What's In My Bag: #ItsInTheBag Christmas Campaign Edition!

A what's in my bag post with a bit of a difference!

You might recall I mentioned a very inspiring and moving talk by Rochelle at the blogger's brunch a few months ago. Rochelle runs Share the Dignity, a charity that aims to provide women across Australia with access to sanitary products.

It's In The Bag is their Christmas campaign. Given my fondness for handbags, I had to share this with you.

What's In My Bag: Share The Dignity It's In The Bag Campaign Christmas 2018 | awayfromblue

Just grab one of your gently used bags you no longer need, or buy a new one, and fill it up to give to a woman or girl at need over Christmas. It's an impactful way you can help women who are homeless, at risk, or experiencing domestic violence. You fill it with new essentials like pads or tampons, other hygiene products, and little (non-food) treats to let a someone in need know they are being thought of at Christmas.

I shared the bag I chose to donate in the video below, along with what I filled it with and why!

The Gabi bag was an obvious choice! As I discussed in the video, it's my kind of bag with multiple ways you can wear it. I love bags you can wear multiple ways! Someone will be thrilled to get this at Christmas. (Checkout the video to see what it looks like worn).

Each of the handbags available for purchase on the site is named after one of the women who have been helped by the campaign. The Gabi bag is named because of a lovely lady who donated to the campaign in 2017. Gabi herself was homeless the year before and had benefited from the campaign, and she wanted to give back the next year.

Gabi's story is so inspiring and shows you that you don't need a large budget, just a large heart to get involved with the campaign.

Ways You Can Help:

  • Why not shop the share the dignity website to find some Christmas gifts? The majority of the bags and clutches are PU faux leather and vegan friendly, and all proceeds help fund the charity programs.
  • Share the campaign with your friends/family.
  • Start putting a bag together of your own to donate. See my tips below.

What Should You Include In Your Handbag Donation?

As well as the items you saw in the video, these are some helpful suggestions for things you could include.

Follow Share the Dignity on facebook for more ideas!

Tips:

  • Start buying now so that you can take advantage of sales and specials on products to make the most of your budget.
  • Try Kmart or eBay for cheap but cheerful accessories, look out for specials on hygiene products at Priceline and don't forget you can pick up some extras with your weekly shop at Coles or Woolworths, both have a good selection of products and often sales.
  • You will be able to drop off your donation between 16th November and 2nd December 2018, so you have plenty of time to get shopping.

Have you donated to #ItsInTheBag before? What did or would you put in your bag?

Note: I was not paid for this post. As always: all thoughts, opinions and images are my own.

What I Bought In August & How I've Worn It: Shopping Haul & Try On Video

After completing no Buy July last month, I was felt like I bought a lot this month to make up for it! Everything was on sale or an opshop find though.

There's a little for everyone here, with new purchases from Jeanswest, opshop (thrift) finds, and awesome accessories. Nothing was over $17, even though I bought a bag too!

What I Bought:

Not Mentioned In The Video:

I will always be upfront on the blog about additions to my wardrobe. I didn't include these in my haul video as I didn't buy them, but I became a brand rep for Fashion Scarf Girl in July and received 4 scarves as a result to wear over the next few months.

Fashion Scarf Girl Brand Rep Away From The Blue

Shopping-wise, this month felt like a month of impulse buys! I wandered into the Jeanswest store just for a browse, and these tees were on sale with an extra 50% off sale prices. I got both for less than the full retail cost of one of them, I'm pretty happy with that! A nice slouchy, basic tee will get a lot of wear in my wardrobe so I couldn't resist getting both colours.

I'm an emotional shopper, so after a bit of a stressful start to the day, I went into Kmart for the containers I planned to buy, and decided to browse. While I didn't buy anything extra that day, I couldn't get these sparkly shoes out of my head (the messages on my Instagram stories telling me to go back for them may have helped there!) and so went back to Kmart again to pick up the shoes and some statement earrings.

After some luck with the green pants at various opshops, I really was hoping to get more for myself in the 'fill a bag with clothes for $2' sale at my favourite opshop (especially as all the proceeds were going to drought-stricken farmers), but as you can see I only ended up with two items of clothing for myself, that pile for the boys you saw in the video and some homewares after I'd been looking out for similar pieces for a while.

The bag was explained a bit further in the video too, but I wanted to try a new style and could not believe that I scored this for under $20! Still not sure how I ended up with that ebay voucher but it came at a perfect time! Its second wear is today so I haven't got the photo for this post unfortunately.

How I've Worn It All:

August purchases and how I've worn them: Away From The Blue

After buying those long sleeved tops at the opshop, the weather started to warm up and I wasn't sure I'd be able to squeeze in two wears of them! Thankfully they work for my business casual office, and it's really cold for my early morning commute so they got some wear that way! Was really pleased to wear everything at least twice, with some surprise pieces like the green skinny jeans being worn a lot more over the month!

What I Bought In June & How I've Worn It: Shopping Haul & Try On Video

Time for an overdue shopping haul video! The last item I ordered in May finally arrived so I thought I'd do a wrap up video with some of my May purchases and my June ones. I felt like I bought a lot, but it was only a handful of pieces - 3 to be exact! You can see my June purchases and the other pieces I bought in May in the video below. Plus, I included some bloopers at the end!

What I Bought:

A month of impulse buys, after last minute browsing of the Rebecca Minkoff sale and just popping into the opshop for a quick look both resulted in buying things.

While I'm a little annoyed that the handbag I bought didn't arrive the same month I bought it, and it wasn't the colour I expected, I absolutely adore it. It was a bargain too, at 50% off! I'll upload a proper review of it on my YouTube channel at some point, but for now I'll just say I love it and I've enjoyed every time I've worn it.

I had been looking at the new Jeanswest winter collection and admiring the yellow knits when I saw this one in the opshop and for just $1 I quickly forgot all about the Jeanswest ones I'd been looking at! While it would be too thin a knit for winter in most other places, it will be perfect for Brisbane. When it gets really cold, I plan to layer a long sleeve tee underneath, which I've done in the past with my open knits to make them more winter appropriate.

The Coca-Cola tee caught my eye to add to my collection of Coca-Cola things. I have so many glass bottles, as well as towels, balls, badges, toy cars, even a Coca-Cola cookbook! While I don't drink it so much now, I still smiled when I saw this tee and just had to snap it up for just $1. I also feel like I've seen something similar in stores lately, with the recent rise in logo tees it's perfectly on trend.

How I Wore It:

June purchases and ways to wear away from the blue blog

I had no troubles finding and thinking of different ways to wear the pieces I got this month - which is a sign that they will hopefully be good additions to my wardrobe. They seem to be so far.

Every month I set myself a goal of wearing everything I buy at least twice in the same month I buy it, to make sure I'm buying pieces I want to wear immediately and can easily think of different ways to wear. As you can see from the pics above, everything was happily worn twice or more.

I'm giving myself a little bit of grace with the Rebecca Minkoff Love bag, as it didn't arrive until a month after I ordered it. I did wear it 3 times in the month after it finally arrived though, so still counting it as meeting my goal.

Update on Yearly Budget:

June is usually a big spending month for me as it's a change of season and I want to stock up on all the fun winter pieces in store. I'm pleased I haven't done much of that and only bought a handful of pieces this year. I'm really focusing on rewearing more of what I already own.

I've definitely spent more in the first six months of 2018 than I did in 2017 though, only because I did 6 months without shopping in the first half of 2017. I'm still less than half way under my total spend from last year so I'm hoping I can stick to that and spend less overall this year than I did last year. Fingers crossed!

I'll be attempting #noBuyJuly18 (just like I've done in previous years) so there shouldn't be any purchases next month to report. Feel free to join me if you want to forgo fashion spending for a month! My tips for surviving 6 months without shopping might come in helpful!

And finally, I was the Featured Fashionista over at Have Clothes, Will Travel so go check it out! You'll find out a little more about me and why I blog.

Layering Tees Over Maxi Dresses With Balenciaga Bags (Plus Updated Handbag Collection Video)

Layering a tee over a maxi dress is a nice way to add just a touch of warmth to your outfit, and to change up the look of a dress you wear frequently. I've been wearing my tees over maxi dresses a lot lately! I've also been wearing my Balenciaga bags often too, and for those who are interested I've shared an updated video of my collection below!

What I wore:

ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs metallic mouse flats
Bracelets: the usual plus Disney Couture Winnie the Pooh bangle
BagBalenciaga envelope clutch in 2012 mangue with giant 12 RGGH

Why I wore it:

Wouldn't change a single thing about this outfit - I loved it all! We went down the coast for a family birthday celebration. It was a warm day but I thought it might get cooler at night, as I picked my denim jacket to layer with. With the blue tee and grey tie dye maxi dress, I thought that this yellow Balenciaga envelope clutch would be a fun pop of colour.

The night didn't go quite how I expected. We were out in the morning and got back late, which meant nap time was late, which meant we were late for heading down the coast, so that we were badly affected by the traffic. I managed to find a rather roundabout route to avoid the traffic and get there in the end though, and even if we didn't get to spend a relaxing afternoon together as planned we did manage to get there in time to enjoy dinner, which was good.

The little gold touches though this outfit worked so nicely together I thought, with the gold mouse flats, heart necklace and bracelet complimenting the Balenciaga envelope clutch. Even if the clutch did stay in the baby bag for most of the night! Mum life 😅

My Complete Balenciaga Handbag Collection

Yes, I have a lot of Balenciaga bags!

Why I wore it:

Another tee over a maxi dress, another Balenciaga bag! As you can see from the video above, I have a lot of Balenciaga bags in my wardrobe. I love this tempete Balenciaga day bag, such a unique colour.

Wore this for a blogger date with Rachel from A Nesting Nomad. Now living in Sydney, she was up in Brisbane for the weekend and we took the opportunity to catch up and go grab a yummy gluten free brownie together. After a bit of a tough week, I was looking forward to a couple of kid free hours, but unexpectedly had to take the boys along with me. I regretted the long dangly earrings with the boys grabbing and tugging at them often. They were quite boisterous too, but Rachel was a sweetheart about it! So very sweet!

I did like this outfit, despite the earrings not being a very kid-friendly choice, as it was good to come up with another way to wear this beautiful summer dress and make it work for cooler weather.

How You Can Wear It:

If you have a tee you love and a maxi dress you love, wear them together! If your tee is cropped it might sit perfectly over your dress, as you can see in the first outfit. If your tee is a little longer, you can knot it like the second outfit to have it sit at just the right point.

Layering a Tee Over A Maxi Dress: Autumn Style (And Brisbane Kite Festival Family Day Out Vlog)

Slightly cooler Autumn weather, after what seemed like a never-ending summer heat, brought me the opportunity to layer a little! I decided to try wearing some of my fave slouchy tees over my jersey maxi dresses. I've only worn a tee over a maxi dress once before, but I loved this combination and you can expect to see it pop up more frequently!

What I wore:

grey tie dye maxi dress with burgundy knotted tee layered over SAHM autumn style | awayfromblue

bracelet stack, Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC in aquamarine with python embossed leather | awayfromtheblue

Shoes:  black slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual plus Roie Designs black leather Swarovski beaded wrap bracelet
BagRebecca Minkoff mini MAC in aquamarine with python embossed leather

Why I wore it:

We had a pretty quiet day planned when I wore this. Taking advantage of hubby having the day off, we took the boys to the doctors for their flu vaccination. It was helpful having another set of hands as injections are never pleasant! After the stressful morning, we took the boys out for lunch as a treat, then it was back home for massive naps from them both.

It's not the first time I've worn the aqua mini MAC bag with burgundy (seen before here with burgundy pants), I really like the combination. The mini MAC bag is worn frequently with this tie dye dress too. Loving all of these pieces separately and combined, I of course loved this outfit. So much that I repeated the formula again a few days later with different pieces as you can see below.

Last worn: burgundy tee, tie dye maxi dress, Havaianas, Rebecca Minkoff aquamarine mini MAC bag.

Other ways to wearburgundy tee and skinny jeans, tie dye maxi dress worn knotted, Rebecca Minkoff aquamarine mini MAC bag and purple jeans.

Family Day Out Vlog: Brisbane Kite Festival

What I wore:

TeeAtmos&Here grey v-neck tee with rolled sleeves (also in black)
DressJeanswest 'Chantelle' crochet detail blue printed maxi dress (worn as skirt)
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagRebecca Minkoff MAB mini in soft grey

Why I wore it:

We took the boys out to the Brisbane Kite Festival for something a little different! It was a lot of fun, as you can see from the video above. There were so many kites for the boys to watch, and we ended up buying and flying our own kite for a little bit too. It was the first time they'd flown a kite, and I don't even know how many years it's been since I flew one.

It was a really windy but sunny day, so I wore the knotted tee over a maxi dress outfit again. It was the perfect layer to act as a physical sunblock on my shoulders too, as I forgot a hat. I think my big sun hat would have flown off a few times if I'd worn it though.

As mentioned in the video, I felt it was time to get my MAM bag out again. Someone had asked a question about it on YouTube so I'd filmed a video for it and didn't want to put it back in its dust bag without giving it a wear!

Last worn: grey v-neck tee, blue printed maxi dress, Rebecca Minkoff MAM.

Other ways to weargrey v-neck tee and printed jeans, blue printed maxi dress and matching bag, Rebecca Minkoff MAM worn 30 ways.

Perfect for pregnancygrey v-neck tee in second trimester, blue printed maxi dress at 39 weeks pregnant, Rebecca Minkoff MAM in third trimester.

Slouchy V-Neck Tees Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

On a slightly cooler day a tee over a maxi dress is a great layering option, as it doesn't make you too warm. If your tee is long and slouchy, knotting it at the side is a great option to make it sit just right. Perfect for late spring or early autumn, it one way you can get more wear from your favourite summer maxi dresses.

What I Wore To a YouTube Creator Day (And To The Office): Printed Tanks And Pencil Skirts

It's taken me a while to share these office outfits, worn back in March! I wanted to wait until I'd edited the video of the Brisbane YouTube Creator day I went to so you could see what I got up to. It was a lot of fun!

What I wore:

what I wore to Youtube Creator Day Brisbane March 2018 office pencil skirt printed tank purple bag | awayfromblue

Balenciaga raisin purple 2009 giant silver G21 hardware work bag | awayfromtheblue

awayfromblue instagram purple Balenciaga work bag boucle blazer printed tank pencils skirt YouTube Creator Day

ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs metallic mouse flats (on sale in black!)
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch C/O JORD
BagBalenciaga raisin purple 2009 giant silver G21 hardware work bag

Why I wore it:

I was so extremely nervous for this day. Excited too, but mostly nervous! I had been talking a lot on Twitter about it, trying to figure out how things would go. My outfit was full of classic pieces picked to make me feel good. I love this boucle jacket and it helps me feel pulled together. The printed tank, a gift from my mum, is quickly becoming a favourite. A pencil skirt as it's a classic office piece. I did consider bringing jeans or maybe another skirt to change into after, but already my bag was pretty full. I'm glad I kept it simple and wore the same outfit to work and the Creator Day.

You can see in the video that my bag is really full! I picked this one as it's a beautiful colour and coming from my bestie's wardrobe, gives me a little boost of confidence. Plus it fit everything I needed so elegantly. Even if I did end up leaving it on the table at the Creator Day and blocking Eve's view a bit! Sorry Eve! She made a great video recapping her experience there.

The Creator Day was so fun! I learned a lot, took tons of notes, and as you can see from the video, had a blast catching up with some of the YouTube friends I've made this year. It's so strange walking into a room and feeling like you know people, even though you've only known them from their YouTube videos! You can see more in the video below.

Last worn: boucle blazer, leaf print tank, black pencil skirt, gold mouse flats, Balenciaga purple work bag.

Other ways to wearboucle blazer and jeans, leaf print tank worn two ways, black pencil skirt and plaid shirt, gold mouse flats and sheath dress, Balenciaga purple work bag and black dress.

Perfect for pregnancyboucle blazer in third trimester, black pencil skirt in first trimester, gold mouse flats in third trimester.

Brisbane YouTube Creator Day March 2018: How To Win On YouTube!

The video goes into more detail about what I wore, what was in my bag, and shows you some of the fun people I met and things I learned!

What I wore:

ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs silver tuxedo flats
Bracelets: the usual plus Cora purpleheart and mother of pearl watch C/O JORD
BagBalenciaga raisin purple 2009 giant silver G21 hardware work bag

Why I wore it:

Despite this outfit following the same outfit formula as the one above, I didn't like it as much. I think the grey pencil skirt and cream blazer didn't look as good together as the black jacket and skirt in the outfit above, I did enjoy wearing this ruffle polka dot print blouse again though! It's been a while between wears. It is strictly a work only piece for me, it feels a bit fancy for stay at home mum days and it's not breastfeeding friendly.

I do like the navy top with the purple Balenciaga work bag though, and I've worn them together before. While I wasn't a fan of all of these pieces together, I like them enough separately so they are all staying in my wardrobe.

Last worn: cream blazer, ruffle print blouse, grey pencil skirt, metallic ballet flats, Balenciaga work bag (above).

Other ways to wear: cream blazer and printed dressruffle print tank and red jeans, grey pencil skirt and floral cami, metallic ballet flats and swing dress, Balenciaga work bag and maxi dress.

Perfect for pregnancy: cream blazer in second trimesterruffle print tank in second trimester, grey pencil skirt in second trimester, metallic flats in third trimester.

More Printed Tanks Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

Printed tanks are a fun addition to an office outfit, especially if paired with more corporate pieces like pencil skirts and blazers. It's a good way to add some colour if your suit separates are neutral, but you don't have to draw the line there. A colourful bag like this purple Balenciaga tote is another way to add something bright and cheerful to your work wardrobe.

Rebecca Minkoff Regan Bag & Tulip Hem Wrap Dresses For The Office

You can't beat a classic wrap dress for easy office style. I love printed dresses as they are instant outfits, with little to no accessorising required. Both of these Atmos&Here dresses have tulip hems. The tulip hem and midi length is something I'd usually worry would make my petite self look even shorter, but I don't feel that with these dresses. I love them both, even when worn with flats.

What I wore:

Why I wore it:

Although I lay my outfit out the night before to make getting ready in the morning faster, I don't always know what accessories I'm going to wear. I was standing in front of the mirror trying to pick a necklace when I saw this turquoise and gold beaded one and realised it would be perfect, and meet the 'matchy matchy' theme for the #AutumnStyleFile challenge on Instagram. Only I got my days mixed up and the challenge for the day was actually 'colour makes me happy'. This dress was still perfect for that theme though with the colourful turquoise print.

With the turquoise dress I thought the navy blue Rebecca Minkoff Regan bag would be a good accessory, and it's such a nice bag for the office with the structured sides.

Why I wore it:

This was my 'I don't know what to wear' outfit solution. The beautiful zig zag print wrap dress always gets compliments. It's the perfect dress to wear as it goes with any colour of accessories, although again I went with the navy Rebecca Minkoff Regan bag.

There was no style challenge this day to help me pick out what necklace to wear like there was with the first outfit, so I went with this pretty gold beaded necklace that my bestie gave me, I thought it tied in nicely with the gold mouse flats.

Whenever I wear these mouse flats they always get a reaction when someone spots them - usually causing a debate over what animal they are meant to be. They are Marc Jacobs mouse flats, the animal is in the name, but someone suggested they look more like wombats. I'm tempted to call them my golden wombat shoes now next time anyone asks about them! 😂

Tulip Hem Wrap Dresses Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

A wrap dress is one of those classic wardrobe 'must-have pieces' I completely agree with and think everyone needs in their wardrobe. They work in pregnancy, although you may need to size up to continue to cover an expanding bump. The turquoise printed wrap dress above is a size larger than normal and I wore it through my third trimester. The wrap style is perfect for breastfeeding post-baby too, flattering on any leftover baby bump and something you know will fit even with all the postpartum body changes! And of course, they work in an office setting. A great all-rounder!

February Purchases and Wearing Things Twice In The Month I Buy Them

This time last year I was doing my #6monthsWithoutShopping challenge. This year, I'm not doing that challenge so I'm free to spend! I continue to have the goal of spending less this year than I did last year though. Even with the freedom to shop I haven't bought much, I've definitely changed my shopaholic habits.

away from the blue blog february shopping haul YouTube video

Just two purchases this month! A long thought out purchase and an impulse buy, but I've worn the impulse buy one the most surprisingly.

Here's what I bought:

How I Wore It

I have my 'wear everything twice in the month you buy it' rule. I started this a few years ago to ensure I was only buying things I could get use from right away, to stop the discovery of unworn with tags items in my wardrobe. There have been a few exceptions to this rule, one when my pregnant belly outgrew something before I got to wear it and the rest have been weather related. As I mentioned in the video, the foil jumper hasn't been worn because of the weather.

The wear twice rule still works though. I did consider buying something else this month but decided against it. Purely because I had to order it online and it wouldn't have made it in time for me to wear it twice in February. It was a 'want' item, not a 'need', but my large wardrobe makes almost every purchase a 'want'! It was easier to refrain from purchasing know it wouldn't pass the wear twice rule. Maybe next month I'll buy it if I keep thinking about it.

two ways to wear distressed denim shorts with kimonos in summer | away from the blue blog

The foil knit, bought a few days before the heatwave, didn't get worn at all this month.  There's a little more detail in the video above, but basically I bought this thinking I might not get to wear it right away, and bought it anyway as I didn't want to miss out on the trend again.

The denim shorts, an impulse buy, have been worn right away as you can see above, as they were perfect for the heatwave.  I know I bought a lot of new shorts for summer a couple of months ago, but when you stumble across $60+ denim in your size in the op-shop, you buy it! While I've worn them similarly here with printed tanks and kimonos, the video has more ways to wear them.

I'm pretty content with my wardrobe now. I might buy that piece I keep thinking about or I might wait until cooler weather to see where the gaps are in my wardrobe!
