Two Ways To Wear: Asymmetrical Striped Maxi Skirt With Little Red Bags

While this is the first time this maxi skirt is appearing on the blog, it's also the last time you'll see it! I picked it up as part of my "fill a bag of clothes for $5" opshop sale haul. A great thrift find, it was new with tags, a classic black maxi skirt with some fun features making it stand out. It's got a high-low hem and it's asymmetrical so the sides are longer. I really liked it as I twirled around in the little opshop change room and so into the bag it went.

Each time I've worn it though, the fun features made it a little annoying. When you divide the $5 by all the items I got it works out to around 63 cents so I'm glad I got some wears of it but hopefully now it's donated back, someone more graceful or taller will enjoy it!

What I wore:

Rebecca Minkoff unlined saddle bag in cherry red with striped maxi skirt | awayfromtheblue

Tee: thrifted Emerson navy slouchy tee
Skirt: thrifted Kmart black and grey knitted asymmetric maxi skirt in shadow
ShoesWalnut Melbourne 'Ava' black lizard ballet flats
BagRebecca Minkoff unlined saddle bag in cherry red (on sale in blue!)

Why I wore it:

I really liked this outfit! The striped scarf was a fun combination with the striped skirt, and the red accessories were a bold pop against the navy and black. The little red Rebecca Minkoff saddle bag  matched the red stripes in the skirt nicely.

The skirt was so good to wear in the playground on a hot day, nice and cool as it caught the breeze. It was only when we stopped on the way home to get groceries and the long side of the skirt kept billowing around and getting caught in the wheels of the trolley that I regretted my outfit choice! I contemplated getting the skirt altered so it was shorter, but I tend to wait until I have a pile of alterations to do at once as it's more cost effective (there's a lady I know that does everything at once and charges per hour). I didn't want to leave this skirt sitting unloved waiting around for me to build up a backlog of pieces to alter, so decided to give it one more try and if it didn't work, to donate it back.

Last worn: navy tee, striped scarf, black ballet flats, Rebecca Minkoff studded saddle bag. First time I've worn the skirt on the blog as it's a recent purchase.

The Most Used, Least Used and Cutest Bags In My Handbag Collection:

TeeZalora Basics maroon stepped t-shirt
Skirt: thrifted Kmart black and grey knitted asymmetric maxi skirt in shadow
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagRebecca Minkoff red micro Avery cross body bag

Why I wore it:

This outfit was the final straw for this beautiful but impractical skirt. I wasn't feeling well but powered through with swim lessons and an important appointment, so I threw on this easy and comfortable outfit. The slouchy burgundy tee was a nice casual option with the skirt. I did try tuck it in at first, but it wouldn't stay in place and I decided I preferred the long line of it untucked. For a little extra touch of colour with the black stripes I picked another red bag, my little Rebecca Minkoff micro Avery tote. It was a nice combination with the burgundy and black, and I've worn this red bag with burgundy before.

But the thongs (flip flops) were not a good choice with this skirt! After the longer edges of the hem getting caught between my feet and the sole and standing on the hem one too many times I resolved that I'd just donate this skirt back to the opshop. Hopefully the next person to pick it up will be a little less clumsy or a little taller and have less issues with the longer side hems!

Instead of a scarf I wore a statement necklace with this outfit, this fun flat bead one is one I recently thrifted.

Last worn: burgundy tunic, striped maxi skirt (above), Havaianas, Rebecca Minkoff micro Avery tote. First time I've worn the necklace as it's a recent purchase.

Striped Maxi Skirts Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

Even though I've donated this skirt back, I still have a few striped maxi skirts in my wardrobe and think they are a staple for mum-life! A striped maxi skirt looks great with a basic block-colour tee. You can add some extra contrasting colour with your accessories, or even try another print like I have with the striped scarf in the first outfit.

  1. I understand how you felt! Some clothing pieces are really annoying and there for your decision is easy explainable. Love nevertheless both of the effortless but beautiful looks.

  4. I love that red tee, I love the contrast against the dark skirt. Bummer that it didn't work out, but at least it wasn't much money wasted. Hopefully someone else will give it a good home :)

  5. That tis such a super cute skirt, Mica, but can totally see why ended up donating it. I must admit I LOLd on the thong thing and the skirt getting caught between ur toes coz that's something that would totally happen to me:D
BTW, love the tag vid:) I love that Mulberry bag you have. So lovely to hear the story behind it:)

  6. I can't even count all the times that I've absolutely loved a piece in a shop but slowly started to change my mind when I got it home and actually started wearing it - by all external appearances it really is a beautiful skirt!

  7. I usually stay away from maxi styles because I'm really short and don't find them too flattering on me, but I really like how you've styled this one here with a pop of colour x

  9. Love the burgundy and black combo! And don't you wish we had a crystal ball so we could tell exactly how well a piece would or wouldn't work for us? I hate when I find out something is too fussy but it's too late to return by that point. Oh well - at least you got some use out of it and it wasn't a splurge piece!

  13. I love your mindset on how you spend money on your purchases. I'm the same way. I divide it all by cost per wear to see if it's worth buying or keeping as well. I do this with not only my clothing, but the girls', as well as anything else really. It's good that you were able to get some use out of it though. Thanks for sharing and I hope you're having a great week so far!

  18. Such a shame you have to let go of that lovely skirt, but I think I'm hearing you, as I know these assymetrical skirts can be hazardous when you're not very tall. I should know ... My favourite is your first outfit. I love the matchy-matchy-ness of the scarf and bag! xxx

  20. Oh, grrr, that would drive me insane about that skirt - it wouldn't have lasted more than 1-2 wears with me. I won't stand for misbehaving clothes!

I really like your purses in these outfits - the slightly different colours really pop, and are very advanced colour-mixing! The second outfit is my fave: that red top (looks great untucked), your new necklace and that wonderful reddy-orange bag. Love it.

    Happy Wednesday, Mica!
