Tailoring Thrifted Pieces: Is It Worth It? Opshop Finds and Denim Jackets

While I'm not a massive opshopper (thrift shopper for my American readers!) I do like browsing when I can and occasionally getting a bargain. Back in October, my local store had a 'fill a bag for $2' sale. I took the rare opportunity to leave the boys home with hubby and have some time to myself to browse. I didn't try anything on, just filling my bag with things that looked good and I guesstimated would work.

I've shared before that I sometimes wonder if it's worth buying less than perfect pieces at the opshop with the idea of spending more to get them tailored to fit. But with two of the thrifted pieces I'm wearing below I decided to go ahead and spend more on getting them tailored. They worked out at 67 cents each so even with the average $14 tailoring price for both they were still bargains.

What I wore:

denim jacket, printed thrifted dress altered into skirt outfit for errands | away from blue

thrifted dress as skirt, Rebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold | away from the blue

awayfromblue instagram denim jacket thrifted dress as skirt
Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
Necklace: Nibbly Bits Wilma teething necklace in pale daffodil
Tank: Jeanswest brown marle singlet
Skirt: Thrifted tribal print maxi skirt (new purchase)
Shoesslim gold Havaianas
BagRebecca Minkoff micro Regan satchel in Harvest Gold

Why I wore it:

This beautiful tribal print skirt used to be a strapless dress. It looked nicely made, but you could see where the fabric had been pulled from someone constantly adjusting it. I couldn't get past the gorgeous print and colours, it looked lovingly handmade too so I added it to my bag, reasoning I could wear it as a maxi skirt. When I got it home and tested this theory out, I realised it was going to need a bit of elastic sewn in to keep it in place as a skirt. Luckily my tailor was happy to do that for me. While it's not quite maxi skirt length, and is more an ankle grazing length on me, I adore it. I've never seen anything like this in the stores and being cotton it's sure to get a lot of wear over summer.

It's made me think about getting my red maxi skirt fixed up - it's a bit too long (#petiteprobs!) but I usually just get around that by wearing it higher on my waist.

Wore this out for an errand filled day with the boys, trying to cram everything in before a predicted storm was due to arrive. Thankfully it passed right by us. I did a little detour in the morning and stopped by the Jeanswest sale again, and picked up another little something which you'll have already seen in my November purchase post.

Last worn: denim jacket, brown marle tank, gold Havaianas, Rebecca Minkoff Micro Regan. First time I've worn the skirt as it was a recent purchase.

Other ways to weardenim jacket and maxi dress, brown marle tank and wrap dress, Rebecca Minkoff Micro Regan worn 30 ways.

Perfect for pregnancy: denim jacket and hidden baby bump, brown tank in third trimestergold Havaianas and maternity bermuda shorts.

Denim Jackets Under $50:

What I wore:

Jacket: Bubblegum denim jacket
Necklace: Nibbly Bits Abacus teething necklace in pop
Tee:  thrifted mix apparel black space dye tee
Shorts: Thrifted pastel pink cotton shorts
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey

Why I wore it:

Both the tee and the shorts I picked up at the same $2 sale! The super soft tee was perfect as it was, so no alterations were needed there. I got it to replace my black tee which I accidentally destroyed by sticking it in the wrong wash cycle one too many times!

When I saw these shorts I was drawn to the colour and felt positive when I saw the size label was my normal size. I threw them in the bag. After having my colours 'done' pastels were one of the things suggested to keep away from my face, so I thought these shorts would be a nice way to add some pastels to my summer outfits.

I was disappointed to get them home and realise that they were either labeled incorrectly or a different sizing standard, as they were much too big. After debating if I could belt them, I decided to go ask my tailor if she could do anything. And she could! I felt pretty good about giving these shorts a new life, slightly tapered off by then seeing very similar shorts on sale for less than half the cost of the alterations.

The way I see it though, I supported a charity buying them in the first place (even though it was just $2...), and supported a local business with the alterations. So I don't feel too bad that there are similar styles available cheaper. $14.67 is a pretty good price for a cute pair of shorts!

Wore these out to playgroup, where the boys had chocolate chip cookies and of course my shorts were smeared in chocolate. Hopefully these light shorts will fare better next time I wear them!

Last worn: denim jacket (above), black marle tee, black Havaianas, Rebecca Minkoff Love bag. First time I've worn the pastel pink shorts as they are recently back from the tailor.

Other ways to weardenim jacket and printed maxi skirt, black marle tee and olive shorts, Rebecca Minkoff Love bag and floral maxi dress.

Perfect for pregnancy: denim jacket in third trimester, Love bag and maxi dress in third trimester.

How You Can Wear It:

It can be tricky to find your size when op shopping. While there are ways around things being slightly too big like belting or wearing skirts higher on your waist, you can always alter something to make it fit. If you're not crafty or are a bad sewer like I am, finding a local tailor is a good idea. They can give you ideas and advice on ways to change garments and make them work for you. Something to try when you love something so much you don't want to leave the store without it. (Tia is my local tailor who I recommend if you're in the Brisbane bayside and this post was not sponsored, she doesn't even know I'm writing it).

Do you buy things knowing they will need alterations, or do you leave them on the opshop rack and hunt for other treasures that fit?

Dresses and Kimonos: Easy Spring Boho Stay at Home Mum Style

So excited for warm weather and the chance to wear my kimonos again! I love wearing dresses in spring, so dresses and kimonos together make me happy.

What I wore:

Necklace: Nibbly Bits Feather pendant in peach (C/O)
Dress: Kmart Aztec print tiered little black dress
ShoesWittner 'Jasmarie' studded sandals
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey

Why I wore it:

A quick errand in the morning, my local ABA mother's group meeting and then a doctor's appointment for Baby Boy in the afternoon. As it was such a hot day, I wanted something nice and easy to wear. I knew I wanted to wear this dress again, but wasn't sure what kimono to wear with it. In the end I settled on this tribal print kimono as some of the print is similar to the Aztec print on the dress. The night before I held them up side by side and figured it would look okay.

When I put it on in the morning, I loved this outfit. I like the extra colour the kimono adds to the dress, and this was perfect for a day with a bit of running around. This dress is loose and flowy and knee-length on me so it's just as good for a doctor's appointment as it is sitting down on the floor chatting to my mum friends who have younger babies doing tummy time. I wouldn't change anything about this outfit. So glad I was able to buy this dress at the end of my #6MonthsWithoutShopping challenge, I've loved it every time I've worn it.

Last worn: red tribal print kimono, black Aztec print dress, studded sandals, Rebecca Minkoff grey Love bag.

Why I wore it:

Another doctor's appointment! Vaccinations for baby boy meant we were going to have a quiet day. After the doctors, we headed out to do a little shopping and take part in a fun plant pot decorating activity for the boys. Surprisingly we have managed to not only keep the seeds alive, they are now sprouting quite nicely! As someone who has killed succulents and cacti I'm quite proud we are keeping these plants alive so far.

The morning came undone when we stopped at Kmart to buy some new shorts and tees for the warmer weather and someone wanted to buy a train (even though they had just convinced their Grandmother to buy them two trains the day before). Ended up getting lots of side eyes as I hurriedly finished shopping and headed home after realising nothing I was saying was helping end the tantrum. Not quite the quiet relaxing day I had planned, but will be a funny story to tell later! "Remember that time you screamed in Kmart and all the way home because you wanted a train?" 😂

At least I liked my outfit, plenty of people saw it when they looked around to see where the screaming child was! Toddler tantrums are just an unavoidable part of motherhood.

Kimonos Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

Kimonos work perfectly in spring when you need a light layer. While they look wonderful with denim shorts and jeans, they look equally good worn with dresses. It's a quick and easy spring outfit.

If you're unsure what kimono to wear with your dress, you can pick one with a similar print, or add some more colour and print with a kimono over a plain dress.

Rainy Spring Style: Printed Layers, Colourful Pants and Neutral V-Neck Tees

Spring weather can be pretty varied in Brisbane, much like it can elsewhere in the world. You go from shorts one day to jeans and layers the next.

I took advantage of one of our spring cold snaps to layer up a little, wearing colourful pants with my neutral tees. One of which is leaving my wardrobe.

What I wore:

rainy day spring style dress worn as a kimono burgundy pants black tee | Away From Blue

Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC in aquamarine with python embossed leather | Away From The Blue

awayfromblue instagram printed shirt dress worn as kimono over burgundy pants
JacketAtmos&Here Nigella collarless shirt dress (worn as kimono)
Necklace: Nibbly Bits Feather pendant in peach (C/O)

PantsJeanswest 'Fiona' skinny leg pant in shiraz
ShoesAsos leather Chelsea boots in tan
BagRebecca Minkoff mini MAC in aquamarine with python embossed leather (on sale!)

Why I wore it:

It was a wet and windy day when I wore this. It wasn't very nice weather for the public holiday, or for the planned BBQ at the in-laws. Luckily BBQ's can still go on when it rains! Even if you do have to send someone out with an umbrella to do the cooking. 😂

Since I had been wanting to wear a dress, I decided to persist anyway and wear this printed shirt dress as a kimono. It was a nice extra layer against the wind. These burgundy pants are really good for work, but I like to wear them casually too - that's the main reason I bought them actually. They pass easily for skinny jeans, and look really nice cuffed over ankle boots.

Leaving my Wardrobe: Black V-Neck Tee

Unfortunately this is the last wearing of this black tee on the blog. I really like it but it's just not held up very well. It's normally soft and has the perfect drape, however to maintain that it needs a gentle wash and when you wear it around toddlers and babies...everything usually needs more than a gentle wash at the end of the day! It's been tossed in the washing machine for a serious wash too many times and has just stretched out and lost that softness. I was much too uncomfortable constantly pulling it back up and tugging it into place through the day. It's no longer fitting well and has stretched out so I really can't wear it. I usually plan to wear things one last time, and during the day as I constantly readjusted the tee I realised this was its last wear!

I'm sad it hasn't had a longer run in my wardrobe, but I know it was my own neglect that lead to it leaving. It was $17.47 and I wore it 15 times, $1.16 cost per wear. Not bad, but I really wish I could have hit 30 wears on it!

Why I wore it:

Since I liked the outfit above so much, I decided to wear a very similar one on the next cooler spring day. These red jeans are perfect with all of the neutrals, such a nice pop of colour. This striped duster is a good layer for spring - nice and light, not too heavy but keeps the wind at bay. Very comfortable to work from home and do the daycare drop off / pick up.

Unlike the black tee above, this grey tee is faring much better in my wardrobe and will be hanging around for a while. I have 7 grey tees in my wardrobe, a grey tee is a wardrobe must-have for me.

Shift Dresses In Winter With Boots, Scarves and Cross Body Bags

I love to wear my dresses year-round! These shift dresses layer up perfectly for a cooler day. Fleece lined tights and boots are essentials to help you wear them in winter.

What I wore:

summer tunic dress in winter tights boots scarf LV speedy cross body bag | Away From Blue

Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere | Away From The Blue

@awayfromblue @emhawkerblog @slowdownstyle outfit inspiration
Scarf: blue tartan scarf
Dress: Zara printed bib front tunic dress
Belt: Kmart thin gold glitter belt
ShoesAsos Cleo leather boots in tan
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

Wore this to spend the morning in the city with the boys. I'd been a little unsure what to wear but when I saw the #WinterStyleFile outfit on instagram by @emhawkerblog I just had to try replicate it. While I don't have the exact dress, I did have this dress with a similar print that worked quite well I think. The original outfit was a dress and boots by @slowdownstyle. Em added tights, a cardigan and hat so I added a scarf. See all 3 outfits on Instagram.

Even if it was quite warm in the city and I soon shed the layers, I really liked this outfit. every time I wear this dress I love it. I actually managed to tear it a while back, I was tugging to get it out of the washing machine and it had got tangled with something and I heard a rip. Thankfully the tailor could fix it up, as I'm planning on keeping this dress in my wardrobe for a long time. Unbelievably, this is only it's 19th wear. I was sure I'd have worn it more often.

Last worn: black belted cardigan, blue tartan scarf, gold beltprinted shift dress, tan boots, Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandouliere bag.

Other ways to wearblack belted cardigan and red jeans, blue tartan scarf and chambray skirt, gold belt and pink maxiprinted shift dress and ankle boots, tan boots and skinny jeans, Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandouliere bag and denim shorts.

Perfect for pregnancycardigan and hidden early baby bump, tartan scarf in first trimester, gold glitter belt at 38 weeks pregnantdress in the third trimester, speedy bandouliere and maternity office wear.

Why I wore it:

This red shift dress was packed away when I outgrew it in pregnancy as it's not breastfeeding friendly. It was so good to get it out and wear it again. I like red and blue together so the cobalt leather jacket seemed like a good choice with it.

I felt a little overdressed for the day care drop off / pick up and working from home, but it was still nice to have a reason to wear this dress again, it's been such a long time since it was last worn. Unboxing and wearing all of my winter pieces and non-breastfeeding pieces made my 6 months without shopping challenge easier to stick too, as it felt like I had 'new items in my wardrobe again!

Last worn: cobalt leather jacket, printed snood, red shift dress, Asos Cleo boots (above), Rebecca Minkoff quilted Love bag.

Red Shift Dresses Under $50:

How You Can Wear It:

It's easy to layer up your summer dresses for winter. You can go neutral with black cardigans, fleece tights and tan boots, or you can be a little brighter with a colourful jacket like this cobalt blue one. Layered outfits like this work perfectly at the beginning or near the end of winter when the temperatures vary during the day, as it's easy to take layers off as it heats up.

And just in case you missed it on social media, I ended 7 months without shopping with a pretty spectacular purchase!

Plain Henley Tops, Printed Jeans and Cosy Cardis: Winter SAHM Style

A plain top, printed jeans, a neutral cardigan and Converse makes an easy stay at home mum winter outfit.

I have a few long sleeve henley tops I packed away with my winter things that I've been trying to make an effort to wear again. In the last official month of winter I'm not sure I'll have many more chances to wear them!

What I wore:

black henley, belted knit cardigan, pink leopard print jeans, Converse | Away From Blue

Necklace: Nibbly Bits Feather pendant in peach (C/O)
TopJeanswest 'Tilda' black shirt
Jeans: Portmans pink leopard print skinny jeans
ShoesConverse Chuck Taylor All Star low in white
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey

Why I wore it:

If you saw my Insta stories you might know I was lucky enough to be given a few new teething necklaces by Dee from Nibbly Bits. This peach feather pendant is one of the ones I got, it goes nicely with a lot of outfits. I've shared my love for teething necklaces before, so I'm thankful to add some new ones to my wardrobe!

I love these pink leopard print jeans - I tend to wear them with grey a lot as I like pink and grey together but they look just as good with other neutrals like this black Henley. I actually ended up taking the cardigan off during the day - we went out to the local Quandamooka festival. While I didn't try a BBQ roo, croc or emu kebab we did enjoy walking around and meeting some of the boys' friends from daycare.

Unfortunately our lovely morning out turned into a stressful afternoon with an unexpected doctor's visit for Baby Boy - I was grateful for having the teething necklace on as it kept him amused in the waiting room.

Other ways to wearblack belted cardigan and skater dress, black henley top in the office, pink leopard print jeans with blue and yellow, white Converse and maxi dress, Rebecca Minkoff quilted Love bag and chambray.

Why I wore it:

A busy day! It was a little chilly in the morning when I wore this so I added the scarf. I thought this one wouldn't compete too much with the print on the jeans. While I loved the pop from the teal henley with the black and grey, I wasn't too sure about the scarf. Kept me warm though so met its purpose!

Had our local ABA meeting in the morning, but sadly we had to leave early to go to another doctor's appointment for baby boy. It's a shame as it was a good discussion topic too - talking about birth experiences and the first breastfeed. While my baby days are behind me, I think birth stories are fascinating, so many different ways our little ones make their arrivals into the world!

I'm so incredibly lucky to be able to return to work part time, but I am finding it difficult on my days off to cram everything in - the time goes so quickly! I know we will hit a rhythm soon. With winter coming to an end hopefully we will have less sickness and doctor visits too. I love our GP and everyone there at the surgery but it would be nice not to see them all so often.

If you're not sure what to wear with a printed piece, go plain! If you have a pair of printed jeans, dress, or top, pick a simple basic to wear with them. In this case, I picked two plain henleys. Olive Tanks, Jeans, Rebecca Minkoff Love Bag

Green is one of those colours I don't have a lot of in my wardrobe. Unlike purple or blue, I find it tricky to wear. Olive green is a neutral colour but I don't find it as easy to wear as my favorite neutral, grey! The two outfits below are me stepping out of my comfort zone a little and trying some new colour combinations.

What I wore:

lace kimono, striped olive tank, metallic gold Sass & Bide skinny jeans RM Love bag | AwayFromBlue

JacketShein cream lace kimono (C/O)

JeansSass and Bide 'Three Words' metallic gold jeans
ShoesRMK Chester black ankle boots
Bracelets: the usual plus Roie Designs waxed leather cream howlite beaded wrap bracelet
BagRebecca Minkoff Love cross body bag in grey (on sale!)

Why I wore it:

I like green and gold so thought I'd try this olive striped tank with my gold Sass & Bide jeans. After unboxing all of my jeans a few weeks ago when the cooler weather eventually arrived I've been trying to wear through them all to make sure I still want to keep them.

These jeans were an impulse buy when I got excited about fitting back into normal jeans after my first son was born. They are a nice departure from classic blue jeans, but sometimes feel a bit much to be worn for daytime, especially as a stay at home mum! While they are fun it's not good to have something in my wardrobe I feel I have to wear so they probably won't be hanging around much longer, even though I did love them in this outfit.

The lace kimono I wasn't sure about - but I needed a little something to take the morning chill off and wanted something soft for babywearing. Settled on this anyway and rushed out the door for a coffee date with some of the mums from my ABA group. We had a lovely chat and I had a delicious piece of caramel pecan slice. Unfortunately I had to eat it super quickly to stop grabby little toddler hands trying to take it off my plate! Eating around toddlers is never easy, even if you do try and distract them with their own choking-hazard-free-foods.

Last worn: lace kimono, olive and grey striped tank, metallic skinny jeans, black ankle boots, Rebecca Minkoff Love Bag.

Other ways to wearlace kimono and ombre maxi dress, olive and grey striped tank and denim shorts in summer, metallic skinny jeans and purple cardi, black ankle boots and shirt dress, Rebecca Minkoff Love Bag in a monochrome outfit.

Perfect for pregnancy: lace and chambray in second trimester, olive striped tank and maternity denim, ankle boots and tee dress for pregnancy announcement, Rebecca Minkoff Love bag and thirs trimester maxi dresses.

Where To Buy The Rebecca Minkoff Love Bag:

ShoesWalnut Melbourne 'Ava' black lizard ballet flats (also available in silver)
Bracelets: the usual plus Roie Designs pearl, howlite and hematite beaded bracelets

Why I wore it:

I'd actually been thinking about trying this blush pink blazer with an olive top for a while. It was Shea's Live Your Best Life for Less challenge prompts that gave me a reason to finally wear it. While it's not a combination I would have come up with on my own, and something I've picked up from reading other blogs, I quite liked the resulting outfit.

The olive tunic is long so I usually half-tuck it in (like I did here) to stop it overwhelming my petite frame. The Nobody denim skinny jeans are quite high waisted so the tuck was a little too high, and didn't look as good with the longer boyfriend length of the blazer. Really liked the tunic untucked in this outfit, and it was an incredibly comfortable outfit for Baby Boy's weekly weigh and running a few errands as well as spending time with my mum in the afternoon.

How You Can Wear It:

Olive is a lovely neutral that's perfect for autumn and winter. If you find it or any other colour tricky to wear, look to your own outfits. Do you wear a similar colour already? My previous outfits with seaglass green inspired the first outfit. You can also get ideas from bloggers, and Instagram style challenges are a great way to push yourself out of your comfort zone and try a new colour combination. In the end, they are only clothes, you don't lose anything if you try something new and don't like the result - have a play in your wardrobe and see what you can come up with!
