Maxi Dresses For Christmas Events (And Where To Get One Now For Christmas Day!)

It's no secret that I love maxi skirts and dresses. While I recently bought a lot of shorts for summer, you can't beat a classic maxi dress in December for all the Christmas related events. I almost always wear a maxi dress on Christmas day too, it's such a good choice. Comfortable for opening presents, running around with toddlers and nice and loose so you can indulge in all that yummy food!

The two jersey maxi dresses below are some of my fave wardrobe oldies. There's still plenty of time to order a maxi dress now and have it arrive before Christmas so you can wear it on Christmas day too!

What I wore:

family christmas photo outfit: Jeanswest 'Chantelle' printed empire jersey maxi dress | away from blue

blue maxi dress, silver bracelets, Rebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey | away from the blue
Necklace: Uniquely Made with Love Sea Change necklace
DressJeanswest 'Chantelle' crochet detail blue printed maxi dress
ShoesRebecca Minkoff Georgina studded gladiator sandals in blush
Bracelets: the usual plus silver charm bracelet
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey

Why I wore it:

I wore this a little while ago! We had our family Christmas photo, and as usual I went with the easy maxi dress option. I picked this one specifically as I'd bought the boys little blue poloshirts for the photo, and with hubby in a blue shirt too we were all perfectly themed but not too matchy matchy!

I had a bit of a giggle when we got to the photo area though - it was a blue background! We really coordinated! We usually go to Westfield for our photo, Chermside do pet Santa photos. Unfortunately they had cut their pet santa photos down to just 2 hours over the month and they were of course almost immediately booked out as a result. We ended up booking in with the RSPCA Santa Paws photos for the first time and while it was more expensive, the resulting photo was much better quality. Santa was very understanding too and they took the time to help and suggest things so we managed to get a good photo of us all despite our terrified toddler, who never got anywhere near as close to any other Santas we saw! I recommend them if you're looking for a photo with the whole family, we can't imagine our annual photo without Cooper!

Last worn: blue maxi dress, Rebecca Minkoff Georgina studded sandals, Rebecca Minkoff Love bag.

Christmas bow bracelet (with bells!) and Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold | awayfromtheblue

Necklace: Nibbly Bits Wilma teething necklace in pale daffodil
DressJeanswest 'Elodie' tie dye grey jersey maxi dress
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual plus Christmas bow bracelet (with bells!)
BagRebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold

Why I wore it:

Another Christmas event, another maxi dress! It seemed the most obvious choice for a Christmas party with the boys.  I like grey and yellow together, so when I saw one of the style challenges in Instagram for the day was 'bold hue', I knew I'd pick yellow accessories with this dress. I've worn the dress and bag together before, it's a nice combination. The little Christmas bow on my wrist was a fun addition for the party, and met yet another Instagram style challenge for 'tied'.

This was such a fun party for me to attend. Last year, we had been looking forward to it. I was in hospital with Baby Boy but we had been confident that we wouldn't be in there long, just a few days at most, which would mean we would be out for the party. Instead, we stayed there much longer than expected and the party marked day 6 in hospital as I continued to room in with Baby Boy. Toddler T's grandparents took him to the party solo instead. It was just a kid's party, but was quite emotional for me reflecting back on where we were last year. I didn't have time to dwell on it for long though, there was a lot to do and see and then we had to dash to swim lessons, and celebrate putting the Christmas tree up in the afternoon.

Last worn: tie dye maxi dress, Havaianas, Rebecca Minkoff Micro Regan bag.

Perfect for pregnancy: tie dye maxi dress at 38 weeks pregnant.

How You Can Wear It:

For me a maxi dress will always be a go-to over December. It's the perfect mum outfit as it's quick and easy to wear with minimal accessorising required, although you can add bright accessories if you want a bit of a pop. Maxi dresses are comfortable and casual enough for running around with toddlers but dressed up enough for parties and family Christmas photoshoots.

There is still enough time to order a special dress in for Christmas too, with great options under $50 at ASOS, Amazon or The Iconic linked above. I love next day shipping at the Iconic for last minute gifts too.

  2. I love both dresses, Mica! The colours of both dresses are so pretty and you've accessorised them so well! I emphathise with you refecting on when your baby boy was in hospital last year. It is such an emotional and stressful time and thinking about it brings back those emotions. My son was in and out of hospital so often until he was about 4 and it still makes me cry when I think about it! Luckily life is busy so we just get in with it! That's so cute that Cooper was in your family photo! I didn't even know you could do that! Hope your Christmas preparations are going well, Mica! :) XXX

  6. Looking fab in bot dresses, Mica! I tend to wear dresses too for the holiday season, but I don't have a lot of maxi dresses so I really wanna sew more for next year. And yay for a successful Santa pic:) I think it's so cute that you guys were all wearing blue.
PS Love the grey and yellow combo.

  9. Dear Mica,

You know I like you in maxi dresses and the two outfits you show here today are no exception! Unfortunately, my husband doesn't like me in maxi dresses and therefore, I decided not to wear a maxi dress at Christmas :)

Regarding your Christmas pictures: it is so cool that even the background was blue - perfect match to all the blue in your looks! Here in Bavaria it is not usual to take Christmas pictures, especially outside, as far as I know only some family took pictures by their own :)

Oh no, it's a shame he's not a fan of maxi dresses - but I'm sure you found something just as stylish and comfortable to wear for Christmas day :) It's such a tradition to have a Santa photo here - I've enjoyed putting it on our Christmas cards since we adopted Cooper, and then with having the boys too, it's fun to see the family grow! :)

  19. These are both great classic shapes and colours - perfect for being comfy at parties. I don't do the maxi dresses so much at this time of year (too cold!), but I wear a lot of maxi skirts (I'll have a doozy on this Friday!).

A year has come and gone so fast! Wishing you and your family (Cooper too!) a very Happy Christmas, and all the best to you in the New Year, Mica. I value you as a friend, and am so glad that you have stayed blogging all these years. Hugs, Sheila

  20. I really like the subtle tie dye of the second dress, not what you normally think of when you hear the words tie dye! I think both dresses are just great, and I am fully on board the maxi train having found a skirt at Kmart that I can pretend is long enough. I haven't stopped wearing it ever since I got it! I have one great tall maxi dress from Boden which I think I might just go for on Christmas day. It's blue as well!

Sorry to hear you've had painful memories brought up at this time of year, it's not always the most joyous time of year. But I'm so glad you're not in hospital this year (fingers crossed I haven't just jinxed it) and I really hope things continue to improve for baby boy this year :)

  23. I am biased to talk about maxi dresses or skirts, because they are my "uniform" :) They are so comfortable, so cozy, just excellent! I loved your looks, and had to smile when you said that for the photo, there was a blue background - it happened to me sometimes :) And the bags, Rececca Minkoff, just amazing! You look very beautiful! Hope you have a beautiful Christmas time!

I am hoping to get a simple photo of the kids in front of the tree today, I am SO behind on my Christmas cards. THey'll be a little late this year! Have a Merry Christmas! :)

  30. I'm super envious that you get to rock a maxi dress fro Christmas. It's winter in our part of the world and even though I like to dress up for the holidays I'm a wimp when it comes to the cold, so my outfit will probably be dictated by the weather ;p
