Cold Weather Layering: Dresses, Printed Scarves and Trench Coats

Living out of a suitcase for 3 weeks and having a capsule wardrobe means repeating outfit formulas often. A dress, ankle boots and then some cosy layers was a frequent go-to in Scotland.

What I wore:

Edinburgh Zoo in May outfit camel trench purple scarf skater dress ankle boots | awayfromblue

Jacket: Barkins beige trench coat
Jacket: Kmart striped maxi cardigan
ScarfMarc by Marc Jacobs mauve square scarf
DressAsos grey skater dress
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

Wore this to visit Edinburgh Zoo with the kids. I expected it to be a little chilly as it's on a hill, but even with all the layers (dress, duster, scarf, trench, fleece lined tights) it was still a really cold day. Pushing the stroller up all of the hills helped keep me warm! 😂 It's not the easiest zoo to take a stroller too!

I was glad I had my Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere bag as it's waterproof at it did sprinkle with rain a few times.

Scarf: Mickey Mouse printed scarf from Disneyland Paris (new purchase)

Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots

Why I wore it:

Wore this for an emotional day, our last full day in Edinburgh as we prepared to say goodbye. It was a cold and wet day so we cancelled our plans to go to the museum and had a long relaxing brunch before browsing a couple of stores for last minute treats to bring home and then starting to pack before our final dinner. We ate at the Melville Inn and the meals were so good! Highly recommend!

I wasn't sure about the Ikat print of the dress with the Mickey Mouse print on the scarf, although the colours are similar the prints are quite different, but I just wanted to wear my new scarf so wore it anyway! With my big trench coat it kept me cosy as we hopped in and out of the car.

Camel Trench Coats Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

A trench coat is a great piece for autumn and winter. The one I'm wearing is perfect on even colder days as it's fully lined and oh-so-cosy, but you can invest in a lighter one if you want to wear it on warmer days. A classic camel trench will go with any combination of colours or prints!

  1. I love a trench coat. I had a beige one but it was a bit huge on me (London Fog - I got it large so I could wear sweaters under it but it really wasn't very cute on....functional though) and I just haven't replaced it. I'd really like one of the lightweight ones since I have a few warm, cozy coats already. I like the way you've styled yours. I do think the Mickey scarf goes fine with the Ikat print since you have the trench acting as kind of a separator. I'm not sure about it without the trench, though....I couldn't really tell. I love your "what's in my bag" video - LOL! The water bottle! No wonder you don't have a problem changing out purses so often - you have everything nicely compartmentalized in pouches and I think that's the only way to do it. I really need to organize mine. At any rate, I loved both of your looks and you look gorgeous (that purple scarf is a wonderful color on you)!

    1. I hope you can replace your trench soon - this is such a staple for me! :) And yes, I have to keep things organised in my bags so I can swap them out more often! :)

  2. You are a layering pro! I can struggle with it as I'm quite petite - all too easy to end up looking swamped! x

  4. I see your capsule wardrobe for Europe worked absolutely well and I love both looks! Nevertheless I can understand that it was cold despite the layers as I know the temperatures in Europe :)

I think your outfits are lovely. The last day of a trip is always hard, but it's great that you had a good time.

  15. I love wearing my trench coat for autumn and spring - I really wouldn't reach for it in winter, as mine is more of a lightweight material and definitely not warm enough for cold days.

  20. That is such a nice trench coat! I'd love to get a classic trench because it is so timeless, but I want to save for a designer version because I know it will have years of wear! It's one of my wish list items and has been for years! I love the style of yours!
