Colourful Outfits To Match Printed Kimonos

Even a glance at my blog or Instagram will tell you I love kimonos! With warm temperatures most of the year here in Brisbane they have become a wardrobe staple for me and are a great way to add a little more colour and interest to an outfit.

This time around I picked the kimonos I wanted to wear and created outfits based on the colours from the kimonos. It was a fun way to wear some of my recently purchased pieces!

What I wore:

Jeanswest Melanie floral kimono with Vickie turquoise tank and russet skinny jeans regan cross body bag | awayfromblue

Rebecca Minkoff Avery crossbody bag in burgundy | awayfromtheblue

awayfromblue | Jeanswest mum style outfit melanie floral kimono vickie button tank harper russet skinny pant burgundy turquoise
JacketJeanswest Melanie floral kimono
Necklace: Lovisa blue leaf long necklace
TankJeanswest Vickie button back tank in enamel blue (new purchase)
JeansJeanswest Harper skinny pant in Russet (new purchase)
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff Avery crossbody bag in burgundy

Why I wore it:

This is a very Jeanswest heavy outfit! The kimono, tank and jeans are all Jeanswest. As I explained with my post Christmas sale haul, my go-to store Jeanswest has gone into administration. Rather than spending all my Christmas gift cards through the year as usual, I spent all of them in one month in January, in case things change with the store possible closing, and they wouldn't be honoured later.

When I looked at what I'd bought I realised how well it all worked together, so I took the chance on that one day when we had slightly cooler temps with all the rain and it was under 30 degrees Celsius to wear my new jeans. Bit of a big day, with swimming lessons, almost being trapped in floodwaters, and a joint birthday party to attend. The humidity increased through the day too so I wasn't entirely happy with my choice to wear jeans instead of shorts, but I did love the outfit in the cooler morning! Even if the turquoise tank quickly creased like crazy!

My new jeans go so well with this burgundy Rebecca Minkoff Avery crossbody bag that my sister got me for Christmas, I just had to wear them together to continue the matchy-matchy with them both and the tank matching the tropical print on the kimono.

Last worn: tropical floral kimono, leaf necklace, Havaianas. First time I've worn the rust jeans and turquoise tank as they are recent purchases, and first time I've worn the Regan crossbody bag as it was a Christmas gift.

Why I wore it:

While this outfit copies the same formula as the outfit above, picking clothes and a bag to wear that match the floral print of the kimono, the outfit looks very different as this kimono has a different set of colours. Still just as easy to pull together as the first outfit though. I liked the pastel combination of the lilac tank with the blush shorts and this $1 sheer floral kimono from the opshop was a great buy!

I added the New Balance sneakers as we had a big day out planned and I knew my knee would need some extra support. (I injured it after Christmas and it's going to take months to heal). Took the kids into the city to visit the Water exhibition at GOMA. It was really interactive and they enjoyed it. The Riverbed installation was an actual river flowing through the gallery and a lot of rocks and gravel which was very difficult to walk on for me, definitely overdid it a bit!

It was a fun day out though, knee pain aside. After we'd been to the gallery we met hubby for lunch as he was working in the city.

Last worn: lilac tee, pearl tassel necklace, pink shorts, New Balance sneakers, purple Rebecca Minkoff MAB bag. First time I've worn the sheer floral kimono as it's a recent purchase.

Floral Kimonos Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

A fun floral kimono has so many possible outfits you can wear with it - shorts and a tee is a summer staple of course, but you can mix it up each time you wear it by picking clothes to wear that match the colours in the print. It creates a completely different outfit each time, even though you are following the same outfit formula and is so quick to pull together, very mum friendly!

What I Bought in December And January, And How I've Worn It

Well 2020 has been off to a strange start! And not just because of all the wild events recently, I'm talking specifically about my shopping. This is a personal style blog after all!

I started the new year with my intention, the same as last year, to spend less than I did the previous year. Yet at the end of January, I've bought a lot more than expected! I actually only have 1 Christmas gift card left! A few impulse buys and a few fear-driven purchases. I covered it all in the video below with a quick summary you can read through too.

What I Bought:

Why I Bought It:

Now my favourite store (Jeanswest) is in administration and closing stores I wanted to spend the last of my Christmas gift cards ASAP. They can change the terms and conditions with the gift cards when a chain is in administration and that has happened with other stores that have closed here in Australia, from requiring you to spend a set amount before you can use a gift card to just refusing to accept them.

I tried to shop sensibly and buy basics I can wear over and over, and I'm pleased with what I got but also it wasn't anything I really felt I needed. Although to be honest with a wardrobe the size of mine, there's nothing that's really a need! So pleased I got some cute things with the Christmas gifts I was given, and that I got to spend them before the rules around using gift cards possibly changes. Really hoping that Jeanswest doesn't shut down completely though - where else would I do the majority of my clothes shopping!?

How I've Worn It:

waht I've bought and how I've worn it: wardrobe remix with january Jeanswest sale finds

I have a rule that every time I want to buy something I have to think of two different ways I will immediately wear it that month. I didn't do too badly with this goal this month at all....the opshopped jacket doesn't suit the weather at all and so hasn't been worn, but I wasn't going to pass on a jacket for just $1! I bought more than I needed to this month for sure, usually I spread my gifts cards through the year but I was focused on spending all my Jeanswest ones this month. I did enjoy wearing everything and did quite well with the goal, but also didn't get to my twice a wear figure with the jeans and the jacket as they aren't suited for summer temps.

For the upcoming months...I'm either going to spend a fortune at the Jeanswest closing down sales or the closure of one of the stores I frequently shop in will help me meet my spend less target this year!

Maxi Skirts and V-Neck Tees With Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC Bag

I like to stick to my outfit formulas a lot, as you'll know if you follow my blog. A plain tee and a printed maxi skirt is one formula I wear often! It's such a simple outfit for a hot day, and sticking with a plain tee means you don't have to worry about prints clashing. You don't have to restrict yourself to neutrals either, I'm wearing two bright tees with equally colourful maxi skirts below.

What I wore:

cotton on raspberry tee with silver accessories and ally fashion floral boho border maxi skirt | awayfromblue

ally fashion blue border print floral maxi skirt with Rebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC | awayfromtheblue

Necklace: Tiffany & Co silver 5th Avenue notes heart pendant necklace
TeeCotton On deep v tee in washed desert rose
SkirtAlly Fashion blue border print floral maxi skirt
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas
BagRebecca Minkoff metallic silver mini MAC

Why I wore it:

Wearing a lot of new pieces here! It's so fun looking at my wardrobe after Christmas and seeing all the new combinations I can come up with! This raspberry pink tee, a gift from my mum, works so nicely with this blue floral maxi skirt, another gift from my mum! While there is pink in the print of the skirt, it's a slightly different shade. I still think they work so well together though.

I kept the accessories simple, sticking with plain silver, from the silver Tiffany necklace (a Christmas gift from the boys) to the silver bracelets I never take off and the metallic silver mini MAC bag. This bag goes with everything, such a staple for me.

Had a quiet morning at home with friends - we hosted Church Online at our place for a change. It's nice having the space to be able to do things like that in our new house!

Last worn: raspberry tee, blue floral maxi skirt, Havaianas, Rebecca Minkoff silver mini MAC bag. It's the first time I've worn the necklace as it was a Christmas present.

Other ways to wearraspberry tee and denim shorts, blue floral maxi skirt and turquoise tank, Rebecca Minkoff silver mini MAC bag and floral dress.

Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC Bag Review

What I wore:

Bracelets: the usual plus Roie Designs waxed leather cream howlite beaded wrap bracelet
BagRebecca Minkoff mini MAC in aquamarine with python embossed leather

Why I wore it:

Another bright and colourful outfit! I got this idea from Sheila and a comment she left on a previous post where I wore this red printed maxi skirt with a white tee and mustard scarf, saying the skirt would look good with a mustard tee. There is yellow on the print of the skirt so it seems like a great pairing, but I wasn't sure about the boldness of the two pieces together. When I picked up this pale yellow tee in the Jeanswest sales after Christmas, I knew I wanted to try wearing it with this skirt!

Although the red and yellow felt bold enough I couldn't resist adding a little extra colour with this aquamarine mini MAC bag. It's a firm favourite as I like the way it works with yellow! Kept the rest of my accessories simple and neutral to let the outfit shine.

This was the perfect combination of colourful and comfortable for attending a playdate with the wonderful Sasha, our kids had such a fun time together and despite a few interruptions we got a great chat in. She's such a sweet lady and blogger and I'm so glad to have had the chance to catch up with her again! Funnily enough I wore this maxi skirt last time I met up with her too!

Last worn: pale yellow tee, starburst necklace, red printed maxi skirt, studded sandals, Rebecca Minkoff aqua mini MAC bag.

How You Can Wear It:

A plain tee and printed maxi skirt is such an easy outfit for mum life - whether hosting friends at home or running around after your kids at the playground! For something a little different you can try a brightly coloured tee to wear with the maxi skirt, picking a colour out from the print to find the perfect colour of tee.

Blue Kimonos With Navy Tops and Shorts

Keeping it simple for the summer heat with shorts and kimonos! I love my kimonos over summer, I'm sharing an old favourite that's on frequent repeat as well as a new one I picked up in the January sales!

What I wore:

navy floral cocoon kimono with marle tee and pink cuffed shorts balenciaga first bag | awayfromblue

floral kimono and pink shorts with Balenciaga first bag in 2006 Blue India | awayfromtheblue

awayfromtheblue Instagram | floral cocoon kimono with pink shorts and balenciaga first bag

Necklace: Kmart rose gold and pink beaded necklace
TeeAtmos & Here Avery marle tee in navy
Shorts: thrifted pastel pink cotton shorts
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas
BagBalenciaga first bag in 2006 Blue India

Why I wore it:

Surprisingly, despite having both this kimono and the navy tee for a few years, I've never worn them together! I think the slightly different shade of navy from the marle tee works so nicely with the deeper navy on the floral kimono. The blush pink shorts are something that have been worn with this kimono a few times in the past, even though they don't match the pink in the print exactly I feel they compliment it nicely. And the rose gold and blush necklace matches them perfectly to tie it all together.

The turquoise Balenciaga first bag kind of matches the pale blue in the floral print, which was a happy coincidence as intended the bag to be another pop of colour for the outfit. It makes me happy when everything matches nicely!

This was a quick outfit to pull together for a busy day. We dropped off more stuff at the opshop, and then of course I bought a few more things when we went in to "just have a look", ha! Still the 2 pieces of clothing and 2 books we bought were a lot less than the 4 boxes and a bag full of clothes and other items that we had donated! I do tend to delay donating things until I have a car boot full as I always find something to buy every time I go. Then we had a lot of errands to run, thankfully most of them could be done in the comfort of the air-conditioned shopping centre as it was a very humid day!

Last worn: floral cocoon kimono, blush and rose gold necklace, navy marle tee, blush cotton shorts, Havaianas, Balenciaga first bag.

Other ways to wearfloral cocoon kimono and maxi dress, navy marle tee over a dress, blush cotton shorts and denim jacket, Balenciaga first bag and olive shorts.

Tank: MEV Britney bubble tank in mood indigo C/O
ShortsJeanswest Sara distressed hot short
Shoes: New Balance white and blue sneakers
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

I picked this navy tank to wear as I'm getting close to 30 wears with it and so I'm trying to reach for it more often to hit that number this year! I also liked the way it went with this recently purchased tie dye kimono. Especially when worn with the black shorts, it echos the colours in the tie dye print nicely.

Added the purple and gold necklace for a little touch of colour, and the Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere bag as I needed something waterproof for our day out at Sea World on the Gold Coast. We had quite a lot of rain that weekend, which put out a few fires thankfully, and it was predicted to rain more. Luckily it didn't start raining until we were in the car going home.

The shoes are actually super old ones I purchased out of necessity when I was in an accident and injured my knee years ago, before kids. I've kept them despite many wardrobe clear outs even though they are rarely worn (only on longer walks with the dogs) as they are nice to have "just in case". I've always had a bit of a weak knee with repeated knocks, accidents and bumps to it causing an old injury to be aggravated. It's good to have these for whenever my injury plays up.

I'm not a fan of the dad sneaker trend but with a day of walking around a theme park ahead of me and still being in a lot of knee pain after injuring myself again after Christmas, I needed a shoe that would support my knee as much as possible. Even if they don't go with my outfit, I always keep things real here on the blog and share what I actually wear. Plus it's the bags you come to see, not my boring shoe collection 😂

Other ways to wear: navy breastfeeding tank and blush blazer, black denim shorts and printed tee, speedy bandouliere and jeans.

Yellow Tees and Navy Floral Kimonos With Balenciaga First Bag

Blue and yellow is a colour combination I really like to wear, so I decided to wear both of these navy floral kimonos with a yellow tee and shorts. A simple yet colourful summer outfit!

What I wore:

Jeanswest Melanie floral kimono and essential v neck tee in elfin yellow olive pull on shorts | awayfromblue

olive shorts and Balenciaga first bag in 2006 Blue India | awayfromtheblue

TeeJeanswest essential v-neck tee in elfin yellow (new purchase)
ShortsJeanswest Tessa olive embroidered shorts
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas
Bag: Balenciaga first bag in 2006 Blue India

Why I wore it:

I picked up the yellow tee and the floral kimono in the Jeanswest buy one get one free sale after Christmas. I was eager to use a gift card I got for Christmas, and since the $80 kimono was reduced to $39.99 I paid for that and got the $30 tee for free! Pretty good deal. The two pieces also go so nicely together I knew I had to wear them together for the first wear!

The navy tassel necklace matched the base of the floral kimono perfectly, and I thought the Balenciaga first bag complimented the colours in the kimono well too. The olive shorts were a comfortable choice and an attempt to introduce even more colour. I really liked this outfit! I've had mixed success in the past with a slouchy tee along with these loose soft shorts, but I think the long line of the duster kimono made this really work.

Nice and colourful outfit for a day spent with my sister checking out a few stores and spending more Christmas gift cards! We picked up some cute Christmas decorations for next year too, and I bought another kimono at Jeanswest.... 😂

Last worn: navy tassel necklace, olive soft shorts, Havaianas. First time I've worn the bag as it was a Christmas present and first time I've worn the yellow tee and floral kimono as they are recent purchases.

Other ways to wearolive soft shorts and stripes.

My Balenciaga Bag Christmas Present:

Shorts: thrifted Emerson white Bermuda denim shorts
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas
Bag: Balenciaga first bag in 2006 Blue India

Why I wore it:

I didn't like this outfit as much as the one above. It's not the first time I've worn yellow with this navy floral kimono, I really liked the combination when I tried it in the past but I wasn't entirely convinced this time. I was going to wear blue denim shorts but changed my mind to these white shorts at the last moment to match the white in the floral print of the kimono. After looking at the photos though I think that blue denim might have been better.

Even the matchy-matchy with the Balenciaga first bag and the turquoise tassel necklace, which I did like, I wasn't 100% happy with this outfit looking at the pics. I don't hate it, it just doesn't look as good as the one above I don't think! Was comfortable for a morning running errands and having friends over in the afternoon though.

Yellow Tees Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

Yellow tees are so fun and cheerful to wear! You can match them to something else you're wearing like I have in the first outfit, with the pastel yellow tee matching the floral print in the kimono, or you can contrast it like the navy florals and the mustard tee in the second outfit.

Blue Printed Dresses With Green Accessories - Rebecca Minkoff Mini 5-Zip Bag

This little green Rebecca Minkoff mini 5 zip bag has been on frequent repeat lately. It was a nice nod to the festive season over December and it's the perfect size for all my essentials when I'm out with the boys. I love how green and blue look together to so thought I'd group 3 of these recent blue dress and green bag outfits together onto one outfit post.

What I wore:

Why I wore it:

First time I've worn this blue printed dress with green and I'm not sure why, I really liked this combination! It was a super hot day so picked this nice light dress, so easy to wear to church. It was just right for wearing to the Christmas fun fair and carol service in the evening too.

I decided not to wear a necklace and tied the tassels into a bow at the neckline instead. I picked some green bracelets to stack with my usual silver ones and match the green mini 5 zip bag. The rose gold sandals were great in the heat and they tied in with the gold zips on the bag nicely too.

DressJeanswest Rachel Lyocell chambray dress
ShoesWittner 'Jasmarie' studded sandals
BagRebecca Minkoff emerald green mini 5-zip rocker bag (get 20% off with code "REAL")

Why I wore it:

I'd planned something else to wear on this day but it was due to hit 38 degrees (100 Fahrenheit ) so I changed my mind and opted for a simple dress instead.

It was a busy morning with a big appointment for my son. I wasn't sure if we would be able to make the special Christmas messy play after it but thankfully the doctor was on time and we were able to quickly drive to the messy play morning. The boys had so much fun and with the extra shade and water play it wasn't too bad in the heat. Even if I did regret wearing this pretty dress a little when the boys got really messy, haha! Thankfully my dress stayed clean even all our legs ended up covered in blue slime! 😂

I really liked the green bag with the chambray dress, and the necklace was a fun way to add even more colour to my outfit. 💚

Last worn: chambray button up dress, Ruby Olive necklace, studded sandals, Rebecca Minkoff mini 5 zip bag (above).

Why I wore it:

This outfit felt very festive! With the navy and blue dress I added my green Rebecca Minkoff mini 5 zip bag again as well as this green and red statement necklace.

While it has 3/4 sleeves, this swing dress is a light viscose material and was perfect for a night out in the city. We took the boys our for dinner and then to the Enchanted Garden at Roma Street parklands. They string up lots of lights through the beautiful gardens there for Christmas and have music and fog...it's so beautiful and very magical to walk through.

Was such a humid night though, I was glad I just picked this light dress to wear!

Blue Summer Dresses Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

Blue and green should definitely be seen! If you're not sure about trying the combination you can do it in a small way by picking a blue dress and adding green accessories. A green bag as a burst of colour like the first outfit is a nice way to ease into trying the colour combination, or you could try wearing two green accessories like I have in the second and third outfits with the green necklaces and bag.

Weekday wear link up: Printed Tanks and Grey Pencil Skirts With Chloe Paddington Bag

My last post and Weekday Wear Linkup for the year. So exciting, I can't believe I've been running the linkup for almost a year (and blogging for 8 years!). Thank you so much to everyone who links up! Hope you have a very happy new year!

For my last week at work before the Christmas break I dressed down a little more than usual. I ditched my usual office staple of a blazer and just wore these plain grey pencil skirts with some striped tanks. I did have a cardigan at my desk to combat the cold office aircon and provide shoulder coverage for meetings, but otherwise these outfits felt pretty dressed down.

Maybe it was the Christmas decorations in the office, the summer heat, the casually dressed shorts wearing teammates or the fact that I had 3 weeks of leave lined up over Christmas and New Years - I just wanted something simple and easy for my last couple of days!

What I wore:

SkirtAtmos&Here grey marle jersey pencil skirt
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs metallic mouse flats
Bracelets: the usual plus Ferragamo double wrap bracelet
BagChloe Paddington in 2007 Brun

Why I wore it:

Felt like this tank was overdue a wear - the red/coral brushstroke stripes seemed a little festive without being overly so and it's such a colourful choice to brighten up this grey jersey pencil skirt a bit. Decided to go very matchy-matchy with the rest of my accessories, using the brown Chloe Paddington bag as my inspiration. The gold mouse flats matched the gold padlock, and the Ferragamo wrap bracelet and the wooden beaded statement necklace both have brown and gold in them.

I really liked this outfit, simple for a hot day in the office!

Last worn: brushstroke stripe tank, wooden statement necklace, jersey pencil skirt, gold mouse flats, Chloe Paddington bag.

Other ways to wearbrushstroke stripe tank and maxi skirtjersey pencil skirt worn 2 ways, gold mouse flats and jeans, Chloe Paddington bag and ruffle dress.

Bracelets: the usual plus gold leaf cuff from my sister's wardrobe
BagChloe Paddington in 2007 Brun

Why I wore it:

This outfit felt even more casual than the first one. This is a pretty casual striped tank, but oh-so comfortable to wear! I paired it with a dressier pencil skirt but still felt very dressed down. As I mentioned above, we usually have a relaxation of the office dress code in the summer heat and with others wearing shorts to work, I didn't feel out of place.

I thought the green necklace was a little festive touch with this! I was going to wear a pair of red earrings as well but decided not to at the last minute. I did add this pretty gold leaf cuff on to my bracelet stack though, a piece my sister no longer wanted but I was happy to pick up! I should have worn it on my other wrist, it didn't sit well with my silver bracelets, but I wasn't sure how it would go on my other arm, my mouse hand. It was a day at the computer tidying up all my tasks and handing things over to others if they couldn't be resolved before I left, and didn't want the cuff getting in the way each time I used the mouse.

Last worn: striped tank, green beaded necklace, grey pencil skirt, black ballet flats, Chloe Paddington bag (above).

Other ways to wearstriped tank and shorts, grey pencil skirt and peplum tank, black ballet flats and floral dress, Chloe Paddington bag and jeans.

Perfect for pregnancystriped tank at 37 weeks, grey pencil skirt in second trimester, black ballet flats in second trimester, Chloe Paddington bag in second trimester.

Striped Tanks Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

A striped tank looks just as good with a pencil skirt as it does with denim! Both of these tanks are worn on my days with the boys and in the office - they are a great double duty piece. If your office doesn't dress down over the Christmas break, or if it's on a more formal side, you can easily throw a blazer over these outfits to make them a little more presentable.

Welcome to the Weekday Wear linkup! A linkup for you to share your weekday outfits - whether that is office wear or stay at home mum wear - if you wore it on a weekday, you can link it up!

Guidelines:
1. Please link to a specific outfit post, not your blog homepage.
2. Link back to this post so others can find the link up.
3. Follow your host Away From The Blue on BloglovinInstagramTwitterFacebook or YouTube.
4. Add up to two posts and be sure to visit and comment on as many other posts as possible to get some weekday outfit inspiration!
Optional: tweet the post you linked up with the hashtag #weekdayWearLinkUp so I can retweet!
