In the end I focused on some abstract pieces of western style. Ankle boots instead of cowboy boots for starters. While I could do double denim I don't have a pair of flared jeans, so double denim with Bermuda shorts it was! I added tan belts to both of these outfits (with mixed success) and my recent purchase, my mini Darren messenger bag worked as a tasselled crossbody, although it is a little more structured than I'd think of for a "Western style" bag!

Why I wore it:
Big thank you to my Mum for helping me complete this look! When I thought about trying double denim with a big belt with a statement buckle for this challenge I realised I didn't actually own a belt with a statement buckle. My mum had this thick tan leather one that perfectly matched my tan ankle boots though, so that was a winner. And as she doesn't wear it much any more, I got to keep it! Very pleased to add it to my wardrobe.I think this outfit is a little more "slight Western vibe" than a true Western style but I liked how the pieces came together with the plain tank, double denim, and turquoise necklace. I'd considered turquoise earrings too but I figured my everyday studs would be better for a day that had over 5 hours of meetings that I'd need to wear my headset for. Luckily, while I was at my parent's place all day working on my laptop, mum took the kids out to enjoy the school holidays down the coast, so they had a lot of fun while I was in endless meetings.

Why I wore it:
Another outfit that doesn't really scream "Western", but has little nods to the theme in it. I really love this dress, but the day and outfit didn't at all go according to plan! I'd stumbled across this $25 long sleeve black floral print dress in Kmart, reduced to $2, and just had to buy it. I had a night out planned with a friend so I figured this would be a good outfit to wear. And because it would be a little chilly by the water at night, I had picked out my black ankle boots to wear with it.Unfortunately, my son fell sick the night before so the night out was cancelled, and instead I spend the morning shopping for a few essentials to help him feel better. I figured I'd wear the pretty dress anyway, even if I wasn't going anywhere exciting.
This belt was the part of the outfit that didn't really go to plan. I figured it might make the dress work for a Western theme, although the belt isn't the big statement buckle wide belt I would have wanted, it was the best I could find in my wardrobe! Being pleather and having sat unworn in my wardrobe for a few years, it was flaking a little. I thought that with the relaxed fit of the dress, the extra fabric bunched over the belt would hide the flaking parts where you could see the white fabric underneath. The photos prove that wasn't quite the case, and I was a little confused when I looked down at my dress when getting into the car to drive home and realised that it was covered in little pleather belt flakes. It looked really bad! The belt went in the bin as soon as I got home!
Despite it not really meeting the theme, the day and the belt not going to plan, I was able to get some treats at the grocery store to cheer up my son and soften the blow of having to cancel my night out and his playdates over the next couple days. And thankfully fully recovered quickly!
Last worn: tan belt, black ankle boots, Rebecca Minkoff mini Darren bag (above). First time I've worn the dress as it was a recent purchase.

When you have a challenging theme to dress for, try thinking outside the box! You might not have the perfect pieces for a head to toe Western outfit, but you can try some western inspired accessories.

Oh wow, Mica, I think both of these outfits work perfectly for the Western theme! I prefer a more subtle Western vibe anyway more than full on cowgirl. I love that floral dress and what a fabulous deal! I have had pleather flakes snow all over my clothing before, too. And I have also been confused as to what it was! LOL I love that belt you acquired from your mom. I have a similar one that is probably 20 years old and one of my favorites. I need to get a leather puncher though because it is too big and needs more holes! You did a fabulous job creating two Western looks that suit you. Well done, my friend!

Thanks Shelbee, I definitely need to wear that belt more often, I'm glad she was eager to pass it on! :)
DeleteI'm glad your son is feeling better! I think you did a great job with the western theme!
ReplyDeleteI love that you took the western style and made it your own! Both looks are super successful. You can never go wrong with denim, floral prints, and ankle boots. This is definitely on theme in the best possible way. I absolutely love that purse, by the way. It is so gorgeous. Hope your week is going well so far <3
ReplyDeletethe creation of beauty is art.
Thanks! It was definitely a challenge this time around but it was fun finding ways to make it work in my wardrobe!
DeleteI'm loving your take on Western style, and I'm sure we'll be seeing more of your Mum's belt in future outfits. Also loving the dress, which looks absolutely stunning on you! xxx
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! it's such a pretty piece, it really deserves to be worn!
DeleteI think both outfits worked. I'm not a fan of the look, either, so I would have to buy stuff to fit it (if I were playing along). Actually, there's a school that's doing a western dress up day for a spirit week this week, and I was glad I wasn't going to be there that day as there would be no way for me to dress the theme (not that I really try to dress the themes anyway).
ReplyDeleteit is certainly a tricky theme to dress for, but I'm glad I kinda got the general vibe of it without needing to buy anything new!
DeleteYou are rocking those boots. So happy to hear your son is doing better.

I would be in the same boat with you as far as not really owning anything that would be considered 'western.' I don't have any cowboy boots either! I think you did a fantastic job with both of these outfits, and I really like the belt with the dress! I'm so sorry it ended up flaking off though, I'm sure that was annoying, especially with it getting all over your dress. That was so sweet of your mum to help you with your first outfit!
ReplyDeleteGlad your son is feeling better too, my friend! Wishing you a wonderful rest of your week! :)
Make Life Marvelous
Glad your son is doing better, Mica! I love both of your western-inspired outfits, and think you did a fantastic job, especially considering that you don't even have that "cowgirl" theme culturally in Australia! I think a couple of belts with bigass buckles are definitely needed in your wardrobe - these are pretty easy to find in thrift stores (check the men's section too - you can always add holes). I'd advise a brass/gold buckle and a silver one, just so you have both metals.
ReplyDeleteI love the dress - it's so pretty. Put your mum's belt with it next time!
I do have an awesome one I found when hunting through my belts but it was red and didn't quite work with these outfits - an old opshop find I haven't worn in years, but really need to get out again as it's so fun!
DeleteI think both Western outfits came together wonderfully Mica. I like that you used what you had and in my eyes, it's even better when you just have a nod instead of looking like a costume.

Yes I'm glad I was able to kinda nod to the theme with the few pieces I did have in my wardrobe! It was a fun challenge!
DeleteSubtlety is a great way to embrace a trend while staying true to your own style. Your double denim look is an awesome example of how it can be done. The floral dress with booties ensemble is also a winner.

While not full blown “western,” your first outfit does have a distinctly western vibe - and it looks great! The dress is so pretty!

Boy, I would be stumped if I had to do a "western" outfit! You did a great job! I also just really like the floral dress, "theme" or no theme, haha!
ReplyDeleteI was so stumped, I blew up the group chat trying a few options, haha! It was nice to try something different!
