Peplum Tanks, Kimonos and Denim Shorts: Summer Mum Style

I've been wearing peplum tanks with pencil skirts frequently recently, so I thought it was time to try something different and pair them with some denim shorts. Like scarves in winter, kimonos are a fun topper to an outfit to add a little extra colour and interest.

Why I wore it:

After getting badly sunburned a couple days before, I needed a light outfit that provided sun protection for a quick trip out with the boys to run essential errands and pickup some groceries. This black peplum tank is so soft and just what my sore shoulders needed. It's a shame that the peplum hem of this tank doesn't show up well in the photos as I thought it looked really cute! I was grateful for the kimono adding a little extra colour and print to the outfit as it also offered some good sun protection for my tender shoulders.

I've recently worn this purple Rebecca Minkoff mini MAB tote bag with the blue printed kimono before - since I liked the combination I thought I'd wear it again, just swapping the white tee for this black tank and a different necklace. I also appreciated the thin cross body strap on the bag being easy to wear without aggravating my sunburned neck and shoulders!

Simple, fuss-free outfit for a hot day.

Why I wore it:

Despite not having sunburn to contend with when I wore this, it's a very similar outfit to the one above. Longer shorts and longer tank, but still just denim shorts, peplum tank and a fun blue printed kimono with a colourful pink Rebecca Minkoff bag this time.

I picked up this peplum tank in the Kmart clearance sale and wanted to wear it another way to meet my 'wear twice in the month I buy it' goal for all my new purchases. Since I wore it with a pencil skirt last time, I wore it more casually this time with the bermuda denim shorts. The pink beaded necklace and mini MAC bag were fun accessories to pop against the blue printed kimono too.

Had quite a busy day. A relaxed morning browsing the opshop after dropping off another couple of bags of donations, and of course picking up a couple of things for myself too! Then had an appointment for the boys in the afternoon. With the heat and humidity, I liked this light kimono addition to my outfit as it kept me sun-safe and didn't add to the heat.

How You Can Wear It:

A peplum tank is a nice twist on a basic tank - just as easy to wear, but with a little ruffled hem to add a point of difference to your outfit. If the outfit still seems a little plain, why not add a kimono for colour and interest in summer, or a scarf in cooler weather. A brightly coloured bag is another fun accessory that works year-round!

Printed Tees and Denim Shorts With Rebecca Minkoff MAB Camera Bag

With the summer heatwave back in January, shorts and a tee were all I could face wearing! Of course I tried to make the outfits a little different by wearing printed tees and adding some accessories: long tassel necklaces and a neutral Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag.

What I wore:

Why I wore it:

I was excited to get in my first wear of this new tee that I thrifted recently for just $1! I've been hunting for a good opshop after my local go-to closed down, and while this one is further away, $1 per item of clothing is my kind of opshop. This was a Kmart tee, fairly recent I think, maybe last spring, so it wouldn't have cost much more new.

Ordinarily I'd worry that shorts and a tee were too casual for a specialist appointment (especially with this doctor, she is impeccably stylish!) but it was too hot to contemplate anything other than shorts and a tee. With the black blobs in the print I thought the black denim shorts were the obvious choice, with the tan Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag and gold sandals to accessorise with. As I had the gold hardware on the bag and gold shoes and the pink on the tee, this pink tassel necklace that has a few gold beads spaced through the chain was the ideal finishing touch.

Was comfortable and cool in this all day - from the playground with the boys in the morning, the appointment, and then lunch and working with my mum on something in the afternoon.

Why I wore it:

This day was a quieter day but again I stuck to the same outfit formula. They are the best. When you're not sure what to wear, think back to something you liked to wear and repeat it, changing a couple of things if you want the outfit to feel 'new'. I wanted something easy because as you can tell from my hair the heat and humidity was bad on this day!

I picked a striped tee to wear this time, and as it had navy stripes decided on the blue denim distressed shorts to wear. I really liked the MAB camera bag and rose gold sandals together in the first outfit, so I repeated that outfit combo again, but I picked a turquoise tassel necklace to accessorise with this time instead of the pink one.

For another point of difference, I added the Fashion Scarf Girl hair scarf on my wrist. I thought with the stripes on the top it might have been a little too much to wear in my hair, but it worked perfectly on my wrist. I've worn it on my wrist before.

Simple shorts and striped tee summer outfit, for a morning out with the boys. A couple of errands, a trip to the library and playground and grabbing some groceries on the way home.

Shorts and a tee is a summer staple - wherever you are in the world! A great fall-back outfit for a summer heatwave, it's easy to change things up slightly by wearing a fun printed tee instead of a plain one. If you're adding colour and print to your outfit with your top, you can stick with neutral accessories to compliment whatever print or colours you are wearing. Metallic sandals go with everything, and so does a neutral bag.

Shorts, Tees and Printed Kimonos With Purple Mini MAB Tote Bag

Two outfits following the same outfit formula but with different colour schemes! The first outfit is pink and purple and the second is purple again, but with blue instead. These simple shorts, tee and kimono outfits are a summer staple for me and perfect for mum life.

Why I wore it:

I really liked this outfit. I like grey and pink together but this outfit felt it was lacking something until I added the kimono - the perfect touch! With the purple floral kimono, a purple mini MAB tote bag was the obvious choice to accessorise with.

It was a busy day! We went to a local opshop I'd heard good things about but never visited. It's a little out of the way, but with clothes just $1 each was definitely worth checking out! As usual, I left with more things for the boys than me, but it was still a good trip and we will have to try go more regularly. I still haven't found the perfect alternative to my favourite opshop after it closed.

Of course after spending time doing something for me in the morning, we had to go do something for the boys later. We visited a travelling petting zoo at a shopping centre, and it was so much fun. We all had a great time. I did regret my shoe choice as these studded Balenciaga sandals are maybe a little too delicate for straw and animals everywhere, and when I got a cup of animal feed spilled over me and into the cuffs of my shorts I regretted them a little too! But it was so much fun overall I didn't dwell on it for long!

Why I wore it:

This day was not as exciting as the one above! Took the boys out to the library, the playground and then picked up some groceries on the way home. I really liked the outfit formula above though, so much that I repeated it again here, just changing the colour scheme a little. Blue and purple is another of those combinations that I love, so I kept the purple Rebecca Minkoff mini MAB tote bag and switched the purple kimono out for this pretty blue one and the grey tee for a white one. Blue denim shorts and just simple Havaianas made this a great outfit that follows the outfit formula above but created its own unique outfit I loved just as much.

It's taken me a few years to face my fears and buy a white tee, but I'm glad I did, I really like this one from Atmos&Here and it works so nicely with blue!

Frill Sleeve Tees, Printed Shorts and Rebecca Minkoff MAB Camera Bag

Wearing some of the wonderful pieces I got for Christmas, but as always sticking with the simple outfit formulas I love. Some frill sleeve statement tees, printed shorts and my new Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag that I got for Christmas.

Why I wore it:

As well as the new tee and bag, these shorts were a new purchase. I tried to resist the January sales, but the Kmart clearance was too tempting and I scored these $15 shorts for $5. Since my other pair of blue printed shorts reached 30 wears, I knew these would become a firm favourite in my wardrobe. The print I thought was wattle but the tag says lemon. I decided to pair this bright pink tee with them due to the pastel pink in the print. With all of the colour and the printed colourful headband as well I added the neutral gold sandals and almond Rebecca Minkoff camera bag to balance it all out.

I wasn't too sure if the headband was too much with this outfit, given the bright colours, statement sleeves and tie on the shorts, but I think it worked nicely together in the end, and helped disguise a bad hair day a little bit!

The shorts were perfect for a first wear, and a practical choice for running around with the boys at a playground in the morning.

Why I wore it:

Since I liked the first outfit so much, I repeated the same outfit formula again later for a busy day. Park with the boys in the morning, seeing hubby off to the airport on a work trip, then dinner and watching Church Online at my friend's house in the evening. It was a hot and humid day, so shorts and a tee seemed like a good option. We didn't stay at the park for too long before heading back to the aircon!

First time I wore this navy statement sleeve tee I paired it with the pastel pink tassel necklace. I really liked the combination, so wanted to try it again. The tassel also worked nicely with the tassel tie on the printed shorts.

Navy and black is a combination I've worn together a few times before - I used to be unsure of it until I bought a dress years ago (before the blog) that featured both colours, and figured if it was good enough for the dress is was good enough for me to try with separates! The neutrals work nicely together. Added in another neutral accessory to the combination with the almond Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag.

Some casual weekday style for this week's Weekday Wear Linkup!

I extended my Christmas holidays from work into January. It gave me a lot more time at home with the boys, and we took advantage of the opportunity to try a different park to play at each day. I kept things simple for playground style: plain tees, denim shorts and fun kimonos for a little bit of sun coverage.

Why I wore it:

Say hello to my new favourite kimono! This kimono was a Christmas gift from my mum, and one of those clothing pieces where you just pull it on and feel so happy with the outfit! Expect to see this popping up a lot more often on my blog. The pink beaded necklace added a little more colour to my outfit - it too was a Christmas gift from my mum. With the pink necklace, I added the pastel pink Rebecca Minkoff Darren bag as well as the studded Balenciaga sandals. I like pink and purple together and though none of these shades of pink matched I thought that they all worked nicely together and with the floral kimono.

I really enjoyed this outfit - nice and simple for a day at the park.

Why I wore it:

After a few days in a row of spending time around all the local parks, I felt a needed a little more coverage from the sun so picked out another new floral kimono - this one also a Christmas gift from my mum. With the plain white tee and the black denim shorts it was a nice pop of colour. And with the blue in the floral print, I thought this necklace (also a new Christmas gift) was a nice finishing touch. I kept with the Rebecca Minkoff small Darren bag as it compliments the colours in the flowers nicely.

We went to a new-to-me park that the boys have been to before, it has a big racing track for bikes and scooters which they had a wonderful time running around. I was glad I had the kimono for physical sunblock for my arms as there wasn't a lot of shade around.

Just like the first outfit, I stuck with gold shoes even though the bag has silver hardware - I figured that the metals were far enough apart from each other that they worked.

These floral kimonos are lightweight so an ideal way to add an extra layer of interest and colour to your outfit without overheating you in the middle of summer! Soft Shorts, Tees And Colourful Rebecca Minkoff Micro Regan and Mini MAC Bags

You know I love my bright handbags, and I have quite a few colourful Rebecca Minkoff bags. Making the most of the lovely summer weather here in Brisbane at the start of January, I headed to some different parks with the boys, and accessorised the plain shorts and tee outfits with some fun bags.

What I wore:

Necklace: gifted Kmart pink multi-colour beaded necklace
Tee: Jeanswest black scoop neck tee
Shorts: Jeanswest Parker printed shirred short
Shoes: black slim Havaianas thongs
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff neon pink mini MAC

Why I wore it:

This is one of those outfits that looks nice in the photos but really wasn't good to wear. I'd planned it the night before, while in the aircon, and decided that this plain black tee would look so good with the printed black shorts. They do look nice together, and the pink accessories were such a fun touch with all of the black - the hot pink mini MAC bag really pops against the neutral outfit.

However monochrome black was not such a good choice for a hot summer day on one of the local walking trails! Especially as I forgot my water bottle.

If I'd been inside for more of the day, or wore this on a cooler day or on a shadier trail, I would have liked it more than I did.

Why I wore it:

This  outfit was much better suited for a day out in the sun! The tee is another new-to-me one from my sister's wardrobe. It's not the first time I've won these olive embroidered shorts with stripes, I really like the combo so when I got this navy stripe tee I knew I wanted to try it with the shorts right away.

The mustard micro Regan bag is another frequently worn option with the olive shorts too, I really like mustard and olive together.

Even with the mustard bag and olive shorts, I added another colour with the necklace and bracelets - I picked some of my new rose gold accessories. I have this Kmart necklace in navy and gold and I am thrilled to have the pink and gold version now too! I thought it matched matched my pink, rose gold and pearl bracelet stack well, especially with the addition of the rose gold sandals. The shiny accessories were a bit more dressed up than a playdate at the park called for, but it was a cute touch of sparkle for the final day of the year.
