Peplum Tanks, Kimonos and Denim Shorts: Summer Mum Style

I've been wearing peplum tanks with pencil skirts frequently recently, so I thought it was time to try something different and pair them with some denim shorts. Like scarves in winter, kimonos are a fun topper to an outfit to add a little extra colour and interest.

Why I wore it:

After getting badly sunburned a couple days before, I needed a light outfit that provided sun protection for a quick trip out with the boys to run essential errands and pickup some groceries. This black peplum tank is so soft and just what my sore shoulders needed. It's a shame that the peplum hem of this tank doesn't show up well in the photos as I thought it looked really cute! I was grateful for the kimono adding a little extra colour and print to the outfit as it also offered some good sun protection for my tender shoulders.

I've recently worn this purple Rebecca Minkoff mini MAB tote bag with the blue printed kimono before - since I liked the combination I thought I'd wear it again, just swapping the white tee for this black tank and a different necklace. I also appreciated the thin cross body strap on the bag being easy to wear without aggravating my sunburned neck and shoulders!

Simple, fuss-free outfit for a hot day.

Why I wore it:

Despite not having sunburn to contend with when I wore this, it's a very similar outfit to the one above. Longer shorts and longer tank, but still just denim shorts, peplum tank and a fun blue printed kimono with a colourful pink Rebecca Minkoff bag this time.

I picked up this peplum tank in the Kmart clearance sale and wanted to wear it another way to meet my 'wear twice in the month I buy it' goal for all my new purchases. Since I wore it with a pencil skirt last time, I wore it more casually this time with the bermuda denim shorts. The pink beaded necklace and mini MAC bag were fun accessories to pop against the blue printed kimono too.

Had quite a busy day. A relaxed morning browsing the opshop after dropping off another couple of bags of donations, and of course picking up a couple of things for myself too! Then had an appointment for the boys in the afternoon. With the heat and humidity, I liked this light kimono addition to my outfit as it kept me sun-safe and didn't add to the heat.

How You Can Wear It:

A peplum tank is a nice twist on a basic tank - just as easy to wear, but with a little ruffled hem to add a point of difference to your outfit. If the outfit still seems a little plain, why not add a kimono for colour and interest in summer, or a scarf in cooler weather. A brightly coloured bag is another fun accessory that works year-round!

Shorts, Tees and Printed Kimonos With Purple Mini MAB Tote Bag

Two outfits following the same outfit formula but with different colour schemes! The first outfit is pink and purple and the second is purple again, but with blue instead. These simple shorts, tee and kimono outfits are a summer staple for me and perfect for mum life.

Why I wore it:

I really liked this outfit. I like grey and pink together but this outfit felt it was lacking something until I added the kimono - the perfect touch! With the purple floral kimono, a purple mini MAB tote bag was the obvious choice to accessorise with.

It was a busy day! We went to a local opshop I'd heard good things about but never visited. It's a little out of the way, but with clothes just $1 each was definitely worth checking out! As usual, I left with more things for the boys than me, but it was still a good trip and we will have to try go more regularly. I still haven't found the perfect alternative to my favourite opshop after it closed.

Of course after spending time doing something for me in the morning, we had to go do something for the boys later. We visited a travelling petting zoo at a shopping centre, and it was so much fun. We all had a great time. I did regret my shoe choice as these studded Balenciaga sandals are maybe a little too delicate for straw and animals everywhere, and when I got a cup of animal feed spilled over me and into the cuffs of my shorts I regretted them a little too! But it was so much fun overall I didn't dwell on it for long!

Why I wore it:

This day was not as exciting as the one above! Took the boys out to the library, the playground and then picked up some groceries on the way home. I really liked the outfit formula above though, so much that I repeated it again here, just changing the colour scheme a little. Blue and purple is another of those combinations that I love, so I kept the purple Rebecca Minkoff mini MAB tote bag and switched the purple kimono out for this pretty blue one and the grey tee for a white one. Blue denim shorts and just simple Havaianas made this a great outfit that follows the outfit formula above but created its own unique outfit I loved just as much.

It's taken me a few years to face my fears and buy a white tee, but I'm glad I did, I really like this one from Atmos&Here and it works so nicely with blue!

Accessorising Handbags & Blue Printed Dresses

It's no secret blue is my favourite colour, and while I have a few dresses in my wardrobe, blue printed dresses make up the majority! Both of these dresses are very different styles and prints, but are great for a hot summer day. I accessorised them both with bright mini bags, and accessorised further by adding accessories to those bags themselves.

Why I wore it:

I wasn't doing anything special on this day - a quiet day out with the boys, but sometimes you just want to throw on a pretty dress. This lightweight one is so good in the heat too, and since I picked it up on clearance at Kmart for $2, it's down to a $1 cost per wear already!

Last time I wore this I paired it with a pastel pink bag to match the print of the dress. This time around I decided to do something a little different. I love blue and pink and pink and purple and blue and purple together, this dress gives me the ability to wear all three! Since I was wearing the purple mini MAB tote bag and it has gold hardware, I picked my rose gold filigree heart necklace to wear.

I really liked this outfit - simple but perfect for a hot day! The purple mini MAB tote bag has a little extra interest too with the faux fur pom pom charm - a gift a few years ago from one of my friends, it looks so good on this bag it lives there permanently!

Why I wore it:

This dress is a summer favourite, although I have layered it up for winter a few times in the years I've owned it. I wanted something simple to wear at a catch up at my parents. Since they were missing Christmas as they were going overseas, we caught up with the family to give them a few gifts before they left, and have a yummy dinner together.

I don't think I've worn red with this dress before, but I really liked the way this little Rebecca Minkoff micro Avery bag popped with the blue print. I had to go a little matchy-matchy and wear my red necklace with it too, even though it's guaranteed one or both of the boys will grab on this when I'm wearing it to get a closer look!

To further continue to the blue, and to change up the look of the micro Avery bag a little as I've been frequently wearing it, I added one of my scarves from Fashion Scarf Girl. Such a fun little hair scarf, it looks great tied in a bow on this handbag handle!

This bag was on sale for $146.25, although I don't recall if it was AUD or USD and the receipt doesn't tell me. Given that it's been worn over 50 times since then, it's getting good cost per wear! $2.71 per wear so far, and that will go down the longer I use the bag. It still looks new! It has a lot more wears to go to get the magic '$1 per wear' people aim for, but I know I will hit that with it eventually. I'm pleased with the cost per wear so far.

This plum purple bag was purchased in the Australian spring of 2015, which means it was an American autumn / winter bag. I've found the colour so easy to wear year round! One thing to note though is that the bag doesn't completely seal up,  o maybe not a good idea on a snowy or wet day!

Maxi Skirts and Printed Tanks With Denim Jacket and Rebecca Minkoff Mini Bags

Felt like it had been a while since I'd worn some of my maxi skirts, so it was time to get them out again! Pairing plain maxi skirts with printed tanks and a denim jacket to make the perfect spring outfit.

Why I wore it:

A busy day required a comfortable outfit. After doing the day care drop off, I worked from home before heading back to daycare and picking up the boys for an appointment in the afternoon.

As it was a slightly warmer day, I thought it was the perfect time to wear this maxi skirt. It has slits up both sides, so it was a little chilly last time I wore it in autumn, but was perfect for this warmer day. I really liked the simplicity of this outfit, and how comfortable it was! Every time I wear this printed tank I really like the outfit, I should wear it more often.

WIth all of the neutrals, the little purple Rebecca Minkoff mini MAB tote bag was the perfect pop of colour with my outfit.

Why I wore it:

A colourful outfit with some of my favourite pieces for a sad day! We had a service to close the chapter at our regular playgroup building. After our last week there, I felt it would be good to go and say thank you to everyone who helped us over the years, as lots of the people who worked there over the centre's 20 year history came back for the day.

The boys did so well through the service, although when it drew to a close and they mentioned it was time for morning tea, a certain little boy couldn't contain his excitement any longer and screamed 'MORNING TEA!', much to the amusement of the previously sad and reflective crowd. The funniest part was how many people came up to me afterwards and commented that is was just like him to do that - sums up my son so well, he always brings a smile to people's faces. Of course it wasn't long before the cake the boys were eating made its way onto my outfit!

I wasn't sure how formal the service would be so thought the denim jacket would be best to cover up my shoulders in this sleeveless tank, even if it was a bit warm and I ended up taking it off for the rest of the day. The colourful striped tank and bag were my attempt to bring some cheer to the day - it was a lovely way to have some closure after our time there (over three and a half years!) but sad all the same. I shed a few tears.

Purple Jeans, Stripe Tanks and Grey Cardis With Mini MAB Tote Bag

I love repeating outfits I've enjoyed before and just tweaking the formula slightly to make a new outfit. It's nice being able to group them together when I post too so you can get some different ideas of ways to wear things. There wasn't a lot of changing things up with these outfits though! I wore almost completely identical outfits. Striped tanks, grey cardigans, blue accessories and purple jeans with a little Rebecca Minkoff mini MAB Tote.

It seems a little strange for me to be posting these layered up outfits in October and the middle of spring, but on the early spring days I shared these the mornings were chilly enough for me to want layers. Even if the layers didn't stay on long!

Why I wore it:

Wore this to head to our ABA mothers group catch up. Usually I just delete pics like this, but I thought it was a perfect representation of the day (and also because I spent much longer than usual battling the wind to try get an okay photo that morning before I gave up!). Coopers windblown face is just too funny not to share too 😂

While it was forecast to be a warm day, it was a cold morning, especially with the wind, and our catch up is in a church hall. Big and spacious, but also a little chilly! This light cardigan was the perfect layer over the striped tank and easy to take off when we ventured back outside in the afternoon. Now that scarves are not needed for warmth and are more of an optional accessory, it's good to wear my necklace collection again! This is a baby friendly one, perfect for sitting around chatting with mums and babies as I don't have to worry if a curious baby grabs it!

Why I wore it:

Almost the exact same outfit as the first one, just slightly warmer layers. With it being windy and a little chilly in the morning, I thought the cosy cardigan and big blanket scarf would be helpful when sitting outside with the boys at playgroup. I ended up taking the scarf off quite early in the day though. A wool scarf and a wool cardigan are just too much for a Brisbane spring!

It was actually our last session of playgroup. I was a little sad as we have been going there for over 3 and a half years. (First time we went here!) It's been shut down as the organisation that own the building feel it and the other services are no longer needed. They have found another space and organisation to run it which some of the mums will try going to, but for various reasons we can't attend in the new location.

It was sweet of the boys to give me lots of cuddles through the morning, and so sad saying goodbye. More for me than them, it's been such a constant, welcoming space for years for us, from one baby to 2 and I have so many happy memories. The big party we had was a nice way to say goodbye.
