Linen Outfits In Winter: Magnificent 8 Style Challenge

It's time for another Magnificent 8 collaboration post! This quarter's theme is linen. Very easy for the 7 other ladies in the US to do, where it's summer right now, but it required a little more planning to wear some linen outfits in winter here in Australia! Surprisingly I was able to come up with 2 perfect winter outfits, both featuring bright and colourful linen pieces.

What I wore:

alexander mcqueen skull scarf with denim jacket linen blend kmart fuchsia dress with ankle boots leggings winter | awayfromblue

denim jacket with Rebecca Minkoff Edie regular shoulder bag in Luna blue | awayfromtheblue

Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
ScarfAlexander McQueen skull scarf in light blue
Dress: thrifted Kmart short sleeve godet skirt linen blend dress in fuchsia
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
Bracelets: the usual
BagRebecca Minkoff Edie regular shoulder bag in Luna blue

Why I wore it:

I love wearing this bright fuchsia dress on a rainy day! This was a warmer winter day thanks to the rain and cloud cover so it was fine to go partially bare armed with this denim jacket. When I thrifted this dress back in November last year (for just $1!) I knew it was a piece I could try wearing year round. It was the first thing that came to mind when Jodie suggested the linen theme for our Magnificent 8 collaboration.

Adding the pretty blue skull scarf, denim jacket, and leggings and ankle boots was an easy way to make this summer dress much more suitable for winter temperatures. I decided to leave the dress unbelted too as the denim jacket added a bit of waist definition.

I really liked this outfit, even if the linen dress did get a bit crushed, with taking the kids to and from their school holiday program, and working from home during the day. Was perfectly colourful and cosy in this, such a good winter outfit!

Last worn: denim jacket, pastel skull scarf, fuchsia linen blend dress, ankle boots, Rebecca Minkoff Edie shoulder bag.

My Rebecca Minkoff Handbag Collection:

Jacket: Jeanswest Kitty denim biker jacket
Scarf: Love Quotes knotted tassel linen scarf in sunshine yellow
Dress: thrifted Kmart white and navy long sleeve stripe tee dress
ShoesAsos Cleo leather boots in tan
Bracelets: the usual
BagRebecca Minkoff Edie regular shoulder bag in Luna blue

Why I wore it:

I actually felt really overdressed in this outfit at lunchtime, as I wore this back at the start of July, on a beautifully sunny weekend when it got hot in the middle of the day. It was a cold morning though and we had an early start with my son off for a playdate at his friend's house. We are at the stage of drop off and leave them for a few hours playdates which is an adjustment for me - but he loves it! When I went to go pick him back up at lunch time from one of his best friend's houses the jacket definitely wasn't needed - the day had heated up so nicely!

It's not the first time I've layered up a summer dress with this cosy yellow scarf - I love how it pops against the light blue of the denim moto jacket and the navy stripes on the dress. Linen is a nice light fabric, but there is so much of it in this linen tassel scarf that it keeps me quite cosy! And is beautifully colourful too.

Again I wore my Rebecca Minkoff Edie bag - so nice with the different shades of blue in the outfit.

Last worn: moto denim jacket, yellow linen scarf, navy stripe dress, tan knee high boots, Rebecca Minkoff Edie shoulder bag (above).

Other ways to wearmoto denim jacket in double denim outfit, yellow linen scarf and maxi dress, navy stripe dress with pink scarf, tan knee high boots worn 30 ways, Rebecca Minkoff Edie shoulder bag and culottes.

How You Can Wear It:

While it might be tricky pulling off big chunky winter knits in summer, you can definitely wear linen year round! Make sure to layer up with a scarf, cosy jacket, some boots and maybe even leggings!

  1. Mica, these are both such great outfits! I really love the bright pink dress and how you found these wonderfully creative ways to style linen in the winter. The yellow scarf is super fun, too! Brilliant, my friend!

I have been been dropping off my 9 year at theater camp this week. He stays for 4 hours and it's about 30 minutes from my home. It has been super weird for me to leave him so far away with people I don't really know at all, but he is loving it! So I totally relate to your mom anxieties leaving yours at play dates. They get so independent so quickly!

  4. These two outfits are great and very you. These type of looks are a FALL uniform for me, as a matter of fact. I can totally recreate the second one. I even have an identical bright yellow scarf, just like it.

  5. Love the pop of yellow in the last outfit. It always best to be over dresses then under dressed.

  7. Kinda unfair to stick you with summer fabrics in the winter. Now, make sure to make them do linen or such in the winter ;)

  8. I see no overdressing here, Mica - these are both awesome, colourful layered outfits, suitable for any occasion! Aren't you clever, layering up that gorgeous pink dress? And I LOVE the bold yellow with the blue jacket in the second outfit. Just stunning! I often grouch that linen doesn't come in enough bright colours - there's so much boring, beige linen out there. Have a great week, my dear friend!

    1. Yes I'm lucky to have these bright linen pieces, although the default of neutral linen might explain why I don't have a lot of it in my wardrobe!

  21. I love both outfits because they both incorporate a pop of color! The one paired with yellow scarf takes the cake though. Very beautiful look! I have not left my son on a play date by himself yet so I am bracing myself for when that happens. I am sure there will be a lot of nail biting and anxiety!
