Colourful Winter Office Wear: Blue and Yellow Pencil Skirt Outfits

Sharing some colourful but still very cosy winter outfits, with my favourite blue pencil skirts and a big Rebecca Minkoff MAB tote bag. When our winter temperatures dipped again, I wanted warm knits, and picked some of my bright ones to inject a little colour.

Plus, an update on how I did with my No Buy July challenge, #noBuyJuly18!

Jumper: thrifted SES fashions mustard marle knit jumper
SkirtWarehouse navy jacquard pencil skirt
Shoes: RMK Chester black ankle boots
BagRebecca Minkoff medium MAB tote in moon navy

Why I wore it:

Trying blue and yellow with a mustard marle knit, blue scarf and blue pencil skirt. Decided to wear the Rebecca Minkoff medium MAB tote as I love wearing blue bags with this pencil skirt, it's a frequent go-to combination.

While I do normally like blue and yellow together, I wasn't sure if this skirt and knit would look as good as I hoped together. I ended up really liking this outfit, I think the scarf really made it perfect for me. This was such a comfortable outfit too, very much appreciated for a crazy day at work where nothing went according to plan at all!

Why I wore it:

Again continuing the blue and yellow theme! I really do like the colours together.  I felt like all of the blue together wasn't quite colourful enough, so I added this cosy and bright yellow scarf. This knit and pencil skirt is a combination I've worn before in the warmer weather, it was good to be able to layer it up for winter.

Unlike the previous week at work, I had to wear my trench coat when I ventured out for coffee with my boss in the morning and lunch in the afternoon. It was a much cooler winter day. While the bright yellow scarf is a fun summery shade, the big size makes it very warm and very cosy to wrap myself up in during winter! I like blue and yellow together so it seemed like a fun choice for a cold morning to repeat the colour combo again.

Usually when it's cold I'll add ankle boots to my outfit, but I felt ballet flats were better for all the running around I had to do in the morning. It was one of those days where you come into work with an idea of what task you're going to do, then the afternoon rolls around and you realise you've been pulled in so many directions you hadn't started your task!

No Buy July Results!

It might not come as a surprise, after I mastered 7 months without shopping last year, but I made it through #noBuyJuly18 sticking to my goal and not spending anything on fashion. July is such a busy time with all of the sales, but I'm pretty content with my winter wardrobe now (even after halving my winter pieces from two storage boxes to one), and that makes it easier to avoid the sales. Some of the sales were extremely tempting, but even with the $5 sale at Jeanswest (!) I didn't buy anything. For full disclosure, I did add a few things to carts but decided not to buy at the last minute.

I shared more tips for how to survive a no shop challenge after completing 6 months without shopping: lessons from a former shopaholic.

Bright Knits Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

Winter wear works well in neutral colours, as you can layer without worrying about colours matching. It's a fun idea to add some colourful pieces though, from bright scarves to colourful and cosy knits, you can still be cosy and warm! Sticking with colour combinations you know you love, or adding a contrasting scarf to a monochrome outfit, is a good way to try it out.

Navy Tops, Grey Pencil Skirts and Purple Scarves With Trench Coats and Rebecca Minkoff Regan

Pencil skirts are a work staple for me, year-round! It's easy to layer them up a little for the colder weather. My trench coat tends to be a winter only piece, and add some tights and a cosy scarf and a pencil skirt works well for even a cold winter morning commute.

Has to be said though, the days I wore these outfits the weather wasn't that cold. I managed to go out for lunch and leave the heavy coats behind at my desk, as it warmed up nicely by lunch time.

What I wore:

Why I wore it:

I really like wearing this navy blouse with grey, I've done it before here so I thought I'd repeat it again with a grey pencil skirt. I liked the combination. This fun purple leopard print scarf hadn't been worn yet this winter so it seemed like a great choice to add to my outfit to keep me cosy on my cold commute into the office. I really like purple and blue together.

With the navy blouse, a navy bag seemed like a perfect pairing. Again, this is a combination I've tried before, I like the matchy-matchy-ness of it.

As I'd forgotten to get my lunch out of the fridge in the morning before I left the house, I popped out at lunch time to pick up something. It was warm enough that I was able to leave my trench coat behind, although I did keep my scarf on.

Why I wore it:

Following the same outfit formula with a blue top, grey pencil skirt and purple(ish) scarf.

It was a bit of a different day at work as I was in a workshop all day - thought this jersey skirt in a more casual fabric would work well. I really liked the printed shirt with it, although they were different fabrics I felt the shirt dressed up the skirt a little.

Despite the busy print on the shirt, I added another printed scarf, this time my purpleish Alexander McQueen Skull scarf. I ended up not needing the scarf for most of the day, and when we broke for lunch I left my scarf and coat behind to go outside and catch up with hubby. He was in the city over lunch again, visiting another office. Just like last time, it was good to catch up without kids.

I decided to keep wearing the Rebecca Minkoff Regan bag - I thought it went nicely with both the top and navy macintosh in this outfit.

Grey Pencil Skirts Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

Navy and grey is a great neutral combination, perfect for work. A longer sleeved top, with or without a print, and a classic grey pencil skirt makes for an easy winter office outfit. You can add more colour and a little extra warmth with a purple scarf. Purple and navy are lovely together.

Two Ways To Wear: Coca-Cola Stripe Logo Tee

Most of my opshop purchases are impulse buys, like this tee! It's rare for me to have enough luck to go thrifting for something specific and find it. I was so thrilled to come across this striped Coca Cola logo tee though, for just $1 (the whole rack was 8 pieces for $4, but there is limited browsing time when your child suddenly announces he needs to pee!). Since logo tees are perfectly on trend, I knew it would be an easy piece to add to my wardrobe. Here's two different ways I've worn it. Both involving a little print mixing!

What I wore:

print mixing red maxi skirt outfit with stripe coca cola logo tee ankle boots denim jacket | awayfromblue

red boho print maxi skirt, Rebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey | awayfromtheblue

Tee: thrifted navy stripe Coca-Cola logo tee
Skirt:  thrifted Billabong red printed maxi skirt
Shoes: Asos leather Chelsea boots in tan
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey with Rebecca Minkoff Crystal Star Shoulder Guitar strap

Why I wore it:

A not so chilly winter morning meant I could take my opportunity to wear my denim jacket. It's going to sit unworn in my wardrobe for a couple months until winter is over now! It wasn't too cold to wear in the morning but was a little cooler in the evening. The Chelsea leather ankle boots helped keep me cosy too.

I did the day car drop off and pick up and worked from home. This outfit was perfect for that, I do really like this red maxi skirt with the denim jacket, and I wanted to wear that combination again (I last wore the denim jacket and red maxi skirt here). I thought the striped tee was a good print mix with the print on the skirt, and the red logo tied in perfectly. I really loved this outfit!

Was all so easy to put together, and so comfortable.

BagRebecca Minkoff unlined saddle bag in cherry red (on sale in blue!)

Why I wore it:

Another little touch of print mixing with this tee. Unlike the outfit above, I did wish this outfit was a little warmer when I sat outside in the playground with the boys. It was so funny as the kids were running around playing happily and us mums were shivering and trying to find the warmest (sunny and not as windy) spots to watch the kids playing!

Aside from wishing I'd worn something a bit warmer than a blazer, I did like this outfit. I wanted to pick out the navy stripes from this tee for a bit of matchy-matchy. This bird print scarf was so perfect. I loved the colour combo and the print mixing was nice too. I've worn this scarf with stripes before and enjoyed it then too.

I did add just a little touch of red with the bag - the red logo is fun as a pop of red on it's own, and I'll need to try that next time I wear it, but if you've read my blog a while you will know I can't resist a little matchy matchy-ness!

Last worn: cream blazer, logo tee (above), navy bird print scarf, Prima skinny jeans, tan boots, Rebecca Minkoff saddle bag.

Coca Cola Tees Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:
Stripes are such an easy print to try print mixing with. If you're not a fan of print mixing though, you can still take some inspiration from the outfits above. Pick out a colour from your logo or striped tee and wear coordinating pieces like the red skirt in the first outfit, or coordinating accessories like the red dress and navy scarf in the second outfit.

Embroidered Tops In the Office With Balenciaga Bags

After a rough week of feeling unwell and working from home, I felt well enough to return to the office. I decided to wear some of my embroidered pieces to boost my mood. I love embroidery, but it's been a while since I wore these tops so it was definitely overdue.

What I wore:

ScarfLouis Vuitton monogram shawl in bleu
BlouseJeanswest Elise longline embroidered shirt in coconut blue
PantsJeanswest 'Fiona' skinny leg pant in shiraz
Shoes: Asos leather Chelsea boots in tan
BagBalenciaga part time in black 2010 with SGH

Why I wore it:

Unfortunately, despite having regained most of my voice the day before, constantly greeting people in the office and explaining that I had almost lost my voice resulted in me pretty much losing my voice  again before lunch time! While meetings were difficult, they weren't impossible. I felt able to follow along mentally even if I couldn't contribute much to the discussions. There was a lot of pointing and gesturing at screens. Thank goodness for being able to use messaging apps to communicate with my colleagues in other offices rather than picking up the phone!

Lack of voice aside, I wanted to bundle up warmly as it was predicted to be one of the coldest winter days, with single digit temperatures. I'm from Brisbane, 8 degrees Celsius is freezing to us! I picked my cosiest scarf, this Louis Vuitton monogram shawl. The night before as I'd planned my outfits I'd tied it so it was more like a snood / infinity scarf. As I shared on Instagram though, it wasn't as easy to replicate on a cold and dark morning. I didn't realise it looked quite so messy until I saw the pics. Oh well, it definitely kept me warm.

Probably could have picked a warmer jacket over this blazer, and maybe not rolled my pants up to expose my ankles on such a cold day. I did love this outfit otherwise though, it was perfect for the day at work, just not so much for a nearly freezing commute!

BagBalenciaga truffle brown RH classic day bag

Why I wore it:

Thought I'd wear this embroidered peasant tank to the office, as I was surprised to realise I'd never done that yet. I love this and wore it a lot while breastfeeding. It's a long flowy tunic length, perfect for lifting up slightly to feed baby but keeping your stomach covered still. It worked well in the office too! I can't believe this is the first time I've worn this top this year, it's a favourite and has been neglected too long.

While I didn't wear the trench coat in the office and swapped to a cardigan, I did enjoy all the brown tones in this outfit when I wore the trench. The scarf looks a bit crumpled from being in storage and I briefly considered ironing it, but just wore it anyway. Creases happen!

Just like the day above, my voice was better in the morning and almost non existent by the end of the day. While the day started off great with a cup of free chocolates and then lunch being provided at the office, my voice and I were exhausted by mid afternoon. I had a late meeting right before I left and my colleague was sliding me throat lozenges across the desk when she heard me trying to speak on the call! 😂

Accessorising Bags & Winter Office Wear With Printed Skirts

Embracing winter weather and getting my fleecy tights and my knits out for some colourful office outfits. I'm glad I have a business casual dress code at work that lets me be a little more creative with what I wear.

Both these outfits follow the same outfit formula, and despite the different colour schemes in each, I kept the same fun accessory on my bag. The silk 'scarf' tied in a bow on the Regan handle is actually a belt from the skirt in the first photo.

What I wore:

NecklaceStarfish Project Hannah turquoise bead necklace
Top: Valleygirl blue knit jumper
SkirtFrench Connection silk leaf print skirt
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs black logo plaque ballet flats
BagRebecca Minkoff Regan Satchel Tote in moon

Why I wore it:

This skirt is silk, so it's quite light, but with a pair of fleece lined tights it was perfect for a cold morning. I wasn't sure what to do with the silk belt that comes with this skirt at first, then I realised I could just use it to accessorise my bag! (Video showing more ways you can accessorise your bags below.)

After trying it in pregnancy, I've been embracing green and blue together a lot more so I thought that this cobalt marle knit would work nicely with the green and yellow in this skirt. I wasn't too sure about the combo after first trying it on, but grabbing this green beaded necklace really tied it together for me and I loved this outfit combo. It did feel a bit matchy matchy, blue knit, coat and bag, with green skirt, bow on bag and necklace, but I do like a little matchy matchy!

Last worn: navy macintosh, blue marle knit, silk skirt, Marc Jacobs ballet flats, Rebecca Minkoff Regan bag.

Other ways to wearnavy macintosh and wrap dress, blue marle knit with magenta bag, silk skirt and teal henley, Marc Jacobs ballet flats and printed shorts, Rebecca Minkoff Regan bag and navy top.

Top: thrifted SES fashions mustard marle knit jumper (recent purchase)
Skirt: Garfunkle Australia pleated print skirt
ShoesWalnut Melbourne 'Ava' black lizard ballet flats (also available in silver)
BagRebecca Minkoff Regan Satchel Tote in moon

Why I wore it:

As I usually do, copying the outfit formula I enjoyed so much from the first outfit to create this second one. I kept things a little more monochromatic this time around, with all of the yellow. I debated changing out the silk bow on the Regan bag but I think the yellow in the leaf print worked nicely with the yellow in this skirt.

Just like the outfit above, this marle knit is a thrift find too, only $1! It's actually a really orange-y thread with a few flecks of gold metallic, but with the marle it looks mustard - and if you've read my blog before you'll probably know I've been loving everything mustard. I smiled when I saw this, as I had just been admiring an email from Jeanswest with their new yellow heavy knit collection before I stopped by the opshop. Perfect thing to find! The sleeves are a bit long for my petite self, but at the moment I'm just rolling them up before I can get to the tailor.

The necklace is another new piece - $3 in the Kmart sale! I like statement necklaces like this, and I felt the green and blue went with the yellow in my outfit nicely.

Last worn: trench coat, pleated a-line skirt, Walnut Melbourne flats, Rebecca Minkoff Regan satchel (above). First time I've worn the mustard knit as it's a recent opshop find.

Marle Knits Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

While thin open knits like these jumpers might be a spring or autumn staple in other parts of the world, they are perfect for Brisbane winters. A cosy knit isn't just a weekend option, you can easily dress them up a little for a business casual office with a pretty skirt. A statement necklace makes the look a little more formal as well, or you could always add heels, a blazer, and swap to a pencil skirt to dress it up even more.

Colourful Cardigan and Maxi Skirt Outfits

I like to wear most of my clothing year round. While my winter knits do get boxed up for summer (definitely not needed when it's 35 degrees C and 90% humidity!), my summer pieces stay in my wardrobe all year. It means I can pick 'summery pieces' like these maxi skirts and layer them up a little for cooler weather. A cosy cardi is a nice layer to add to a summer skirt.

What I wore:

BagRebecca Minkoff mini MAC in aquamarine with python embossed leather

Why I wore it:

So excited to get this mustard cardi out again! After I did 6 months without shopping last year I was thrilled to find this in my local opshop for $2 - and it's sure to get even more wear this year than it did last year. It was perfect to keep me cosy for a busy Saturday - we had a morning flying our kite at the park, then watching the church online service at a friend's house.

Mustard yellow and aquamarine with the blue chambray skirt makes for a colourful outfit. The black striped tank seemed like the perfect neutral to wear with it. The mustard yellow and aqua combo is one I've worn before here.

Normally, I'd wear a top tucked into the top of the maxi skirt, to make the top hit at a more flattering spot on my petite self. This time around though, with the long line of the cardigan and maxi skirt, I actually preferred the top untucked! I've been trying to think differently about my outfits lately. Even if it's just something as simple as wearing a top I'd always tuck in untucked, it's nice to try different things.

Last worn: mustard cardigan, black striped tank, chambray maxi skirt, Converse, Rebecca Minkoff aquamarine mini MAC bag.

Other ways to wearmustard cardigan and little black dress, black striped tank and printed kimono, chambray maxi skirt and foil print tee, Converse and bermuda denim shorts, Rebecca Minkoff aquamarine mini MAC bag and boho dress.

Why I wore it:

While I loved the outfit formula above, I didn't like it so much this time I tried it. It's the same basic pieces, though, a striped tank, maxi skirt and colourful cardigan. While I like all of the pieces separately, I just felt they didn't look as good together as the outfit at the top. I felt it was good enough in my rush to leave the house and get to playgroup on time with the boys though!

I also forgot just how breezy this skirt is to wear, with a split on both dies up to my knee. It made staying cosy outside in the playground a little trickier. Even with the ankle boots,it wasn't enough when the wind picked up.

I don't think it's a complete outfit fail, but I think a different maxi skirt or a simpler cardigan would have improved this outfit. One of those ones where you throw things on in the morning after waking up with a vague idea of what to wear, and the resulting outfit shows that you've thrown it on 😂
