skull scarf! Getting a little predictable, but it's good to have outfit staples to fall back on when I don't have a lot of time. Added the denim jacket to keep warm as it was cooling in the evening.

During the pregnancy I had fun playing dress up in my wardrobe now and then, to see what clothes still fit the growing bump and to come up with outfit ideas. Clothes are much further down my list of priorities now if I do get a moment of free time. I usually have a nap instead! I honestly do, you should see the housework that's being neglected ;) Life with baby means less housework, more naps.

Last worn: denim jacket, skull scarf, stripe top, target maxi skirt, Converse, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran bag.

Here's what I wore to run errands with baby T:
winter wear converse, maxi skirt, neon leopard print scarf, peach knit jumper
SunglassesRayban new Wayfarers
Scarf: Supre neon pink leopard print scarf
Jumper: Supre knit loose fit jumper in bahamas
SkirtTarget black and white striped maxi skirt
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in black
Bracelets: the usual
BagMarc by Marc Jacobs pretty nylon Eliz-A-Baby bag

Sometimes we have appointments we can't get out of and we need to bring baby T along - despite the many offers of friends and family to baby sit. Wore this to take baby T out for an early morning appointment and to run a few quick errands. Again with a maxi skirt, but just a light knit as we weren't out long and a jacket wasn't needed. I thought the colours in the scarf worked well with the peach of the jumper, and I thought I'd better wear something other than a skull scarf for a change!

Last worn: Ray-ban, neon leopard scarf, peach knit, stripe maxi skirt, Converse (see above), Marc by Marc Jacobs baby bag.

Olive Embroidered Pieces: Tanks and Soft Shorts

Making the most of the autumn heatwave where it felt like summer just a few weeks ago and wearing some more tanks and soft shorts outfits. I picked these green tanks to wear after seeing a post on Jodie's blog about wearing different shades of green, and realised these tanks were overdue a wear.

What I wore:

olive embroidered tank, printed culotte shorts, rebecca minkoff camera bag heatwave mum style | awayfromblue

Rebecca Minkoff MAB Camera Bag in almond | awayfromtheblue

awayfromblue instagram olive embroidered tank, black printed shorts, rebecca minkoff camera bag
Tank: Target embroidered khaki tank
ShortsJeanswest Parker printed shirred short
ShoesNovo Tawny rose gold sandals
BagRebecca Minkoff MAB Camera Bag in almond

Why I wore it:

I had thought about wearing a kimono with this outfit, but when it was 39 degrees (102 Fahrenheit) I decided to keep it simple with just the tank and soft shorts. Spent one of my usual days with the boys, attending the playground and library in the morning and trying to fit in a few errands too. We didn't spend long at the playground though due to the heat!

This olive embroidered tank was a complete impulse buy from the Target sale rack a couple of years ago and every time I wear it I'm grateful to my past self for picking it up! It worked perfectly for breastfeeding, the long loose style letting me pull it up on one side while still keeping my belly covered. And on a hot day the loose flowing fabric was perfectly cool.

Paired with some light shorts and then the rose gold sandals to match the gold hardware on the Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag, perfect outfit.

Last worn: olive embroidered tank, black printed shorts, rose gold sandals, Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag.

Other ways to wearolive embroidered tank for travel, black printed shorts in monochrome outfit, rose gold sandals and maxi skirt, Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag and maxi skirt.

What's In My Bag: Rebecca Minkoff MAB Camera Bag

ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in white
BagRebecca Minkoff MAB Camera Bag in almond

Why I wore it:

This was the outfit that came to mind when talking with Jodie in the comments of her blog post, about trying two green pieces together. I thought this striped tank would be a nice match with the olive embroidered shorts. I was surprised when I put the two together and realised the tank wasn't as olive as I'd thought, more of a khaki! I decided to try it anyway, but at the last minute added a bit of brightness to all the neutrals with the plain white kimono.

I have a lot of kimonos in my collection, and this plain white one comes in helpful when I can't decide what printed one to wear, as it goes with everything! It came in helpful at the playground too for a bit of a blocker against the mozzies, they have been particularly bad in the Bayside lately!

Again I stuck with the Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag, the tan is a nice neutral with the olive tones. Picked closed in shoes as it was a little cooler, and Converse are so comfortable for running around the playground with the boys.

Last worn: white crochet kimono, navy and gold tassel necklace, green and grey striped tank, olive embroidered shorts, Converse, Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag (above).

Other ways to wearwhite crochet kimono and printed shorts, green and grey striped tank and skinny jeans, olive embroidered shorts and printed scarf, Converse and printed dress, Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag and maxi skirt.

Perfect for pregnancygreen and grey striped tank in second trimester, Converse in second trimester.

Olive Embroidered Pieces Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

I find green a tricky colour to wear, but olive is a nice neutral! You can play it safe like I have in the first outfit by wearing it with other neutrals, black and tan and gold all work nicely. If you're feeling more adventurous, you can branch out a little more and try two green pieces together like I have in the second outfit with the olive embroidered shorts, for something a little different.

Wearing Maxi Skirts in Winter - Scarves and Long Sleeve Tees

Although it is officially spring (and has been for 10 days now) I still have some winter outfits to post! Noticed that I'd been wearing denim a lot lately, so I'm trying to create some variety by wearing my dresses and maxi skirts more. I don't want to get stuck in a blue denim rut.

Here's what I wore to go out shopping with baby T:
SunglassesRayban new Wayfarers
ScarfSeed Heritage Paisley print snood
TeeAtmos&Here grey Arizona zip tee (New purchase, on sale!)
SkirtTarget black and white striped maxi skirt
Shoes: Wittner 'Bolla' black bow detail flats
BagMarc by Marc Jacobs pretty nylon Eliz-A-Baby bag

It was a little chilly, and I wanted to be cosy so long sleeved tee and a maxi skirt seemed like a good idea. I thought I'd leave the tee loose and baggy rather than tucking it in, I liked the long drapey layers when I added the scarf too. Normally I'd go for something tucked into the skirt, but I just liked the look of this with it hanging free.

This is the second time I've worn this tee since I bought it in August. As I'm reviewing all my monthly purchases after wearing them twice, the verdict on the tee:

I really like it! I'm glad I bought it and as it's such a lightweight piece I'm sure I'll still be able to wear it often in spring. A good purchase. The only thing that I'm unsure about is the zips on the hem - still haven't figured out if they are for anything more than decoration! I've tried unzipping and tucking the front in, but the stiff metal zipper doesn't make that comfortable. Maybe they are just for decoration?Do you own any tops like this? How do you wear them with the zips?

Last worn: Ray-BanSeed heritage snood, grey zip detail tee, striped maxi skirt, black flats, MbMJ baby bag.

Here's what I wore to go for a walk with baby and Cooper:

ScarfAlexander McQueen magenta skull scarf in roses print
TeeLiving Doll stripe 3/4 sleeve top
SkirtJeanswest plain jersey black maxi skirt

BagMarc by Marc Jacobs pretty nylon Eliz-A-Baby bag

Another casual maxi skirt outfit to get out of the house for a bit of lunch and a walk. Tucked the long sleeve tee in this time. I really liked this outfit when I put it on in the morning, but I am not too impressed with it in the photo. Certainly kept me comfortable all day though, which is my main goal for outfits lately!

Long Sleeve Tops and Printed Maxi Skirts With Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC Bag

With winter here now in Queensland, it's time to start pulling out some of my cold weather pieces. Two very different colour schemes to share today, although these outfits follow the same formula of a long sleeved top and a printed maxi skirt, with a new-to-me Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC bag that the boys got me for Mother's Day.

What I wore:

monochrome wrap top with navy striped maxi skirt outfit for autumn school run | away from blue

navy stripe maxi skirt with Rebecca Minkoff 2012 sky grey mini MAC bag gold hardware | away from the blue

NecklaceZuriCollections blue polymer clay necklace
TopDorothy Perkins 3/4 sleeve wrap top
Skirt: Target navy side split maxi skirt
ShoesNew Balance white and blue sneakers
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff 2012 sky grey mini MAC bag

Why I wore it:

Couldn't resist going completely monochrome with this outfit! 😂 Blue marle long sleeved wrap top, navy blue striped maxi skirt and the blue Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC bag. Even a blue and gold necklace!

It's no surprise I loved this outfit, blue is my favourite colour. However I wasn't entirely happy with it when I left the house! Doing the school run it didn't warm up as much as I'd hoped and it was a pretty chilly outfit to wear when the wind picked up. Especially with the side splits in this maxi skirt. I normally keep it for warmer weather wear but thought I could squeeze in one more wear before winter truly arrived in Brisbane. Should have picked another skirt instead and left this for a warmer day. Or added a jacket.

Last worn: navy marle wrap top, clay bead necklace, navy stripe maxi skirt, New Balance. First time I've worn the mini MAC bag on the blog as it was a mother's day gift.

Other ways to wearnavy marle wrap top and pencil skirt, navy stripe maxi skirt and denim jacket.

Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC Bag Review:

What I wore:

teal henley and billabon red boho print maxi skirt with blue mini mac bag | awayfromtheblue

Rebecca Minkoff 2012 sky grey mini MAC bag with teal and red printed maxi skirt outfit | awayfromblue

awayfromtheblue Instagram | teal henley and red printed maxi skirt outfit with blue mini mac bag autumn school run style

Skirt: thrifted Billabong 'Don't Think Of It' bikini red printed maxi skirt
ShoesNew Balance white and blue sneakers
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff 2012 sky grey mini MAC bag

Why I wore it:

While my wardrobe has been firmly in the casual mum category with staying at home so much, I am feeling a bit bolder to try little things to change it up. The confidence is coming from social distancing and not spending enough time near or with anyone for them to form an opinion on my outfit!

This was an "I wonder if these pieces would go" combination I thought of when trying to come up with something different to wear.

I wouldn't normally wear red with this teal henley but as all I had to do this day was the school run I decided to give it a try. And I liked the combination of the teal and red together when I put ti on, I was worried it was too Christmas-y before I did, but I liked it when I wore it. Not sure if it was adding the blue mini MAC bag to the outfit or just my camera but the top and skirt together look very Christmas-y in the pic and the top a lot more green than teal! I still had fun trying something different though even if I wouldn't wear these two pieces together again. At least I was warmer in this outfit as it wasn't as cold!

Last worn: teal henley, feather necklace, red boho maxi skirt, New Balance (above), Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC bag (above).

Other ways to wear teal henley and jeans, red boho maxi skirt and band tee.

Perfect for pregnancy: teal henley in second trimester.

Printed Maxi Skirts Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

A long sleeve top can work well with a maxi skirt on a cooler day (although maybe not too cold like in the first pic!). With a printed maxi skirt a plain block colour top is good to try and you don't have to worry about prints clashing, so you can experiment with different colour combinations.

This post was scheduled in advance and I debated not posting it this week but decided to in the end. I've continued blogging through everything else this year. I think time to reflect on what is happening is needed, even if I don't really have the right words to say, or a platform that would make much of a difference. It's important to still say something, as the silence can be deafening to those who need support right now. So in my usual style I'm just adding a note to this post. I've also found people that have said it better than I ever could:

From a protest sign: "I understand that I'll never understand, but I stand with you."
From Archbishop Desmond Tutu: "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor".

Black Lives Matter and Aboriginal Lives MatterListen and learn and fight racism. Above all else, be kind.
