Kimonos In Winter With Skinny Jeans, Grey Tees and Converse

Sticking with the jeans and tee outfit formula that has been on repeat lately - it's perfect for winter days! To mix things up a little, I'm wearing some slightly different colour schemes with grey tees, red (and burgundy) jeans, and then some very different kimonos to suit the different temperatures that week!

What I wore:

Jacket: Jeanswest Melanie floral kimono
Necklace: Target silver Alisha trinity pendant necklace
Top: thrifted Cotton on grey tunic tee
Jeans: thrifted Emerson red skinny jeans
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in black
BagRebecca Minkoff MAB Camera Bag in almond

Why I wore it:

I was glad it was a warm day to give me another chance to wear this duster kimono - I picked it up in the January sales and while it was a complete impulse buy I've been liking how easy it's been to integrate into my wardrobe. I've used the colours in the prints to match it to yellow and a different shade of red before, I knew it would make a great matchy-matchy combo with these red skinny jeans.

Like the skinny jeans that were a thrift find, this grey tunic was another opshop find. And since I got it in a "fill a bag for $5" sale it works out to about 63 cents! With the bright jeans and the printed kimono I thought a nice neutral grey tee was a great piece to wear in between and I was hoping the thrifted pieces would bring me luck at the opshop! I really liked the silver necklace with this outfit too, even if the hardware on the Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag is gold.

After the school drop off the little one and I headed out to our recently reopened opshop. There were a few new rules, such as using hand sanitiser and wearing the provided gloves, but it's a small store so actual social distancing was tricky! I bought a couple of things - a book for myself and some DVDs and a PJ masks playset for the kids. I didn't get a chance to look at much else as my son was fairly insistent that we had to pay for the toy and take it home right away so he could play with it 😂 It is missing a few pieces based on what I can find online but it was just $2 so I wasn't going to say no!

Last worn: floral duster kimono, grey tunic tee, silver necklace, red skinny jeans, Converse, Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag.

Other ways to wearfloral duster kimono and shorts, grey tunic tee and pencil skirt, red skinny jeans and peplum tee, Converse and printed dresses, Rebecca Minkoff MAB camera bag and matching boots.

Perfect for pregnancyConverse in second trimester.

Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC vs MAB Camera Bag

What I wore:

JacketRebecca Minkoff Ruana poncho
Necklace: Colette tortoise shell acrylic disc tassel necklace
TeeAtmos&Here charcoal grey v neck tee
Jeans: Jeanswest Harper skinny pant in Russet
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in black
BagRebecca Minkoff striped coated canvas mini MAC in berry stripe

Why I wore it:

Unlike the kimono above, this was made for winter! Last time I wore it it was much too warm, but when the winter weather arrived again later in the week this was the perfect outfit. I wore this to work from home, and to pop out in the afternoon to pick up some party supplies for my son's upcoming birthday party.

This poncho / kimono is just a big cosy knitted blanket so it was perfect for the cooler evening and so comfortable for working from home. But a more dressed up option than an actual blanket or my usual go-to bathrobe 😂

This darker grey tee is one of my favourites and it was definitely overdue a wear again! With the darker grey I thought these burgundy skinny jeans were a good accompaniment. The woven kimono makes enough of a statement on its own but I couldn't resist adding a couple extra prints with the striped Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC bag and the tortoiseshell necklace.

The only downside to this outfit was that I kept getting the kimono caught on things all day!

How You Can Wear It:

Kimonos are fun ways to add more interest to a plain shorts and tee outfit. While a longer sleeved duster kimono might work on a warmer winter day, a cosy knitted version comes in helpful on the colder days!

22 Ways To Wear A Grey Tee: Weekday Wear Link Up

For today's Weekday Wear Linkup I'm sharing a bright and colourful outfit I wore to work from home, and sadly the last wearing of this grey tee, so I'm looking back at the 22 wears I managed to get from it!

What I wore:

work from home colourful style with magenta skinny jeans grey tee and floral navy kimono | awayfromblue

awayfromblue Instagram | navy floral cocoon blanket kimono with grey tee magenta skinny jeans
JacketCotton On 'Gemma' cocoon kimono in Laos blossom navy print
Necklace: Uniquely Made with Love Sea Change necklace
Tee: Atmos&Here grey v-neck tee with rolled sleeves
PantsSass & Bide The Winning Day Lovestate Jeans in magenta
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas

Why I wore it:

I adore this tee - so much so that I bought it in three colours! I have a burgundy one, this grey one and a black one. The black one has already left my wardrobe, I was hoping to get this grey tee to 30 wears but this last wear just confirmed to me it's stretched out just like the other black tee, sadly!

The super soft and stretchy fabric has elastane in it, which while making it very soft also doesn't survive a lot of heavy duty washes (and during breastfeeding a while ago I had to wash everything at 60℃, breastfeeding mums will know the pain!). This tee was frequently worn then but seemed to be coping much better than the black one and keeping its shape well. Until I realised I was constantly tugging and pulling at it all day, even though I wasn't doing anything too adventurous and just working from home. I'm sad it's left my wardrobe after just 22 wears, but it did last longer than the black version and it was my own fault not caring for it properly!

Issues with the tee aside, I really liked this outfit! In the cooler morning and with a video call booked in for work, I swapped my usual stay at home loungewear for this slouchy tee and the colourful but cosy floral kimono. I love how the navy with the pink flowers went with the magenta skinny jeans!

Last worn: floral kimono, beaded necklace, grey tee, Havaianas, Sass and Bide magenta skinny jeans.

Other ways to wearfloral kimono and maxi dress, grey tee and maxi skirt, Sass and Bide magenta skinny jeans and blazer.

Perfect for pregnancyfloral kimono at 39 weeks, grey tee in second trimester.

22 Ways To Wear A Grey Tee

Much like the time I showed you 30 ways to wear a (different) grey tee, I wear this a lot with denim! I was hoping to hit 30 wears with this tee but it was just too annoying to wear - I like comfortable clothes, I don't like to be pulling or fussing with what I wear! I also don't like worrying about the neckline creeping down when I'm on a work call!

I got it on sale for $17.46 from The Iconic, back in 2014 when I could never resist an Atmos & Here sale at The Iconic! It's definitely my most worn of the three colours I have this tee in, even though it didn't hit my goal of getting worn 30 times. It works out to 79 cents a wear, which isn't too bad, but I really wish I'd got more wears from it!

Here are some of the ways I styled it over the years:

Grey Tee and Blue Denim

5 ways to wear a grey tee and blue denim | awayfromtheblue

The most classic outfit you can ever have - a grey tee and blue denim. Shorts jeans, a grey tee works in all seasons. And you can always add a necklace, bag or kimono (or all three!) for a little extra colour.

Grey Tee in Monochrome Outfit

3 grey tee monochrome outfit ideas | away from blue

Such a simple way to wear a grey tee - just add something black like a skirt or jeans, and you have an easy monochrome outfit. Adding a bright necklace or bag is a good way to introduce a colour pop if you don't want to stick to just black and white.

Grey Tee and Colourful Pants

5 ways to wear a grey tee and colourful pants | awayfromtheblue

Of course it's not just blue jeans a grey tee works with! I liked wearing this grey tee with my more colourful jeans and pants, the neutral goes with any colour.

Grey Tee and Print Mixing

3 print mixing outfit ideas with a grey tee | away from blue
Taking advantage of this neutral grey tee as the base of an outfit, it lets me add in brightly coloured scarves and even a little bit of print mixing! From the subtle striped cardigan and leopard scarf, or the bolder chevron jeans and magenta skull scarf, the grey tee is a great backdrop for a mix of prints.

Grey Tee and Maxis

grey tees and maxi skirt 6 mum style outfit ideas | away from the blue

A grey tee is as much of a staple in my wardrobe as maxi skirts. It's an easy outfit for a warmer day, this grey tee goes with any colour or print of skirt. I've even layered it over a blue maxi dress before too, as you can see at the bottom there.

How Things Have changed (And What I've been Buying!) : Isolation and Working From Home With Kids

With the schools closed, working from home and parenting and teaching a 4 and 5 year old, things are a lot different now than they were at the start of the year! If you're coming to my blog just for an escape I apologise for how much this post discusses the impacts of the coronavirus! I am trying to keep it outfit focused and make this my regular break into fashion and frivolity, but the truth is the virus has impacted life so much.

I'm sharing two outfits I wore back when I was working from home while the schools were open, so I did the school run. It was a crazy week with a lot of unknowns in Australia about if and how school would continue, so I wanted to be comfortable and wear things to try cheer me up a little as I worked from home and counted down the hours until I could pick my boys up!

Also thought I'd share with you what I've been buying lately. Definitely no fashion spending - aside from the two things I mentioned in this post - but a lot of things to prepare for home isolation with kids. We are in a new world where I have to ensure my kids are learning at home every day as well as working from home myself 3 days a week. I'm blessed to still have my job, but the juggle is hard!

What I wore:

Tee: Life Church Online "Come change the world with me at Church Online" tee
Skirtthrifted Billabong 'Don't Think Of It' bikini red printed maxi skirt
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas
BagBalenciaga first bag in 2006 Blue India

Why I wore it:

For over 9 years now I've been volunteering at Life Church Online. We have a great group in Brisbane that meets up to stream the service together, and every Sunday night I hop online to help at another one of those services. With the news about churches needing to close, and understandably no more Brisbane catch ups, I wanted to wear my Church Online tee. Faith over fear I guess! And a reminder to myself that no matter what is happening in the world, some things like God's love and my regular Sunday online services, stay the same!

Wore my red maxi skirt with this as it was a bit of a cooler day and this felt more comfortable than jeans for working at home during the day. It, along with the turquoise Balenciaga first bag, were easy ways to add more colour to the black and white tee too.

Last worn: red maxi skirt, Balenciaga first bag, Havaianas. First time I've worn the church online tee on the blog.

Other ways to wearred maxi skirt and scarf, Balenciaga first bag and pencil skirt.

What I've Been Buying For Home Isolation:

I've been buying a lot lately. I'm an emotional shopper and while I'm not splurging on fashion items or stockpiling food, I'm thinking about what could be 6 months at home and how we will amuse and teach the kids in these times. We don't often do screen time, just a weekly family movie night and maybe a Daniel Tiger or Bluey episode once during the week, so I have been looking for things other than apps. As a bonus, most of the items I'm sharing are from local Aussie mum owned businesses, so your purchase helps their family as it entertains your own!

Little Birdie Books

Fun book boxes with activity and game ideas (and all the materials you need!) based on the books in the box. You can buy one off book boxes or subscribe to get a steady stream of books and activities. Started by two Aussie mums and speech pathologists, the books and activities are aimed at helping your kids develop essential skills. You can see what I got in a previous box in my YouTube review. I learnt about this company after friending one of the founders on Instagram.

Keeping Kids Busy

This company had been on my radar for a while - a local Aussie mum takes all the guesswork out of travel (or isolation!) by packing a bag filled with activities to keep any age kid entertained. Low mess but high fun bags. My boys got these as bumper "party bags" from my parents after we had to cancel my son's birthday party when the government social distancing restrictions came into place. The things in the bags are still being played with now, just today even. Found this company through a Facebook group, and you can get 15% off this weekend with code EASTER15!

Kids Craft Box

Another Aussie mum owned business, based in WA, who ships a box of crafting materials and activities across the nation, with different themed boxes available. She has special discounts on her Instagram page often, and has a sibling box option to reduce costs which is what I bought for the boys. I "met" this lovely lady through YouTube a couple of years ago.

Messy Play Kits

My kids have been going to these messy play sessions since they were tiny, and now you can order a box of messy play activities to entertain the kids at home! Janelle is a local Aussie mum who is diversifying her business and offering do it yourself packs instead of hosting the big parties she usually does. I'm so glad to have connected with her through playgroup, we have tried a few of her activities we've seen at the sessions at home too over the years!

Activity Books

From anywhere I can find them in stock! Think sticker books, Easter themes, puzzle books and educational workbooks or wipe-clean books. Kmart had a good range but I know stock is really low at the moment.

Printables

There are a few educational sites around with freebies at the moment due to the virus, where you just print the activity pages you think would be helpful for your kids. Some are even created by teachers, for teachers. You could also ask your child's teacher for some ideas if they haven't already provided some. Queensland Education department has a good list of sites too.

There are no affiliate links in these product suggestions and this post was not sponsored in any way. I'm just trying to be supportive and share a list that's useful for a parent if they find that like me, all my time is filled with working, playing with the kids, or worrying about what activities to do with the kids next. I've been visiting fashion blogs less as a result of trying to come up with a learn at home plan for the kids but I'm trying to continue my two posts a week goal here.

Also, if you're an Australian parent, Triple P Parenting (Positive Parenting Program) is now free and has a helpful module, guide and tips for parenting during COVID-19.

What I wore:

TeeLife Church Online "Go online reach the world" graphic tee
Skirt: Jeanswest Luxe jersey maxi skirt
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas
BagBalenciaga first bag in 2006 Blue India

Why I wore it:

A very similar outfit to the one above, another Church Online tee with a maxi skirt. I like the "go online, reach the world" message on this one as it's so true! And I'm so glad for the internet at a time like this, and technology to keep in touch with all my family despite the travel restrictions.

Stuck with the same bright Balenciaga first bag as I thought the grey tee and black maxi skirt needed a little extra colour, even with the yellow print on the tee. It was clear this would be my kids last day at school and kindy for a while, so that was bittersweet when I picked them up at the end of my work from home day.

Last worn: black drawstring maxi skirt, Havaianas (above), Balenciaga first bag (above).

Other ways to wearblack drawstring maxi skirt worn two ways, Balenciaga first bag and shorts.

How You can Wear It:

A graphic tee is a simple outfit choice with a maxi skirt - and so incredibly comfortable for working from home, while being presentable enough for any video calls!

It will be a very different Easter break but no matter what you are wearing: stay safe, wash your hands and stay home as much as you can as you watch your church Easter service online.

Weekday Wear Linkup: Wrap Tops and Pencil Skirts With Balenciaga Day Bags

For today's weekday wear I'm wearing some wrap tops that haven't been worn in a while with pencil skirts and statement necklaces for an easy office outfit.

What I wore:

ShoesWalnut Melbourne Ava white leopard ballet flats
BagBalenciaga giant hardware Day bag in 2009 tempete

Why I wore it:

It's not the first time I've worn this navy wrap top with a grey pencil skirt, I really like navy and grey together! To change it up a little I added some different accessories. This green and red beaded statement necklace is a firm fave and while I do wear it at other times through the year it seems so perfectly festive for December, being so close to Christmas! I wasn't sure if the leopard print flats would be too much with this given the necklace was already enough of a statement, but I ended up really liking it when I tried it.

The tempete Balenciaga day bag is the perfect mix of blue and grey so seemed like the obvious choice to wear with this 💙

Last worn: navy wrap top, green and red necklace, grey jersey pencil skirt, leopard print flats, Balenciaga tempete day bag.

Other ways to wearnavy wrap top and maxi skirt, grey jersey pencil skirt worn two ways, leopard print flats and jeans, Balenciaga tempete day bag and floral dress.

Why I wore it:

Followed the same blue and grey colour scheme as the first outfit for this one, just with a single brighter colour in my accessories. I thought the basic grey wrap top was a nice neutral to pair with the jacquard pencil skirt and I really like the way the magenta pops against it!

This recently thrifted necklace was one I couldn't pass by in the opshop when I was in looking for Christmas books for our advent calendar. I knew it would be the perfect match with this magenta Balenciaga day bag and I love the way they look together!

Last worn: grey wrap top, jacquard pencil skirt, silver ballet flats, Balenciaga magenta day bag. First time I've worn the necklace as it was a recent purchase.

Wrap Tops Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

A simple wrap top is a nice twist on a basic and works well in the office when you need to be a little more dressed up. They are great with pencil skirts! I bought both of these wrap tops for easy breastfeeding as they have a snap to hold them in place. It makes them simple to wear at work as they don't gape open. You could always layer a tank underneath if your top doesn't have a modesty snap.

Floral Duster Kimonos and Grey Tees

If you've read my blog for a while you'll know I love kimonos! I like using accessories in my outfit for a little extra touch of colour. Scarves are great in winter, as are necklaces and bags, but in spring and summer I frequently reach for my kimonos. There's something so comfortable about long duster length ones like these floral ones - taking a simple shorts and tee or jeans and tee outfit and making it feel more dressed up!

BagRebecca Minkoff emerald green mini 5-zip rocker bag (get 20% off with code "REAL")

Why I wore it:

The monochromatic grey tee and black skinny jeans outfit was a bit plain, even with the wooden bead necklace. This floral duster kimono added the perfect touch of colour and print and is so comfortable! Of course I couldn't resist going a little matchy-matchy and pairing the green Rebecca Minkoff mini 5-zip bag with this too, even if it does blend into the kimono a bit! They are both such nice shades of green.

Wore this for a morning of furniture shopping which turned into lunch at Ikea, taking advantage of the "kids eat free" deal they had on. Just a nice simple outfit for the challenge that is spending half the day furniture shopping with two little boys!

Why I wore it:

A much less stressful day! We took advantage of the summer-like weather and headed to the local park with my family for a picnic. The heat made me reach for a simple shorts and tee outfit, but I did want to dress it up a little for the picnic so I added this awesome floral duster. It was a Christmas gift from my mum last year and it's a firm favourite!

I thought the purple floral went nicely with the pastel pink shorts too, I like pink and purple together and I've worn a similar outfit before. The tee has a pink panel on the back too, so the sheer kimono showed a little of that pink as well.

Had to wear my big floppy sunhat for sun protection, even though we spent most of the day in the shade at the picnic table. I appreciated the hat while running around with the boys in the playground afterwards!

We had a big bag for the picnic blanket and food but I brought my Louis Vuitton neverfull tote bag along as well so I had extra space to carry everything - sunscreen and water bottles. This is a great go-anywhere tote, and my go-to for picnics!

Last worn: sunhat, statement necklace, floral kimono, grey colour block tee, pink shorts, rose gold sandals, Louis Vuitton neverfull.

30 Ways To Wear: Grey V-Neck Tee

A grey tee is such a staple piece to have in your wardrobe. When I heard about the 30 wears challenge I was sure the first thing I'd be sharing was going to be one of my many grey tees. I was surprised to find none of them were even close to 30 wears! Documenting what I wear each day by taking photos really helps me see what I actually wear all the time, instead of just what I think I wear all the time! I suppose having it be the first top in the series is very fitting - everything else has been accessories, outerwear or shorts or skirts.

This monthly post is inspired by the 30 wears challenge I first heard about in The True Cost documentary.

30 Ways To Wear: Grey V-Neck Tee

30 ways to wear a grey v neck tee affordable outfit ideas | away from blue blog

A grey tee is such a basic wardrobe staple and I am sure you have one in your wardrobe! I'm hoping that this post gives you a new outfit or colour combination to try and encourages you to rewear something you already have. I love repeating my favourite pieces, I bought them to wear them after all!

Cost Per Wear

I purchased this tee from The Iconic sale back in July 2013 and it was reduced to just $13.95 so the cost per wear is just 47 cents as I've worn it 33 times. It shows you don't have to splurge on something to have it last a long time.

I am so sad that I can't buy more of these tees - the brand isn't listed on the Iconic anymore and I haven't been able to find anything on Google. When I realised what a great piece this tee was I went back to buy more but by then there was none left in my size and it was never restocked. It's a 100% cotton, comfortable and soft tee which has held up so well over 6 years (and two pregnancies!) and I expect to have it in my wardrobe for a long time still. I've not found one that compares to it yet!

30 Ways To Wear: Video style

Grey Tee and Kimono

4 ways to wear a grey tee with a kimono away from the blue

Just as grey tees are a wardrobe staple, kimonos are another staple for me! Perfect for stay at home mum wear. With a grey tee and shorts or a grey tee and jeans, your outfit can sometimes feel a little plain, so adding a bright kimono is a great way to add more colour and interest to your outfit.

Grey Tee and Layers

5 outfit ideas ways to wear grey v-neck tee | away from the blue

Sometimes you need a little more than a kimono to keep warm - and a grey tee layers beautifully! As it's a basic, block colour neutral you can pair it with printed scarves, bright cardigans and even denim or leather jackets on colder days. I like how you don't have to worry about the tee clashing with any colours or print you might be layering with.

Grey Tee Over A Dress

3 ways to wear a grey tee knotted over a printed dress | awayfromtheblue blog

I was sure I'd have more examples of this to share as I've been loving knotting things over dresses recently! I like how a simple grey tee worn over a fun printed dress can completely change the look of it. This tee knots beautifully too - it doesn't stretch out after being knotted and it looks great with every style and colour and print of dress as it's a go-with-anything neutral.

Grey Tee In The Office

how to wear a grey tee in the office 3 outfit ideas ways to wear | awayfromblue

If you have a business casual workplace, you might be able to dress up your tee for a day at work. I have a business casual office that's so casual people wear jeans through the week. In this kind of office environment, a grey tee and a pencil skirt is an easy and comfortable outfit to wear. You can always try dressing the tee up a little more with a pair of heels, a blazer, or a big scarf to disguise the casual material.

Grey Tee And Printed Skirts

4 outfit ideas with printed skirt and grey tee | away from the blue blgo

As I've shown above, a neutral tee goes with any print. My favourite pairing is definitely stripes, but I like how easy this tee is to wear with any style of printed skirt. It's such a simple combo, grey tee and maxi skirt, but one I keep wearing over and over. Perfect for mum life.

Everyone relies on a great jeans and tee outfit! It's the best basic outfit and one I frequently wear. Because this tee is a nice neutral grey, you can have a little more fun when picking jeans to wear it with, going bolder with bright jeans or printed jeans to add a little more interest to your outfit. All 5 of these outfits are the same basic tee and jeans formula, but just by changing up the jeans to different colours and prints, maybe adding an accessory like a scarf, you create a new outfit each time.

Classic Jeans and Tee Outfit

Grey Tee In Pregnancy And Postpartum

3 outfit ideas with grey non maternity tee pregnancy and postpartum | awyafromblue

I just had to finish this post with some pregnancy (and postpartum) outfits! I always enjoy looking back at them when I'm compiling these 30 ways to wear posts. After owning this tee 6 years, it's accommodated all the typical weight fluctuations over that time, and two pregnancies (as you can see by it stretched to the max over the third trimester bump there!). It's sprung back into shape every time and was so comfortable to wear over a growing baby bump or slowly shrinking postpartum bump like in the middle photo. Definitely a versatile wardrobe staple!
