Matching Necklaces and Kimonos With Tanks and Denim Shorts

Matching some statement beaded necklaces to the colours in some pretty printed kimonos with these summer shorts and tanks outfits. Balancing out the extra colour with my neutral Chloe Ethel bag too, and staying comfortable in my sneakers. Perfect outfits for some summer school holiday playdates.

Shorts: thrifted Jeanswest distressed denim shorts

Why I wore it:

This was a fun morning but a busy afternoon! We had a playdate with some of my son's school friends and while the boys were all busy playing I got caught up chatting with all the other parents - we ended up spending quite a bit of time at the park! It was home for a very quick lunch and then lots of errands in the afternoon. Had to drop off more donations from our pre-Christmas clear-out to the opshop too.

I like blue and purple together so thought that this turquoise tank would look nice with the lilac necklace and purple kimono - even if the shades of purple in the print are darker than the necklace. Worried that the turquoise tank might be a bit too bright and light for this but I'm glad I gave it a try as I really liked the colours in this outfit, I think it all worked together well. Was nice and comfortable for sitting around at the park too!

Last worn: purple chevron print kimono, lilac statement necklace, turquoise tank, distressed denim shorts, New Balance sneakers, Chloe Ethel bag.

Other ways to wearpurple chevron print kimono and jeans, turquoise tank and pencil skirt, distressed denim shorts and striped tank, Chloe Ethel bag and maxi skirt.

Why I wore it:

Another playdate! This was, like the outfit above, one I'd planned out and wasn't sure if it would work. After putting it on that morning I still wasn't sure it worked - the neutral silver tank with the light beige kimono maybe not the best combination, even with the red necklace for an extra pop of colour and to match the red in the print of the kimono. However I wasn't going to get changed again!

I'd managed to injure my back and was in a lot of pain that morning so I figured the outfit was good enough, ha! I decided to still go to the picnic playdate as planned, to let the kids enjoy the playground as I tried to socialise with the other mums. I did a lot of whining about my sore back though, ha! The movement and walking around did help loosen it up a bit as I hoped, as it was just a pulled muscle. Even made it out to the library that day although I did spend a bit of time in the afternoon letting the kids watch a movie while I laid down to rest my back some more!

I really liked the red necklace with this kimono, and the Ethel bag looks great with it too. I've worn the kimono and bag together before too and enjoyed the combo then too. I just think a different coloured tank might have been better here.

How You Can Wear It:

A fun printed kimono is a great way to add more colour and interest to a plain tank and shorts outfit for summer. You can match the colours in the kimono to something else in your outfit too like I have here with the necklaces as an easy way to coordinate your outfit.

  5. I'm loving both of your outfits, Mica, and indeed I don't think the turquoise tank with the first one isn't too bright. I also think the second outfit is great, if you weren't too sure about it. The matching pops of red in your kimono and your necklace really pulls it together.
I'm glad to hear the boys had some lovely play dates and that you were able to catch up with the other Mums. Ouch about your back, though, I hope it didn't bother you for too long! xxx

Thankfully my back healed up quickly!

  13. What a great formula: kimono + matching necklace, neutral tank and shorts. Fabulous!

I really like the first outfit, but the bag's colour is not quite right for me - it's too warm, when the rest of the colours are cool in blues. I think a pink or blue bag would go better.

The bag works so well in the second outfit, however, and I disagree with you on the tank - it picks out the light colour in the kimono's print really well. And honestly, when you're wearing these fabulous kimonos, the eye should just skim over the rest as the kimonos are the star! I think tan or beige would just wash the whole outfit out.

I'm glad you've been able to get out for some playdates, but so sorry to hear about your pulled muscle in your back (did you fall, like me?). I hope that feels better soon! I swear by Voltarin, a topical skin rub that has anti-inflammatory properties - I use it for sore muscles and for my arthritis in my hands.

I hope you have a wonderful week, my dear friend! Take care!

    1. I do have a pink bag that would look so cute with that first kimono but I haven't tried it yet! thanks for reminding me I need to! :)

I didn't fall thankfully so my back was quick to heal up! I used a lot of a similar rub to help make it easier to move around until the muscles healed up and I know an amazing acupuncture guy who fixed it up!

  17. I really like both of these outfits, Mica! Matching your necklaces to the kimono was brilliant. And the silvery top really does read as neutral in this outfit. So I think it works.
