Weekday Wear Link Up: Turquoise Tanks With Purple Balenciaga Work Bag and Grey Pencil Skirts

Two incredibly similar outfits to share for today's Weekday Wear Link up! I love a good outfit formula and it's nice to follow the same basic structure for an outfit but change a few details. This time around I stuck with exactly the same formula instead of changing things up - turquoise tanks, grey skirts and my purple Balenciaga work bag. While I did pick different shoes and necklaces, the resulting outfits this time around are very similar, and I loved them both.

What I wore:

ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs silver tuxedo flats
Bracelets: the usual plus purple Salvatore Ferragamo 'Vara' leather bow bracelet
BagBalenciaga raisin purple 2009 giant silver G21 hardware work bag

Why I wore it:

Another wearing of this new Jeanswest turquoise tank. I've worn it with jeans before for a kid's party but it works so well dressed up for the office with a pencil skirt. I picked this tank to wear as it's a longer tunic length, and I needed the extra length (and butt coverage!) for when I swapped my pencil skirt for leggings for my physio session. (After injuring my knee after Christmas I'm looking at regular physio sessions for a long time).

The viscose fabric of this tank creases like crazy, and it didn't look so good after a day of sitting at my desk, but I did like how it dressed up the jersey pencil skirt a little, especially as it was too hot to wear a blazer with this so I just wore a cardigan on top around the office.

I went matchy-matchy again with the accessories, silver shoes and silver necklace which matched the grey pencil skirt nicely, as well as the silver hardware on the purple Balenciaga work bag.

30 Ways To Wear: Balenciaga Purple Work

BagBalenciaga raisin purple 2009 giant silver G21 hardware work bag

Why I wore it:

Since I liked the outfit above so much, I repeated it again with a different turquoise tank. This time around the grey pencil skirt was a more formal material and the tank was more casual. I did consider a blazer for this but it wasn't a meeting heavy day so knew the cardigan at my desk would be fine.

Matchy-matchy with the accessories again, with the black Walnut Melbourne ballet flats and another multi chain necklace, a black one this time. This is an oldie I found when setting up my new wardrobe, but it really annoyed me when I wore it this time so it's been donated. Kept wearing the purple Balenciaga work bag as it looks so good with turquoise.

Turquoise and purple is a fun and colourful combo. You can balance out the bright pairing with neutral pieces like these grey pencil skirts, and you can tone it down more by adding a neutral cardigan or blazer on top.

Colourful Outfits To Match Printed Kimonos

Even a glance at my blog or Instagram will tell you I love kimonos! With warm temperatures most of the year here in Brisbane they have become a wardrobe staple for me and are a great way to add a little more colour and interest to an outfit.

This time around I picked the kimonos I wanted to wear and created outfits based on the colours from the kimonos. It was a fun way to wear some of my recently purchased pieces!

What I wore:

Jeanswest Melanie floral kimono with Vickie turquoise tank and russet skinny jeans regan cross body bag | awayfromblue

Rebecca Minkoff Avery crossbody bag in burgundy | awayfromtheblue

awayfromblue | Jeanswest mum style outfit melanie floral kimono vickie button tank harper russet skinny pant burgundy turquoise

Necklace: Lovisa blue leaf long necklace
TankJeanswest Vickie button back tank in enamel blue (new purchase)
JeansJeanswest Harper skinny pant in Russet (new purchase)
Shoesslim navy and pink Havaianas
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff Avery crossbody bag in burgundy

Why I wore it:

This is a very Jeanswest heavy outfit! The kimono, tank and jeans are all Jeanswest. As I explained with my post Christmas sale haul, my go-to store Jeanswest has gone into administration. Rather than spending all my Christmas gift cards through the year as usual, I spent all of them in one month in January, in case things change with the store possible closing, and they wouldn't be honoured later.

When I looked at what I'd bought I realised how well it all worked together, so I took the chance on that one day when we had slightly cooler temps with all the rain and it was under 30 degrees Celsius to wear my new jeans. Bit of a big day, with swimming lessons, almost being trapped in floodwaters, and a joint birthday party to attend. The humidity increased through the day too so I wasn't entirely happy with my choice to wear jeans instead of shorts, but I did love the outfit in the cooler morning! Even if the turquoise tank quickly creased like crazy!

My new jeans go so well with this burgundy Rebecca Minkoff Avery crossbody bag that my sister got me for Christmas, I just had to wear them together to continue the matchy-matchy with them both and the tank matching the tropical print on the kimono.

Last worn: tropical floral kimono, leaf necklace, Havaianas. First time I've worn the rust jeans and turquoise tank as they are recent purchases, and first time I've worn the Regan crossbody bag as it was a Christmas gift.

Other ways to weartropical floral kimono and olive shorts.

Shorts: thrifted pastel pink cotton shorts

Bracelets: the usual plus Roie Designs black leather Swarovski beaded wrap bracelet

Why I wore it:

While this outfit copies the same formula as the outfit above, picking clothes and a bag to wear that match the floral print of the kimono, the outfit looks very different as this kimono has a different set of colours. Still just as easy to pull together as the first outfit though. I liked the pastel combination of the lilac tank with the blush shorts and this $1 sheer floral kimono from the opshop was a great buy!

I added the New Balance sneakers as we had a big day out planned and I knew my knee would need some extra support. (I injured it after Christmas and it's going to take months to heal). Took the kids into the city to visit the Water exhibition at GOMA. It was really interactive and they enjoyed it. The Riverbed installation was an actual river flowing through the gallery and a lot of rocks and gravel which was very difficult to walk on for me, definitely overdid it a bit!

It was a fun day out though, knee pain aside. After we'd been to the gallery we met hubby for lunch as he was working in the city.

Last worn: lilac tee, pearl tassel necklace, pink shorts, New Balance sneakers, purple Rebecca Minkoff MAB bag. First time I've worn the sheer floral kimono as it's a recent purchase.

Floral Kimonos Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

A fun floral kimono has so many possible outfits you can wear with it - shorts and a tee is a summer staple of course, but you can mix it up each time you wear it by picking clothes to wear that match the colours in the print. It creates a completely different outfit each time, even though you are following the same outfit formula and is so quick to pull together, very mum friendly!

30 Ways To Wear: Navy Printed Kimono | #30wears Challenge

Another kimono for this months 30 wears post! Surprisingly it's only the second time I've featured a kimono for one of these posts, despite wearing kimonos frequently. I think it's because I have so many it takes me a while to build up 30 wears on one of them.

Every month I look back through my blog archives and find something I've worn 30 times or more to create these posts. One of the benefits of photographing and blogging what I wear each day for over 8 years, it's easy to see how often things are worn!

30 Ways To Wear: Navy Printed Kimono

30 Ways To Wear a Navy Printed Kimono: Outfit Ideas | Away From The Blue blog

I bought this kimono from ASOS, on sale when I was pregnant with my youngest boy at the end of 2015. It has been worn a lot, which surprises me to see that it's taken a little over 4 years to get to 30 wears with it. I think it's just because I have so many kimonos as I said above.

Cost Per Wear

I paid $22 for this kimono on sale, so at 30 wears that's 73 cents a wear, which is really good! This kimono still looks new too, it hasn't faded or worn. I'm really happy with it, and it will of course be staying in my wardrobe to be worn even more.

So here are the ways I've worn it, and some outfit ideas and colour combinations you can try.

Navy Kimono With Denim

6 outfit ideas with navy printed kimono and denim spring and summer | awayfromblue

Of course the outfit formula you'll see me wearing the most is a kimono and denim. There's something about a casual kimono that makes it the best topper for a denim outfit - whether it's skinny jeans or denim shorts! I like adding a kimono when I've got some denim in my outfit.

Printed Kimono With Dresses

3 ways to wear navy kimono and dresses | awayfromtheblue

There are other things that look great with kimonos! I like adding them to dresses - from a shorter chambray dress in the middle there to the two black maxi dresses, I think kimonos are perfect with any length of dress. They are a nice way to cover up your shoulders as well when wearing a sleeveless dress, for sun protection or a little extra warmth.

Navy Kimono With Skirts

3 outfit ideas styling a navy printed kimono with skirts | away from the blue

Just like the dresses above, you'll find that a kimono works well with any length of skirt! I like the slouchy relaxed look it gives when worn with a maxi skirt, and it's a nice way to dress down a pencil skirt a little more too when you are wearing it outside of the office as I am in the first and third outfits here.

Some Colour Combinations To Try With a Navy Kimono:

Blue Kimono Worn With Black

colour combination outfit ideas with navy kimono and black | away from the blue

I really like black and blue together! With the addition of the navy printed kimono, these basic black tank and denim outfits are a little bit more colourful and interesting.

Navy Kimono With Red

3 ways to wear a navy printed kimono with red pieces | 30wears awayfromtheblue

Red and blue are a fun and colourful combination - you can try a basic red tee under a kimono, or a bolder outfit with a pair of red skinny jeans like I have in the middle there. Any amount of red looks good with navy.

Blue Printed Kimono With Pink Accessories

5 outfit ideas with a navy blue kimono and pink accessories | awayfromblue blog

Pink and blue are so good together! This set of outfit ideas shows you a great way to try a new colour combo - you can take it small and simple by wearing a pink accessory with a blue kimono. Could be a statement necklace like in the middle, or a bit bigger and bolder with a pink bag. You can see I really like wearing my neon pink mini MAC with this kimono!

Navy Kimono Worn With Green

colourful outfit combinations navy printed kimono with green | away from blue

While I used to avoid wearing blue and green together, when I tried the combo I realised that blue and green really should be seen! No matter what the old fashion "rule" says. This neutral navy kimono works well with every shade of green.

Blue Printed Kimono In Pregnancy

navy printed kimono in pregnancy with baby bump awayfromtheblue blog

Much like accessories, kimonos are the best as they work in all trimesters of pregnancy! I loved being able to feel like myself by wearing a favourite kimono no matter how big my belly grew. It's always fun looking back at the bump pics when I'm putting these posts together too. You don't need to splurge on a maternity kimono - as you never button it up any kimono works well with a baby belly!

Peplum Tanks and Textured Pencil Skirts With Rebecca Minkoff Regan Bag | Weekday Wear Link Up!

Keeping it simple on super humid summer days at work with peplum tanks and textured pencil skirts. It's not the first time I've worn my peplum tanks with pencil skirts, I like the fun silhouette it creates while still being formal for work (especially if you throw a blazer over the top). No blazer on these days though, the summer heat and humidity were too much! I did cover up my shoulders with a cardigan in the cold office aricon.

What I wore:

black peplum tank with blush pink polka dot pencil skirt and Rebecca Minkoff Regan satchel | away from blue

Necklace: Colette crescent purple and gold necklace
Tank: Zalora basics ruffle hem tank in black
SkirtCotton On 'Mica' mesh spot skirt in dusty pink
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs metallic mouse flats
BagRebecca Minkoff Regan Satchel Tote in moon

Why I wore it:

While it’s the first time I’ve worn this peplum tank and pencil skirt together, I have worn other peplum tank with this pencil skirt. I really like the combination with the longer skirt and the peplum tank, especially as the black of the tank matches the textured dots on the skirt for a nice bit of matchy-matchy.

The crescent necklace added a little extra colour to my outfit, as did the navy Rebecca Minkoff Regan bag. I like black and navy together and this is a great bag for work. I picked the gold mouse flats to be a little matchy-matchy again with the necklace, and because they are so cute!

Last worn: black peplum tank, polka dot pencil skirt, gold mouse flats, Rebecca Minkoff Regan bag. First time I've shared the necklace on the blog as it was a Christmas present.

Tank: Kmart black sleeveless frill hem peplum tank
SkirtWarehouse navy jacquard pencil skirt
ShoesWalnut Melbourne 'Ava' black lizard ballet flats

Why I wore it:

This was a great outfit but a bit of an accessory fail! I'd picked out this tank to wear as it was longer to cover up a bit when I swapped the jacquard pencil skirt for leggings to go to my lunch time physio session. (After I injured my knee at the end of the year, I'm looking at frequent physio appointments). It was a little too short so I ended up wearing my office cardigan over the tank and leggings when I went out at lunch time.

I really liked the earrings with this, it's the first time I've worn these gold bar earrings and I thought they went nicely with the black peplum tank. I wasn't sure on what necklace to wear when I was planning this outfit the night before so decided to pick in the morning. This tortoiseshell circle pendant with the black tassel was a nice mix of print to have with the jacquard skirt and the gold chain matched the gold earrings nicely too. I didn't realise until after I looked at the photos that the black tassel on the necklace doesn't really show up very well against the black tank though! It was a bit more noticeable in person.

As much as I liked this outfit, I could have made it look better in pictures if I'd picked a different necklace! You can see all the prettiness of the necklace better last time I wore it.

Black Peplum Tanks Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

A peplum hem on a tank is a fun twist on a wardrobe basic. With an extra layer on top to cover your shoulders if you work in a more formal environment, it's a great choice for the office when worn with a pencil skirt I like I've shown here. You can even match the colour of the tank to one of the colours in your pencil skirt too.

What I Bought in December And January, And How I've Worn It

Well 2020 has been off to a strange start! And not just because of all the wild events recently, I'm talking specifically about my shopping. This is a personal style blog after all!

I started the new year with my intention, the same as last year, to spend less than I did the previous year. Yet at the end of January, I've bought a lot more than expected! I actually only have 1 Christmas gift card left! A few impulse buys and a few fear-driven purchases. I covered it all in the video below with a quick summary you can read through too.

What I Bought:

Why I Bought It:

Now my favourite store (Jeanswest) is in administration and closing stores I wanted to spend the last of my Christmas gift cards ASAP. They can change the terms and conditions with the gift cards when a chain is in administration and that has happened with other stores that have closed here in Australia, from requiring you to spend a set amount before you can use a gift card to just refusing to accept them.

I tried to shop sensibly and buy basics I can wear over and over, and I'm pleased with what I got but also it wasn't anything I really felt I needed. Although to be honest with a wardrobe the size of mine, there's nothing that's really a need! So pleased I got some cute things with the Christmas gifts I was given, and that I got to spend them before the rules around using gift cards possibly changes. Really hoping that Jeanswest doesn't shut down completely though - where else would I do the majority of my clothes shopping!?

How I've Worn It:

waht I've bought and how I've worn it: wardrobe remix with january Jeanswest sale finds

I have a rule that every time I want to buy something I have to think of two different ways I will immediately wear it that month. I didn't do too badly with this goal this month at all....the opshopped jacket doesn't suit the weather at all and so hasn't been worn, but I wasn't going to pass on a jacket for just $1! I bought more than I needed to this month for sure, usually I spread my gifts cards through the year but I was focused on spending all my Jeanswest ones this month. I did enjoy wearing everything and did quite well with the goal, but also didn't get to my twice a wear figure with the jeans and the jacket as they aren't suited for summer temps.

For the upcoming months...I'm either going to spend a fortune at the Jeanswest closing down sales or the closure of one of the stores I frequently shop in will help me meet my spend less target this year!

Maxi Dresses And Balenciaga First Bag

Again with this blue India Balenciaga first bag! I've been enjoying wearing it so much lately! Decided to wear it with two different shades of blue with two pretty printed maxi dresses.

What I wore:

Jeanswest navy geometric print maxi dress with purple accessories and Balenciaga first bag | awayfromblue

DressJeanswest 'Chantelle' crochet detail blue printed maxi dress
ShoesNovo Tawny rose gold sandals
Bracelets: the usual plus Roie Designs howlite tassel bracelet and lilac beaded bracelet
BagBalenciaga first bag in 2006 Blue India

Why I wore it:

I love the deep turquoisey-teal of this Balenciaga first bag and wanted to wear it with more blue - this navy printed maxi skirt was the perfect pairing. For another touch of colour I added a little bit of purple with the accessories - the beaded bracelets and the marble necklace. The gold and teal earrings kind of matched the bag and the rose gold sandals were the perfect matching shoe choice.

Wore this for a quiet Saturday, with swimming lessons and then lunch at my parents on the coast. My mum got out a bunch of old toys we had as kids, and it was a trip down memory lane and fun seeing my boys playing with them!

Last worn: navy printed maxi dress, marble necklace, rose gold sandals, Balenciaga blue India first bag. First time I've worn the earrings as they were a Christmas present.

Other ways to wearnavy printed maxi dress layered with a tee, rose gold sandals and shorts, Balenciaga blue India first bag and kimono.

Bracelets: the usual plus Roie Designs hematite and red beaded bracelet stack
BagBalenciaga first bag in 2006 Blue India

Why I wore it:

My mum bought me this dress from Kmart just before Christmas and I decided to keep it as my Christmas day dress! I was eager to wear it again so I figured wearing it to church would be a good idea. I wasn't too sure about the Balenciaga first bag against the teal of the dress and kept trying the two together the day before. I decided to wear it anyway. I've matched my bags to my shoes, necklaces, scarves and jeans before so why not try matching to my maxi dress! Not sure I would try the combination again but it was fun to try! I added a few more bracelets to my bracelet stack too to match the print in the dress.

The first time I wore this dress I didn't belt it. This time around as it was a wet weekend I decided to try belting it ever so slightly, to keep the hem off the ground and away from any rain. Luckily I managed to get these photos before the rain started. It was nice for us to have some rain around with the drought and all the bushfires lately, it's been very welcome.

How You Can Wear It:

A printed maxi dress is an easy instant outfit. For something a little fun you can add more colour with your accessories. It could be as simple as bracelets that match the colours in the print, or adding a bright pop of colour with a completely different shade of bag like in the first outfit.

Weekday Wear Link Up - Printed Tanks and Black Pencil Skirts With Balenciaga First Bag

For this week's Weekday Wear Linkup (and what was my first week back at work after the Christmas break) I needed something simple so I stuck with my trusty black pencil skirts and some printed tanks. The tanks were long overdue a wear! When I setup my new wardrobe I got rid of a few blouses I hadn't worn in a long time but these two made the cut to stay in my wardrobe!

What I wore:

SkirtJeanswest black ponte pencil skirt
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs suede flats in red

Why I wore it:

I was so sure this was a complete outfit repeat but I wore it anyway! I love the red ballet flats as a bit of matchy-matchy with the red print on the navy tank so I wanted to wear them together again. With the hearts and the ruffles on the tank, it's a very cute piece, but manages to look perfectly professional for the office with a pencil skirt. I did have a cardigan at my desk to cover up my shoulders with at meetings and also for when the office aircon got too cold!

The turquoise Balenciaga first bag was a fun addition and another shade of blue for the outfit and I was happy to continue wearing it - it has been on heavy repeat after I unwrapped it on Christmas day!

Other ways to wearnavy ruffle tank and blazer, black pencil skirt in winter, red suede flats and jeans, Balenciaga first bag with shorts.

Why I wore it:

A little bit of print mixing and a little bit of matchy matchy - this simple outfit has a bit of everything! I like wearing this dachshund print tank with purple as the little dogs have a faint purple outline, but I thought blue would be nice to try with it for a change and I thought this blue Swarovski heart necklace matched the turquoise Balenciaga blue India first bag nicely.

The shoes were another attempt to try something different with this tank - I picked my leopard print ballet flats for a print mix. Being black and white they seemed like a good touch with the black and white outfit and it let the blue accessories shine. I actually really liked this combination!

A fun printed tank is an easy outfit choice for the office with a classic black pencil skirt. You can match the colour in the print to something else in your outfit, or pick a different colour for your accessories like I have in the second outfit for a bit of a pop.
