Plain Henley Tops, Printed Jeans and Cosy Cardis: Winter SAHM Style

A plain top, printed jeans, a neutral cardigan and Converse makes an easy stay at home mum winter outfit.

I have a few long sleeve henley tops I packed away with my winter things that I've been trying to make an effort to wear again. In the last official month of winter I'm not sure I'll have many more chances to wear them!

What I wore:

Why I wore it:

If you saw my Insta stories you might know I was lucky enough to be given a few new teething necklaces by Dee from Nibbly Bits. This peach feather pendant is one of the ones I got, it goes nicely with a lot of outfits. I've shared my love for teething necklaces before, so I'm thankful to add some new ones to my wardrobe!

I love these pink leopard print jeans - I tend to wear them with grey a lot as I like pink and grey together but they look just as good with other neutrals like this black Henley. I actually ended up taking the cardigan off during the day - we went out to the local Quandamooka festival. While I didn't try a BBQ roo, croc or emu kebab we did enjoy walking around and meeting some of the boys' friends from daycare.

Unfortunately our lovely morning out turned into a stressful afternoon with an unexpected doctor's visit for Baby Boy - I was grateful for having the teething necklace on as it kept him amused in the waiting room.

Why I wore it:

A busy day! It was a little chilly in the morning when I wore this so I added the scarf. I thought this one wouldn't compete too much with the print on the jeans. While I loved the pop from the teal henley with the black and grey, I wasn't too sure about the scarf. Kept me warm though so met its purpose!

Had our local ABA meeting in the morning, but sadly we had to leave early to go to another doctor's appointment for baby boy. It's a shame as it was a good discussion topic too - talking about birth experiences and the first breastfeed. While my baby days are behind me, I think birth stories are fascinating, so many different ways our little ones make their arrivals into the world!


I'm so incredibly lucky to be able to return to work part time, but I am finding it difficult on my days off to cram everything in - the time goes so quickly! I know we will hit a rhythm soon. With winter coming to an end hopefully we will have less sickness and doctor visits too. I love our GP and everyone there at the surgery but it would be nice not to see them all so often.

If you're not sure what to wear with a printed piece, go plain! If you have a pair of printed jeans, dress, or top, pick a simple basic to wear with them. In this case, I picked two plain henleys. One a nice neutral black against the colourful print, and the other a pop of teal colour with the black and grey.

Printed Tanks, Cardigans, Colourful Bags & Skinny Jeans

I've mentioned before I'm happy to keep my summer pieces out and wear them year round. On a mild winter day (which is most winter days in Brisbane to be honest) all I need is a cosy cardi on top and it's perfect.

Why I wore it:

First wearing of these new jeans! I was lucky enough to know someone doing the $5 challenge who saved more than they expected and decided to surprise people by using the money to treat them. (Can't share who it was as they are surprising multiple people!). I said I didn't need anything with my no-buy challenge, but there is that loophole where if someone else buys it for you it's not breaking the challenge! 😉

I went into Jeanswest, just for a look, and saw these jeans which were the perfect candidate to replace my old (10 year +) grey jeans I wasn't entirely happy with. I prefer a higher rise now. Super excited to have something new in my wardrobe, although it does mean saying goodbye to these old jeans. They had a good run and hadn't been worn a lot recently - I can see very few times in the past few years I've had the blog anyway.

As this was a quiet day, just a couple errands and grocery shopping, I decided to try something I'd been thinking about for a while and pairing the similarly coloured magenta bag and cardigan together. I actually really liked the combination! It was good to get this old tank out too. It hasn't been worn in a while after outgrowing it in pregnancy.

Why I wore it:

A much more colourful printed tank in this outfit! :) The last time I wore this tank it was the height of summer and despite the heatwave we headed out to see Thomas the tank engine at the rail museum.

Although it was winter this time around, I ended up swapping my thick wool cardigan for this thinner one, as it looked like it might warm up. It was again a hot and sunny day, I was pleased I picked the thinner cardigan! I loved this tank, bag and cardigan together when I wore it with flares so I knew I'd like the combination again with different jeans.


Had a lot of fun with the boys running around the museum and playing with all the Thomas toys, and it was good being able to take a picture in the same spot with the same tank but a different season! Just goes to show you don't have to put all your summer tanks away when winter arrives.

How You Can Wear It:

Your summer printed tanks can still be layered up and worn in winter with a cosy cardigan. Layering with printed pieces doesn't have to be tricky. For a neutral printed tank, try a plain block colour cardigan like in the first outfit. Neutral layers work well with a textured and colourful printed tank too. Monochromatic greys and black like in the second outfit make a colourful printed tank really pop.

Wrap Tops In Winter With Skinny Jeans, Converse and Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandouliere

Although you don't seem to see wrap tops around on blogs as often now, I still love the style and I especially love how breastfeeding friendly they are! If you're on a budget it's better to buy a regular wrap top instead of paying the high price for a special 'breastfeeding brand' wrap top. They are the same product.

While wrap tops are nice to wear, they are a little plain so I added a print to my outfit for a little something extra.

Why I wore it:

Wore this as I wanted something nice and comfortable and practical for Baby Boy's orientation day at day care. It basically means I get to spend the day there with him getting him used to the room and the routine so it's not a big shock for him when I go back to work. It was fun, although I did end up covered in pasta sauce. Better than toddler T's orientation day where my shirt got ruined!

As I was going to be inside all day, I just needed a light layer so this striped duster cardigan was perfect.

I did regret adding the silicone teething necklace to this outfit though. I thought it would comfort Baby Boy to have it to play with if he got upset and needed cuddles, but I underestimated exactly how attractive the bright beads are to babies! Lots of the other kids at daycare tried to grab it a few times, oops.

Was nice wearing this wrap top again as it had been packed away with my winter things. While it's sold out in blue as this is from last year, it's still available in red.

Why I wore it:

Unfortunately, the meeting we had planned for this morning was cancelled after the other person had been up all night with an unwell teething baby and slept through their alarm. I've done that a few times myself! Decided to spend the time grocery shopping instead since we were all up and ready. Not as exciting, but a good way to use the free time we suddenly had.

A few more layers with this wrap top as I was going outside and winter weather is definitely here in Queensland. Added the cobalt scarf for a bit of colour and to cover up the v shaped neckline and keep my chest cosy. Because I added the blue scarf, I wore my blue mac as well. I really liked this combination and it was a good way to add some colour to an otherwise monochromatic outfit with the grey wrap top and printed jeans.

The usual fashion advice is to not buy into trendy pieces. However, like these wrap tops, if the trend is something that works for you and your lifestyle, go for it! Trends are a fun way to try something different, and you could find yourself with a new favourite style. Most trends (like off the shoulder) I let pass me by but wrap tops are so perfect for breastfeeding I just had to buy 3 of them!

I'm going to continue to wear these tops in the years to come, even if they aren't the trendy thing any more, as they work for me. As a very wise and stylish lady once said: wear it because you love it, not just because it's what's 'in' at the moment.

Colourful Winter Dressing: Printed Jeans with Pink and Cobalt

I love blue and pink together, so I like to wear it year-round. While I do tend to wear more neutrals in winter (it makes layering easy as everything goes), it's nice to add a little bit of colour or a fun print to your outfit sometimes. The cobalt leather jacket I'm wearing in the outfits below is both cosy and colourful, and paired with pink it makes for a cheerful winter outfit.

A neutral bag is an essential in both outfits while I have so much else going on with the prints and colour.

Why I wore it:

Had a busy but kid-free few hours when I wore this. The beading on this ombre tank is beautiful but I worry about how it will hold up with tiny little grabby hands so it's been a while since it was last worn! I was pregnant with Baby Boy when I last wore it. 😲 Definitely a piece that feels more special and doesn't get worn for everyday stay at home mum duties.

When I was thinking of what to wear and putting this outfit together I worried it maybe had a little too much going on, with the beaded ombre tank, bright cobalt jacket and printed jeans. But I loved this final outfit. The neutral Balenciaga bag was a good choice so it didn't compete with all the print and colour. I was happy and comfortable all day, despite running late to almost every appointment, oops.

Why I wore it:

This was what I wore for the instagram style challenge prompt of 'shop your wardrobe'. Which applies to every outfit I've worn since my last purchase in December! I didn't plan anything special to meet the style challenge prompt for the day, I just wanted to wear this tank and the leopard print jeans together as I thought it would be a nice combination.

Again I went with a neutral bag, the metallic mini MAC, as my outfit felt quite busy already with the colours and print together. I felt completely different in this outfit compared to the one above though. I'd been so sure about this as I planned it out in my head, only to put it on in the morning and felt it was missing something. I added the necklace but I'm still not sure that was what the outfit needed - maybe a scarf instead.

As we were running late for books and rhymes at the library I just wore it anyway. Not one of the worst outfits I've worn, as I didn't completely hate it, just another of those cases where the outfit doesn't look as good as you think it will in your head! I did really like the cobalt jacket and leopard print jeans together at least - I'll have to try that again soon.

How You Can Wear It:

While neutral layers are practical and make winter layering easy, you can have some fun with your outfit by adding more colour, as statement print, or both! If you're experimenting with colour and prints in your outfit, you might want to pick a classic neutral handbag that won't compete for attention.

Summer tanks can be a fun addition to your winter wardrobe, and with the right layers can be worn year round. While I'm wearing a colourful leather jacket above, a bright cardigan or scarf would work just as well to add more colour. Printed jeans can also be worn year-round to add another element of interest to your outfits.

Monochrome Winter Outfits With Colourful Touches and Silver Mini MAC Bag

It's the middle of winter here in Brisbane and I tend to go for darker neutrals more when it gets cold as it makes layering easy! A completely monochrome black or grey outfit, while easy to put together, doesn't seem very cheerful, so I usually add in a little touch of colour with my accessories.

I'm wearing my neutral metallic silver mini MAC bag in both of these outfits, so added some colour in other ways.

An easy playgroup outfit! The style challenge for #witnerStyleFile on Instagram was 'monochrome Monday' which I thought would be easy enough to do, but the outfit looked a little dull before I added in the teething necklace for just a little pop of colour!

With the red nail polish and the pink and purple necklace, I felt I met the monochrome challenge while still being happy and having just a touch of colour.

This striped duster swishes around beautifully as I walk so I messed around a little in front of the tripod in the morning to catch a photo of it in all it's twirly beauty. Worked out quite well I thought!

Another easy outfit. We had playgroup again in the morning and then a doctor's appointment and a trip to the chemist in the afternoon. You get exposed to so many bugs in winter when you have kids!

This is incredibly similar to the outfit above, but with a black tee and grey jeans and jacket, reversing the black jeans and jacket and grey tee before. The style challenge for the day was 'scarf out loud', and the monochromatic outfit was the perfect backdrop for this bright and colourful tartan scarf. A tartan scarf might seem a little loud, but I love the colours in this one and find it really wearable - especially when the rest of my outfit is full of neutrals like this.

Easy Way To Wear Colourful Jeans In Winter: Matching Scarves, Stripes and Converse

Bright and colourful denim is a nice way to step away from the blue jeans rut while still being just as easy and practical to wear. Stripes go with everything, and in winter it's fun to add a similarly colourful scarf with your bright jeans for easy accessorising.

Picking a scarf that matched the skinny jeans is the way I've worn both the outfits below, and while I liked both outfits I had very different days when I wore them.

Why I wore it:

Having a couple of hours kid free to run some errands and go to appointments gave me the chance to get this lovely Balenciaga part time bag out again. I just love the slouch on this bag!

I tried a little double denim to meet an instagram style challenge when I wore this earlier in June, but even then it was a little cold and despite the big blanket scarf I wished I'd worn something a little cosier. This was such a nice outfit though, even with the less than ideal denim jacket not keeping me as warm as I'd like. Comfortable, easy to wear, and I had a very productive day when I wore it so it was a winner.

Why I wore it:

I enjoyed the outfit combination above so much that when I was feeling uninspired and not sure what to wear a few weeks later I decided to wear a similar outfit with my red skinny jeans - but with a warmer cardigan this time instead of the denim jacket like in the outfit above.

This day started out perfectly with a little lie-in of 10 minutes. It doesn't sound like much, but when you have kids getting an extra 10 minutes to lie in bed before they wake up is amazing! We had a busy morning with a doctor's appointment for Baby Boy and a trip to the pharmacy. When we got home I wasn't feeling the best, and tried to take it easy for the rest of the day.

Taking it easy was a good idea as that evening Baby Boy got extremely unwell and we had to call an ambulance. Thankfully we were out of hospital in the early hours of the morning after a few tests, but it's hard to like this outfit as much as the one above when it was such a horrible day when I wore it! I often find I'm harsher on my outfits if I'm not having a good day, even if it would otherwise be something I like wearing.

How You Can Wear It:

If you're worried that a colourful pair of jeans would be too difficult to style, follow the easy outfit formula of pairing them with neutrals and then a similarly bright accessory. While in winter a scarf that's the same colour as your bright jeans is a good idea, you could make this work in other seasons with a necklace for a similar, more season-appropriate look. And when in doubt, stripes really do go with everything!
