Floral Swing Dresses In Winter With Cardigans and Ankle Boots

Just as I try to wear most of my wardrobe year-round, I don't reserve prints for a particular season. While florals are great to wear in spring and summer, they are so easy to layer up for winter too, as I've done here with these light floral dresses.

What I wore:

ScarfLouis Vuitton monogram shawl in bleu
DressZaful floral print ruffle hem dress in ginger
ShoesAsos leather Chelsea boots in tan
BagRebecca Minkoff Regan Satchel Tote in moon

Why I wore it:

I didn't set out to wear this dress without a jacket. I'd planned to put a cardigan over the top, but quickly realised that the tight sleeves over the statement bell sleeves on this dress weren't going to work! I rushed out the door in the morning anyway as I had to drop the boys off at daycare and it wasn't too cold. When the rain set in later in the afternoon and I had to go to the dentist though I spent a few minutes hunting in my wardrobe and decided on a leather jacket, the thicker material hiding any bunching up of the sleeve. Next time I wear this dress I'll definitely have to wear it with a leather jacket!

This scarf helped keep me cosy too - with it being a wool blend it's so snuggly and warm to wear. I liked the bold blue against the mustard of the dress too, a great colour combination.

The red lip was me trying a Charlotte Tilbury lip tint I won in a giveaway a while back. A very bold red, I made the mistake of wearing it without makeup and think I really need makeup so my face doesn't look as deathly pale with it, ha!

While it wasn't a particularly exciting day, working from home with the daycare drop off / pick up and a dentist appointment, sometimes it's nice just to throw on a pretty dress anyway, and it's been a while since I last wore this one.

What I wore:

JacketJeanswest waterfall drape cardigan in scarlett marle
DressShein navy flower print flowy dress (C/O)
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagRebecca Minkoff striped coated canvas mini MAC in berry stripe

Why I wore it:

Unlike the first outfit, I didn't love this one as much! We had a relative over from Western Australia, and it's been so long since we last saw each other I'm not actually sure when we saw each other last! Now both grown up with kids, it was fun for the kids to get together and we headed into the city. I wanted to wear something pretty for our outing to seem a little dressed up so I decided on this floral dress, and thought the red cardigan would work nicely with it. I realised as I was about to rush out the door that while the colour combo looked nice, the shapes together didn't. I should have thrown a belt over this, but didn't have time so I wore it anyway.

Not my worst outfit, but definitely not my favourite. After walking around some markets in the city, we went to the Winter Wonderland ice rink in King George Square. They had a snow tubing slide set up where you could slide down some 'snow' (really more like ice!) of course all the kids wanted to do it, even Baby Boy. I ended up having to go with him as he was too little to go himself. 4 year old T was fearless and was happy to slide down himself with his new friend (as long as I dragged his snow tube up the stairs....!) and Baby Boy and I had to wiggle into one tube. Not a problem, just a little difficult to do in a dress, especially getting out the tube at the bottom of the hill with everyone watching!

45 minutes into the hour long session I had to admit defeat and I traded my ticket with hubby who took the little one up and down the hill.

After a very delicious lunch at the Pancake manor we said our goodbyes and headed home, where the boys had massive naps!

How You Can Wear It:

You don't have to pack away your floral dresses for winter weather. Try layering them up a bit with some winter essentials like tights and ankle boots, with a scarf or cardigan for an extra colourful and cosy layer.

  3. Both outfits are super cute, Mica, but I also prefer the first one. That yellow dress is such a great piece, and totally goes well with a leather jacket. LOLZ on riding the slide...I wouldn't have liked doing that wearing a dress too:P
Hope you're having a lovely week so far!

  4. Both of these dresses look fabulous layered up for winter, Mica! The tights look great with these dresses. It's great that you can get wear out of these pretty dresses year round! The colour combo of both outfits is fab. I love how the bag in the second outfit matches some of the pattern on your dress perfectly! Hope you're having a great week so far, Mica! XXX

  5. That's always my issue with my statement sleeves...which topper to wear? I don't mind too much if they get bunched up, but sometimes, they just don't fit!!
Both outfits are really perfect examples of how our lighter dresses can work in the cooler weather!!

  10. Dear Mica, I think you really can be satisfied with both looks as I like both looks. I agree that florals are also in winter suitable and I can imagine that the first look looked fantastic with the leather jacket you wore on the afternoon over it. And I'm impressed how you managed to get into the tube with the second look!

  11. Looking so dreamy in both outfits Mica, I adore how you styled both floral dresses, they make such a perfect print for winter. The ruffle details are so dreamy and I love the bright vibe. It goes so perfectly against the pop of blue from your scarf, super cute! The second dress looks so pretty against the red, and the snow tubing slide sounds so fun! <3

  14. I know the feeling...statement bell sleeves and jackets are often a challenge. Not once did I tried to pair the two and gave up.

I do love that first dress you're wearing. The mustard yellow is so pretty!!! and the floral print is just wow! I love how you styled it with that cobalt blue scarf. It's a gorgeous shade of blue and I'm sure that it being a wool blend, it made you feel warm and cozy. I love wool blends. I have one skirt that is a wool blend and I wear it often. Wool on its own can be too much, but when mixed with other materials, it is much more breathable but just as warm!

I do love the second outfit as well. You always look so fresh and pretty!

    1. Yes, I definitely had to give up with the mustard dress, it's not going to fit under a tight cardigan!

The scarf is so warm, it's perfect for winter!

  15. I agree! Florals can totally be worn in winter! I wouldn't wear a white or bright pink floral but these two are perfect!

  16. I adore that mustard dress on you - the colour and style are so good. It's a wonderful dress (I would wear it myself!). I also love the bold lippy on you, Mica! It took me a long time to get used to wearing lipstick, seeing my bright lips. It does help to throw on a little mascara or eyeliner to balance the lip, but honestly, you look great without make-up, so why bother!?

The second dress is also really cool, but I do agree with your "needs a belt" assessment - otherwise, it just hangs straight off your boobs. Sounds like a really fun (but exhausting) afternoon of inner-tubing, and a real adventure for the boys!

    1. Thanks so much Sheila! I think I need to try a few more times with the red lip before I give up - it is something I need to get used to as I'm not a red person! :) Definitely trying that dress with a belt next time!

  17. Your yellow dress would look so great with a leather jacket, and I know impossible sleeves are sometimes the reason I go for the jacket draped over shoulders look.

  20. Hello Dear Mica
I'm also of your opinion, your first look is much better than the second !!
I liked the dress, the colors, and the scarf more in the first than the second. I understand sometimes we are so hurried in the morning to leave home that we don't have time to compose the whole look, I also think that with the belt would have been much better. I hope you had fun with the kids !!

  22. Mustard and tan are lovely together! I agree with your comment about the second outfit, a belt would've given a nice shape, but still a cute outfit nonetheless... perhaps not so practical on a slide though haha! Sounds like a great outing with the kiddos.
