Outfits for Expressing Breastmilk at Work: Pumping Friendly Dresses

It can be difficult finding affordable, stylish and professional breastfeeding friendly clothes! If you're returning to work while your baby is small you may need to find things you can wear that allow you to express breast milk through the day.

While I've expressed breastmilk for my babies at home and when out and about (like at a wedding!), I haven't had to express in the office or negotiate any pumping breaks during my day. I do know from my experiences outside the office that these outfits would work perfectly for expressing. They are ideal for attending and facilitating meetings too.

One more thing to note before I get to the outfits is that you have legal rights in Australia that allow you to continue to work and breastfeed - you can read more here to find out how to get the support you need to return to work while breastfeeding. "It is generally against the law to refuse to make arrangements to assist you to breastfeed at work, if these are reasonable". Your rights in more detail.

What I wore:

witner expressing friendly office outfits for pumping breastmilk wrap dress trench coat | AwayFromBlue

Jacket: Barkins beige trench coat
Scarf: star print pashmina
DressAtmos&Here Arlette jersey wrap dress
ShoesWalnut Melbourne 'Ava' black lizard ballet flats (also available in silver)
BagMarc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown

Why I wore it:

This dress is one of the handful of pieces I've bought that failed the 'wear twice in a month after buying it' rule. I bought it while on maternity leave, not wanting to pass on the sale bargain and knowing I'd get a lot of wear out of it when I returned to the office. I do like wrap dresses for easy breastfeeding, but this one seemed a little out of place in summer when I wore it and so it was put aside until my return to work. This is only it's second wear now, 7 months after I bought it!

Glad I bought it though, it is perfect for the office. I layered a colourful tank underneath but you can't really see it with all the layers on top! Really enjoyed wearing this, and I enjoyed getting out this Marc Jacobs Fran bag again too. It only really gets worn to the office so it's been a while since I've worn this too, over a year and a half!

Last worn: camel trench, star print scarfzig zag print wrap dress, Walnut Melbourne Ava ballet flats, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran.

Other ways to wearcamel trench and pencil skirts, star print scarf and skinny jeans, zig zag print wrap dress worn outside the office, black ballet flats and printed jeans, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran and skinny jeans.

Perfect for pregnancy: trench coat and hidden first trimester bump, star print scarf and second trimester bump, black ballet flats and maternity pencil skirt, Marc Jacobs Fran bag in second trimester.

What I wore:

easy outfit for expressing breastmilk in office winter printed wrap dress | Away From Blue

printed wrap dress, Marc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown | AwayFromTheBlue
Tank: Kmart navy ribbed tank
DressAtmos&Here Betsy jersey wrap dress in watercolour print
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs black logo plaque ballet flats
BagMarc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown

Why I wore it:

Unlike the wrap dress above, this one has been worn quite a few times since I bought it while pregnant. Even though I bought it a size larger than normal to accommodate a growing baby bump in my final trimester, being a wrap dress it still fits nicely without the bump.

Decided to go with the blue coat, scarf and tank underneath too. I like all the blue with the turquoise print of the dress. I didn't feel quite as confident in this dress as I did in the same one with a different print above. Only because I kept stopping to realise through the day that the last time I'd been in the office with this dress I was pregnant, and it made me miss my boys. Hopefully it will be easier next time I wear this dress, I'll spend less time caught in my own thoughts.

Returning to work is an emotional time, compounded by baby boy not adjusting to the change well and having disrupted sleep. Walking into a meeting room, or the lift, or the kitchen, or sitting at my desk and realising last time I did those things in this dress I was pregnant made it a bit of a tough day to get through as my boys were always at the forefront of my mind.

Last worn: navy mac, cobalt scarf, navy tank, printed wrap dress, black ballet flats, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran bag (above).

Other ways to wearnavy mac and chambray dress, cobalt scarf with monochrome maxi skirt outfit, navy tank and printed shorts, printed wrap dress and ankle boots, black ballet flats, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran bag and burgundy pants.

Perfect for pregnancy: wrap dress in the last trimesterFran bag at 40 weeks pregnant.

How You Can Wear It:

A wrap dress is a classic wardrobe item that a lot of people have. They are timeless, suit so many different people and are usually pretty affordable. The wrap detail makes access for breastfeeding easy, and it's this feature that makes them a good dress choice for anyone who has to express too. You can easily layer a breastfeeding singlet underneath, or quickly slip them off to put on a pumping bra instead if you have one.

A wrap dress can make you look and feel good, meet corporate office dress codes and work for you if you're returning to work and breastfeeding or expressing.

Frocktober: Blue Printed Dresses - Work and Weekend with Gold Necklaces

For the final days of the Frocktober challenge, I'd saved some of my favourite blue dresses to wear. I'm sharing dresses 29 and 30, for work and weekend. I wore them both with gold necklaces!

What I wore:

Away from Blue | Spring Second Trimester Office Wear Aztec print dress ankle boots

AwayFromTheBlue blog | Marc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown
JacketJeanswest Cassandra jacquard jacket
NecklaceHouse of Harlow Dynamic necklace in gold
DressJeanswest Aztec print dress
Belt: Kmart thin gold glitter belt
ShoesAsos airtime leather Chelsea boots in tan
Bracelets: the usual plus Roie Designs waxed leather cream howlite beaded wrap bracelet
BagMarc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown

Why I wore it:

Last time I wore this jacket (pre-Frocktober) I wore it with blue too, and the same accessories! I really like the jacket and the dress, so although they are both 'busy', I wanted to wear them together. It looked much better than the last time I tried to wear this jacket with a blue printed dress I think!

This dress is one of my favourites for work, and I'd saved it for near the end as it fit in the third trimester last time so I knew I'd definitely be able to wear it in the second trimester.

Wore this to MC a Frocktober frock fashion parade at work. Wearing my favourite colour, blue, always calms me and wearing a dress I'm happy and confident in even with a growing baby bump helped me be a little less nervous, as I hate public speaking. All the 'models' did so well, took the attention off me so I could relax a little more and we raised a lot for Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, which was wonderful!

Last worn: metallic boucle jacket, gold glitter belt, Aztec print dress, Asos Chelsea ankle bootsMarc by Marc Jacobs Fran.

Other ways to wearboucle jacket casually with a maxi skirt, gold glitter belt and a maxi dress, Aztec print dress in the third trimester, Asos Chelsea ankle bootsMarc by Marc Jacobs Fran with a pencil skirt.

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Second trimester SAHM style blue printed maxi dress baby bump

Away From Blue | Rebecca Minkoff mini MAB tote in plum purple with blue maxi dress
Necklace: Happiness Boutique turquoise and coral pendant necklace (C/O)
Dress: Jeanswest 'Chantelle' crochet detail blue printed maxi dress
ShoesIkwetta 'Circles of life' sandals (C/O)
Bracelets: the usual plus House of Harlow sunburst wrap bracelet in cobalt
BagRebecca Minkoff mini MAB tote in plum

Why I wore it:

I had to save a maxi dress for near the end of the challenge! It's been a few months since I last wore this dress too, as I last wore it for toddler T's first birthday party!

I wore this during the day, my sister and I took toddler T out for a morning of fun. We went to rhyme time at the local library, and spent a while inside an indoor playgrounds (I carried a pair of socks for me in the baby bag for that, as you have to wear socks). We had lunch together then took a very tired but happy toddler home to nap.

In the evening, I got changed into yet another dress! I hadn't had a chance to wear it during the challenge, was keeping it as one that would work for the office if I ran out of dresses, so it was good to squeeze in a wear. My sister and I went out to see one of our favourite bands we loved growing up, doing their final gig in Brisbane. I've shared my love for Kisschasy before, and they did play my favourite 'Strings and Drums' song as part of their set. It was a bittersweet show.

Last worn: blue printed maxi dress, Ikwetta sandals, Rebecca Minkoff mini MAB tote bag.

Other ways to wear: blue printed maxi dress for a Christmas party, beaded sandals with a leopard print dress, purple bag with a black maxi dress.

Frocktober: MbMJ Fran Bag, Dresses For The Office And Working From Home

Sticking with the outfit posting format I was using during October while sharing my Frocktober outfits, another two dresses in the order I wore them. Even if they are both very different looks, they do have the Marc by Marc Jacobs handbag in common I guess.

What I wore:

Away From The Blue | Second Trimester Office Wear Leona Edmiston Fern print dress boucle blazer

AwayFromBlue | Workwear Marc By Marc Jacobs Carob Brown Fran Bag
NecklaceHouse of Harlow Dynamic necklace in gold
Dress: Leona Edmiston Jemima fern print dress
ShoesWalnut Melbourne 'Ava' black lizard ballet flats
Bracelets: the usual plus Roie Designs black leather Swarovski beaded wrap bracelet
BagMarc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown

Why I wore it:

Last time I wore this dress, I hated the outfit, despite the good response it received online. This time around, I liked it much better! I've worn this dress in the second trimester before so I was confident that I could still fit into it, and so wasn't in a rush to wear it at the beginning of the Frocktober challenge. It really came in handy on this day when I was starting to worry I'd outgrown all my work appropriate non-maternity dresses.

It's funny comparing the pictures of when I wore it the second trimester before to now. I can definitely see that the baby bump is bigger this time around. It's always going to be that way with a second baby, but it's interesting having side by side photos to compare it to! Also gave me a giggle to see I'd worn it in a very similar way - same necklace, Marc Jacobs bag and black ballet flats!

Last worn: boucle blazer, Leona Edmiston fern print dress, Walnut Melbourne ballet flats, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran bag.

Other ways to wearboucle blazer in autumn, Leona Edmiston fern print dress hiding a first trimester baby bump, ballet flats and tights in winter, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran bag with pants in the office.

AwayFromBlue | Marc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown
DressZalora Basics faux leather placket red shift dress
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in white
BagMarc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown

Why I wore it:

While it was warm and sunny in the morning, it got cold and rainy in the afternoon so the scarf was a welcome addition. I had to work from home in the morning and then had an OB appointment in the afternoon, after my appointment the week before was cancelled as there were too many ladies having babies and requiring the OB's attention! I slipped shorts underneath for that, but you can't see them in the pic.

I wasn't too impressed with the first time I wore this scarf, so I was eager to try it again. I preferred it worn this way, I twisted it a little to make it look less bulky. I wasn't sure about the red and yellow at first, but decided to give the colour combination a try.

Last worn: yellow scarf, red shift dress, white Converse, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran (above).

Other ways to wearyellow scarf with a navy printed dress, red shift dress layered up for winter (my favourite outfit with this dress), Converse and a maxi skirt, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran bag for the office.

Frocktober: 31 Days, 31 Different Dresses. Prints and Marc By Marc Jacobs Bags

Getting around to blogging my Frocktober outfits now! (I've been posting everyday on the #Frocktober2015 tag on instagram). For a while my posts will be nothing but dresses.

What is Frocktober?
Frocktober is a month where you can set yourself a challenge involving a dress (or dresses) to raise funds and awareness for Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.

Why fund-raise?
One woman dies every 10 hours from ovarian cancer. There is no early detection test, so people are often diagnosed when it is too late and the cancer has spread.

What's the challenge?
There are 31 days in October, so for Frocktober I've decided to wear a dress each of those 31 days. To really challenge myself, I'm going to be wearing a different dress every day. #31Days31DifferentDresses. Makes it a little less boring and repetitive on the blog here too, and I'm hoping along the way to identify a few of my many dresses that no longer need to stay in my wardrobe.

How can I help?
I would love for you to donate - you can donate through my fundraising page here (I have a goal of reaching $200). It's not too late to get on board yourself either! What about a girls night in/out or a morning tea in your office, where everyone has to wear a frock and make a donation to the cause?

Now, kicking off my Frocktober outfits.

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Frocktober Office Wear Printed ruffle dress blazer MbMJ Fran and mouse flats

AwayFromTheBlue | Marc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown
Jacket: Zara cream jersey blazer
Necklace: old pink bead necklace I don't recall where I bought it
Dress: Jeanswest animal print dress
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs metallic mouse flats
Bracelets: the usual
BagMarc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown

Why I wore it:

My first frock: this lovely Jeanswest printed one that I like wearing to the office. Paired with a blazer as it was a little chilly in the morning, and it's good to have my shoulders covered from the cold air conditioning at work. I've used this dress in the past to hide a second trimester baby bump in the office, and was pleased to find it hid the early second trimester bump this time around too.

I knew I hadn't worn this dress in a while, but didn't realise it had been over a year and a half! I am definitely keeping this in my wardrobe, but I need to get rid of some other dresses so this comes up in the rotation more frequently.

Last worn: Zara blazer, animal print dress, metallic mouse flats, Marc Jacobs Fran bag.

Other ways to wearZara blazer and flared jeansanimal print dress in summer with orange and yellow, mouse flats and jeans, Marc Jacobs Fran bag and printed pants.

ShoesRMK Chester black ankle boots (on sale here!)
Bracelets: the usual plus Roie Designs waxed leather cream howlite beaded wrap bracelet
BagMarc by Marc Jacobs Little Ukita bag in Rock Lobster

Why I wore it:

A more casual outfit for my second dress of Frocktober. This one again, hasn't been worn in a while. it's been a little over a year since I last wore it. It's cute and comfortable and really should be worn more! It was perfect for a hot spring day. Toddler T and I spent the morning visiting family on the coast and then had lunch with my mum.

I thought the denim jacket looked nice with this, although I took it off pretty quickly as the day heated up. This jacket only really seems to get worn in spring, so I'm making the most of it now before it's neglected in my wardrobe over summer!

Last worn: denim jacketAztec print dress, black ankle boots, Marc Jacobs Lil Ukita bag.

Tweed/Boucle Jackets Two Ways: Work And Weekend

Not one of my usual Monday Corporate Style outfit posts, instead I'm sharing one outfit I wore to the office and the other to work from home. Both featuring my Jeanswest boucle (or tweed) jackets, which I really like. I'm pleased to have something different to wear other than trench coats now that the spring weather has arrived and it's warmer in the mornings.

I thought I'd throw in my latest video as well that has some more office wear (8 different office outfit ideas to be exact) as well. Just in case you hadn't seen the news on instagram ;)

What I wore:

AwayFromBlue | Corporate Style Boucle Jacket cobalt blue top pencil skirt office wear

AwayFromBlue | Marc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown
NecklaceHouse of Harlow Dynamic necklace in gold
Tee: thrifted Dotti blue tee
SkirtJeanswest black ponte pencil skirt
Shoes:  Marc by Marc Jacobs metallic mouse flats
BagMarc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown

Why I wore it:

I had a busy day ahead in the office, so I dressed simply with a bright cobalt tee and a pencil skirt. I thought the jacket was a nice touch too, although I swapped it out for a cardigan when I got to my desk. I've mentioned before that the decorative zipper pulls on this jacket (that you can see in the pics) are lovely, but are not the best when trying to type quietly in an open plan office!

This cobalt blouson tee is another good option not in the video that hides a baby bump nicely in the office!

Last worn: jacquard jacket, cobalt blue tee, black pencil skirt, gold mouse flats, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran bag.

Other ways to wearjacquard jacket and skinny jeans, cobalt blue tee and a maxi skirt, pencil skirt layered over a dress, gold mouse flats and skinny jeans, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran bag and a little red dress.

What I wore:

JeansJeanswest Bindi skinny 7/8 jeans in indigo luxe
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs suede flats in red
Bracelets: the usual plus Hermes Kelly double tour bracelet in rubis
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey

Why I wore it:

This is more of a weekend look with a boucle jacket! I wore this to work from home, and then go out with a friend for dinner in the evening. Just like last week, it's a little more dressed up than I'd normally be to work from home, but perfect for a night out.

We ended up staying quite a while at the restaurant - toddler T was so well behaved, and time flies when you're catching up with people!

Oh and if you're wondering how I'm still wearing my skinny jeans in the second trimester - I bought a belly band this time around! Didn't want to spill the beans too early by wearing my maternity jeans right away. ;)

Last worn: tweed jacket, polka dot cami, prima skinny jeans, red suede flats, Rebecca Minkoff Love bag.

Other ways to weartweed jacket in the office (my favourite outfit with this jacket), polka dot cami with striped maxi skirt, prima skinny jeans in winter, red suede flats and a leopard print dress, Rebecca Minkoff Love bag and maxi dresses.

Corporate Style: Blazers, Colourful Pants and Printed Tops, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran Bag

Wearing some colourful pants to the office. Well, one pair of colourful pants, and sneaking in a pair of coloured jeans to work and passing them off as normal pants.

Since I'm doing the Frocktober challenge this year, I wanted to try wear something other than dresses to the office (I wore these back at the end of September). When I get around to posting my October outfits, it's going to be all dresses!

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Fun Office Wear: dog print blouse, cream blazer, marsala pants

Away From Blue | Marc by Marc Jacobs Classic Q fran bag Carob brown
Jacket: Zara cream jersey blazer
NecklaceTai gold alphabet necklace
Top: Target ruffle sleeve dog print blouse
PantsJeanswest 'Fiona' skinny leg pant in shiraz
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs logo plaque flats in camel
Bag: Marc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown

Why I wore it:

I've worn this top with red pants before, so it was an easy choice to try my burgundy ones. I really liked this outfit combination! The blazer and pants combo I've worn together before too, there was very little thinking required around this outfit. Nice and simple.

It was good to be able to wear these pants again, the last time I wore them I was in the accident and injured my knee. But it's healing up nicely!

Last worn: jersey blazer, dachshund print blouse, burgundy pants, camel flats, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran bag.

Other ways to wearjersey blazer and jeans, dachshund print blouse and a pencil skirt, burgundy pants on the weekend, camel flats and a plaid shirt, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran bag and leopard print pants.

Buy blazers at Shopbop (Starting from $40!):

Away from Blue blog Shopbop Blazer Edit

Since I've previously shared some of the colourful pants available at Shopbop, I thought I'd show you the great blazers instead! There is a Rag & Bone blazer that's really similar to the one I'm wearing above, but it is on the more expensive side.

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Business Casual Office Wear jersey blazer polka dot ruffle blouse

Away From The Blue | Marc by Marc Jacobs Carob Brown Fran Bag
Jacket: thrifted Zara black blazer
NecklaceTai gold alphabet necklace
Blouse: Jeanswest 'Ricky' ruffle front top in midnight
PantsJeanswest 'shale' super skinny jeans
ShoesWalnut Melbourne 'Ava' black lizard ballet flats
Bracelets: the usual
BagMarc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown

Why I wore it:

I was looking for another pair of pants I could wear to work, so that I didn't end up wearing the burgundy pants above twice in one week! Apart from the burgundy pair, all my other pants are jeans and I don't have anything just for work after my wardrobe detox. Pants are hard for me to find, being petite. That's why I have so many jeans from Jeanswest - they just fit perfectly, so I'll keep buying them ;)

I have worn these jeans into the office before, so I decided to wear them that way again. They are quite a dark grey and you wouldn't really know they were denim just by glancing at them. They work nicely for my business casual office that is more casual than business.

Last worn: Zara black jersey blazer, polka dot ruffle tank, grey skinny jeans, black ballet flats, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran bag (above).

Other ways to wearblack blazer and a striped dress, polka dot ruffle tank and red accessories, grey skinny jeans in summer, ballet flats and a pencil skirtMarc by Marc Jacobs Fran bag and a little red dress.

Corporate Style: Printed Scarf, Fit and Flare Dresses, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran Bag

Before the outfits, since it's nearly the end of September I wanted to share my usual monthly purchases with you. Although I don't have any! I ended up doing Beth's #noSpenderSeptember without really thinking about it.

There's a mix of reasons why I haven't bought anything this month:

The lack of incredible sales is probably the biggest driver for me not buying anything this month to be honest, ha! If you're really missing a purchase update from me, you can always browse my old monthly purchase recaps on youtube.

Now, what I've been wearing. Sticking again with another simple outfit formula for the office, fit and flare dresses. I even ended up wearing the same scarf with each dress! I've worn these two dresses one after the other before too.

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Spring Office wear LBD fit and flare jacquard blazer printed scarf flats

AwayFromBlue | Marc by Marc Jacobs carob brown classic Q Fran bag
Jacket: Jeanswest Cassandra jacquard jacket
ScarfJeanswest Lux paisley print scarf (C/O)
DressJeanswest tucked ponte black dress
ShoesWalnut Melbourne 'Ava' black lizard ballet flats
BagMarc By Marc Jacobs Classic Q Fran bag with gold hardware in carob brown

Why I wore it:

Feels like it's been a while since I last wore this jacket to work! I've been wearing my trench coats to the office often as it's been colder even though it's spring and they are the warmest coats I have for commuting. As it was really quite warm on this day, I took the chance to wear something else over my outfit for a change!

I liked the simplicity of this outfit, even if I don't like the picture as the scarf is sitting a little oddly.

Last worn: jacquard jacket, blue printed scarf, black ponte knit dress, black ballet flats, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran bag.

Other ways to wearjacquard jacket and jeans, paisley scarf and a striped cardigan, LBD with gold accessories, black ballet flats a maxi skirt, Marc by Marc Jacobs Fran bag with burgundy pants.

Why I wore it:

The trench coat is back out! After a nice sunny and warm spring day (above) a storm rolled in and brought a lot of rain and cooled it back down again.

I had been planning to try recreate an outfit I'd seen on Shea. She posted a really cute outfit with a similar dress, blue tasselled printed scarf, ankle boots and a pink cardigan. I was planning to wear my pink blazer instead, as I don't have a pink cardigan, but with it being so cold I ended up grabbing my purple cardigan and a trench. Although it didn't work out like I'd planned, I really liked this outfit. The ankle boots came in handy with the rain too, kept my feet nice and dry!
