Kimonos In Winter With Skinny Jeans, Grey Tees and Converse

Sticking with the jeans and tee outfit formula that has been on repeat lately - it's perfect for winter days! To mix things up a little, I'm wearing some slightly different colour schemes with grey tees, red (and burgundy) jeans, and then some very different kimonos to suit the different temperatures that week!

What I wore:

Jacket: Jeanswest Melanie floral kimono
Necklace: Target silver Alisha trinity pendant necklace
Top: thrifted Cotton on grey tunic tee
Jeans: thrifted Emerson red skinny jeans
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in black
BagRebecca Minkoff MAB Camera Bag in almond

Why I wore it:

I was glad it was a warm day to give me another chance to wear this duster kimono - I picked it up in the January sales and while it was a complete impulse buy I've been liking how easy it's been to integrate into my wardrobe. I've used the colours in the prints to match it to yellow and a different shade of red before, I knew it would make a great matchy-matchy combo with these red skinny jeans.

Like the skinny jeans that were a thrift find, this grey tunic was another opshop find. And since I got it in a "fill a bag for $5" sale it works out to about 63 cents! With the bright jeans and the printed kimono I thought a nice neutral grey tee was a great piece to wear in between and I was hoping the thrifted pieces would bring me luck at the opshop! I really liked the silver necklace with this outfit too, even if the hardware on the Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag is gold.

After the school drop off the little one and I headed out to our recently reopened opshop. There were a few new rules, such as using hand sanitiser and wearing the provided gloves, but it's a small store so actual social distancing was tricky! I bought a couple of things - a book for myself and some DVDs and a PJ masks playset for the kids. I didn't get a chance to look at much else as my son was fairly insistent that we had to pay for the toy and take it home right away so he could play with it 😂 It is missing a few pieces based on what I can find online but it was just $2 so I wasn't going to say no!

Last worn: floral duster kimono, grey tunic tee, silver necklace, red skinny jeans, Converse, Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag.

Other ways to wearfloral duster kimono and shorts, grey tunic tee and pencil skirt, red skinny jeans and peplum tee, Converse and printed dresses, Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag and matching boots.

Perfect for pregnancyConverse in second trimester.

Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC vs MAB Camera Bag

What I wore:

JacketRebecca Minkoff Ruana poncho
Necklace: Colette tortoise shell acrylic disc tassel necklace
TeeAtmos&Here charcoal grey v neck tee
Jeans: Jeanswest Harper skinny pant in Russet
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in black
BagRebecca Minkoff striped coated canvas mini MAC in berry stripe

Why I wore it:

Unlike the kimono above, this was made for winter! Last time I wore it it was much too warm, but when the winter weather arrived again later in the week this was the perfect outfit. I wore this to work from home, and to pop out in the afternoon to pick up some party supplies for my son's upcoming birthday party.

This poncho / kimono is just a big cosy knitted blanket so it was perfect for the cooler evening and so comfortable for working from home. But a more dressed up option than an actual blanket or my usual go-to bathrobe 😂

This darker grey tee is one of my favourites and it was definitely overdue a wear again! With the darker grey I thought these burgundy skinny jeans were a good accompaniment. The woven kimono makes enough of a statement on its own but I couldn't resist adding a couple extra prints with the striped Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC bag and the tortoiseshell necklace.

The only downside to this outfit was that I kept getting the kimono caught on things all day!

How You Can Wear It:

Kimonos are fun ways to add more interest to a plain shorts and tee outfit. While a longer sleeved duster kimono might work on a warmer winter day, a cosy knitted version comes in helpful on the colder days!

Two Ways To Wear a Graphic Tee With Printed Pieces

With working from home, I'm wearing a lot of tees when I do get out of loungewear or pyjamas. Thankfully over the past few years of motherhood I've realised tees are a wardrobe staple for me and I have a few in my wardrobe!

Today I'm continuing the tee wearing and sharing two different ways I recently wore a couple of graphic tees, both with other printed pieces in my outfit.

What I wore:

navy graphic tee and red printed maxi skirt | stay at home style Away From Blue

Tee: Monsterthreads star print graphic tee
Skirtthrifted Billabong 'Don't Think Of It' bikini red printed maxi skirt
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas

Why I wore it:

This maxi skirt is a great work from home piece as it's so comfortable with the elastic waist! And all that fabric is like having your legs wrapped up in a blanket 😂

I wear this red maxi skirt with navy a lot, I really like the combination. This is the first time I've worn this graphic tee with it though, I wasn't sure if the print on the tee would be too much with the print on the skirt. Isolating at home was the perfect time to give this new combination a try, as aside from the postman and some neighbours, oh and my in laws, no one saw this outfit. I really liked it though and I'm happy I tried these two things together!

Last worn: navy graphic tee, red printed maxi skirt, Havaianas.

Other ways to wearnavy graphic tee and shorts, red printed maxi skirt and leather jacket.

What Bag I'd Wear With These Outfits:

If I was still using and enjoying my handbag collection and not worried about transferring germs inside the house whenever I swapped them out, this would be the bag I'd wear with these outfits - the metallic silver goes with everything!

What I wore:

floral kimono and primark Edinburgh graphic tee olive skinny jeans | away from the blue

JacketCotton On 'Gemma' cocoon kimono in Laos blossom navy print
Tee: Primark Edinburgh white graphic tee
Jeans: Jeanswest Vicki skinny pant in moss green
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas

Why I wore it:

This was another opportunity to try something new, with a graphic tee and floral print. I wore this when I was so close to 30 wears of this floral kimono, thought I'd try something a little different and wear it with this Edinburgh graphic tee I picked up on our Europe trip last year.  I thought the blue in the graphic would work nicely with the navy kimono. Plus it was a nice way to change it up a little as I've worn this tee and olive jeans together before.

Not 100% sure this worked, not one of my favourite outfits but it was fun to try. And with the olive jeans it was comfortable and warm for a quick trip to the post office after helping the kids complete their online learning at home. So good that the schools are back so I don't have to struggle with online learning for a 4 and 5 year old any more!

2 Ways To Wear A Grey Skater Dress: Colourful and Simple | Weekday Wear Link Up

Well what a difference a few weeks makes in this crazy new world. I wore these outfits back in April, just 3 weeks ago. Life is so different now! Australia has a roadmap for lifting all the restrictions after Coronavirus, and we are currently in stage one that gives us a lot more freedom than when I wore this dress! This was my only time going out that week, but now I'm out of the house multiple times a week for the school run.

I added a lot of colour to wear this dress for staying at home, but then simplified it later in the day when we went out to the doctors to get all of our flu shots.

What I wore:

Jeanswest Melanie floral kimono with asos grey babydoll skater dress adding colour with accessories | awayfromblue

awayfromblue Instagram | Jeanswest Melanie floral kimono with grey skater dress bright Ruby Olive necklace
Jacket: Jeanswest Melanie floral kimono
NecklaceRuby Olive Art series long striped pod necklace
DressAsos grey skater dress
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas

Why I wore it:

I like this little grey skater dress but it really needs to be worn more! With a morning at home on a slightly cooler autumn day, I decided to dress it up a little with this duster kimono instead of my go-to  at home cover up, my cosy old bath robe! I really liked how this made me feel a little more pulled together and dressed up, and I liked the bright colours the floral print added. Kimonos are great for that.

I still felt the outfit was missing a little something though so I added in a bright necklace too. The kids enjoyed the necklace as well! They always play with my accessories whenever we have a cuddle.

This was an easy and comfortable outfit and simple to change afterwards when we headed out.

Last worn: floral duster kimono, statement necklace, grey skater dress, Havaianas.

What's In My Bag: Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandouliere

awayfromtheblue Instagram | grey skater dress asos baydoll with louis vuitton speedy bandouliere bag sneakers
DressAsos grey skater dress
ShoesNew Balance white and blue sneakers
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

This is the simplified version of the outfit above, that I wore out the house to head to the doctors. No extra cover up, as it was warmer by then and I just wanted an easy outfit I could wash as soon as I got home. I left the necklace at home too so it wouldn't get covered in germs - especially with holding the kids close for their flu vaccinations, I didn't want them playing with it and possibly transferring germs.

I've been using my Rebecca Minkoff micro Bedford bag a lot recently, but this time around I went with my Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere. Just in case the kids needed their water bottles (both fit in here) and because I could wipe this down when we got home and sanitise it.

And of course my New Balance sneakers as they are the only shoes I am wearing out of the house at the moment!

Thankfully the vaccinations went well - both kids were really brave and we were in and out quite quickly. I was glad we could go as a family so hubby and I could take a kid each, even if it meant we took up the entire surgery as they can't have more than 4 people in the (small) waiting room at a time!

Graphic Tees & Skinny Jeans: Working From Home Style | Weekday Wear Link Up

Keeping it simple for my working from home style during isolation, with graphic tees and skinny jeans. Both of these jeans are extremely comfortable, perfect for sitting at my computer and yet practical for jumping up every few minutes to help the kids with their online learning, or to get them yet another snack 😂

What I wore:

floral kimono, mickey mouse graphic tee and skinny jeans | away from the blue

awayfromtheblue Instagram | navy floral kimono with black skinny jeans, mickey mouse graphic tee
JacketCotton On 'Gemma' cocoon kimono in Laos blossom navy print
TeeUniqlo Mickey Mouse 'Mickey Stands' short sleeve graphic tee
JeansNobody Denim Siren skinny super high-rise jeans in power black denim (c/o)
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas

Why I wore it:

It's crazy to think I first wore this tee a year ago when we were in Disneyland Paris, as part of our Europe trip. Seems like a lifetime ago now, especially with all the changes around the world and the travel restrictions. It was fun to wear this again, I did the cliche "get everyone Mickey tees to wear to Disneyland" thing and I wasn't sure how much wear it would get afterwards but I have worn it a handful of times. Much more than I expected. It's super soft and has such good memories attached.

The floral kimono was needed in the cooler morning, as it was a bit of a dressier option than my usual dressing gown for staying warm! I did end up taking it off at lunchtime though.

Really liked how this outfit turned out - the high amount of stretch in these Nobody denim skinny jeans make them so comfortable to wear!

What Bag I'd Wear With These Outfits:

While I'm at home my bags are staying in my wardrobe, but if I was wearing these outfits outside the house I'd wear this bag with them. It's the perfect neutral.

What I wore:

awayfromtheblue Instagram | kisschasy blue band tee with olive skinny jeans
Tee: Kisschasy blue tape band tee
Jeans: Jeanswest Vicki skinny pant in moss green
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas

Why I wore it:

Another pair of super comfortably jeans, I actually wore these on our long-haul flights from Brisbane to Europe last year - very comfortable for being at home. Again, it was nice to get out of the pyjamas and loungewear I've been wearing a lot lately while isolating at home with social distancing.

This Kisschasy tee hasn't got a lot of wear - it was from one of their earlier tours, but after Jess had a challenge to wear band tees it got me going through my big box of tees from concerts I went to pre-kids and I found this. I realised this should come into my regular wardrobe, it's fun to wear. I like how the lighter blue went with these olive skinny jeans too! I've worn them a lot with navy in the past, it's nice to try a different shade.

30 Ways To Wear: Navy Floral Kimono #30wears

After Monday's Ways To Wear post, I'm sharing another one as part of the monthly 30 wears series.

Each month I look through my blog archives of daily outfit pics (I have over 8 years worth!) and share with you something that's reached 30 or more wears, to give you some outfit ideas and inspiration for how you can wear something similar in your wardrobe. I started doing this monthly challenge after seeing The True Cost documentary which I highly recommend watching if you haven't already!

This month, it's this beautiful Cotton On navy floral cocoon kimono!

30 Ways To Wear: Navy Floral Kimono

30 ways to wear a navy floral kimono #30wears challenge | away from the blue blog

I've been wearing this kimono on frequent repeat recently as it was so close to 30 wears and I wanted to get it there before the cooler autumn weather set in in Brisbane. Even with isolating at home since March, I managed to hit my goal. I do wear this kimono a little in the cooler weather anyway as it's really like a giant blanket, which has made it perfect for these isolation / working from home in isolation days!

Cost Per Wear

Just like the last navy kimono I hit 30 wears with, this was another pregnancy purchase back in January 2016. It's just a floral print instead of the geometric print of my other kimono, and a cocoon style. It was originally $39.95 at Cotton On, reduced to $3 on sale at the outlet. I couldn't say no to that! At 30 wears that brings the cost per wear down to 10 cents a wear, which I'm really happy with. It's definitely been a valuable addition to my wardrobe.

Navy Floral Kimono With Yellow Tops

5 ways to wear a navy floral kimono with yellow tops denim outfits | awayfromblue

I really like blue and yellow together, and as you can see from the mix of yellow tops here this navy kimono works so well with any shade of yellow, from pastel to mustard!

Navy Floral Kimono With Black

3 navy and black outfit ideas with a navy floral kimono | away from the blue

Black and navy are another colour combination I like to wear. The neutral colours look lovely together, as you can see by how this kimono works well with the different amounts of black, like a maxi dress, tank or skinny jeans.

Navy Floral Kimono With Pink and Purple

navy floral kimono worn with pink and purple accesories | awayfromtheblue

Pink and purple are other colours that go so well with navy. I like wearing pink with this kimono as it matches the pink in the floral print, even if it's something as small as adding a pink bag to my outfit. With purple, just like with pink, any shade seems to work really well with this kimono - as you can see with the darker purple jeans, the brighter purple bag, and the lilac tee.

Floral Kimono With Prints

print mixing outfits with navy floral kimono | away from blue

I've tried print mixing with this floral kimono a few times, with mixed results! While none of these outfits are ones I'd repeat again, I do think stripes and florals are always a fun mix, and maybe I just haven't found the perfect stripe to pair with this kimono yet!

Navy Floral Kimono With Green

5 ways to wear a navy kimono floral print with green | away from blue

This is a colour combination I wasn't too sure about a few year ago, it's only recently I've been trying navy and green together. In fact some of these outfits were my first few attempts at the navy and green combination! Olive green or a true bright forest green both work equally well with this navy kimono.

Navy Floral Kimono With Grey

4 outfit ideas floral navy kimono with grey tee | awayfromblue

A grey tee is a wardrobe staple for me and something I wear frequently. I've perviously shared 30 ways to wear a grey tee, and a kimono is a frequent go-to topper for me over a grey tee to stop an outfit looking too plain. This kimono certainly adds a lot of print and colour to a basic grey tee!

Navy Floral Kimono With A Baby Bump

maternity outfits with a navy floral kimono away from the blue blog

This kimono was an early third trimester pregnancy purchase and I enjoyed wearing it in that final trimester! I had a third trimester capsule wardrobe I stuck to in my last pregnancy and I found kimonos like this one really helped change up my outfits a little so it didn't feel like I was wearing the same thing over and over. A kimono is a fun topper over a basic maternity tank, and it always fits no matter how big the bump gets!

22 Ways To Wear A Grey Tee: Weekday Wear Link Up

For today's Weekday Wear Linkup I'm sharing a bright and colourful outfit I wore to work from home, and sadly the last wearing of this grey tee, so I'm looking back at the 22 wears I managed to get from it!

What I wore:

work from home colourful style with magenta skinny jeans grey tee and floral navy kimono | awayfromblue

awayfromblue Instagram | navy floral cocoon blanket kimono with grey tee magenta skinny jeans
JacketCotton On 'Gemma' cocoon kimono in Laos blossom navy print
Necklace: Uniquely Made with Love Sea Change necklace
Tee: Atmos&Here grey v-neck tee with rolled sleeves
PantsSass & Bide The Winning Day Lovestate Jeans in magenta
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas

Why I wore it:

I adore this tee - so much so that I bought it in three colours! I have a burgundy one, this grey one and a black one. The black one has already left my wardrobe, I was hoping to get this grey tee to 30 wears but this last wear just confirmed to me it's stretched out just like the other black tee, sadly!

The super soft and stretchy fabric has elastane in it, which while making it very soft also doesn't survive a lot of heavy duty washes (and during breastfeeding a while ago I had to wash everything at 60℃, breastfeeding mums will know the pain!). This tee was frequently worn then but seemed to be coping much better than the black one and keeping its shape well. Until I realised I was constantly tugging and pulling at it all day, even though I wasn't doing anything too adventurous and just working from home. I'm sad it's left my wardrobe after just 22 wears, but it did last longer than the black version and it was my own fault not caring for it properly!

Issues with the tee aside, I really liked this outfit! In the cooler morning and with a video call booked in for work, I swapped my usual stay at home loungewear for this slouchy tee and the colourful but cosy floral kimono. I love how the navy with the pink flowers went with the magenta skinny jeans!

Last worn: floral kimono, beaded necklace, grey tee, Havaianas, Sass and Bide magenta skinny jeans.

Other ways to wearfloral kimono and maxi dress, grey tee and maxi skirt, Sass and Bide magenta skinny jeans and blazer.

22 Ways To Wear A Grey Tee

Much like the time I showed you 30 ways to wear a (different) grey tee, I wear this a lot with denim! I was hoping to hit 30 wears with this tee but it was just too annoying to wear - I like comfortable clothes, I don't like to be pulling or fussing with what I wear! I also don't like worrying about the neckline creeping down when I'm on a work call!

I got it on sale for $17.46 from The Iconic, back in 2014 when I could never resist an Atmos & Here sale at The Iconic! It's definitely my most worn of the three colours I have this tee in, even though it didn't hit my goal of getting worn 30 times. It works out to 79 cents a wear, which isn't too bad, but I really wish I'd got more wears from it!

Here are some of the ways I styled it over the years:

Grey Tee and Blue Denim

5 ways to wear a grey tee and blue denim | awayfromtheblue

The most classic outfit you can ever have - a grey tee and blue denim. Shorts jeans, a grey tee works in all seasons. And you can always add a necklace, bag or kimono (or all three!) for a little extra colour.

Grey Tee in Monochrome Outfit

3 grey tee monochrome outfit ideas | away from blue

Such a simple way to wear a grey tee - just add something black like a skirt or jeans, and you have an easy monochrome outfit. Adding a bright necklace or bag is a good way to introduce a colour pop if you don't want to stick to just black and white.

Grey Tee and Colourful Pants

5 ways to wear a grey tee and colourful pants | awayfromtheblue

Of course it's not just blue jeans a grey tee works with! I liked wearing this grey tee with my more colourful jeans and pants, the neutral goes with any colour.

Grey Tee and Print Mixing

3 print mixing outfit ideas with a grey tee | away from blue
Taking advantage of this neutral grey tee as the base of an outfit, it lets me add in brightly coloured scarves and even a little bit of print mixing! From the subtle striped cardigan and leopard scarf, or the bolder chevron jeans and magenta skull scarf, the grey tee is a great backdrop for a mix of prints.

Grey Tee and Maxis

grey tees and maxi skirt 6 mum style outfit ideas | away from the blue

A grey tee is as much of a staple in my wardrobe as maxi skirts. It's an easy outfit for a warmer day, this grey tee goes with any colour or print of skirt. I've even layered it over a blue maxi dress before too, as you can see at the bottom there.

Denim Shorts, Printed Kimonos And V-Neck Tees With Micro Bedford Bag

I have a pretty basic casual stay at home isolation style, but when I do leave the house I'm taking the opportunity to wear one of my beloved handbags and kimonos. Even if I feel a little over dressed!

What I wore:

Shorts: thrifted Jeanswest distressed denim shorts
ShoesNew Balance white and blue sneakers
BagRebecca Minkoff Micro Bedford zip satchel in twilight

Why I wore it:

Wore this to visit the doctors, before they had moved to telehealth appointments. I've been at this doctor's surgery for over a decade, so it was nice being able to talk to a trusted medical professional about everything that's happening and the best ways to keep the kids safe. It was a strange experience with waiting in our car before being called in to go through to the doctor - the waiting room has been striped back to just a handful of chairs for social distancing!

Wanted to be bright and colourful so tried this pastel yellow tee with the navy floral kimono. I really liked the combination, even if I did really feel like a necklace would have been the final finishing touch! (I've mentioned before due to how often the kids and I play with my necklaces I don't feel safe wearing them outside the house, trying to minimise how many times I touch things and reduce the risk of transferring germs).

I did accessorise with the Rebecca Minkoff micro Beford bag - it's so cute in navy and goes with everything, which is helpful as it's one of the two "outdoors" bags I have, again to try minimise the germs!

Last worn: floral kimono, yellow tee, distressed denim shorts, New Balance sneakers, Rebecca Minkoff micro Bedford bag.

Other ways to wearfloral kimono and jeans, yellow tee with olive, distressed denim shorts and printed tee, Rebecca Minkoff micro Bedford bag with green.

Shorts: Jeanswest Sara distressed hot short

Why I wore it:

I felt that the kids needed to get out the house so we took Cooper on a short walk around the neighbourhood. Since hubby has been working from home as well, whenever I have needed to go out for groceries they have stayed home with him, and the schools are closed so there are no other outings and they needed to get out. It was good to see something outside our fence, and while we did see people out as well we kept a safe distance, with social distancing in place.

I felt a little overdressed for walking the dog, especially with the matchy-matchy purple tee and purple printed kimono, but when we saw a few neighbours outside too I was glad I'd changed out of my loungewear!

I only needed my phone and keys but brought this little Rebecca Minkoff micro Bedford bag along anyway as it was a good excuse to give it another wear. Cooper being chased by the kids all day every day now means he doesn't need as many walks as usual, and my knee injury means I can't walk very far anyway, but it was still good to get outside the house.

Last worn: purple kimono, lilac tee, black denim shorts, New Balance (above), Rebecca Minkoff micro Bedford (above).

Printed Kimonos Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

A printed kimono is a fun finishing layer with a staple shorts and tee outfit. It's a great way to add more colour and print. You can try contrasting colours like I have in the first outfit, or be a little more matching like in the second outfit.
