Maxi Dresses and Denim Jackets: Easy Breastfeeding Outfits

When I want to look a little more pulled-together I tend to reach for a dress. Not all of my (many!) dresses are suitable for breastfeeding though. While pretty much any top can be breastfeeding friendly by pulling it up (with a nursing tank layered underneath for coverage if needed), you can't do that with a dress. It's nice to wear dresses still though.

Below are two maxi dress options that work perfectly for breastfeeding. One expensive, one opshop bargain. I didn't buy a lot of maternity clothes for any of my pregnancies and I'm happy I didn't have to spend a lot on dedicated nursing pieces for afterwards either.

What I wore:

AwayFromBlue | Mothers En Vogue nursing dress denim jacket easy breastfeeding outfit

AwayFromTheBlue | Purple Rebecca Minkoff mini MAB tote bag pink dress
SunniesRay-Ban new Wayfarers (30% off at Nordstrom!)
Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
NecklaceTai gold alphabet necklaces
DressMEV Havana maxi dress C/O Zibibo
Belt: Jeanswest black braided belt
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs metallic mouse flats (on sale in navy!)
BagRebecca Minkoff mini MAB tote in plum (on sale in pink!)

Why I wore it:

Wore this for an afternoon out with baby boy, toddler T and his grandmothers. I wanted to dress up a little bit, so this nursing friendly dress was a good choice. I know I say this almost every time I wear it, but this dress is amazing and has seen me through two pregnancies and afterwards. It is a pretty, easy piece to wear and I love the bright colour. It always makes me feel good when I wear it. I've worn it with a denim jacket before, I think it's a nice combination.

While it can be expensive buying a dress specifically for nursing, I'm glad I have this in my wardrobe and although it was C/O, if I'd paid full price for it I'd still be feeling like I was getting my money's worth.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer, denim jacket, braided belt, pink nursing dress, gold mouse flats, purple Rebecca Minkoff mini MAB.

Other ways to weardenim jacket and a maxi dress in winter, braided belt and a summer dress, pink nursing dress at 39 weeks pregnant, gold mouse flats and jeans, Rebecca Minkoff mini MAB and denim shorts.

ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs metallic mouse flats (on sale in navy!)
BagRebecca Minkoff mini MAB tote in plum (on sale in pink!)

Why I wore it:

Unlike the dress above, this is a regular non-maternity dress that I picked up at the op-shop as part of the 'fill a bag for $2' sale. It's a halterneck style with adjustable ties so it's easy to loosen for breastfeeding. Although you do need two hands to properly tie it back up again...I floundered a little bit with baby boy until I realised I wasn't going to achieve it one handed!

I'm glad I kept this in my wardrobe, after being unsure about needing multiple black maxi dresses before. Although not a dedicated nursing dress, and much cheaper, it was perfect for a busy day travelling and visiting some family. With the same jacket, shoes and purple bag as the outfit above, because I really wanted something simple and liked the combination.

Maxi Dresses in Spring and Steam Train Sunday

Maxi dresses are such an easy outfit - extremely comfortable, very little thought required, but they still look like you put some effort into what you're wearing.

After having lost my voice a few weeks back and feeling a bit under the weather, but with a busy weekend ahead, I pulled out more maxi dresses. I really wanted to stay in bed in my pyjamas, but this was the next best thing!

What I wore:

black maxi dress with denim jacket spring SHAM style birthday party outfit | AwayFromBlue

Roie Design and Yondale and Tiffany Bracelet Stack with black maxi dress, Rebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC | AwayFromTheBlue
Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
Necklace: Nibbly Bits Abacus teething necklace in pop
Dressblack Jeanswest halterneck maxi dress
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs silver tuxedo flats
Bracelets: the usual plus Roie Designs pearl, howlite and hematite beaded bracelets
BagRebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC

Why I wore it:

After a tough day the day before which involved only being able to whisper despite having two energetic and mischievous toddlers, I contemplated cancelling our plans on Saturday. With a first birthday party and leaving party to attend though I knew I couldn't let the boys miss out. Knowing I wasn't contagious, it didn't feel right not letting the boys spend time with their friends. It was quite a sad farewell, one of my friends is moving away and our children have grown up together, her two girls are similar ages to my two boys.

I like maxi dresses and denim jackets together, especially for spring, so I repeated the outfit formula again. The colorful silicone teething necklace broke up the monochrome outfit a bit and was just enough of a pop with the black maxi dress and silver bag and ballet flats.

Last worn: denim jacket, black maxi dress, bow detail flats, Rebecca Minkoff silver mini MAC.

Other ways to wear: denim jacket worn 30 waysblack maxi dress and kimono, bow detail flats and wrap dress, Rebecca Minkoff silver mini MAC.

Perfect for pregnancy: denim jacket and third trimester bump, maxi dress in second trimester, mini MAC in third trimester.

ShoesWalnut Melbourne 'Ava' black lizard ballet flats (also available in silver)
BagRebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC

Why I wore it:

I was upset to be feeling unwell on this day as we had been looking forward to it for months! Toddler T loves trains but has never actually been on one. We decided to take him along to Steam Train Sunday as a surprise. I've included a little video below. The train does a loop around the city for about an hour, and he loved every bit of it!

We got there early to the station to watch the train come in and he was so excited, especially when we said he could go for a ride on it. It's definitely worth it if you're in Brisbane! You get to walk around the train carriage, between the carriages, and to talk to some of the staff who can tell you more about the train and the history. Fun way to spend a morning, and toddler T spent quite a few days afterwards telling everyone about his trip!

Again I wanted something easy, but also to get a little dressed up as it was a big family day out. This trusty pink maxi dress was a good solution. I tend to wear it pretty similarly every time now, so I tried something a little different with the blue Coach silk scarf as a belt instead of my usual Louis Vuitton bandeau. While I liked the colour combination of this, I did find this scarf slid around a lot more than my bandeau and I don't think I'll pair these pieces together again.

One thing to note with steam train Sunday is the soot. We were nearer the middle of the train and had the window open all the time. With trips out onto the walkway between the carriages as well, we did get a little sooty. Nothing a quick bath couldn't clear up afterwards though.

Last worn: grey cardigan, Coach silk scarf, Mothers En Vogue maxi dress, black ballet flats, Rebecca Minkoff silver mini MAC (above).

Other ways to weargrey cardigan and skinny jeans, Coach silk scarf tied on a bag, Mothers En Vogue maxi dress for dinner with friends, black ballet flats and wrap dress, Rebecca Minkoff silver mini MAC and printed jeans.

Maxi Dresses Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

Maxi dresses are instant outfits. If it's a little cooler, add a simple layer like a denim jacket or a neutral cardigan. While it takes very little effort, a maxi dress looks pulled together enough for a party and casual enough for a trip on the train.

Maternity Dresses! Maxi Dress Baby Shower Outfit, Wrap Dress For The Office

Here's what I wore on Sunday:

Necklace: gold heart shaped necklace layered with vintage gold chain
DressMEV Havana maxi dress C/O Zibibo
Belt: Kmart thin gold glitter belt
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual plus Disney Couture Winnie the Pooh bangle, Hermes pink clic clac
BagMiu Miu cammeo studded clutch bag

Had a busy Sunday! After Saturday's trip to Australia Zoo, I had another luxurious pregnancy massage booked in the morning to get rid of all of the anticipated aches and pains from all of the walking around. Then it was a spot of shopping with my sister, the baby shower at my parents, and a BBQ dinner at the in-laws.

The baby shower was really fun. Baby got so many gifts! We had put together a little registry advising people that gifts weren't necessary, and suggesting a few little things if people wanted to buy something. So many people got us things, it was really unexpected and I got a little teary opening presents.

I'd initially been against the idea of a baby shower, but warmed up to it more during the pregnancy. They aren't very common in Australia. It was such a lovely way to spend Mother's Day though, and I'm very thankful to my mum and sister who put so much effort into the party. Spending time with friends, family and with my mother and mother in law celebrating the impending arrival of their grandchild was really special. Hope you all had a lovely Mother's Day too. :)

Last worn: purple maternity maxi dress, gold glitter belt, Havaianas, Miu Miu studded cammeo bag.

Here's what I wore to work today:

Dress: Soon Maternity 'Madeline' grey print wrap dress
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs studded mouse flats in grey
Bracelets: the usual plus enamel coated Marc By Marc Jacobs Katie bracelet

After a busy weekend, simplicity was needed, so went with this Soon Maternity wrap dress for work again. Made getting ready easy, and was perfect for the many meetings I had.

Shocked to search the blog and find that I haven't carried this bag for 5 months - I need to get better at rotating through my handbags. It's a little tricky now that they are all stored in boxes under the bed though, bending down to get things is not the easiest manoeuvre when pregnant, haha!

Pregnancy Capsule Wardrobe: 22 Items for Third Trimester Maternity Wear

Dressing in pregnancy is a fun challenge as the baby bump grows and changes every day! In order to simplify things this time around, I implemented a third trimester capsule wardrobe.

Why I Made a Pregnancy Capsule Wardrobe:

  • I've never tried a capsule wardrobe before (unless you count living out a suitcase for travel).
  • The baby bump was outgrowing my current wardrobe faster than I anticipated this time around.
  • I didn't have the luxury of time that I had in my first pregnancy to try on lots of outfit options each night and find things that still fit. (Or I didn't have the energy to do so after spending time with my toddler!)
  • The summer heat and humidity (that continued well into autumn in Brisbane) left me less inspired to try new things.
  • I had lots of great maternity pieces I wanted to wear as much as possible to make sure I got my money's worth.

Third Trimester Capsule Wardrobe in Video Form:

Below is a video covering the pieces in my capsule wardrobe, how I wore them, and my general thoughts about the experience.

The 22 Items In My Pregnancy Capsule Wardrobe:

A Few Notes On My 22 Items:

I didn't include accessories (scarves or bags or shoes) in this count. I also didn't include 'completer' pieces like my printed kimonos or blazers. I freely grabbed these from my wardrobe as and when I wanted them.

The pieces included were suitable for my part time office job, as well as being perfect for a stay at home mum the rest of the week.

Not everything was a maternity piece, I used pieces from my regular non-maternity wardrobe too.

There were a few times at the start of the third trimester where I wore pieces that weren't included in the capsule, but after realising they were getting uncomfortable I stuck to my capsule wardrobe for the majority of the time.

The 22 items I had were great over summer (and multiple heatwaves!), but would need to be changed for cooler weather. Simple things like swapping the maternity denim shorts for jeans instead, and some long sleeved tops and fewer tanks.

Outfit Combinations from a Pregnancy Capsule Wardrobe:

Some photos of my favourite third trimester outfits from my capsule wardrobe to give you an idea of how I wore all the pieces in the third trimester. Not an exhaustive list, as 3 months worth of daily outfit photos would be a pretty big post! You can see all the outfits I wore in the third trimester here.

For my first capsule wardrobe experience, it was pretty fun, and I hope that it gives you some ideas or inspiration to try your own capsule wardrobe if you've often thought about it too.

Colourful Maxi Dresses, Blue Balenciaga Tempete Day Bag and ABA

I've been wearing my maxi dresses a lot lately! They've just been the easiest option as they are instant outfits. I have a few black ones but the bright and colourful ones definitely get more wear.

This Balenciaga tempete day bag is one of my favourites too. It looks great with pink or worn in a monochrome blue outfit. Sharing it with both below, and talking a little more about my experiences with the Australian Breastfeeding Association.

What I wore:

Mothers En Vogue Maxi Dress Breastfeeding and Volunteering SAHM Style Outfit | AwayFromBlue

Necklace: Nibbly Bits Abacus teething necklace in pop

Belt: Kmart thin gold glitter belt
ShoesRebecca Minkoff Georgina studded gladiator sandals in blush (on sale, 44% off!)
BagBalenciaga giant hardware Day bag in 2009 tempete

Why I wore it:

If you follow my insta stories, you'll know it was a big day for me when I wore this! I had the chance to help out at the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) stall at the baby expo. While I'm still on maternity leave from my office job, it was nice to have a little bit of 'work' for the day for something different, especially as I waited for my re-application for Church Online to be approved so I could get back to working there.

I'm not the best at public speaking (my youtube channel is a way for me to practice!) and I don't like talking in a group or crowd situation, but it was nice being able to talk one-on-one to the people at the expo who stopped by the stall and tell them a little more about the ABA.

It was bittersweet meeting so many people who had a similar experience that I did. So many people didn't breastfeed their eldest as much as they had wanted to (for various reasons) and so were looking for some support or information to reach their goals the second time around. One of the breastfeeding counselors I worked with on the day was the same lady who had answered that exact query for me a little over a year before when I was pregnant with Baby Boy! She was wonderful and it was good being able to refer people onto her when they had questions outside of membership that I couldn't answer.

Hubby and the boys came to the expo in the morning with me and then after lunch I went to help out at the stand when the boys went home. This nursing maxi dress was a pretty and practical outfit, with the added benefit of my teething necklace generating a lot of enquiries from people. Although I hadn't known it beforehand, we had a little shop within the stall with teething necklaces for sale for fundraising. I showed the selection to a few people. This Balenciaga day bag easily held my water bottle and things inside while sitting in a corner of the stall too.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer, pink maxi dress, gold glitter belt, gladiator sandals, Balenciaga tempete day bag.

Other ways to wearpink maxi dress at 39 weeks, gold glitter belt and Aztec print, gladiator sandals worn 30 ways, Balenciaga tempete day bag and red skinny jeans.

Why I wore it:

This was another ABA-related outfit! Blue everything to meet the 'matchy matchy' style challenge on Intagram. Except the black and tan sandals. Sometimes I think I'd like blue sandals...I already have a few colourful flats I don't wear nearly enough though. I've worn this Balenciaga day bag together with the maxi dress before, it's a great combination.

Wore this to head out to the local ABA mother's group. The meeting topic wasn't one that was particularly relevant to me as I'm past the newborn stage, but it was good to get out and have some morning tea and a chat with the other mums.

In the afternoon we popped out to grab a few quick groceries too. While maxi dresses can feel a little more formal (and I wear them for evenings out), they are so comfortable and easy to wear that I wear them for everyday too, no special occasions needed.

Colourful Maxi Dresses Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

Don't be afraid to wear bright accessories with a bright outfit. You can pick complimentary colours like pink and blue, or go monochrome and match your bag to your outfit for an easy, fail-safe match.

If you're pregnant or a new mum or both, I'd suggest checking out your local Australian Breastfeeding Association group. You can go to one without becoming a member, if you want to see what it's like first and how good the cakes are. In my experience though, the cake and the conversations are well worth the small $70 annual membership fee. 😂 Not a sponsored post, just wanted to share more about a group that's been a large part of my life this past year.

Rebecca Minkoff Love Bag and Casual and Dressy Festive Second Trimester Outfits

Two very different pregnancy outfits with the same bag. A dressier one for an evening out, and a casual one with shorts for daytime. You can see I'm a little behind with blogging as I wore one of these outfits on Christmas eve!

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Second Trimester Dinner Outfit Purple Maxi Dress RM Love Bag

AwayFromTheBlue | Mixed metal bracelet stack Rebecca Minkoff charcoal grey Love cross body bag
NecklaceTai gold alphabet necklace layered with Tiffany diamonds by the yard necklace
DressMEV Havana maxi dress C/O Zibibo
Belt: Kmart thin black glitter belt
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs silver tuxedo flats
Bracelets: the usual plus silver charm bracelet, Disney Couture Winnie the Pooh bangle
Bag:  Rebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey (on sale in emerald!)

Why I wore it:

Wore this out to a family birthday dinner. I've mentioned before that this dress is one of those maternity pieces that always makes me feel good, it was the perfect option for an evening out and getting a little dressed up.

The style challenge for the day was 'big hair don't care', but messy waves are as 'big' as I can get my hair to be. Luckily I was having a good hair day to take the close up for Instagram, ha!

You can't really see my shoes very well, they are clearer on Instagram, but this is the second time they've been worn on the blog. I'm trying to be more thoughtful with what I buy and reviewing everything after I've bought it twice, so my purchase review:

I really like the look of these shoes. I had a pair of cheap Rubi shoes silver ballet flats I'd been missing ever since I wore them to the ground, so was happy to spot this silver pair of Marc by Marc Jacobs flats in the Shopbop sale (with an extra 25% off!) right before Christmas. The only problem I have with these flats is that they seem a little tighter than the other Marc Jacobs flats I have. Not sure how much of that is due to pregnancy feet swelling and the crazy swelling because of the humidity over summer though! I'm hoping they relax a little the more I wear them. Overall, a great purchase as I've been missing a pair of silver flats, just not as comfortable as my other pairs quite yet.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer, Mothers En Vogue maxi dress, black glitter belt, Marc Jacobs tuxedo ballet flats, Rebecca Minkoff Love Bag.

Other ways to wearmaxi dress for a Christmas party, silver ballet flats and a black dress, Rebecca Minkoff Love Bag and skinny jeans.

Where to buy the Rebecca Minkoff Love bag:

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Festive Santa Christmas Tee Aussie Summer Maternity 2nd Trimester outfit

AwayFromTheBlue | Silver and turquoise tiffany bracelet stack Rebecca Minkoff quilted Love cross body bag
Tee: festive glitter Santa tee
ShortsJeanswest Georgie maternity boyfriend shorts (available in non-maternity also)
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual plus turquoise and silver beaded bracelet set
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey (on sale in sapphire!)

Why I wore it:

My long overdue to be posted Christmas eve outfit! It's a tradition in the family to spend the day doing something crafty for Christmas, baking and decorating cookies, and watching Christmas movies. Of course, while we do this, we wear our festive glitter tees that my sister bought us one year. Met the 'holiday glitz' style challenge nicely! Usually I wear some Christmas bracelets too, but I completely forgot about them this year. I had picked them out and set them aside, but in the hurry of getting everything and everyone ready to go to my parent's place I forgot to put them on. There's always next year!

It's the second wear for this blue printed kimono too, so my purchase review:

I picked up two kimonos in the Asos sale, this one being one I was sure I'd love, and the other I wasn't 100% sure would look good, but wanted to give it a try anyway. Surprisingly, I've gone for the other one more. I do love the colour of this (of course, it's blue!) but it doesn't seem to be worn as much as my other kimono. I'm confident it will still get a lot of wear in my wardrobe though, so it's staying. It's just interesting how the piece I thought I'd love the most from my order is being worn the least! Even after a year and a half of looking at my spending habits I still surprise myself.

I like how the Rebecca Minkoff love bag goes equally well with a dress to go out for dinner, or casually with denim shorts. It works in both of these outfits as it's a great all-rounder bag!

I have a video review on my youtube channel for it too:

Last worn: blue printed kimono, Christmas Santa glitter tee, Jeanswest maternity denim shorts, Havaianas, Rebecca Minkoff Love bag (above).

Christmas Outfits! Casual Christmas Eve, Maxi Dress for the Big Day

A little late, sharing what I wore on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Also sharing my December purchases. I'm behind in sharing my purchases as well as being behind with my outfits! I was really lucky to get a lot over Christmas, so I didn't buy too many things for myself, but I couldn't resist picking up a little something for myself in the Asos sale and the Iconic boxing day sale.

Here's what I wore on Christmas Eve:
A photo posted by Mica (@awayfromblue) on
Top: festive glitter Santa tee
ShortsJeanswest denim cuff shorts
Bracelets: the usual plus Christmas bow bracelet (with bells!), and red green and silver bangles

Completely forgot to get some blog photos of my Christmas even outfit! So sharing this little instagram family pic instead. Even though baby T wasn't in the mood for smiling ;)

It's become a yearly tradition to wear our novelty tees and make and decorate some Christmas cookies together. We then spend the next few days eating all the cookies....so delicious. The perfect outfits for a day spent getting Christmas mani/pedis, trying (and failing!) to dress Cooper up in his Christmas antlers, watching Christmas movies, decorating and eating cookies, and visiting the local Christmas lights displays.

The style dare for the day was 'baubles', so our matching ribbon and bell bracelets, as well as my glittery Santa tee, seemed quite fitting!

Last worn: novelty Santa tee, denim shorts.

Here's what I wore on Christmas day:
Aussie Christmas Day Mothers En Vogue Nursing Breastfeeding Maxi dress
DressMEV Havana maxi dress C/O Zibibo
Belt: Kmart thin gold glitter belt
Shoes: none in the pic! Barefoot most of the day, but wore Asos 'five star' leather sandals out in the evening.
Bracelets: the usual plus charm bracelet and Disney Couture Winnie the Pooh bangle

The benefit of having a small baby on Christmas day - I was able to take a photo in front of the tree with all of the presents without ruining baby T's morning, haha! It was baby's first Christmas, and the first time we have hosted Christmas lunch. Last Christmas was wonderful when we had the excitement of sharing our pregnancy news with the family, but having baby T ripping into all of his presents on Christmas day this year was even better. We are very lucky, and he is a very spoiled little boy, so many gifts! We had to work our way through them with a few nap and meal breaks in between!

Between cooking my first Christmas lunch, feeding baby and opening all of our gifts, I just wanted something simple and easy to wear. We went out to visit more family in the evening also, so I wanted to look appropriate for that too, without having to worry about changing my outfit. This maternity/nursing dress was the perfect choice, although I did wish I hadn't worn the belt a few times during the day, I was worried about it scratching baby sometimes. With family helping to entertain baby and preparing some side dishes, we managed to have a great day and a lovely lunch. I was pleased my first Christmas meal went so well - everyone said it was delicious, and as it was cooked with baby T in mind, he enjoyed his tiny little portion too!

Last worn: purple maxi dress, gold belt.

December Purchases

I bought a few things in December - more than I expected to buy, but I think I did okay considering all of the great sales there were! As I do every month, I'm sharing my purchases on the blog so it holds me accountable to actually use and enjoy those purchases. I review everything I buy after 2 wears so I can see if it was a winner or not, and use that information as lessons for future purchases. You can read more about my goals and why I'm doing this here. I think it's really helped my spending in 2014!

5 clothes/accessories purchases in December. Only 1 was a planned purchase, the rest were impulse buys.

Asos 'five star' leather sandals (to replace sandals I got rid of)
Atmos&Here 'Florida' tank in Aztec print
Atmos&Here 'Lola' swing dress in Aztec print (returned)
Atmos&Here 'Isla' ruffle cami in floral print
Atmos&Here 'Amalphi' luxe grey tee

Third Trimester Pregnancy Outfit Inspiration: 55 Outfit Ideas

Third trimester pregnancy dressing comes with it's own set of challenges! A lot of the regular wardrobe options that could be worn in the second trimester are outgrown in the third trimester, reducing the outfit possibilities and making getting dress rather uninspiring.

For my recent pregnancy, I implemented a third trimester pregnancy capsule wardrobe to try make it a little more fun.

The third trimester is definitely the time to repeat outfits that make you look and feel good, and to do so unashamedly! Find things that work for you and wear them as many times as you like. I've included 55 outfit ideas for the third trimester below, from both of my pregnancies. You can click on the links under the images to view more info about them.

Office Outfits:

In the third trimester, I still wore my ASOS maternity pencil skirts often, but the standout pieces were my wrap dresses. They were such an easy outfit that always fit the growing bump and never failed to look good. I wore wrap dresses a lot! I was able to find some regular non-maternity dresses in my wardrobe that still accommodated the baby bump too.
