Maxi Dresses and Autumn Layers

Hope you all enjoy the Easter long weekend! If you're unable to make it to your regular church, you can always celebrate easter at Church Online no matter where you are in the world!

Although Autumn took a little longer to arrive in Brisbane than I'd hoped, it is nice to take advantage of the slightly cooler mornings and evenings and layer up my maxi dresses a little. Denim jackets and kimonos are ideal layering pieces for those in-between seasons when temperatures fluctuate through the day and you need things you can easily take off and on.

What I wore:

Autumn Denim jacket, JayJays feather print maxi dress, Rebecca Minkoff Love bag | AwayFromBlue

Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
Necklace: Nibbly Bits Wilma teething necklace in pale daffodil
DressJayJays feather print maxi dress
ShoesWittner 'Jasmarie' studded sandals
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey

Why I wore it:

Had a little bit of a busy morning rushing around trying to run errands and get organised for a playdate. Decided to wear this printed maxi dress as it was an easy, instant outfit and it's been a while since I wore this dress. Halfway through #6monthsWithoutShopping, I'm trying to make my wardrobe more interesting by picking things I haven't worn in a while.

I had a quick look through my blog archives and was surprised to find I hadn't actually worn this jacket and dress together before. I'm sure I have before I even had a blog, as these are really old pieces of my wardrobe. A printed maxi dress and denim jacket is such a great outfit idea when you need a little extra warmth.

Shoes: Wittner 'Jasmarie' studded sandals

Why I wore it:

After a few showery days I wanted to add another layer to this maxi dress as it was cooler, but couldn't decide which piece to wear. I considered the denim jacket I wore above, but wanted something soft as I was babywearing most of the day. I worried this lace kimono would be too 'busy' with the embroidery and bead embellishments on this maxi dress, but tried it on anyway and really liked the combination, I don't think it was too much in the end.

Some colourful accessories with the teething necklace and neon pink mini MAC bag to brighten up my outfit a little. We headed into the city to see some turtles hatching at the museum for part of Science Week in Brisbane.

It was really fascinating, especially for toddler T, who got to see turtles hatching up close after getting excited by a picture of it in one of his books. He got to pat a few turtles too. While we got there at the worst time and the line to get in was huge, the staff were good at providing updates and keeping everyone amused as we waited. It was an incredible experience and I'm so glad we did it.

How You can Wear It:

Autumn is the perfect time to get some use out of all of those light layering pieces like denim jackets and kimonos. A classic denim jacket and dress combination works well for spring too! It's a nice way to continue to wear your summer pieces for another season, just by adding an extra layer.

OneTeaspoon Hawks Denim Shorts in Spring: Two Ways to Wear

If you follow on instagram you'll know baby boy's in hospital. I still have pre-scheduled blog posts like this that will continue to be published, and he's just in as a precaution. We hope to be home for Christmas!

I picked up my first pair of OneTeaspoon shorts in a collaboration with Glue Store. They are a high-waist style that I wouldn't normally go for, but they are surprisingly comfortable on my mum-tum and I'm glad I gave the different style a try. In a classic black, they will be sure to be worn more over summer. I've shared two different ways to wear them below.

What I wore:

summer storm outfit OneTeaspoon hawks denim shorts polka dot cami cross body bag | Away From Blue

Rebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC, bracelet stack | Away From The Blue
CamiJeanswest 'Mia' cami in black
ShortsOneTeaspoon Hawks shorts in Fox black (C/O)
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagRebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC (on sale in metallic pink!)

Why I wore it:

Although it was spring when I wore this a couple weeks ago, this day was the hottest day of the season in Brisbane with summer-like temperatures. I wanted to wear as little as possible. Short shorts and a flowy cami was just what was needed when we did venture out of the air conditioning to grab groceries before the afternoon storm hit. The rain in the background was just a small shower before the big storm and the hail rolled in.

It's funny looking back and seeing that the last time I wore this cami I was using it to hide my early second trimester baby bump!

Last worn: polka dot cami, OneTeaspoon Hawks shorts, Havaianas, silver mini MAC bag.

Other ways to wearpolka dot cami and maxi skirt, OneTeaspoon Hawks shorts and tee, silver mini MAC bag with blue and green.

What I wore:

ShortsOneTeaspoon Hawks shorts in Fox black (C/O)
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagRebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC (on sale in metallic pink!)

Why I wore it:

This was another style challenge inspired outfit. The style challenge for #RuleBreakersClub was the 'forbidden pair' of double denim. As much as I love denim, double denim isn't a look I wear often. When I do attempt it, I like the denim shades to be as different as possible, so black shorts and a blue jacket work nicely.

Picked the red tee as it felt like a while since I last wore it. This was what I wore for another Christmas shopping trip. I feel like that's going to be the main activity I do in the run up to Christmas. I usually like to be more organised than I am at this stage!

November Purchases and Cyber Monday Sales

It feels like I just shared my October purchases, but we are nearly at the end of November already! If you are still Christmas shopping, I've included some Cyber Monday sale codes for you below along with my latest purchases. Many of the Black Friday sales I shared in my gift guide post are still active too!

What I Bought

I didn't buy much in November and stuck to trying to find things off of the clothing wishlist I shared last month. I ended up taking advantage of a Jeanswest sale and using a gift card I had to get two of the things off of my wishlist. Both the tank and shorts were things I'd been wanting for a while.

I was really lucky to have a partnership with Glue Store and recieved credit which I used to update my denim collection for Spring. I bought three things:

I wasn't sure if I should include the three items in this wrap up post or not, as they were items I received as part of a partnership. What do you think, do you want to see items like that in my monthly wardrobe updates? This is the first time it's happened in the 11 months I've being doing this type of post, so it won't be something that comes up a lot. I also got a maxi skirt from my mum as an early Christmas present I've been wearing frequently.

How I Wore It:

November purchases spring outfits | Away From Blue Blog

I'm really pleased with my purchases, and how much I've worn them. Everything got worn at least twice. I didn't spend much this month, using the gift card for most of my Jeanswest purchases and using the credit I was given for the other items. I have been focusing on buying gifts for others as Christmas approaches, and hoping for some clothing shaped presents or gift cards under the tree!

Cyber Monday Sales

As promised, a few Cyber Monday sale picks! In some cases these discounts are better than the Black Friday ones, so hopefully you can score that perfect item you've been wanting or save more money when buying Christmas gifts! Hurry though, a lot end tonight.

  • ASOS have 20% off everything with code 'GOGOGO'. If you're in the US use 'THANKFUL30' for 30% off. Everything means everything on site - including already reduced items!
  • Rebecca Minkoff has up to 75% off PLUS get 25% off your entire order when you spend $100 or more!

Happy shopping! How are you going with your Christmas list? I just have a couple more things to buy in-person, I did the last of my online shopping this weekend and I'm hoping everything arrives before Christmas! I need to make a start on wrapping next.

Navy Stripe Maxi Skirt 2 Ways with Blue and Purple

A few weeks ago I went out Christmas shopping with family. I took the opportunity to stop by a few stores and try on some clothes while someone else could wrangle the boys outside of the changerooms! I shared some of the shopping on my insta stories. As well as getting some gifts, I got a couple of things for myself.

When we reached Target I went straight for the maxi skirts and saw this pretty navy one. Luckily for me, my mum bought it for me for an early Christmas present! I was eager to wear it right away.

This was a great gift as I find the Target maxi skirts absolutely perfect. With comfortable elastic waists it's easy to get a good fit and the two I already own were some of my favourite pieces in pregnancy. Not sure about taller people as it looks more midi length on the website, but they are the perfect length for my petite self. They last too - the other two I have have been worn pretty regularly for 2 and a half years and across two pregnancies and they still look new. Really happy to be adding a third to my wardrobe.

What I wore:

denim jacket purple tank navy stripe maxi skirt Spring SAHM style | AwayFromBlue

metallic silver Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC bag | AwayFromTheBlue
SunniesRay-Ban new Wayfarers
Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
Necklace: Nibbly Bits Abacus teething necklace in pop
TankJeanswest Jenni basic singlet in Royal Lilac purple
Skirt: gifted Target navy side split maxi skirt
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagRebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC (on sale in metallic pink!)

Why I wore it:

I like blue and purple together so thought this tank would be great with the navy skirt. Added the denim jacket as it was a little cooler in the morning.

I have quite a large collection of these fitted tanks in many different colours but as I've mentioned before I'm not a fan of feeding in public in them as I feel a little too exposed. I'm trying to wear them on days like this, where I only have to be out for a little while between feeds. I popped out to do a little bit more Christmas shopping. Starting to get overwhelmed with how much there is to do to get ready - but so excited too as it will be Baby Boy's first Christmas.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarerdenim jacket, purple tank, Havaianas, metallic silver mini MAC. First time I've worn the skirt.

Other ways to wear: denim jacket and a maxi skirt, purple tank and a pencil skirt, silver mini MAC and a dress.

Why I wore it:

Unlike the purple tank above, this navy one is a special breastfeeding one and is the most discreet feeding top I have. It was perfect to wear for a specialist appointment at Mater in the city for Baby Boy, as I had to feed him in the waiting room. Wanted a big bag to carry all the files and things I needed for the appointment so my Louis Vuitton neverfull was ideal.

I thought this navy tank and skirt would be a nice pairing together. I really liked this monochrome combination. Even if the two shades of navy don't perfectly match!

The checkered print on the bag and the stripes on the skirt were a bit of a stretch to meet the "print and pattern" style challenge for #RuleBreakersClub on Instagram too.

Spring Essentials: Denim and Vans

Spring has to be one of the best seasons for fashion. You get to start shedding the winter layers, find more outfit options in your wardrobe and have the chance to wear all your denim. Unlike summer or winter, both shorts and jeans are perfect as the temperature fluctuates day to day.

I went shopping at Glue Store to add some more basics to my wardrobe for spring. I focused on finding some basic black pieces that would work with everything already in my wardrobe. I'm trying to stay away from blue denim but as a stay at home mum I'm in jeans most of the time so black seemed like a smart choice. I picked up a pair of jeans from Nobody Denim and shorts from OneTeaspoon, both Aussie brands that I'm sure even my readers outside Australia have heard of. I checked out a few options from Cheap Monday, Lee and Articles of Society too but settled on the two here.

You'll notice I'm wearing Vans in these outfits too! My sister is loyal to Vans while I've always stuck with my Converse. I thought I'd try Vans out for a change and picked up an all black pair. They go with everything and are perfect with my new black denim. They are comfortable and practical for running around with a baby and toddler. I'm the same size in Vans and Converse, no further conversion needed so that's good to know if you're considering either brand.

Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
Tank: Asos satin singlet in pink
Jeans: Nobody Denim Siren skinny super high-rise jeans in power black denim (C/O)
Shoes: Vans unisex old skool sneakers in black (C/O)
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff neon pink mini MAC

This is the kind of outfit that's perfect for cooler spring days - some bright colours and lighter layers with classic black jeans. These skinny jeans from Nobody Denim are incredible. They are quite long on my petite self but I rolled them up a couple of times to get them to the perfect length. Even cuffed, when paired with the black Vans they make my legs look super long! The high waist helps elongate my legs and it's comfortable with my mum-tum as the fabric has the perfect amount of stretch in it. This is my first pair of Nobody Denim but it won't be my last, I'm really impressed with these jeans. They are made locally in Melbourne too.

While the mornings and evenings are cooler a denim jacket is a great topper, and the bright pink tank and bag are nice and colourful for spring.

Tee: thrifted grey oversize tee
Shorts: OneTeaspoon Hawks shorts in Fox black (C/O)

As much as I love skinny jeans, there are some spring days - especially here in Brisbane - where it's too hot to contemplate jeans or even layers. The majority of my denim collection is packed away in warmer weather. A simple denim shorts and tee combo is a great go-to outfit on a hot spring day. And this was a hot one, forecast to be 34 degrees! We spent the day down the coast with my parents.

I added a little colour to my outfit with a bright Rebecca Minkoff bag as well but otherwise kept this to a pretty monochromatic colour scheme in contrast to the outfit above.

The shorts are the OneTeaspoon Hawks. I shared before that I was looking for a new pair of shorts and wanted something in a relaxed fit with a little bit of distressing but not too much. These were perfect. With the raw cuffed hem on these I think they will distress more as I wear and wash them which will be nice. You can see a better pic of the hems on my instagram. They have a high waist also, the feature that I love so much on the Nobody Denim skinny jeans. I stuck with my normal size in these, I was a little unsure which size to go for at first as it's my first pair of OneTeaspoon shorts but the size chart on the site was right, my usual size was the way to go.

Again I wore my Vans. They work just as well with shorts as they do with jeans. These are the "old skool sneakers" and they are such a classic style that as I mentioned above, work wonderfully with denim.

Are you a Vans fan? Do you pair yours with denim or branch out with more outfits?

This post, as always, has been written by me and includes all my own thoughts and opinions and styling. Some clothing was very generously provided by Glue Store.

Maxi Skirts, Denim Jacket and Navy Tops: Same But Different

Despite doing a style challenge on instagram, I haven't been too adventurous with my outfits lately, just enjoying wearing spring pieces like my kimonos or my denim jacket.

Most of the time when I group similar outfits together to post on the blog I've worn them a few days apart. In this case I ended up loving the combination of blue top, maxi skirt and denim jacket so much one day that I wore it again the very next day too.

What I wore:

Spring denim jacket and maxi skirt outfit for breastfeeding and coffee date | Away From The Blue

Cora wood watch JORD Rebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC | Away From The Blue
Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
Necklace: Nibbly Bits Abacus teething necklace in pop
TankMEV Britney bubble tank in mood indigo C/O Zibibo
Skirt: Target grey marle maxi skirt
Shoes: black slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch C/O JORD
BagRebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC (on sale in pink!)

Why I wore it:

The style challenge for the day was 'hair affair' which left me free to pick whatever I wanted to wear for a coffee date in the city with a friend. Went with a maxi skirt as I feel I've been wearing my jeans a lot lately!
This tank is perfect for a morning of babywearing as it's so easy to breastfeed baby boy in his carrier when wearing it. Wore this colourful teething necklace too as I think it works nicely against blue. Just like last time I went out for a meal, I found the teething necklace helpful to keep baby boy amused for a little while as we sat and chatted.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer, denim jacket, breastfeeding tank, grey maxi skirt, Havaianas, Rebecca Minkoff metallic mini MAC.

Other ways to weardenim jacket and double denim, breastfeeding tank and skinny jeans, grey maxi skirt worn postpartum, Rebecca Minkoff metallic mini MAC and maternity shorts.

TopAtmos & Here Arlene wrap top in navy (similar that ships internationally)
SkirtAT by Atmos&Here Mars striped maxi skirt
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagRebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC (on sale in red!)

Why I wore it:

The style challenge was 'mood booster'! I've spoken before about wearing bright accessories to boost my mood. Wearing my favourite colour (blue!) is another thing I use to boost my mood. I liked the outfit above so much I wanted to wear a navy top with that teething necklace again, and another maxi skirt. Although not a nursing piece, this wrap top is perfect for breastfeeding. Cheaper than buying a top marketed as a nursing top too ;) Example: $65 nursing wrap top, $38 'regular' wrap top.

Had a quiet morning, taking baby boy for another weekly weigh and then spent the day with my mum. She kindly babysat so I could use one of my Christmas massage vouchers, it was wonderfully relaxing and much needed!

This outfit was so similar to the one I wore the day before, but I really didn't mind as I enjoyed wearing them both so much.

Colourful Jeans, Balenciaga Tempete Day Bag

My brightly coloured jeans get worn most of the year, but they are definitely used most frequently in spring. It's a great cheerful way to add some colour to an outfit. To kick off spring I started playing along with two style challenges on Instagram, and the bright jeans worked nicely.

What I wore:

Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch C/O JORD
BagBalenciaga giant hardware Day bag in 2009 tempete

Why I wore it:

This was another one of those outfits that hit all the style prompts for the two style challenges. The prompts were 'thrifted and gifted' and 'it's for me'. Thrifted was achieved with the red jeans I scored in an opshop a while back, and gifted was this beautiful scarf my mum got me. I'm sad it will be worn less and less as the weather heats up, it's so cosy. Being jeans and a tee, it was simple and made me happy, so it met the 'it's for me' challenge too.

It actually ended up being such a warm day - when we were outside at playgroup I ditched the jacket and the scarf was taken off when I wasn't using it as a breastfeeding cover up.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer, denim jacket, striped tee, bird print scarf, skinny jeans, Converse, Balenciaga tempete day bag.

Why I wore it:

I found these purple jeans at last! I mentioned a while back that our partial packing up of things in preparation for moving house (that fell through) has made it difficult trying to find where all the non-maternity pieces in my wardrobe ended up. These jeans have been missing for such a long time, I last wore them a year ago. I'm pleased I've found them now. I like purple and blue together so wanted to try wearing the jeans with the navy tee, and I liked the combination.

I hadn't been sure what would meet the style challenges of 'tried something new' and 'tie one on', when I saw this twilly from my bestie. I've worn twillies in my hair before, but never tied one into a bow like this. I'm not sure this is an everyday look for me, it kept annoying me as I couldn't wear my sunnies on my head like I usually do! But it was fun to try something new, one of the reasons I participate in style challenges.

Ran a few errands in the morning and had my family over in the afternoon, a nice simple jeans and tee outfit was perfect for that.

Jeanswest Prima Skinny Jeans, Autumnal Tops and Balenciaga Tempete Day Bag

It's spring here in Brisbane so the weather is starting to warm up. I'm still finding myself wanting to wear my darker more autumnal colours - I tend to wear most colours year-round if the fabric is right. It's nice to be inspired by the style challenges I'm doing to add some little spring touches to my outfits with a denim jacket or kimono though, even if I didn't love both resulting outfits.

What I wore:

double denim skinny jeans and tee tartan scarf SAHM spring style | Away From Blue

Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
Scarf: blue tartan scarf

ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs black logo plaque ballet flats
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch C/O JORD
BagBalenciaga giant hardware Day bag in 2009 tempete

Why I wore it:

I wore this simple jeans and tee outfit for a busy morning. My plan was to take the boys out to a local book sale, get some groceries and come home and clean the house in preparation for having a friend over for dinner. Of course we were running late in the morning which put me behind for the rest of the day, but we did manage to score an entire cardboard box of books for $40 (which you might have seen on my instagram story) and my friend didn't mind being picked up a little late even though it was raining. One of those crazy hectic days where you have a relaxing evening and all your running about doesn't seem so stressful in the end.

The scarf was a bit of an afterthought as it was a little cooler, but I liked the way the colours looked against the burgundy tee. It worked for the 'in check' style challenge prompt on instagram. I picked the denim jacket as I'd wanted to wear it a few days before but didn't think it looked great with that outfit. I really liked it this time around, as the jeans are black denim I felt fine attempting the double denim look for the first time in a long time! Was perfect for the 'cuff stuff' style challenge theme too with the cuffed sleeves.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer, denim jacket, blue tartan scarf, burgundy tee, black Prima skinny jeans, ballet flats, Balenciaga tempte day bag.

Other ways to weardenim jacket and a maxi dress, tartan scarf and a graphic tee, burgundy tee and a maxi skirt, black Prima skinny jeans and boucle, ballet flats and a wrap dress, Balenciaga tempte day bag and printed kimono.

Why I wore it:

This was another big day! We had brunch by the bay, toddler T's swim lesson and dinner at my parents. Which involved some cookie decorating with toddler T and was a lot of fun. Again, I shared a bit of this on instagram stories.

Just thinking about it now as I write this post I'm realising I've finally hit that point where I'm managing to squeeze multiple trips and events into my day. A milestone for having two under 3, one of those things that seems impossible in the newborn days. I'm feeling happy about juggling two style challenges again too, and managing to hit so many (although not all!) of the prompts.

I knew I wanted to wear this comfy tank. The style challenge of 'man style' was kind of met with my Converse Chucks. I wasn't sure what to wear to meet the 'floral fantasy' prompt of the other style challenge when I saw this kimono in my wardrobe. This is an outfit fail - it doesn't look great. Even the skinny prima jeans can't cancel out the oddness of the voluminous tank and kimono together, it's not a combination I'll be repeating again. Despite that, I was happy wearing it. It felt super comfortable to wear and I really liked the navy and khaki colour combination!

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarers (above), navy cocoon kimono, khaki embroidered tank, Prima denim jeans, Converse, Balenciaga tempte day bag (above).

Other ways to wearnavy cocoon kimono and denim shorts, khaki embroidered tank and flares, Prima denim jeans and tall boots, Converse and a chambray skirt, Balenciaga tempte day bag and a printed maxi dress.
