Postpartum Outfits: Maxi Dress, Maxi Skirt and Cross Body Bags

A mix of outfits - slightly dressier outfit with a maxi dress for a birthday dinner, and a more casual maxi skirt outfit to run errands and do the day care drop off / pick-up.

What I wore:

Away From Blue | easy postpartum style breastfeeding friendly nursing maxi dress LV speedy bag

AwayFromTheBlue | pink maxi dress Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs black logo plaque ballet flats
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

I adore this maxi dress, I really do! It's a maternity/nursing dress, and I wore it heavily in the second and third trimesters of both pregnancies, as well as wearing it post-baby too. It was the last pregnancy outfit I got photos of for the blog. It's nice to wear it again without the bump, and appreciate the ease of breastfeeding in it! In the early weeks, your wardrobe needs to accommodate your changing postbaby body as well as being easy to pull up or down or sideways to allow for easy breastfeeding too while you and baby master the art.

Wore this out to a family birthday dinner.  I'd usually pick a clutch or smaller bag, but I had all my stuff in the speedy bag from the last time I wore it and didn't have the energy to swap out for an evening bag I'd have to juggle with a newborn and toddler. No extra accessories either, just a simple pull on and go outfit.

Last worn: Mothers En Vogue maxi dress, Marc Jacobs ballet flats, Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere.

Other ways to wearpink maxi dress and LV neverfull, Marc Jacobs ballet flats with black and grey, Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere and denim shorts.

What I wore:

Away From Blue | monochrome black post baby maxi skirt outfit red cross body bag

AwayFromTheBlue | Rebecca Minkoff unlined saddle bag in cherry red printed maxi skirt
SunglassesRay-Ban new Wayfarers
TeeAtmos&Here rolled sleeve oversize tee in black (also in grey)
Skirt: Izabel London Aztec print maxi skirt (C/O)
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs black logo plaque ballet flats
BagRebecca Minkoff unlined saddle bag in cherry red (new purchase)

Why I wore it:

I finally swapped my handbags over! I wore my Balenciaga day bag for a while post baby as that's the bag I had everything in when I went into labour. It was a bag that was easy to continue using while hubby had some time off from work to help us settle in. Now it's just me and the boys, a cross body bag like the Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere I wore above is an essential to keep my hands free. I'd had my eye on this saddle bag at Shopbop for a while and with the recent friends and family sale it was the perfect time to buy it.

It's a great size, so easy to wear when spending the day with two under 2, and really pops against a monochrome black outfit like I've worn it here. A nice easy outfit to do the day care drop off / pick up and a chance to wear my new bag.

As it's the second and third times I've worn my Marc by Marc Jacobs black logo plaque ballet flats, and I'm trying to reflect on everything I buy after wearing it twice to make sure I'm making thoughtful purchases, my purchase review:

I have a few pairs of Marc by Marc Jacobs flats now. They are comfortable, look cute and are easy to pick up on sale, just like I got these ones. I have this same style in silver so it was an easy choice to get it in black too when they were reduced and available in my size. I'm really pleased with them. Although I already have a pair of black ballet flats, I tend to favour neutral coloured shoes so I know I'll get a lot of wear out of these. Happy I bought them.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarers, black tee, printed maxi skirt, black ballet flats (above). First time I've worn the saddle bag as it is a recent purchase.

Other ways to wearblack tee and printed jeans, printed maxi skirt layered up for winter, black ballet flats and a grey maxi skirt

Baby's Arrival and Postpartum Hospital Style

Thank you all for your sweet comments and congratulations on the arrival of our second beautiful baby boy. Just like I did when baby T was born, thought I'd do a little wrap-up post here for those who don't follow me on instagram.

Baby boy had a very speedy arrival into the world! Baby T's birth was fast for a first time but at least then we had time to finalise the admission paperwork before things really got started. This time around I was answering the admission questions with my newborn baby in my arms! I'd been regularly waking for the past week or so with contractions around 3 am that eventually stopped every time, so I wasn't sure if this was another false alarm at first, and stayed for a while at home.

I foolishly thought that the midwife was just being encouraging when we arrived and she suggested that it wouldn't be long before baby arrived. We actually made it to hospital just in time. I took her a little more seriously when I had to start pushing and she reassured me that they could deliver the baby themselves if the on-call obstetrician didn't arrive in time. He did. Just! While baby surprised us all and arrived before my OB had returned from her holidays, the lead midwife was the same one who had helped us deliver baby T, so it was really special having her there.

Wanted to share my 'first days with a newborn' outfits that I posted on instagram. To show that you that everyone's different post-baby and you shouldn't set overly high expectations on yourself. Just relax and enjoy your baby! They don't care what you wear, they just want lots of love and cuddles.

There were a few comments left on the blog, especially near the end of the third trimester, where people commented that they were surprised I wasn't wearing trackie dacks/sweats/joggers or pyjamas in my pregnancy. Part of that was having the third trimester capsule wardrobe to make dressing easy, and also because I knew that the comfy clothes would become my 'uniform' in the newborn days. In pregnancy you want to be comfortable yet you still have some energy to put into picking nice outfits. With a newborn, your focus is on them only. Although you might try find clean clothes to wear at least, style is not a priority!

What I wore:

Singlet: Best and Less red stripe breastfeeding singlet
PantsJuicy Couture original drawstring pant in 'Silver Lining'
Bracelets: the usual

Why I wore it:

This was my 'fancy' outfit for visits from extended family. I packed and wore my pyjamas most of the time in hospital, but kept a clean nursing singlet and pair of trackie dacks for when extended family members came by to say hello and meet baby. In the early days with a newborn, comfort is key, so this is as 'pulled together' as I looked.

Last worn: trackie dacks. (Can't find a pic of this singlet on the blog, although it's an old one).

What I Packed in My Hospital Bag (Second Time Around)

What I wore:

JacketNew Look Petite print kimono (on sale, 70% off!)
NecklaceTai gold alphabet necklace
TankJeanswest Carla maternity cut out tank (non-maternity version)
ShortsJeanswest maternity rolled up shorts
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual

Why I wore it:

This was what I wore to take baby home from hospital, and also what I wore while I was in labour! I always lay my clothes out the night before, so when I went into labour in the early hours of the morning I thankfully had some clothes to grab. I didn't want to be walking through the main hospital in my pyjamas!

I was pleased I'd taken the time at home to put some clothes on. When we got to the hospital the contractions were so strong and fast as I'd hit transition in the car. It was drawing a lot of attention as I had to keep stopping as we walked to concentrate on getting through every contraction. They really shouldn't have the maternity ward at the back of the hospital...I lost count of how many staff members offered hubby a wheelchair to get me to the birth suite!

It was nice to have some 'normal' clothes with me to change into to take baby boy home too, although as soon as we got home it was back to pyjamas again ;)

Last worn: blue kimono, maternity tank, denim shorts, Havaianas.

Singlets, Shorts and Kimonos: Autumn SAHM Style at 39 Weeks Pregnant

Another pregnancy OOTD post! While baby has arrived, I've got a few more pregnancy outfits scheduled to share on the blog. I'm at home enjoying the newborn cuddles and only venturing out when we absolutely have to. You can see my new mum 'style' on instagram.

Autumn in Brisbane didn't bring the cool change it usually does, so my autumn pregnancy style has been pretty much the same as my summer pregnancy style - maternity shorts, singlets, and printed kimonos!

What I wore:

Away From Blue | 39 weeks pregnant autumn outfit navy floral kimono black tank denim shorts

AwayFromTheBlue | Mulberry regular Alexa bag in foggy grey
SunglassesRay-Ban new Wayfarers
NecklaceHouse of Harlow sunburst necklace in silver and grey (on sale here!)
SingletJeanswest maternity tank in black
Shorts:  Jeanswest Georgie maternity boyfriend shorts (available in non-maternity also)
Shoes: black slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual plus Roie Designs black leather Swarovski beaded wrap bracelet
BagMulberry regular Alexa bag in foggy grey

Why I wore it:

I loved how well the Mulberry Alexa bag went with the colours of this outfit! And as I've mentioned before, this simple outfit formula of singlet, shorts and kimono makes me feel happy and comfortable each time I wear it.

Wore this to run a few errands and attend my obstetrician appointment in the afternoon, not an overly busy day.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarers, floral print kimono, black maternity tank, boyfriend denim shorts, Havaianas, Mulberry Foggy grey Alexa bag.

Other ways to wearfloral print kimono and skinny jeans, black maternity tank and a maxi skirt, boyfriend denim shorts and laceMulberry Foggy Grey Alexa with pink and grey.

Where to buy the Mulberry Alexa bag:

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Third Trimester maternity tank & Shorts, navy kimono and lilac bag

AwayFromTheBlue | Mulberry regular foggy grey Alexa lilac bag with blue outfit
JacketNew Look Petite print kimono (on sale, 70% off!)
Necklace: Eye Candy LA 'Sasha' statement necklace
SingletJeanswest maternity tank in white
ShortsJeanswest maternity rolled up shorts
Shoes: slim gold Havaianas
Bracelets: the usual plus silver and turqoise beaded bracelet set and old blue bead bracelets
BagMulberry regular Alexa bag in foggy grey

Why I wore it:

Wore this to attend my first Australian Breastfeeding Association meeting. With all the craziness when toddler T was born (and being without a car for a while) I had never gotten around to signing up, so I figured I'd best give it a go before baby was born this time. It's always good to make new mummy friends too.

Kept with my simple fail-safe outfit formula like I've worn above as I'd be going to a new place and meeting new people I'd only spoken to online before. For a little confidence boost it's nice to be happy with your outfit.

Last worn: navy printed kimono, white maternity tank, bermuda denim shorts, Havaianas, Mulberry Foggy Grey Alexa (above).

Other ways to wearnavy printed kimono with a green top, white maternity tank and a pencil skirt, bermuda denim shorts and a red bag, Mulberry Foggy grey Alexa bag in the office.

Pregnancy Capsule Wardrobe: 22 Items for Third Trimester Maternity Wear

Dressing in pregnancy is a fun challenge as the baby bump grows and changes every day! In order to simplify things this time around, I implemented a third trimester capsule wardrobe.

Why I Made a Pregnancy Capsule Wardrobe:

  • I've never tried a capsule wardrobe before (unless you count living out a suitcase for travel).
  • The baby bump was outgrowing my current wardrobe faster than I anticipated this time around.
  • I didn't have the luxury of time that I had in my first pregnancy to try on lots of outfit options each night and find things that still fit. (Or I didn't have the energy to do so after spending time with my toddler!)
  • The summer heat and humidity (that continued well into autumn in Brisbane) left me less inspired to try new things.
  • I had lots of great maternity pieces I wanted to wear as much as possible to make sure I got my money's worth.

Third Trimester Capsule Wardrobe in Video Form:

Below is a video covering the pieces in my capsule wardrobe, how I wore them, and my general thoughts about the experience.

The 22 Items In My Pregnancy Capsule Wardrobe:

A Few Notes On My 22 Items:

I didn't include accessories (scarves or bags or shoes) in this count. I also didn't include 'completer' pieces like my printed kimonos or blazers. I freely grabbed these from my wardrobe as and when I wanted them.

The pieces included were suitable for my part time office job, as well as being perfect for a stay at home mum the rest of the week.

Not everything was a maternity piece, I used pieces from my regular non-maternity wardrobe too.

There were a few times at the start of the third trimester where I wore pieces that weren't included in the capsule, but after realising they were getting uncomfortable I stuck to my capsule wardrobe for the majority of the time.

The 22 items I had were great over summer (and multiple heatwaves!), but would need to be changed for cooler weather. Simple things like swapping the maternity denim shorts for jeans instead, and some long sleeved tops and fewer tanks.

Outfit Combinations from a Pregnancy Capsule Wardrobe:

Some photos of my favourite third trimester outfits from my capsule wardrobe to give you an idea of how I wore all the pieces in the third trimester. Not an exhaustive list, as 3 months worth of daily outfit photos would be a pretty big post! You can see all the outfits I wore in the third trimester here.

For my first capsule wardrobe experience, it was pretty fun, and I hope that it gives you some ideas or inspiration to try your own capsule wardrobe if you've often thought about it too.

Rebecca Minkoff Canary Yellow Swing Bag, Jeanswest Maternity Tops and Denim Shorts

Baby has arrived, but I've got a few more pregnancy outfits scheduled to share on the blog. It gives me a chance to enjoy the newborn cuddles and adjust to life with two under 2!

Decided to carry my Rebecca Minkoff swing bag for a while, as I love the bright yellow colour. It looks especially good with denim, another excuse to wear my maternity denim shorts.

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Autumn 38 weeks pregnant outfit printed kimono maternity shorts singlet RM Swing bag

AwayFromTheBlue | Rebecca Minkoff Swing bag in canary yellow silver black bracelet stack
Jacket:  Somedays Lovin' Yakuza print kimono (on sale!)
Necklace: Happiness Boutique turquoise and coral pendant necklace (C/O)
TankJeanswest maternity tank in black
ShortsJeanswest Georgie maternity boyfriend shorts (available in non-maternity also)
Shoesslim gold Havaianas
Bracelets: the usual plus old beaded black bracelet stack
BagRebecca Minkoff Swing bag in canary yellow

Why I wore it:

When I got this kimono, I knew that the yellow Rebecca Minkoff swing bag would look great with it, with the yellow in the print! It's taken me a little while to get around to pairing them together though.

Had quite a quiet day, doing the daycare drop off / pickup and attending my OB appointment in the morning. Made some progress on pre-scheduling blog posts in the afternoon too. I want to have a few banked up as I'm not sure how long it will take me to get back into a little routine with blogging when I have a newborn and a toddler.

Last worn: Somedays Lovin' kimono, black maternity tank, Jeanswest boyfriend denim maternity shorts, gold Havaianas, Rebecca Minkoff swing bag.

Other ways to wearSomedays Lovin' kimono and a maxi skirt, black maternity tank with blue and purple, boyfriend denim maternity shorts with green and laceRebecca Minkoff swing bag and skinny jeans.

More fun yellow bags under $200!

What I wore:

AwayFromBlue | 38 weeks green tee blue scarf yellow bag maternity denim shorts

AwayFromTheBlue | Blue green yellow outfit with Rebecca Minkoff Swing bag
TeeJeanswest Sonny maternity tee in lagoon marle (C/O)
ShortsJeanswest maternity rolled up shorts
Shoesslim gold Havaianas
BagRebecca Minkoff Swing bag in canary yellow

Why I wore it:

When I was thinking of another outfit this yellow bag would look good with, I thought about this green tee. While I liked the combination, I thought it was missing a little something so I added the printed scarf. The scarf has some yellow running through it too so it was an easy choice.

We spent the morning getting (or trying to get) the final few things for baby. Was a little shocked to find that our local baby store we bought almost everything from for toddler T had closed down! The store that took its place didn't have the same range which was a shame. At 38 weeks, I'm ordering a few baby things online and just hoping they show up in time...

Last worn: mixed print scarf, Jeanswest maternity tee, long denim maternity shorts, gold Havaianas (above), Rebecca Minkoff canary yellow swing bag (above).

Other ways to wearmixed print scarf in the office with a LBD, Jeanswest maternity tee and skinny jeans, long denim maternity shorts and a printed singlet, Rebecca Minkoff canary yellow swing bag and a maxi skirt.

Balenciaga Tempete Day Bag, Jeanswest Maternity Denim Shorts and Singlets

While baby has arrived, I've got a few more pregnancy outfits scheduled to share on the blog, as I enjoy the newborn cuddles and try to avoid going out too often as we adjust to life with two under 2!

Two casual denim shorts outfits with my Balenciaga tempete day bag. Hard to believe it's almost 7 years old! This is why I like to splurge on accessories. They last a long time and unlike clothes, always fit - even during pregnancy.

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Summer Shorts Third Trimester Maternity Tank outfit printed kimono Bal day bag

AwayFromTheBlue | Balenciaga pearly grey wrap bracelet Balenciaga tempete day bag
JacketSomedays Lovin' Yakuza print kimono (on sale!)
Necklace: Lovisa silver love knitted heart pendant necklace
SingletJeanswest maternity tank in sea glass
ShortsJeanswest Georgie maternity boyfriend shorts (available in non-maternity also)
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual plus turquoise and silver beaded bracelet set, Balenciaga classic double tour bracelet in pearly grey
BagBalenciaga giant hardware Day bag in 2009 tempete

Why I wore it:

When I was trying to think of different outfit combinations with my limited third trimester capsule wardrobe, I was having a look back through past blog photos and was surprised I hadn't worn this tank and kimono together before! I really like the pairing, glad I gave it a go.

Wore this for a day out in Brisbane with my mum and toddler T, we went to the baby and toddler expo and got a lot of great things. In the evening, we had dinner at the in-laws. I'd usually change and try get a little dressed up for dinner, but felt happy and comfortable in this so just wore the same thing in the evening.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer, Somedays Lovin' kimono, green maternity tank, boyfriend denim shorts, HavaianasBalenciaga tempte day bag.

Other ways to wear: printed kimono and a maxi skirt, green maternity tank with gold accessories, boyfriend denim shorts and a novelty pregnancy teeBalenciaga tempte day bag and a blue dress.

Where to buy Balenciaga Day bags:

What I wore:

ShortsJeanswest maternity rolled up shorts
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual plus silver and turquoise bangle set
BagBalenciaga giant hardware Day bag in 2009 tempete

Why I wore it:

This is an outfit combination I've worn before, the singlet and shorts together. Different accessories this time though, to try change it up just a little. It was another hot and humid day - despite it being autumn Brisbane hasn't turned down the summer temperatures yet! Just wanted something simple and easy for taking toddler T to playgroup.

Really liked the monochrome look of this outfit with the blue Balenciaga bag and the blue singlet and shorts.

Last worn: printed maternity singlet, maternity bermuda denim shorts, Havaianas (above), Balenciaga temptete day bag (above).

Other ways to wear: blue printed singlet and a red bag, bermuda denim shorts and a striped tank, blue Balenciaga day bag with pink and purple.

Marc By Marc Jacobs Ukita, Printed Kimonos, Denim Maternity Shorts

Two more easy third trimester outfits, with my bright and colourful Marc By Marc Jacobs Ukita bag. I've been enjoying wearing it lately.

What I wore:

AwayFromBlue | Summer Third Trimester Jeanswest maternity tank denim short red bag kimono

AwayFromTheBlue | Marc by Marc Jacobs Little Ukita bag in Rock Lobster red printed kimono

Shoesslim gold Havaianas
BagMarc by Marc Jacobs Little Ukita bag in Rock Lobster

Why I wore it:

I wore this outfit to play along with the #SNSColour challenge on instagram. The theme for the day was 'brights' so I decided to wear this bright bag and kimono together. I really liked the combination, and I've worn them together before (without a baby bump).

Nice casual outfit to do the daycare drop off / pickup, work from home and go to my OB appointment in the afternoon.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarersred printed kimono, black maternity tank, maternity boyfriend shorts, gold Havaianas, Marc by Marc Jacobs Lil' Ukita Bag.

Other ways to wear: pattern mixing with printed kimono and striped tank, black maternity tank with blue and purple, maternity boyfriend shorts and a wrap top, Marc by Marc Jacobs Lil Ukita Bag in the office.

Shoes:  slim gold Havaianas
BagMarc by Marc Jacobs Little Ukita bag in Rock Lobster

Why I wore it:

The style challenge was over when I wore this outfit, but I'd been thinking that the bright bag would work really nicely with the navy floral print kimono. I'd considered wearing this for the 'navy' theme of the challenge, but changed my mind and wore a navy maxi skirt that day instead.

Really liked the colour combination, so wore this on the weekend. It was a nice and comfortable outfit for grocery shopping and toddler T's swimming lesson. Lauren left a comment a while back that this tank and kimono would look together and she was right, I liked the pairing.

Cross Body Bags and Maternity Tanks and Shorts: Summer SAHM Style

While it's autumn in Australia, I'll be continuing to share more summer outfits. Because I'm a little behind with blogging and because Brisbane isn't showing any signs of reducing the 30+ degree temperatures we've had over summer.

More singlets and shorts summer outfits. It really is the best way to keep as cool as possible in the third trimester, if you don't count a bikini as acceptable clothing outside of the pool/beach! To vary things a little, one brighter outfit and one neutral outfit, both with different cross body bags.

What I wore:

Away From Blue | lace kimono jeanswest jenni maternity singlet georgie boyfriend denim shorts LV speedy B

AwayFromTheBlue | Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene speedy bandouliere cross body bag 30
JacketShein cream lace kimono (C/O)
Necklace: Happiness Boutique turquoise and coral pendant necklace (C/O)
TankJeanswest maternity tank in sea glass
ShortsJeanswest Georgie maternity boyfriend shorts (available in non-maternity also)
Shoesslim gold Havaianas
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

Felt like it had been a while (4 months!) since I last wore this lace kimono so decided to get it out again. Had to take toddler T to a checkup at the doctors in the morning, then we had his gymboree class.

I've been wearing this gold necklace a lot recently - it seems to go with everything, and although the stone is turquoise I thought I'd give it a try with the green tank. Didn't mind the combination.

Last worn: lace kimono, green maternity tank, maternity boyfriend shorts, Havaianas, Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere.

Other ways to wearlace kimono and chambray dress, green maternity tank and navy kimono, maternity shorts and a non-maternity top, Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere and skinny jeans.

What I wore:

Necklace: Australian coin and crest necklace
SingletJeanswest maternity tank in black
ShortsJeanswest maternity rolled up shorts
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagMarc by Marc Jacobs Little Ukita bag in Rock Lobster

Why I wore it:

Another day, another maternity singlet and shorts combo, but this time with a different cross body bag. While the LV speedy bag I wore above is a nice neutral for a bright outfit, this time it was a bright bag and a neutral outfit.

In case you missed me sharing about it on twitter, I had a chat with Eileen about handbags for Sugarmama.tv. I shared my must-have bags, as she's currently writing about capsule wardrobe planning. I said a cross body bag was a real essential for mums. Now that toddler T spends almost all his time outside of his stroller, cross body bags have been really helpful! I'm starting to think I might be wearing nothing but cross body bags by the time baby comes along. Just as well I have a few in my handbag collection to pick from!
