Navy Stripe Maxi Skirt 2 Ways with Blue and Purple

A few weeks ago I went out Christmas shopping with family. I took the opportunity to stop by a few stores and try on some clothes while someone else could wrangle the boys outside of the changerooms! I shared some of the shopping on my insta stories. As well as getting some gifts, I got a couple of things for myself.

When we reached Target I went straight for the maxi skirts and saw this pretty navy one. Luckily for me, my mum bought it for me for an early Christmas present! I was eager to wear it right away.

This was a great gift as I find the Target maxi skirts absolutely perfect. With comfortable elastic waists it's easy to get a good fit and the two I already own were some of my favourite pieces in pregnancy. Not sure about taller people as it looks more midi length on the website, but they are the perfect length for my petite self. They last too - the other two I have have been worn pretty regularly for 2 and a half years and across two pregnancies and they still look new. Really happy to be adding a third to my wardrobe.

What I wore:

denim jacket purple tank navy stripe maxi skirt Spring SAHM style | AwayFromBlue

metallic silver Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC bag | AwayFromTheBlue
SunniesRay-Ban new Wayfarers
Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
Necklace: Nibbly Bits Abacus teething necklace in pop
TankJeanswest Jenni basic singlet in Royal Lilac purple
Skirt: gifted Target navy side split maxi skirt
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagRebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC (on sale in metallic pink!)

Why I wore it:

I like blue and purple together so thought this tank would be great with the navy skirt. Added the denim jacket as it was a little cooler in the morning.

I have quite a large collection of these fitted tanks in many different colours but as I've mentioned before I'm not a fan of feeding in public in them as I feel a little too exposed. I'm trying to wear them on days like this, where I only have to be out for a little while between feeds. I popped out to do a little bit more Christmas shopping. Starting to get overwhelmed with how much there is to do to get ready - but so excited too as it will be Baby Boy's first Christmas.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarerdenim jacket, purple tank, Havaianas, metallic silver mini MAC. First time I've worn the skirt.

Other ways to wear: denim jacket and a maxi skirt, purple tank and a pencil skirt, silver mini MAC and a dress.

What I wore:

Necklace: Ruby Olive Softies Charlotte teething necklace

Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch C/O JORD
BagLouis Vuitton MM damier azur neverfull

Why I wore it:

Unlike the purple tank above, this navy one is a special breastfeeding one and is the most discreet feeding top I have. It was perfect to wear for a specialist appointment at Mater in the city for Baby Boy, as I had to feed him in the waiting room. Wanted a big bag to carry all the files and things I needed for the appointment so my Louis Vuitton neverfull was ideal.

I thought this navy tank and skirt would be a nice pairing together. I really liked this monochrome combination. Even if the two shades of navy don't perfectly match!

The checkered print on the bag and the stripes on the skirt were a bit of a stretch to meet the "print and pattern" style challenge for #RuleBreakersClub on Instagram too.

Last worn: navy breastfeeding tank, striped maxi skirt (above), studded gladiator sandals, Louis Vuitton Neverfull.

October Purchases and Clothing Wishlist

Almost the end of October already! Sharing what I bought and how I wore it.

Like I mentioned last monthOctober is Buy Nothing New month. I didn't meet the challenge as I couldn't resist the Shopbop sale...but I did browse more often in the op-shops (thrift stores). I managed to find some pieces I wanted there too.

A little over two years ago, I set myself a goal of wearing things twice in a month after buying them. I've recently changed that to wear things twice in the month that I buy them. It gives me less time to wear things if I buy them near the end of a month, and makes me think even more critically when I'm buying. Near the end of a month I have to think 'do I really need this?' and 'will I wear it twice in just a couple of weeks?'. Often I chose not to buy, which is great for my budget, and wardrobe!

So here's what I bought in October:

How I Wore It:

The only thing I haven't worn twice or more is the grey tee, but as mentioned in the video that's partly because I have a lot of grey tees and partly because I bought it so close to the end of the month.

Overall I think I did pretty well, especially after shopping so little over the past few months with #noBuyJuly and #noSpenderSeptember. It's made me use my own wardrobe more to see the gaps. While there are still some things I'd love to buy I haven't found the perfect pieces yet and so I'll keep looking. I'm going to try to not settle for anything less than perfect. It's not like I don't have any clothes to wear if I don't buy these things!

This is my current clothing wishlist:

  • white v-neck tee that isn't see-through
  • basic block colour relaxed fit tank without super low arm holes that show off a bra
  • boyfriend denim shorts (I miss my maternity ones!)
  • dresses I can breastfeed in
  • block colour maxi skirts

Pretty much just wanting to focus on adding more basics to my wardrobe! Would love recommendations if you know where I could find anything on my wishlist above.

Simple Spring Outfit: Grey Tee, Skinny Jeans, Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Mini Bag

If I had to pick just one most versatile item of clothing, it would be a grey tee. Although I don't have the 14 I used to, I still have quite a few in my wardrobe. Far more than anyone reasonably needs... You can't beat a classic skinny jeans and grey top combination though, it's simple spring dressing!

A good grey handbag is another versatile piece that goes with everything. The Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Mini bag I'm wearing and love so much has been discontinued, but I've been able to find a few second hand ones that I have listed below - all under $200! Use the code 'FALLFAVES' for an extra 20% off too! If you're looking elsewhere for one, it can be called a MAM or mini MAB as well.

What I wore:

spring outfit grey tee and skinny jeans Rebecca Minkoff MAM Bag | Away From Blue

Rebecca Minkoff MAB mini in soft grey | Away From The Blue
NecklaceTiffany diamonds by the yard necklace layered with Tai gold alphabet necklaces
Tee: Spectrum basic v-neck tee in grey marl
JeansJeanswest Super Skinny Jeans in Mid Indigo
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual plus silver charm bracelet
BagRebecca Minkoff MAB mini in soft grey (20% off with code FALLFAVES)

Why I wore it:

I didn't try meet the style challenge for the day I wore this - I picked the simple grey tee and jeans combo to wear to our family photoshoot. At the baby expo a few months ago I entered a competition and actually won a photo session!

When toddler T was 6 months old we used a gift voucher we were given to get some family photos so I was so excited to be able to get updated ones now baby boy is 6 months old. They suggested bringing along a few outfit changes, but with a toddler and an infant and a dog to get photos of, I figured one outfit was enough and we just went casual in denim. I bought the boys little matching tees too and they looked adorable! I'm looking forward to seeing the resulting photos.

Last worn: grey tee, skinny jeans, Havaianas, Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAB.

Other ways to weargrey tee in the office, skinny jeans and blazer, Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAB and maternity pencil skirt.

Where to Buy the Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Bag:

Although discontinued, consignment sites like the Real Real have Rebecca Minkoff Morning After bags in stock now and then. Make sure to use code 'FALLFAVES' on the bags above to get an extra 20% off!

What I wore:

Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch C/O JORD
BagRebecca Minkoff MAB mini in soft grey (20% off with code FALLFAVES)

Why I wore it:

The style challenge for the day was 'simple', so again I wore a grey and denim combo. Instead of the delicate and sentimental necklaces I wore above, I went for a big teething necklace. It added a nice bit of colour to my outfit, and helped keep baby boy amused! Was a quiet day, spent some time with my mother in law in the afternoon.

If you're looking for more ways to wear the Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAB, see my other video on youtube.

August Purchases

After not buying anything for #NoBuyJuly16 I didn't buy as much as I thought I would in August. I picked up the dress I'd had my eye on in July after it went on sale again, and another wrap top from Atmos&Here. With the 30% off at Jeanswest for rewards card members I filled up my cart, but never bought anything in the end. With the official start of spring later this week I thought it best to wait and see what I end up wearing a lot of and where any wardrobe gaps are before I buy any more clothes.

What I bought in August:

How I wore my purchases:

Continuing with my goal of wearing things twice in a month after buying them, I've worn both things twice. Since I only bought two things this month, it was really easy to wear them both. I think they are pieces that will get a lot more wear as the weather heats up and we move into spring. I would have liked to have found a replacement for my black maxi skirt since I returned the midi skirt but after the hassle and cost of hemming the last skirt I bought I'm happy to wait a little longer until I can get the right one for my short self. Or until I find another local tailor!

As well as making sure I can think of two ways to wear things immediately before I buy, I'm starting to add things to my cart and then come back another day to buy them only if I've still been thinking about it. Not sure how I'll carry on with this pattern when I'm back to shopping in stores, right now with two boys under 3 online shopping is my main way to shop. It seems to be working to slow my spending for the moment.

I will be attempting #noSpenderSeptember next month and seeing if I can replicate July's no buy month in September too! I got the idea from Beth at Almost Posh. Wish me luck!

Two Ways To Wear: Chambray Maxi Skirt in Winter

Back in April, Beth over at Almost Posh blogged about a beautiful chambray maxi skirt. I fell in love with everything about it except the price. I added it to my Iconic wishlist anyway and waited for a sale. 2 months later it finally went on sale and I had an extra % off discount code so it was the perfect time to buy!

What I wore:

Blue chambray maxi skirt pink and purple accessories | Away From Blue

Mulberry regular Alexa bag in foggy grey and chambray maxi skirt | AwayFromTheBlue
JacketJeanswest Peggie kimono cardigan in purple mulberry marle
ScarfAlexander McQueen modal skull scarf in white/pink (on sale in black and white!)
TopDorothy Perkins 3/4 sleeve wrap top (new purchase, on sale!)
SkirtNoisy May long denim maxi skirt (new purchase, on sale!)
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in white (on sale in red!)
BagMulberry regular Alexa bag in foggy grey

Why I wore it:

Sine The Iconic share measurements for most of their items, I knew this skirt would be too long for my petite self. However when I got it I was pleased to find I could wear it right away...just by pulling it up super high. The elasticated waist helped! Felt really happy in this all day, and cosy for a morning at playgroup with the boys. The wrap top is a new purchase too, although the wrapped portions are held together with a stitch you can open it up below there so it's easy to breastfeed in.

Last worn: purple cardigan, skull scarf, Converse, Mulberry Alexa. First time I've worn the wrap top and chambray skirt as they are new purchases.

Other ways to wearpurple cardigan and a black outfit, skull scarf and stripes, Converse and denim shorts, Mulberry Alexa and a maxi dress

More denim maxi skirts:

I might be doing #noBuyJuly16 and avoiding the sales, but there are some great bargains to be had in the final reductions at a few places:

What I wore:

Noisy May Chambray maxi skirt striped tee grey cardi purple accessories | Away From Blue

Mulberry Foggy Grey Alexa Satchel handheld | Away From Blue
SunniesRay-Ban new Wayfarers (30% off at Nordstrom!)

TeeAtmos&Here navy stripe v-neck tee
SkirtNoisy May long denim maxi skirt (on sale!)
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs silver tuxedo flats (on sale!)
BagMulberry regular Alexa bag in foggy grey

Why I wore it:

I liked the pink and purple the first time I wore this maxi skirt, so decided to wear it with purple again. Blue and purple is one of those colour combinations I love to wear.

I didn't like this outfit as much as the first one though. It had been raining early in the morning and so when we hopped out the car at the post office I stepped right in a puddle, wetting the hem of the skirt. It just dragged the skirt down to my waist again, making it much too long. By the time we'd arrived at the ABA group catch up I was regretting my decision to wear this without belting it in place or without getting it hemmed first.

As it's the second time I've worn this skirt, my purchase review:
I adore this skirt. So much that I wore it twice before getting it hemmed as I was too eager to wear it!
Once I find a new tailor to hem this skirt it will get worn a lot more often - it really is perfect in every way except the length. It has pockets! Even with the cost of a tailor it's still a pretty affordable skirt, and I did know I'd need to get it taken up so I'm happy with this purchase.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer, grey cardigan, purple scarf, striped tee, chambray maxi skirt (above), ballet flats, Mulberry Alexa (above).

Other ways to weargrey cardigan and flares, purple scarf and skinny jeans, striped tee with orange, ballet flats and skinny jeans, Mulberry Alexa and denim shorts.

Monthly Purchases: June

May was a pretty big shopping month for me, so I decided not to buy much in June...then the Iconic had an extra % off sale items. I couldn't resist picking up a maxi skirt I' d had my eye on for months after seeing it on Beth's blog, and of course I had to add in a few extra things to get free shipping ;)

In the end I only kept 3 of the things I'd ordered and returned another 3 so I'm quite pleased I didn't buy too much this month. Definitely going to be doing No Buy July again this year though! No clothes or accessories purchases for the next month. I didn't quite achieve it last year, hopefully I can do better this year! Here's what I bought before starting #NoBuyJuly16.

What I bought in June:

How I wore my purchases:

I have a goal of wearing things twice in a month after buying them. By setting myself this goal I'm making sure I'm only buying things I'll actually use now, and not just store in my wardrobe with the tags on. My wardrobe is full enough already! I'm trying to make sure I buy versatile pieces I can wear a few different ways too. I've started a Ways to Wear series to show the different ways I've been wearing what I bought. Really pleased I managed to wear everything twice this month!

Since we are halfway through the year already, I thought I'd do a tally on my spending so far. (I got this idea from Beth too, it's not just shopping inspiration she gives me!) I've spent a total of $1,510.77 which averages $251.80 a month. Most months, like this month, I'm well under that total. Considering I've bought 3 handbags this year I'm surprised the total is relatively low, but I'm hoping that for the second half of the year I can spend even less.

2 Ways to Wear: Khaki Embroidered Peasant Tank and Jeans

Last month while out shopping with Beth we stopped by Target on the way home. I spotted this tank while browsing the sales racks. A neutral colour, flowy fabric, generously sized enough to fit my very different postpartum curves and just $10, it came home with me.

To ensure I'm buying things I'll actually wear, I have a goal of wearing everything I buy at least twice in a month after purchasing. Below are the two ways I've worn this tank so far. Both outfits accessorised with another new purchase, my hot pink mini MAC bag. I love the neon pink with the neutral khaki.

What I wore:

khaki embroidered peasant tank striped duster flared jeans winter boho style | AwayFromBlue

silver bracelet stack, Rebecca Minkoff hot pink mini MAC bag | AwayFromTheBlue
Jacket: Kmart striped maxi cardigan
Top: Target embroidered khaki tank
JeansJeanswest 'spoylt' flared jeans
ShoesWalnut Melbourne 'Ava' black lizard ballet flats (also available in grey)
BagRebecca Minkoff neon pink mini MAC (on sale!)

Why I wore it:

First time wearing this tank and I knew I wanted to pair it with this striped cardi and flares. I think this outfit would have looked even better with wedges, and maybe a felt hat...but neither of those things were practical for getting groceries with two boys under 2.

Last worn: striped duster, flared jeans, black ballet flats, Rebecca Minkoff hot pink Mini MAC bag. First time I've worn the tank as it's a recent purchase.

Other ways to wearstriped duster and grey dress, flared jeans and Converse, black ballet flats in the office, Rebecca Minkoff hot pink Mini MAC bag and a floral kimono.

Shop similar embroidered tanks:

What I wore:

khaki tank black prima denim skinny jeans hot pink mini MAC bag | Away From Blue SAHM style

Rebecca Minkoff neon pink mini MAC | AwayFromTheBlue
Jacket: Jeanswest brown marle waterfall cardigan
Tank: Target embroidered khaki tank
JeansJeanswest prima denim super skinny jeans in absolute black
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs black logo plaque ballet flats
BagRebecca Minkoff neon pink mini MAC (on sale!)

Why I wore it:

This was another outfit I had in mind when I was contemplating buying the tank. I thought the brown would look nice with the khaki. After putting it on I wasn't too sure about the embroidery with the print on the cardi, but gave it a go anyway. Comfortable for errands in the morning and spending time with the in-laws in the afternoon.

Since it's the second time I've worn this tank, my purchase review:

This was a complete impulse buy (I didn't even try it on). I'm glad I picked it up though. Brisbane winters are usually mild enough that I can still wear a sleeveless tank with enough layers, and I really like the embroidery detail. Getting a size larger than usual and it being a pretty relaxed cut to start with means it's really flowy, but I think it works with the style of top and it means I'm still quite covered when I lift one side up to breastfeed. I've got lots of other outfit ideas for this tank too, a sign of a great purchase. Really pleased I got this.

While it was an impulse buy, I did stop and take a few minutes to think about how I'd wear the tank and how it would work in my wardrobe before I bought it. I'm pleased that I'm getting into the habit now of thinking things through before I buy them, and reviewing them after I wear them means I better be able to prove it's a good purchase. Really pleased I've made this a shopping habit so I'm more mindful of what I buy.

It's the third time I've shared this pink Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC bag too. A nice short purchase review: I have a few mini MAC bags now, so I knew this would be a winning purchase! Really happy with it.

Last worn: brown marle cardigan, khaki tank (above), black skinny jeans, Marc Jacobs ballet flats, Rebecca Minkoff neon pink Mini MAC (above).

Other ways to wearprinted brown cardi and leopard print scarf, black skinny jeans and floral cami, Marc Jacobs ballet flats and flared jeans, Rebecca Minkoff neon pink Mini MAC and navy.

Maxi Skirts, Alexander McQueen Skull Scarves and Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAB Tote Bag

With the autumn temperatures slowly starting to arrive, it's been good to get my scarf collection out again. While baby is small I'm avoiding necklaces or extra bracelets he could get tangled in, but a scarf is so easy to remove when feeding and soft for baby to snuggle into.

What I wore:

Why I wore it:

Had some shopping to do in the morning and family came to visit in the afternoon. Wanted to add some colour to the black outfit with the colourful scarf and bag. Maxi skirt, stripes and colourful accessories - such a simple and practical outfit. I really liked wearing this.

Last worn: Ray-Ban wayfarer, pink and cream skull scarf, striped tank, black maxi skirt, Marc Jacobs ballet flats, Rebecca Minkoff mini MAB tote.

Why I wore it:

Because I really liked the maxi skirt and skull scarf combo above, I tried it again. And again I really liked it. Perfect for the daycare drop off / pick up and a doctor's appointment in the afternoon. I've worn the tee and skirt and the tee and scarf together before.

Wasn't sure if the burgundy tee and purple bag would go together though. I actually googled for 'burgundy purple outfits' during baby boy's late night feed (when I usually plan what I'll wear for the day!) to try and figure out if my outfit idea would work! I'm glad I gave it a go though. It was good to try a little something different and I think the purple looks nice with the burgundy.

Monthly Purchases: May

Despite buying a few things in April, I managed to buy quite a bit in May. I focused mainly on accessories as clothes shopping so soon after birth is tricky - it's difficult enough guessing what in your own wardrobe will fit, never mind trying to pick the right size from a store!

Lots of impulse buys but everything that is sure to work in my wardrobe over winter. It still feels strange to think that winter is just a few days away, with autumn being so warm. The weather is cooling though, already we have caught our first cold of the season. So no full video this month, I've lost my voice! I did take a reveal of my Yoox sale purchases before I got sick, so you get to see some of the things I bought in action but not all.

What I bought in May

How I wore my purchases:

Away From Blue Blog May Purchases: Winter Wardrobe Update

I have a goal of wearing things twice in a month after buying them. It means that when I buy something I've thought of two different ways to wear it, and that I can wear it right away. By doing this I'm hoping to add things to my wardrobe that will actually be useful and worn frequently.

Just like last month, I bought a necklace I haven't worn yet as I'm avoiding necklaces in the early days of breastfeeding. I know I'll wear it a lot in future though, I wear the silver version often, and it's nice to have a gold one of Cooper to match with the gold initial necklaces I have for the boys.

While I found it easy to wear the cardi and the top, I found the scarves trickier. As it's been a mild autumn I've been wanting to maximise the wearing of my kimonos before it gets too cold. I can't wrap my head around a kimono and scarf outfit, so the scarves haven't been worn much yet. I know I'll be wearing the scarves a lot more over winter though.
