30 Ways To Wear Somedays Lovin' Yakuza Print Grey Floral Kimono: #30Wears Series

New month (how is it December already?!) a new #30wears post, showing some different ways to wear this grey floral print kimono. When I first got this kimono in 2016, I wore it a lot. So much so that I was sure I'd hit 30 wears on it and was surprised at the end of that summer to realise I hadn't! 30 wears doesn't sound like that much for pieces you love, but as I've shared before, if you do the maths it takes 15 months if you wear something once every two weeks, which is probably more frequently than average.

Math aside, I'm so happy with this kimono. It's a frequent go-to, especially paired with my mustard yellow Rebecca Minkoff bag, you'll see that pop up a lot in the photos below and I've previously done a 30 ways to wear a micro Regan bag post on that bag.

#30Wears: Grey Floral and Bird Print Kimono

I picked up this kimono in an ASOS sale 2 years ago and despite feeling like I frequently wear it, I'm just hitting 30 wears now. Quality wise, still looks pristine and new as the day I got it, no signs of wear. It was on sale for $33.60 when I got it so it's just over a dollar a wear at $1.12. It's full retail price was $95 so I'm pretty happy with what I paid and the low cost per wear! It was a great sale find. And as you can see below, a statement floral print kimono can actually be worn with a lot of different things!

Floral Kimono and Green Tops

floral kimono #30wears 4 ways with green tops and denim shorts | Awayfromblue

I find green a tricky colour to wear sometimes, but I've been making an effort to try wear it more often. While there isn't any green in the print of this kimono, with the florals and birds green just seemed like a nice colour combination to try. As you can see, I liked it so much I wore it that way a few times!

Grey Floral Kimono and Grey Tees

floral kimono #30wears 3 ways with grey tees, denim and cross body bags | awayfromtheblue

While I enjoy wearing this printed kimono with bright pieces, nothing beats a classic grey tee. I used to be wary about wearing a grey tee and grey outerwear together, but I gave this kimono a try with a grey tee once and loved it - don't know why I'd never tried it before!  The colourful print helps add some more colour and interest so it's not just grey on grey.

Floral Kimono and Black Tops

floral kimono #30wears 3 ways with black tops and denim shorts | Awayfromtheblue

Colourful tops and grey tops are nice with this kimono, and black tops are perfect with it too! Adding a colourful printed kimono to a basic black top and denim outfit makes it instantly seem a little more pulled-together, and with the neutral top and grey base of the kimono it means you can add a colourful bag to your outfit. Picking an accessory that matches one of the colours in the print is a great idea, as I've done here with the mustard yellow micro Regan bag and blue Balenciaga day bag.

Kimono In Pregnancy With Maternity Denim

floral kimono 30 wears 3 ways in pregnancy maternity shorts | Away From Blue

Having a limited pregnancy wardrobe (and even implementing a capsule wardrobe for the third trimester) meant I reached for accessories more often. A kimono is a wonderfully lightweight piece that adds more interest and colour to your outfit, without making you any warmer, even while pregnant in a heatwave. I loved adding this floral print kimono or one of my many other printed ones to an otherwise simple pregnancy outfit. Kimonos are very bump-friendly too as you never have to attempt to fasten them up over a growing baby bump. They always fit, in every trimester! As a bonus, they work as a breastfeeding cover in the postpartum days too!

Kimonos with Shorts

floral kimono 30 wears 4 ways with denim shorts for summer | Away From The Blue

Denim shorts are a Brisbane summer essential - I couldn't do summer without shorts! As you can see by how many times I've worn this kimono with shorts, easily the majority of the 30 wears! I love how nicely a floral print kimono like this works with denim - it's an easy, fuss-free option. As mentioned above, it's nice to have a light layer for summer that provides some sun protection without overheating too. Picking the right kimono is important to allow it to be breathable in the middle of the summer heat - viscose, cotton and modal are better than polyester.

Kimonos and Skinny Jeans

floral kimono 30 wears 3 ways to wear with skinny jeans | awayfromtheblue

While they are great in summer, it's possible to wear your kimonos in spring and autumn too just by swapping out the denim shorts for skinny jeans. You can go for colourful jeans, or keep it simple and stick to the classic blue or black denim.

Kimono with Dresses and Skirts

floral kimono #30wears 3 ways skirts and dresses | awayfromblue

While I do tend to wear this kimono with denim a lot, I do like to try different things with it now and then. Kimonos work just as well with dresses and skirts as they do with jeans or shorts. The first outfit with the maxi skirt is one of my favourite pregnancy outfits, the slouchy kimono and long skirt just work perfectly together.

Floral Kimono and Print Mixing

floral kimono #30wears 3 different ways to print mix | awayfromblue blog

floral kimono 30 wears 4 ways print mixing with stripes | awayfromtheblue blog

Florals and stripes is a frequently worn print mixing formula. I'm sure you've seen it around on blogs before, even if you've never tried it yourself. With the floral print on this kimono, I was eager to try it with stripes and I love the way this looks. You don't have to stop at stripes though!
Embroidered floral shorts, polka dots or even abstract print, there are so many options. A good tip is to make sure that the prints have a similar colour. The gold polka dots and the yellow florals, or the similarly shaped floral print and floral embroidery together. While I dont always love the resulting outfits, I do have a lot of fun trying new things and wearing different prints with this kimono.

How Do I Know How Many Wears Something's Had?

I've had this question a few times lately. I blog what I actually wear - I take photos on my way out the door most mornings. That means if I want to know how many times I've worn something, I just look up the name of it on the blog and get a count. One of the benefits of having an archive of daily outfits for almost 6 years!

This is my last 30 ways to wear post for the year and it's been an incredibly fun challenge - I know you all enjoy the posts too as they are some of the most popular on my blog, so I'm looking forward to continuing with it next year and making it a permanent fixture. It's been a challenge to hit 30 wears regularly, but identifying pieces I'm close to that number with and giving them lots of frequent re-wears is helping me hit my goals. Thank you for following along, the sweet comments, and the sharing and pinning of the posts.

November Purchases

While I didn't buy a lot in October, I did do a lot of shopping in November!

November Purchases: What I bought, How I wore It. Budget fashion blogger | away from the blue

There are a couple reasons for buying so much this month:
  • Doing Christmas shopping meant more exposure to stores and more temptation to shop
  • I love spring/summer clothing and it makes up the bulk of my wardrobe as I find ways to wear it year-round. And there have been some really nice new season pieces.
  • I've been decluttering and downsizing my wardrobe So I'm starting to feel there are 'gaps'.
  • Jeanswest had a 40% off sale and I still had unspent gift cards that I had been setting aside for after my 6 months without shopping challenge at the start of the year.

The Jeanswest sale being the biggest reason if I'm honest, considering that's where I bought everything! I'm such a sucker for a sale! There's another 40% off sale on right now too!

What I bought:

How I Wore It:

I have a rule that whenever I buy something I have to wear it twice in the month I bought it. I couldn't do that with all of my October purchases, as one arrived over a month after I ordered it, and some had to be taken to the tailor first. I had better luck this month though, as you can see below. The only thing I haven't worn twice are the earrings as I'm saving them for Christmas.

The idea behind wearing things twice in the month I buy them is that I have to come up with two ways to wear it immediately before I buy so I know it will be useful in my wardrobe. I no longer have things new with tags sitting unworn for years and I have to really love it to want to wear it so frequently right away. I've slowed my shopping and gotten more use from the pieces I've bought since I've implemented this rule so I'm keeping on with it.

November purchases worn - spring and summer outfits Brisbane budget fashion blogger | away from the blue

I'm feeling pretty wardrobe content for the moment! Not sure if I'll buy more in December or just get those final few Christmas presents I need to buy for people. The Iconic usually have their big boxing day sale so I'm sure to be tempted by that, especially if Rebecca Minkoff is included!

Relaxed Fit Shorts and Floral Kimono: Spring Playgroup Style

I've been on a bit of a shorts buying binge this spring! I've been slowly swapping out some of my current shorts and selling or donating them to make room for some more of these cute relaxed fit soft shorts. I'm not really sure if they have a proper name, 'relaxed fit soft shorts' seems a bit long. I do know that they are insanely comfortable and perfect for Brisbane's heat though. They look great with this floral print kimono too.

Ordinarily I wouldn't wear voluminous pieces with a kimono, I don't always like the results, but I loved the relaxed vibe of both these outfits. Perfect for playgroup.

What I wore:

Roie Designs waxed leather cream howlite beaded wrap bracelet, Rebecca Minkoff neon pink mini MAC | awayfromblue

Necklace: Uniquely Made with Love Sea Change necklace

ShortsJeanswest 'Scarlette' printed shorts
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual plus Roie Designs waxed leather cream howlite beaded wrap bracelet
BagRebecca Minkoff neon pink mini MAC

Why I wore it:

With the warmer weather, I have been so excited to wear these blue printed shorts again. I know from my personal stylist session that they aren't the best style for me, because post-babies my waist isn't the narrowest part of my body and these shorts highlight that. But I really don't care, I love them anyway. So much so that I went and bought a couple more in a similar style!

I'm surprised that these have only been worn 16 times so far, nowhere near 30 wears but I'm aiming to reach that goal with them this spring/summer!

I usually pair these shorts with stripes if I'm wearing another print, but decided to go with the neutral metallic tank and add the floral print kimono for something different. Partly also because I'm trying to hit 30 wears with this kimono this season. I really liked this combination, nice and comfortable for a warm day at playgroup with the boys. I've worn the tank and shorts together before too.

Last worn: Somedays Lovin' kimono, metallic tank, blue printed shorts, Havaianas, Rebecca Minkoff neon pink mini MAC bag.

Other ways to wearSomedays Lovin' kimono and chambray dress, metallic tank and chambray skirt, blue printed shorts and pink vest, Rebecca Minkoff neon pink mini MAC bag and skinny jeans.

Perfect for pregnancy: floral kimono and maternity tank in third trimester.

Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs

Why I wore it:

Back when we had our failed shopping trip that ended up with x-rays, I'd seen these shorts in Jeanswest and considered them but figured they were a little too expensive and I didn't love them enough to go try them on. I hadn't been able to get them out of my head since then though, and even tried going back in store to buy them. They didn't have my size and again something came up with the boys and I couldn't get to the store that did have my size.

So when I saw these shorts in the 40% off sale I had to get them! Was so pleased to discover them as it's been a while since I last saw them. While the shorts are already a relaxed fit, I thought of pairing them with this black tee right away. I really liked the combination, and the floral kimono added a little extra colour to the outfit. I was really inspired by loving the first outfit so much.

It's got a bit much going on, with the voluminous pieces together, and the mix of prints and embroidery, but I really liked this outfit. So insanely comfortable, and such an easy outfit after our big day out the day before.

Last worn: Somedays Lovin' kimono (above), Havaianas (above), Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere bag. First time I've worn the tee and the embroidered shorts as they are recent purchases.

Other ways to wearSomedays Lovin' kimono and skinny jeans, Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere bag and winter knit.

Perfect for pregnancy: kimono and maxi skirt in second trimesterspeedy bandouliere and maternity wrap dress.

Relaxed fit, soft shorts are perfect for hot days. light and airy, and still great coverage when running around with two toddlers, without having to worry about things riding up. Spring Style: Stripe Tees and Denim Shorts with Silver Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC Bag

For a brief moment, Brisbane suddenly skipped spring and went straight to summer-like temperatures. It gave me the chance to enjoy some of my denim shorts again! It's always nice getting back into shorts when the weather warms up. I ended up wearing two very similar outfits with my striped tees and silver mini MAC bag. Stripes and shorts is such a classic warm weather outfit for me.

What I wore:

3/4 sleeve red stripe tee, bermuda denim shorts, silver mini MAC bag spring style | Away From Blue

ShortsJeanswest Trinity Bermuda denim shorts (on sale!)

NailsOPI This Cost Me a Mint

Why I wore it:

I was so happy to realise it was shorts weather! Still feeling a little bad about not having worn many winter clothes over winter, I squeezed in another wear of this long sleeve tee. When I was putting this outfit together I remembered I wore something similar with pregnant with now Toddler T, using my maternity denim shorts. So of course I had to recreate it with the same bag again, my Rebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC bag. Picked my Converse to wear this time instead of my Havaianas, because I didn't have a big baby belly preventing me from bending over to tie my laces haha!

Was quite a busy morning, so an easy outfit was ideal. Took Baby Boy for his regular weigh in session and then ran a couple of errands. As it was the school holidays, our local shopping centre had some activities on and the boys got to do a cupcake decorating session after we got groceries. Unfortunately, on the very short trip home the cupcakes melted in the heat and their beautiful creations weren't quite so beautiful when they got home. They seemed to think they were still pretty tasty though!

Why I wore it:

Warmer weather means layering just for fun and not for function too, so it was the perfect time to get this vest out again. An impulse buy last year before I started my #6monthswithoutshopping challenge, something different to add to my wardrobe. I see lots of bloggers wearing vests for cooler weather, but if I'm cold I want my arms to be warm, so this is strictly a warm weather piece for me.

I wasn't entirely loving the vest in this outfit, but it seemed like a good way to add a little colour with the neutral pieces. I'm still figuring out the best way to wear this, even though this is it's 9th wear! It's fun to experiment and try different styles though, and good to try make jeans and a tee a little different given how often I wear that combo over summer.

Was just a quiet Saturday - we weren't up to much. We did attempt to go a walk with the toddlers and let them take their bikes. Which resulted in me carrying Baby Boy's trike 90% of the time, ha!

Last worn: pink sleeveless jacket, navy stripe tee, OneTeaspoon denim shorts, Havaianas, Rebecca Minkoff silver mini MAC (above).

Other ways to wear pink sleeveless jacket and chambray dress, navy stripe tee and maxi skirt, OneTeaspoon denim shorts and embroidered tank, Havaianas in different seasons, Rebecca Minkoff silver mini MAC worn as a clutch.

Perfect for pregnancy: stripe tee and pencil skirt in third trimester, mini MAC and maternity tanks.

Stripe Tees Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

If you're looking for a classic fail-safe outfit for warm weather, denim shorts and a striped tee is a great go-to. You can make things a little different with each wear by picking longer sleeved tees, shorts of different lengths or even an extra layer like a vest to add some colour. Stripes and shorts doesn't have to be boring.

Wearing Havaianas In Multiple Seasons

Thanks to a knee injury a few years ago, flats are my most worn shoes.  Out of all the flats I have, I'm sure that my Havaianas are the most frequently worn.

While I do tend to swap them out for my ankle boots in the middle of winter, like the majority of Queenslanders I love my thongs (a.k.a flip-flops for the non-Aussies). The mild Brisbane weather means I can wear them for most of the year, and often do. I'm not as dedicated as some of my friends or Gold-Coast-living-sister who wear them constantly year round, but I have worn them in winter a handful of times despite how much it makes people like Beth in chilly South Adelaide shiver at the thought!

They are so incredibly easy to wear and I'm sure most people have a pair somewhere, even if they only break them out in summer. Despite their popularity, I doubt you'll see Havaianas announced as one of the latest fashion trends (I hold out hope as it was only recently that slides were 'in'!). There's no denying that they are a very common choice here in the sunshine state of Queensland. I wasn't able to find a better shoe to wear through all trimesters of pregnancy, especially in those final days when my feet were so swollen nothing else would fit!

Here's some different ways you can wear Havaianas away from the pool or beach. And yes, some of these outfits were worn in winter!

Havaianas and Maxi Skirts

One of my favourite ways to wear maxi skirts is with a pair of my Havaianas. You can layer with things like a denim jacket when it's cooler. The outfits below were what I wore for a bunch of different activities: working from home, a coffee date with a friend, visiting the zoo, and a day shopping at the outlets. Not a beach in sight.

Havaianas and Jeans

This is a good way to keep your legs warm if the weather is cooler but not yet cold enough to wear boots. I wear this often in autumn. You can add cosy scarves and cardigans if it's cooler, or wear my spring favourite outfit topper: a pretty printed kimono. Havaianas are so easy to slip on to run errands, go to playgroup, or even a casual BBQ which are some of the activities I wore the outfits below for.

Havaianas in Summer

They really are a great summer shoe! You don't have to just wear them with a bikini, you can try denim shorts, skirts, dresses....you really can wear Havaianas with so many different outfits and to so many different places.

You can see why they are a favourite. Do you have any Havaianas or similar shoes? Do you only wear them for summer?

Monochrome Printed Outfits and Rebecca Minkoff Bags

It's funny seeing these outfit pics taken last month as autumn weather has really arrived here in Brisbane!

Blue is my favourite colour, although I do try to wear others and not just wear it every day! A monochrome blue outfit is always one that makes me happy. You can keep it easy and simple with a dress. A plain basic is a good partner for a printed piece if you're wearing separates, and I'm showing you how to wear both.

What I wore:

BagRebecca Minkoff mini MAC in aquamarine with python embossed leather (on sale!)

Why I wore it:

When you're not sure what to wear, a printed dress is an easy instant outfit. It's been such a long time since I wore this dress! Last time I wore it I was actually pregnant with baby boy. It's not breastfeeding friendly so it's been an unsuitable choice before. It was so good to get it out again. No teething necklace needed as the tassels on the dress keep baby amused!

It was perfect for a morning spent with my sister who was happy to keep baby amused while I had my drivers licence renewed, and then we went out for lunch. I even wore makeup to make the photo look better, but of course it's a drivers license photo so I still look terrible in it as you aren't allowed to smile!

Last worn: boho printed dress, Georgina studded sandals, Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC.

Other ways to wearboho printed dress and ankle boots in spring, studded sandals and denim shorts, Rebecca Minkoff aqua mini MAC and a little black dress.

Perfect for pregnancy: boho print dress in second trimester.

Why I wore it:

Had a quiet day when I wore this - a few errands (like picking up a cake!) and then a special family birthday dinner in the evening. I've mentioned a few times when I've worn these shorts that during my wardrobe detox session the personal stylist suggested wearing them with similar colours to create a monochrome outfit. While I've worn it with contrasting colours too, I do like pairing these shorts with other blue pieces. Added the fun pink Balenciaga studded sandals and the colourful teething necklace for a little brightness with all of the blue.

This tee is a 'wardrobe basic' piece that I bought in October. However, this is only it's third wear since then! 3 wears in 7 months really isn't great, especially since I've not been shopping for 5 of those months and have added nothing to my wardrobe. A marle tee is a good basic, but this was my second choice after they didn't have my size in a white tee, and maybe I should have held off for a white one. Will be keeping it in my wardrobe though, just not wearing it as much as I hoped. At $3 though it's not a bad cost per wear already!

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarers, blue marle tee, printed shorts, Balenciaga studded sandals, Rebecca Minkoff MAB mini.

Other ways to wearblue tee and chambray skirt, printed shorts and yellow tank, Balenciaga studded sandals and chambray dress, Rebecca Minkoff MAM and pink jeans.

How You Can Wear It:

Printed pieces make monochrome outfits more interesting as you aren't just wearing a block of one colour. It's a nice way to ease into a monochrome outfit. If you're unsure about the perfect pieces to pair together, a printed dress is an easy instant option that will always look good with any accessories.

Two Ways to Wear Yellow: with Kimonos, Denim Shorts and Fitted Tanks

I really like blue and yellow together. While yellow is more of a spring colour, I find it works well year round, especially if it's in an accessory.

Although it's autumn in Brisbane, there have been some warm days that have allowed me to continue to wear my favourite warm weather outfit combo of a tank, denim shorts and kimono. With clothing pieces and a colour scheme I love, I really liked wearing both of these outfits.

What I wore:

Necklace: Nibbly Bits Wilma teething necklace in pale daffodil
Tank: Kmart navy ribbed tank
ShortsJeanswest denim cuff shorts

Why I wore it:

This was a quiet Saturday as I had a friend come over in the morning. It's hard for us to meet up as often as I'd like as kids don't make scheduling anything easy, but it was wonderful she was able to come over and we could catch up a little.

Picked a simple outfit, denim shorts and a tank. The colourful yellow accessories and printed kimono make it feel a little more dressed up and presentable for having someone visit. Wanted something easy to wear as it had been a stressful few days with Tropical Cyclone Debbie and ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie getting a little too close to friends and family on both ends of the state. We were thankfully fine, and with the constant TV coverage my family up north and own south were on the news! While it was over a month ago now (I'm really behind with blogging!) you can help charities make a difference any day of the year as recovery continues.

Why I wore it:

This outfit was inspired by an instagrammer I was following the #SYWardrobeChallenge with. She'd worn a similar outfit with a mustard yellow top and blue leopard print kimono. I knew I had the pieces to create a similar outfit, and loved wearing this! I've worn this yellow tank with blue printed shorts before, so this was a similar outfit.

We went out shopping to get Toddler T some winter clothes as it is starting to get cooler. As the boys were in the shopping trolley I felt brave enough to wear my beaded necklace, although again I took it off as soon as we got home as it's not baby friendly like my silicone teething necklaces.

How You Can Wear It:

Yellow is a fun surprisingly wearable colour! Two easy ways to wear it are to wear a little or a lot of it! If you're unsure about it or find it too bold, try what I did in the first outfit and just add some yellow accessories to one of your favourite outfit formulas.
