Floral Kimonos, Navy Tanks and Denim Shorts

This is my one thousandth post! 😱 1,000 outfit posts, 1,584 outfits! It's just like every other post as it suck up on me with all the Christmas prep, but when I hit my 5 year blogaversary in January I'll have something special for my followers to mark the occasion 😉 Thank you for reading along! 💙

Spring is such a great time to wear kimonos. I have a few of them now. The majority of them are blue of course, since it's my favourite colour! The two below are both navy and floral print but even worn with navy tanks and denim shorts they look quite different. I mentioned when I first got the second one that I already had a similar one, it was good to do a side by side post and see how different they are.

What I wore:

Navy tank denim shorts floral cocoon kimono neon pink mini MAC bag spring OOTD | Away From Blue

Rebecca Minkoff neon pink mini MAC | Away From The Blue
Necklace: Ruby Olive Softies Ava elephant pendant teething necklace
Tank: Kmart navy ribbed tank
Shorts: Jeanswest denim cuff shorts
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagRebecca Minkoff neon pink mini MAC (on sale!)

Why I wore it:

The first time I wore this tank it was a little layered up as it was a cooler day, but when I bought it I had outfits like this in mind. The tank, shorts and kimono combo was one I wore a lot last spring/summer, only with maternity pieces. This is basically the non-maternity version of this outfit! I like the combination of the neon pink bag with the print on the kimono, I've worn them together before. Wore this out to run a couple of errands and take Baby Boy for his weekly weigh.

This is the second time I've worn this tank and I'm reviewing everything I buy after I wear it twice in the month I buy it. I've written more about why I do this here, but it's basically to make me think more critically about my purchases and make sure I'm adding sensible choices to my wardrobe.

My purchase review:
I really like this tank! A great basic, for $3 you can't go wrong, and I didn't have a plain navy tank like this in my wardrobe. I am a little annoyed I've seen some other colours of this on sale in Kmart recently for even less...ha! But overall I'm pleased with this purchase, I know it will gt a lot more wear and I don't have any concerns with the quality even with the low price.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarernavy cocoon kimono, navy tank, denim shorts, Havaianas, neon pink mini MAC.

Other ways to wear: kimono and jeans in autumn, navy tank and cosy layers, denim shorts and ankle boots, neon pink mini MAC and flares.

Shoes:  slim gold Havaianas
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch C/O JORD
BagRebecca Minkoff unlined saddle bag in cherry red (on sale and on sale in pink!)

Why I wore it:

Wore this out for a big day of Christmas shopping that I mentioned previously. While I was out to buy some specific gifts, I also had a few stores I wanted to check out myself and take advantage of having someone watch the boys while I was trying clothes on. This was a simple and easy outfit for a day of shopping, and it was easy to try things on too. Managed to get a new pair of shorts, one of the items off my wardrobe wishlist.

I've mentioned before that a kimono is great for using as a breastfeeding cover. I ended up having to use this kimono to throw over the stroller for baby boy at nap time as well as I'd forgotten to pack a blanket. Kimonos really ares such versatile pieces!

Last worn: floral kimono, navy breastfeeding tank, printed denim shorts, gold Havaianas, red saddle bag.

Other ways to wearfloral kimono and stripes, navy breastfeeding tank and purple jeans, printed denim shorts and a blush blazer, red saddle bag and printed dress.

Spring Layers: Rebecca Minkoff Micro Regan Yellow Cross Body Bag

Although our recent wave of summer-like temperatures makes this seem so long ago, there were a couple of cooler days in spring that gave me one last chance to enjoy layering again. I picked some light cardigans to wear with my skinny jeans, and accessorised with my mustard yellow Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan bag. It looks so nice with blue!

What I wore:

spring coffee date layered OOTD SAHM Style navy scarf grey tee skinny jeans yellow bag | AwayFromBlue

JORD COra purpleheart wood watch, Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold | AwayFromTheBlue
Jacket: Paper Scissors grey wrap cardigan
Scarf: navy bird print scarf

JeansJeanswest Bindi skinny 7/8 jeans in indigo luxe
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs black logo plaque ballet flats
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch C/O JORD
BagRebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold

Why I wore it:

I was glad for a cooler day giving me another chance to wear this lovely scarf. Definitely my favourite over the past autumn/winter, it was perfect for taking off and on through the day as the temperature fluctuated with the rain showers.

Despite really liking this outfit, I had a bit of a sad day. Had a last coffee date with a friend before she flew out of Brisbane. It was wonderful that things aligned for us to have one more catch up before she left, but it was a bittersweet afternoon.

It's the second time I've worn this tee and I'm wearing everything I buy twice in the month I buy it to make sure I'm making sensible purchases. My purchase review:

I'm managing to get lots of use from this tee! For just $3.50 I know I'll get my money's worth from it, despite all of the grey tees I already own...not something I needed but something I'm pleased to have in my wardrobe. I need to focus on adding more basics and this is perfect.

Last worn: grey cardigan, navy bird print scarf, grey tee, prima denim skinny jeans, black ballet flats, Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan.

Other ways to weargrey cardigan and a maxi skirt, bird print scarf and stripes, grey tee and shorts, prima denim skinny jeans and boucle, black ballet flats and black jeans, Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan and monochrome grey outfit.

Shoes:  Marc by Marc Jacobs metallic mouse flats (on sale in black or silver!)
BagRebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold

Why I wore it:

I assumed that the next day would be just as cool, although I skipped the scarf just in case. I ended up being quite warm in this outside at playgroup when the sun came out, probably didn't need the cardigan. Again though I liked being able to wear a cosy layer once more before warmer weather stuck around and the cardigan was nice in the cooler morning and evening.

The yellow accessories went really nicely with the navy tank. I had planned more summery outfits when I bought this, but it was great to layer it up a little for its first wear for something a little different. I know I'll get lots of opportunities in the future to wear it differently as the hot weather is here to stay for spring now.

Last worn: marle cardigan, Jeanswest skinny jeans, gold mouse flats, Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan (above). First time I've worn the navy tank as it is a new purchase.

Other ways to wearmarle cardigan and maxi dress, Jeanswest skinny jeans and blush blazer, gold mouse flats and a wrap dress, Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan and chambray skirt.

Kimonos, Shorts and Rebecca Minkoff Micro Regan Cross Body Bag

After a mini handbag clear out a while back I got rid of the yellow Rebecca Minkoff swing bag I had. I loved the colour but not the style so much. So when I saw this yellow bag in the Shopbop sale I had to buy it! It's a lovely mustard yellow that works nicely with other colours as well as neutrals.

When we had a few warmer than average spring days I was happy to get my denim shorts out again! It's been a while since they've been worn after being pregnant over last spring/summer. The two pairs I'm wearing below were last worn in April, a year and a half ago!

What I wore:

Spring opshopping outfit pritned kimono singlet denim shorts yellow Regan bag Havaianas | AwayFromBlue

Cross body Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel bag in Harvest Gold | AwayFromTheBlue
JacketChoies red vintage pattern kimono
Necklace: Ruby Olive Softies Charlotte teething necklace
Tank: Cotton On red singlet
ShortsJeanswest black denim cuff shorts
Shoesslim gold Havaianas
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch C/O JORD
BagRebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold (new purchase)

Why I wore it:

Wasn't sure how this mustard micro Regan bag would look with the printed red kimono and singlet, but I'm glad I gave it a go as I really liked the combination! This was a simple outfit for a rushed trip around the shops in the afternoon. This top isn't the best style to feed in while in public for me. I don't feel very covered up pulling it down and it's fitted so is tricky pulling it up. I wanted to get out and back home before baby boy got hungry.  My mother in law kindly babysat toddler T so I just had to worry about fitting in with baby boy's needs.

Looking at my wardrobe and thinking about what I wanted to wear in spring I realised I needed some more basics, as I miss the maternity tanks I had in my pregnancy capsule wardrobe. I passed them onto a pregnant friend. Although I didn't find everything I wanted in the opshops, I did have some luck and managed to buy a few things. Also picked up a couple of clothes from Kmart, they have a really good selection of basics at the moment! While this outfit might not have been the best to feed in, it was perfect for quickly trying on clothes.

Last worn: red printed kimono, red Cotton On singlet, black denim shorts, Havaianas. First time I've worn the bag as it's a new purchase.

Other ways to wearred printed kimono and striped tank, red Cotton On singlet and maxi skirt, denim shorts and a peplum tank.

Shorts: Jeanswest printed denim shorts
ShoesRebecca Minkoff Georgina studded gladiator sandals in blush (new purchaseon sale!)
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch C/O JORD
BagRebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold

Why I wore it:

This outfit is pretty much the non-maternity version of this second trimester outfit! I liked the combination of the grey tee and grey kimono together so it was nice to wear it again. This was an easy and comfortable outfit for a hot day too. Grey tee, denim shorts and kimono with my newly bought accessories made getting dressed simple.

I had a stressful morning, taking baby boy for some blood tests as he's been unwell. I don't like having my own blood taken (the 3 hour glucose test in my pregnancies was not fun) but it was so much more difficult seeing my son have his blood taken!

On a lighter outfit-related note, I really liked the combination of the printed kimono and the harvest gold micro Regan bag together. The bag is so nice with the yellow on the kimono. I'll be wearing this combination more often.

It's the second time I've worn this bag, and I'm reviewing everything I buy after I wear it twice to try learn what works and doesn't work for my wardrobe. Although this micro Regan bag is more of a mustard yellow than the bright yellow bag it replaced, I really like this colour and think it will work just as well for spring and summer as it will in autumn. Happy I bought this, I'll try get a youtube review up soon.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer, grey printed kimono, colour block tee, denim shorts, Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan (above). First time I've worn the sandals as they are a recent purchase.

Two Ways to Wear: Navy Printed Kimono

October is 'Buy Nothing New Month' and although I blew that challenge when I shopped the latest Shopbop sale, it did make me head to the opshop (thrift store) first when I felt like getting another kimono. Now it's spring I've started to wear mine again and thought another would be a good addition to my wardrobe. I managed to pick up this pretty navy one below in the first store I looked in, so it was meant to be!

What I wore:

spring denim shorts print mixing outfit striped tank navy floral kimono | Away From Blue

Rebecca Minkoff neon pink mini MAC unclipped | Away From The Blue
SunniesRay-Ban new Wayfarers
Jacket: thrifted Edited floral and bird print kimono
Necklace: Nibbly Bits Abacus teething necklace in pop

ShortsJeanswest denim cuff shorts
ShoesAsos 'five star' leather sandals
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch C/O JORD
BagRebecca Minkoff neon pink mini MAC (on sale!)

Why I wore it:

Suddenly summer temperatures arrived in Brisbane and it was a good reason to get my shorts collection out again! It's been a long time since I last wore these, as I was pregnant last spring/summer. Couldn't resist a little bit of print mixing with the striped tank, and although the print on this kimono doesn't have any pink in it I thought the neon bag was nice with the navy.

The style challenge for the day was "reward yourself" so wearing my new-to-me purchase seemed fitting. I'd managed to get a rare amount of time to search through a couple of local opshops which was rewarding enough, but really wanted to have a productive trip. The great thing about kimonos is that you can pretty much ignore the size on the label. I was glad when I found this one, even though it's not my size, as it just looks oversized like a regular kimono.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer, striped tank, denim shorts, rose quartz leather sandals, hot pink mini MAC. First time I've worn the kimono as it's a new purchase.

Other ways to wearstriped tank and leopard print, denim shorts and strawberry shirt, rose quartz leather sandals and a maxi dress, hot pink mini MAC and winter layers

JeansSass and Bide pale grey skinny jeans
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch C/O JORD
BagRebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC (on sale in metallic pink!)

Why I wore it:

After a couple days of more spring-like weather I decided to wear my jeans again. I realised this was a mistake when we got to playgroup though - it was such a hot day, really wish I'd gone with shorts! I did like the colourful kimono and teething necklace against the black and grey. The outfit was just a little too warm to sit outside with the boys comfortably. I changed as soon as we got back home.

The style challenge for the day was delicate - but I couldn't think of anything delicate to wear that would stand up to a morning at playgroup with an energetic bunch of toddlers and a drooly, grabby baby!

Two years ago I decided to look more critically at things I was adding to my wardrobe. After I've worn something twice I do a purchase review. It helps me identify when I'm buying the right things or the wrong things and will hopefully stop me accumulating items in my wardrobe that sit there with tags on months later. It's worked well so far, with the odd exception.

My purchase review of this kimono:
I know I didn't need another kimono. I already have two other blue ones, and a grey one with a similar floral and bird print. However I know from last spring/summer and our heatwave plagued autumn that kimonos are one of the pieces I wear consistently in the warmer weather, so I'm confident this will get used a lot. It was just $7 so I'm certain to get my money's worth. It's sure to be worn a lot.

October Purchases and Clothing Wishlist

Almost the end of October already! Sharing what I bought and how I wore it.

Like I mentioned last monthOctober is Buy Nothing New month. I didn't meet the challenge as I couldn't resist the Shopbop sale...but I did browse more often in the op-shops (thrift stores). I managed to find some pieces I wanted there too.

A little over two years ago, I set myself a goal of wearing things twice in a month after buying them. I've recently changed that to wear things twice in the month that I buy them. It gives me less time to wear things if I buy them near the end of a month, and makes me think even more critically when I'm buying. Near the end of a month I have to think 'do I really need this?' and 'will I wear it twice in just a couple of weeks?'. Often I chose not to buy, which is great for my budget, and wardrobe!

So here's what I bought in October:

How I Wore It:

The only thing I haven't worn twice or more is the grey tee, but as mentioned in the video that's partly because I have a lot of grey tees and partly because I bought it so close to the end of the month.

Overall I think I did pretty well, especially after shopping so little over the past few months with #noBuyJuly and #noSpenderSeptember. It's made me use my own wardrobe more to see the gaps. While there are still some things I'd love to buy I haven't found the perfect pieces yet and so I'll keep looking. I'm going to try to not settle for anything less than perfect. It's not like I don't have any clothes to wear if I don't buy these things!

This is my current clothing wishlist:

  • white v-neck tee that isn't see-through
  • basic block colour relaxed fit tank without super low arm holes that show off a bra
  • boyfriend denim shorts (I miss my maternity ones!)
  • dresses I can breastfeed in
  • block colour maxi skirts

Pretty much just wanting to focus on adding more basics to my wardrobe! Would love recommendations if you know where I could find anything on my wishlist above.

Balenciaga Pink Sorbet City Bag, Jersey Blazer and Jeans

I enjoyed carrying my magenta Balenciaga day bag recently, so thought I'd pull out another pink bag, my sorbet Balenciaga city. With spring-like warmer weather, I decided to wear a blazer rather than the cardigans I've been favouring over winter.

I tracked this cream Zara blazer down on ebay. It's soft jersey material and I have it in black too. I really like this cream colour as it's a great neutral and goes with everything. The soft fabric makes me happy wearing it outside of the office.

What I wore:

SunniesRay-Ban new Wayfarers
Jacket: Zara cream jersey blazer
Scarf: navy bird print scarf
TankMEV Britney bubble tank in mood indigo C/O Zibibo
JeansJeanswest Super Skinny Jeans in Mid Indigo
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs metallic mouse flats (on sale in black or silver!)
BagBalenciaga RH classic city in 2010 sorbet

Why I wore it:

Wore this for a lunchtime catch up with a friend from out of state. She was in Brisbane for a couple days for work and managed to squeeze a little bit of spare time to meet up. It was so lovely to see her. The weather was not quite so lovely! It looked like an okay day and as it was supposed to rain a little I brought umbrellas just in case. After we made the decision to head off it started pouring! Luckily the stroller has a waterproof cover, but I realised on the way home that I had left the spare battery pack for my phone in the now waterlogged baby bag!

This pink Balenciaga looks pretty bad when it gets wet but (as I reassured my friend) it dries fine and it handles the rain well. The sun does more damage to it through fading the colour than any rain, especially since I've waterproofed this bag like all my handbags. It wouldn't be my first choice to wear for a stormy day, but at least I don't have to worry about it developing watermarks if I do get caught in the rain with it.

Last worn: cream blazer, bird print scarf, navy breastfeeding tank, skinny jeans, gold mouse flats, Balenciaga sorbet city.

Other ways to wearcream blazer in the office, bird print scarf and striped skirt, navy breastfeeding tank and a maxi skirt, skinny jeans and a trench coat, gold mouse flats and a maxi dress, Balenciaga sorbet city and denim shorts.

BagBalenciaga RH classic city in 2010 sorbet

Why I wore it:

I enjoyed wearing the jersey blazer so got it out again when I was trying to think what jacket would go nicely with the pink and grey outfit I'd put together. I did try a denim jacket with this, but it seemed to hit at an odd point on this top, I much preferred this blazer. Ran some errands, took toddler T for a haircut so he'd look nice for his brother's upcoming dedication ceremony and had dinner with the inlaws.

It's the second time I've worn this new top, so my purchase review:

I like it! It really is perfect for breastfeeding, and the fabric is softer (and a little cosier) than the navy one I have in the same style. The wrap top is kept together with a snap closure so I just need to unsnap it to breastfeed, really handy even though it's not actually a breastfeeding top. I'm pleased I bought this and see it easily getting more wear.

2 Ways To Wear: Printed Shirt Dress in Winter with Rebecca Minkoff Love Bag

First, don't forget to enter my JORD watch giveaway!

I snapped up this Atmos&Here Nigella collarless shirt dress in August, after it went on sale again. I first saw it go on sale in July during my #noBuyJuly16 challenge so I was pleased I had the chance to buy it again when the challenge was over. It was easy to meet my goal to wear it twice in the month after buying it as I'd had my eye on it a while.

What I wore:

black belted cardigan tights ankle boots geometric print shirt dress winter OOTD | Away From Blue

Rebecca Minkoff charcoal grey Love bag cross body | Away From The Blue
Jacket: Cotton On black knit wrap cardigan
DressAtmos&Here Nigella collarless shirt dress (new purchase)
ShoesRMK Chester black ankle boots (on sale!)
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey (on sale in pink)

Why I wore it:

I was, as usual, in a rush to get the boys and myself ready and out the door for playgroup. This dress was the perfect easy option - just add some cosy black layers with a knit cardigan and fleece-lined tights and I was ready to go. The grey bag is the perfect neutral as it goes with everything.

It was so easy to feed baby boy in this dress too! Shirt dresses are great for breastfeeding.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer, black cardigan, ankle boots, Rebecca Minkoff Love bag. First time I've worn the shirt dress as it's a new purchase.

Other ways to wearblack cardigan and printed jeans, ankle boots and a maxi skirt, Rebecca Minkoff Love bag and a blue kimono.

ShoesAsos Cleo leather boots in tan
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch C/O JORD
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey (on sale in pink)

Why I wore it:

I was a lot more leisurely getting ready the second time I wore this dress, a few days later. I tried on a couple of scarves and decided this one with the stars looked okay with the print of the dress. Of course, my leisurely start to the morning meant we were running a little late with getting everything done. I popped round to visit a few friends and drop off some invites for baby boy's upcoming dedication ceremony. I was constantly reminded of how late I was every time I glanced at my new watch, ha!

As I was rushing between people and places I ended up taking the scarf and jacket off as it turned into a really warm day. With it being spring now, I'll probably get to wear this dress bare-legged next time.

As it's the second time I've worn this dress, and I'm reviewing everything I buy after wearing it twice, my purchase review:

I really like this dress. I had my eye on it a while so was determined to buy it. I really like the soft fabric and while its light enough for spring and summer it kept me cosy at the end of winter. The only thing I don't like on this dress is that I noticed the bottom button popping undone a few times. Luckily it seems to the the only button that does that, but was a little annoying having to check it all the time. Especially at playgroup when I kept getting up and down with the boys. I think stitching the button hole closed a little more would help.

Overall, I'm pleased I bought the dress - I see it getting lots more wear, even with the annoying button.

Two Ways To Wear: Sass and Bide Playman Printed Skinny Jeans

Near the end of June I stumbled across these jeans on ebay. I try not to buy things too close to the end of the month so I can get a few wears out of them before the month ends, but I really liked the print on these and the bargain price so snapped them up. Wore them pretty close together to meet my goal of two wears out of everything I buy within a month.

What I wore:

Sass and Bide Playman Printed Skinny Jeans black clothes red Alexander McQueen Skull scarf bright accessory | Away From Blue

handheld smooshy Mulberry foggy grey buffalo leather Alexa satchel | AwayFromTheBlue
JacketAsos Black by Markus Lupfer printed leather jacket
ScarfAlexander McQueen red skull-print modal and cashmere-blend scarf
TopJeanswest 'Tilda' black shirt
JeansSass & Bide Playman skinny jeans (new purchase)
ShoesRMK Chester black ankle boots (on sale!)
BagMulberry regular Alexa bag in foggy grey

Why I wore it:

While these are a bit of a statement jean, their first outing was actually a pretty boring errand running day! I was eager to wear them soon after they arrived though. Even though the Mulberry Alexa is a purpley-grey I went with the red scarf although they don't match as I thought it added a nice bit of colour to all of the black.

I tucked the jeans into the boots but it wasn't a great idea, as there are zipper details on the back it wasn't the most comfortable way to wear them.

Last worn: leather jacket, Alexander McQueen skull scarf, black top, ankle boots, Mulberry Alexa. First time I've worn the jeans as they are a recent purchase.

Other ways to wearleather jacket and a shift dress, skull scarf and plaid, black top and a baby bump, ankle boots in spring, Mulberry Alexa and a maxi skirt.

More printed jeans under $100:

What I wore:

ScarfMarc by Marc Jacobs scarf in Island pine-print
TopDorothy Perkins 3/4 sleeve wrap top
JeansSass & Bide Playman skinny jeans
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs silver tuxedo flats (on sale!)
BagMulberry regular Alexa bag in foggy grey

Why I wore it:

Layered up or a really chilly day! None of my scarves seemed to look quite right next to the chevron print on these jeans but with the low neckline on this top I wanted something around my neck. Decided to wrap this one around my neck a few times to keep it away from the print and stop them 'competing' with each other. It would have been better if I'd spent a little extra time tying the scarf into  a proper snood style so it stayed in place, as it kept unravelling and driving me crazy.

I regretted all the warm layers when we got to the library. We went for the baby and toddler session and they'd heated up the room for the tiny babies. I was pulling everything off and wishing I'd gone with my short sleeved wrap top instead!

As it's the second time I've worn these jeans, my purchase review:

They are proving trickier to style than I imagined and don't work well with ankle boots, but I really do like the print on these and I enjoy wearing them. Printed jeans aren't as easy to throw on as blue jeans, but it's good to change things up a little and I don't mind thinking a little more about what to wear with these. I have a few more outfits in mind for them, they are definitely sticking around. Jeans aren't something I have a shortage of but I've been looking for more printed pants lately so I'm pleased with these.

Last worn: grey longline cardigan, Marc Jacobs printed scarf, blue wrap top, printed skinny jeans (above), silver ballet flats, Mulberry Alexa (above).

Other ways to weargrey longline cardigan and flares, Marc Jacobs printed scarf in the office, blue wrap top and a maxi skirt, silver ballet flats and a tartan pencil skirt, Mulberry Alexa and denim shorts.
