Printed Shorts with Neutral and Bright Fitted Tanks

Before starting my #6MonthsWithoutShopping challenge and trying to hit 30 wears on more of my wardrobe, I'd been admiring a pair of printed shorts at Jeanswest. It was a good motivation for me to get the printed shorts I already have and wear them more often. This post brings them to 14 wears, even though the lightweight fabric and relaxed cut make them perfect for a hot day.

The outfit formulas followed below are incredibly similar, but I think they look different just by changing from a neutral to a colourful top. Anything to justify the huge box of fitted tanks I have in multiple colours! 😉

What I wore:

simple basic grey tank with printed shorts outfit SAHM style hot day studded sandals | Away From Blue

printed shorts, Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC in aquamarine with python embossed leather | Away From The Blue

Necklace: Ruby Olive Softies Ava elephant pendant teething necklace

ShortsJeanswest 'Scarlette' printed shorts
ShoesRebecca Minkoff Georgina studded gladiator sandals in blush (on sale, 44% off!)
BagRebecca Minkoff mini MAC in aquamarine with python embossed leather (on sale!)

Why I wore it:

I really liked my outfit last time I wore this teething necklace and Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC bag together, so it was good wearing the combination again. They go quite well together!

Grey and blue is another one of my usual combinations. It's been such a long time since I wore this Target tank, a shame as it's a really good basic. A nice neutral tank went well with the busy printed shorts.

Ran a few errands in the morning and had a haircut too. You might have notice my hair doesn't look any different! I've decided to grow it out and donate it, so just had a trim. I usually grow my hair long and then change my mind and cut it short again, so this way it will benefit a sick child. Completely inspired by my friend who grew her hair for two years in order to donate it.

Why I wore it:

I liked the neutral tank and printed shorts combo above but wanted to try something a little more colourful the next time I wore these shorts. I like blue and yellow together so this tank seemed like a good choice. I mentioned on Instagram that this isn't a 'flattering' look.

When doing my wardrobe detox with a personal stylist two years ago, soon after buying these shorts, she pointed out that they didn't hit at the slimmest part on my waist (none of my tummy region is slim after having my beautiful babies!). It's easy to disguise by wearing the shorts with similar colours. But some days, you just want to wear a cheerful bright yellow tank and enjoy the colour combination more than the way the outfit flatters your post-baby body. I'm grateful for the advice of the stylist (she was so knowledgable and helpful!) but I'm also going to wear what makes me happy even if it doesn't look the best.

While this outfit does seem to highlight my rounded 'mum-tum', these shorts and blue and yellow together make me happy. Even if it did feel a little overly bright for a quiet day with not much else on other than a trip to the post office, I enjoyed wearing this.

You don't have to pair colourful printed shorts with a neutral top, you can wear a complimentary colour for an extra touch of brightness to your outfit. Neutral shoes are a good addition to a bright outfit like this.

Black Tanks, Printed Pieces and Rebecca Minkoff Mustard Yellow Micro Regan Bag

Doing #6MonthsWithoutShopping has given me a good reason to go through and wear more of my wardrobe. I have a big box of tanks I don't always wear so it's been fun going through it and wearing some of them again. As well as rediscovering some old ones I thought I no longer had, it's giving me the chance to wear more of my printed pieces. A black tank and a pretty print makes an easy outfit.

What I wore:

black tank, gladiator sandals, mustard printed skirt, Rebecca Minkoff harvest gold micro Regan | AwayFromBlue

pleated mustard print skirt, Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold | AwayFromTheBlue
Necklace: Ruby Olive Softies Charlotte teething necklace
Tank: Cotton On basics black tank
Skirt: Garfunkle Australia pleated print skirt
ShoesRebecca Minkoff Georgina studded gladiator sandals in blush (on sale!)
BagRebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold (on sale!)

Why I wore it:

Wore this to playgroup. For some reason I feel happy wearing dresses and maxi skirts to playgroup but I worried this might be a little overdressed. I'm making an effort to wear this skirt more often though, it's too pretty to be 'saved' for a perfect occasion and it's nice and light for summer. It dried out pretty quickly after getting soaked during water play at playgroup.

While I liked the way this looked, the only thing I didn't like about this outfit was how the tank felt to wear. This is one of those really old pieces in my wardrobe. I remember buying this when I was at uni, and for some reason it's been kept all those years. I don't actually think I've worn it at all in the 5 years I've had this blog! I couldn't find it in my archives.

It felt different to wear, and I didn't enjoy wearing it. I'm conscious that when I'm breastfeeding some tops will just fit differently, so I haven't gotten rid of this top at the moment...but if I don't enjoy it next time I wear it it won't be hanging around in my wardrobe for long.

Why I wore it:

Unlike the outfit above, I loved the way this looked and felt to wear. I've even worn these blue shorts with yellow again since. I was really happy in this all day. Which was a good thing as our quiet day turned into quite a busy one! Had baby boy's weekly weigh in the morning, and my mum was coming over in the afternoon. After dropping Cooper off at the groomers, a ute nearly drove into the front of our car. I was a little shaken as I'm not a very confident driver normally, but luckily no-one was hurt. I had to get my mum to come pick up Cooper with me though as I wasn't comfortable doing it myself after that!

When we got home I was anticipating a quiet afternoon, until Toddler T found a snake. I liked this outfit but when staring down a snake in the back yard trying to see it if was dangerous, I wished I was wearing something a little more suited for snake-wrangling like lots of layers and steel capped boots! Snake catcher confirmed it was just a tree snake and it slithered off happily into the tree. After trying twice to get into the house. 😱 We do a quick scan of the yard now before we let the boys or Cooper out!

Slouchy Tees, Shorts and LV Speedy bag for Summer

I'm trying to be smarter about what I have in my wardrobe and question the need for multiple items (like this jersey dress or another black maxi dress). The tees I'm wearing below are the exception. I bought one on sale at The Iconic in 2013 and then over a couple more seasons bought a grey one, striped one and a black one.

When I buy multiples of the same item at once I never seem to keep them all. When I love something so much I buy another after wearing the first one a while, I tend to wear them all frequently.

What I wore:

burgundy slouchy v neck atmos&here tee Jeanswest bermuda denim shorts studded sandals summer SAHM style | AwayFromBlue

Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere | Away From The Blue
Necklace: Ruby Olive Softies Charlotte teething necklace
TeeAtmos&Here rolled sleeve oversized tee in wine (similar in black or grey)
ShortsJeanswest Trinity Bermuda denim shorts (currently on sale!)
ShoesRebecca Minkoff Georgina studded gladiator sandals in blush (on sale!)
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

Simple jeans and tee outfit for a casual catch-up before Christmas with some other mums at the ABA. I wasn't sure if I should dress up for it, as I put the boys in little Christmas outfits. But in the end I decided just to be comfortable for running around. There were some mothers who dressed up and some who were just casual like me, so I didn't feel out of place. The relaxed tee and denim shorts were perfect for the style challenges on instagram too!

I really liked this outfit. Feels like every time I wear this slouchy tee I am happy with my outfit, it's been a wise purchase. Even if I have only worn it 14 times in three and a half years since I bought it.

Last worn: burgundy tee, bermuda denim shorts, studded sandals, Louis Vuitton speedy Bandouliere bag.

More slouchy tees from Atmos&Here under $50:

Sizing tip: if it's regular fit go for your usual size. If it says relaxed fit, best to size down.

ShortsJeanswest 'Scarlette' printed shorts
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

I've worn an outfit similar to this before, just with the striped version of this tee! I really liked how comfortable this was. Wore this near the end of December, when we had to brave the shops and get some essentials at the pharmacy and try not to tempted by all the post-Christmas sales. The outfit fit the style challenge prompts for #DAREcember and #SummerStyleFile on instagram as well.

Unlike the last time where I wore an oversized tee with these shorts, I actually liked the voluminous pieces together. I think the necklace was the perfect pop against the black tee. It was a perfect outfit for a hot day that finished with a swim in the pool.

While there are times I'll go through my wardrobe and remove things I own multiples of (like this colour block top), I'm always glad I bought multiples of this tee. They've worked through two pregnancies, are perfect for breastfeeding and with a half-tuck are extremely good at disguising a saggy mum-tum.

Slouchy tees are clearly one of my wardrobe staples! As I continue #6monthsWithoutShopping I'll hopefully identify more wardrobe staples to make smarter shopping decisions in the future.

Navy Tops, Prints and Louis Vuitton Damier Bags

I've been enjoying wearing my Louis Vuitton bags lately. Although my MM neverfull and speedy bandouliere are printed, I tend to see them as simple bags to wear and will happily wear them when I have a printed piece in my outfit.

I've learnt from experience that it's best to wear a printed bag with just one other printed piece of clothing, I like the outfits better that way. Plain navy tops seemed a good choice to wear with the prints.

What I wore:

Necklace: Nibbly Bits Wilma teething necklace in pale daffodil
TankMEV Britney bubble tank in mood indigo C/O Zibibo
Skirt: Garfunkle Australia pleated print skirt
ShoesWittner 'Jasmarie' studded sandals
BagLouis Vuitton MM damier azur neverfull

Why I wore it:

Wore this on a hot day with another specialist for baby boy. The big neverfull tote was ideal for carrying around all of the paperwork required. I have the MM size and it's perfect for me!

I was attempting to organise and declutter one day when I came across this skirt that I'd put aside with all of my other officewear pieces. No point in having them out taking up space in my wardrobe while I'm on maternity leave. I realised it would be nice to wear casually on days where I didn't want shorts or a maxi skirt though, so I kept it out and boxed up the rest of my workwear.

If if you're wondering why I'm not back at work yet, while I returned to work early when toddler T was a baby, I'm not doing that this time. I'm taking the full year of maternity leave I'm entitled to with Baby Boy. Yes, Australia does have awesome maternity leave entitlements.

As it was December, the #SummerStyleFile instagram style challenge was on so this pleated skirt fit the "pleats please" challenge nicely. I really liked this outfit, I was unsure about the black printed skirt with navy top at first but it turned out looking okay and I felt really comfortable in this all day. The yellow teething necklace just ties it all together. Can't believe it's been 2 years since I last wore this skirt! It needs worn more frequently. Hopefully now I'm going 6 months without shopping and trying to achieve 30 wears on everything I'll actually wear it!

Bag: Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

Just under two years ago I had a wardrobe detox session with a personal stylist. I'd recently purchased these shorts at the time and was excited about them. One of the suggested outfits the stylist came up with was to wear a darker top with these shorts and make it look a little like a playsuit. At the time I made a note to try it when I got such a top in my wardrobe. It was the first outfit that came to mind when I saw this navy tank on sale at Kmart, so I was pleased to give the combination a go at last. The shorts were perfect for the two style challenges on instagram too, white in the print for Summer Style File and swishy for Darecember.

Like the outfit above, I really enjoyed wearing this. Wore it for a quiet day so it was one of those outfits you feel are a bit of a waste as you didn't do anything special in them! I've already worn it again with different accessories as I liked this outfit so much.

Casual Striped Outfits. Tank and Maxi Skirt, Drop Waist Tee Dress

While I am back in the office, I don't have to go into work every day and still have a couple of days a week just for baby. I'll continue to share my casual stay at home mum style when I'm not at work. Here are two more life with baby outfits. Both featuring stripes of course! I'm sure I have more stripes than blue in my wardrobe now...

Here's what I wore to take baby T to playgroup:
bright purple tank bead statement necklace striped pleated maxi skirt LV speedy B damier ebene
SunglassesRayban new Wayfarers
Necklace: Nibbly Bits Abacus necklace in pop
TankJeanswest Jenni basic singlet in Royal Lilac purple
Skirt: thrifted black and white pleated striped maxi skirt from AWLQ jumble sale
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere (with Coach feather bag charm)

For a while now I've been thinking about taking baby T to a playgroup. Now he's mobile he's sure to get some enjoyment out of interacting with other babies often. After some encouragement from a friend, I finally found a local one and signed up. I was pleased I did. The hall we meet in is air conditioned and absolutely stuffed full of toys.

The only thing they don't have is highchairs, which is where maxi skirts come in handy! The group is on right near baby T's lunch time. Now he's bigger, he just has solids for lunch and he can make quite a bit of mess. I ended up sitting down on the floor and spreading my skirt out like a little blanket for him so that all the crumbs were caught and not smooshed into the carpet. I've mentioned doing this before when I wore a maxi dress, but I still think it's a clever little 'function' of a maxi skirt or dress, to create a little play mat for baby.

I wore the bright tank as I like pairing this maxi skirt with bright tops, and the teething necklace in case baby T got grouchy when we were at playgroup. Of course I didn't need to worry, there were so many toys to capture his attention.

Last worn: Ray-ban wayfarerspurple tankstriped skirt, HavaianasLouis Vuitton Speedy Bandouliere.

Here's what I wore for day care pickup and drop off:

DressAtmos&Here 'California' drop waist tee dress (on sale in a cute pastel blue)
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs

Another casual day care pick up/drop off outfit. Usually I'd at least think of my outfits the evening before, but I had no idea what to wear when I woke up in the morning. I went with the easy option of a dress! It's been a couple months since I last wore this one, so it was due another wear.

Had the opportunity to work from home, which was wonderful. I thought the dress was casual and comfortable for working from home in the heat, but still professional enough for all of the virtual meetings I attended through the day and for doing the day care run. I am very lucky to be able to work from home, it is perfect for getting to day care early to maximise cuddle time with baby T.

Stripes, Skirts and Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandouliere Bag in Damier Ebene

First up, have you shopped the Shopbop sale yet?!

15% off orders of $250+
20% off orders of $500+
25% off orders of $1000+

It's been a while since my last style challenges, so when Vanessa posted her Style and Shenanigans Colour challenge, I was eager to give it a go again. I've posted my thoughts about style challenges before and I think they can be a good way to help me wear more of my wardrobe and not just go for the same pieces all the time. It was a short challenge, just 5 days long. Below are two of the looks.

Here's what I wore to spend the day with my mum:
Peach ruffle cami striped jersey maxi skirt LV Speedy B 30 damier Ebene
SunglassesRayban new Wayfarers
SingletJeanswest peach ruffle cami
SkirtAT by Atmos&Here Mars striped maxi skirt
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere (with Coach feather bag charm)

The challenge for the day was 'pastel central'. I thought this peach cami was perfect. I really like pairing cami tops and maxi skirts together, I've done it a few times now, nice and cool for summer. I am still so incredibly lucky my sister didn't want this top any more - a great piece for me I picked up in one of her wardrobe clear outs! Every now and then when we get the urge to clean our wardrobes we will let each other comb through the bags before taking them off to be donated. I've got some lovely pieces that way, and it has to be said I've got a few of my old clothes back that way as well, hehe!

I really liked this outfit - the only thing I didn't like was how the top slid up and bunched around my waist through the day, looked odd as the skirt is quite fitted around the waist. I'd maybe try belt it next time to see if that helps to keep it in place.

Last worn: Ray-Ban wayfarerspeach cami, striped maxi skirt, Havaianas, Louis Vuitton Speedy bandouliere.

Here's what I wore to visit the doctors:
pattern mixing striped tank printed green skirt outfit

Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere
SunniesRayban new Wayfarers
TankGlassons striped tank in black and white
SkirtFrench Connection green and black printed skirt
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere (with Coach feather bag charm)

The challenge was 'jewel tones' like emerald green, so this green skirt was ideal! I tried to wear it a little differently and try a bit of print mixing, but I think it's too much. Maybe if I'd worn a plain bag with it it would have looked better. I just always wear this skirt with a plain black top, wanted to try something a little different. Seemed like a nice idea in the morning when I was getting dressed, but after looking at the photos I didn't really like how the outfit looked. Although people were encouraging on instagram, it's not one of my favourite outfits.

I haven't worn this skirt often. In the 3 years I've had the blog...this is only it's fifth wear. 1, 2, 3, 4 and now. To be fair, it is a fixed waist skirt that was impossible to wear during pregnancy. It's one of the pieces I bought back when I was starting out with my corporate wardrobe, and I wore it a lot. But over the years I started buying and wearing pencil skirts more, and it's just been neglected.

There is nothing wrong with the skirt - it's pretty, it gets compliments, it's good for my business casual office as well as days off...but I think it's time for it to leave my wardrobe. If I do want to wear a pleated printed skirt, I still have this one. I don't need two similar pieces that aren't worn often! I'm a little more adventurous with the other skirt too, I find yellow and black easier to wear than green and black. I don't just pick a black top to wear with it all the time!

Leaving my Wardrobe: French Connection Green and Black Printed Skirt

(Pics all the way back to 2008 before my blogging days, for your amusement! I really did like wearing this skirt with a plain black top...)

Theme Park Style. Plain Tops and Printed Bottoms!

Two more similarly themed outfits! Plain tops worn with printed pieces - shorts and a cute pleated skirt.

Here's what I wore to visit a theme park:
Casual Summer Theme Park Sight Seeing Outfit Shorts and Tee LV Speedy B
NecklaceNibbly Bits Wilma necklace in pale daffodil
TeeJeanswest 'Lucy' colourblock tee in grey marle/rosebud
ShortsJeanswest 'Scarlette' printed shorts (on sale!)
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere (with Coach feather bag charm)

The style challenge for the day was 'a statement necklace'. The baby teething necklaces I wear work as statement necklaces, as well as being great things for baby T to chew on and play with!

We spent the day at the Sea World theme park on the Gold Coast (completely different and separate from SeaWorld in America). It was forecast to be a really hot day, so I wanted to wear something that would keep me cool, but still be comfortable for a lot of walking around Sea World and looking after baby T, as well as going on some of the rides. The tee was good to keep my shoulders covered from the sun. These printed shorts were a much better option than denim shorts as we got wet going on the water rides and they dried out quickly during the day. I did think about wearing more supportive shoes like my Converse because of all the walking we would be doing, but it was much too hot to consider anything other than my Havaianas!

Baby T is still so small (only 7 months old), so I wasn't sure how much fun he would have at Sea World, but he really enjoyed it! He was even big enough to go on a few rides, and he had fun looking at all of the animals too. Although he missed the polar bears and the dolphins as he was napping! I'm looking forward to taking him again when he is bigger - he will be able to enjoy some of the shows instead of napping through them, and learn from all the educational stuff around the theme park. Plus the 'rescue, rehab and release' message Sea World Gold Coast operates under is a wonderful way for him to think about all animals, not just marine life!

Here's what I wore to spend the morning with my grandparents:

Tank: Jeanswest round neck lace detail top
SkirtFrench Connection green and black printed skirt
Shoes: Wittner 'Jasmarie' studded sandals

The style challenge for the day was 'mimic a style you love' - so I shared a pic of when I tried on a pair of boyfriend jeans. They didn't suit me, so I didn't buy them.

This is what I wore for the day - I spent the morning with my grandparents. Both the top and the skirt are pieces that haven't been worn a lot lately, so I wanted to give them a go. While I'm not really happy with how they worked together, I do love both pieces separately so they are staying in my wardrobe. Wearing this top again just reminded me of how much I love it, has been far too long since I last wore it! Need to wear it more, as I commented last time how little I'd been wearing it too. The skirt hasn't been worn in over a year and a half, but I did try to wear it in that time - I just couldn't zip it over the baby belly!

Feminine Pleated Skirt and Ruffle Cami | Casual SAHM Outfit - Grey Tank, Denim Shorts, Printed Kimono

Two very different outfits today! One with a bit of thought put into it, and one with minimal thought, time or effort!

Here's what I wore to go out shopping:
SunniesRayban new Wayfarers
NecklaceDogeared silver wishbone necklace
TopJeanswest peach ruffle cami
Skirt: Garfunkle Australia pleated print skirt
Shoes: Wittner 'Bolla' black bow detail flats
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey

The style challenge for the day was 'let's feel feminine today', so I was thinking of wearing one of my cute little pleated skirts. I have a few pleated skirts similar to this and I don't wear them all very often, so it seemed like a good idea to try wear them and see if any should leave my wardrobe.

As it was a hot and humid day, I wanted to wear a lightweight cami too. I liked this peach one, but wasn't sure what skirt it would go with. The pastel colour and ruffles fit the feminine theme well! This skirt was the first one I pulled out to try and I liked how the peach and yellow went together, so decided to wear this out to go shopping in the morning with baby T.

The challenge prompt gave me the confidence to go out and wear something I wouldn't normally have done, so it was a good outfit that way. Although I wasn't sure after looking at the photos, I felt comfortable all day when I was wearing this, I think it came together really well. I've always worn this printed skirt with neutral and rather plain tops, was good to step out of my comfort zone a little. I've decided this skirt is definitely staying in my wardrobe despite only being worn 3 times in 3 years - hopefully I'll be more adventurous with wearing it in the future so it will get lots of wear-time!

Baby T had a really grizzly day the day before, after we got home from the shops he wasn't too happy...he then had a bit of a disturbed night. So the next day, all I wanted to wear was comfortable clothes.

When I'd gotten dressed I'd just gone for a comfy tank and shorts, that was all I needed to walk baby and Cooper in the morning. No thought or planning needed! I'm so thankful I'm still on maternity leave so that I can adjust my plans for the day to match baby T's moods most of the time. I'd decided to just skip taking outfit photos for the day and have a lazy day. By lunch time I was feeling a little less frazzled though, and as the style challenge for the day was 'try a print' I realised I could dress up my lazy stay at home tank and shorts outfit by adding the printed kimono jacket. Something to add a little interest to the plain outfit for having a visitor over too.

This kimono is an old sale find that I've never really worn a lot, I'm making more of an effort to wear it to justify keeping it in my wardrobe. I love how it makes a plain outfit look a little more polished...and it came in so helpful on this day to make me look a little more put-together and maybe just a little less tired than I felt. It's staying in my wardrobe as it is an awesome statement piece. I've worn it 8 times now since I've been blogging, not a bad cost per-wear for a $5 sale bargain, but still something I need to continue to wear to justify holding onto it.

Last worn: paisley kimono, grey tank, denim shorts, Havaianas.
