Easy Postpartum Style: Trying to Hide a Lack of Sleep And Memorial Day Sales

Looking after a newborn involves some level of sleep deprivation. When you have two under 2 and a toddler to take care of in the day time, there isn't a lot of opportunity to catch up on missed sleep.

Some days you need to get out of the house no matter how little sleep you've had, so I thought I'd share two outfits I wore on some very sleep deprived days. I tried to use accessories to disguise the lack of sleep without my trusty BB cream - which I ran out of shortly after baby arrived. If you want some tips on makeup for tired mums, check out Anne's post!

What I wore:

Away From Blue | easy tied postpartum outfit kimono jeans nursing singlet

KimonoNew Look Petite print kimono (on sale, 70% off!)
SingletJeanswest maternity nursing cami
Jeans: Sass and Bide  'neon nights' jeans
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs black logo plaque ballet flats
BagRebecca Minkoff unlined saddle bag in cherry red

Why I wore it:

Despite wanting to stay in bed after a very disturbed night, I had to take toddler T out so I grabbed a combination I knew would work from my heavy repetition of it over my pregnancy; denim, singlet and kimono.

I like kimonos as they are a great accessory to make it look like you put a little more effort into your outfit, and the colour and print helps to distract away from a tired face after a broken 3 hours of sleep. Hiding behind sunnies works too!

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarers, printed kimono, breastfeeding singlet, Sass & Bide skinny jeans, black ballet flats, Rebecca Minkoff saddle bag.

Other ways to wear: navy kimono with a green top, breastfeeding singlet and a maxi skirt, Sass & Bide skinny jeans and tall boots, black ballet flats and a maxi dress, red saddle bag and a black outfit.

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Postpartum outfit: bright accessories to hide tired face

AwayFromTheBlue | Rebecca Minkoff unlined saddle bag in cherry red
SunniesRay-Ban new Wayfarers
ScarfLove Quotes knotted tassel linen scarf in sunshine yellow
TeeAtmos&Here navy stripe v-neck tee
Jeans: Sass and Bide  'neon nights' jeans
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs metallic mouse flats
BagRebecca Minkoff unlined saddle bag in cherry red

Why I wore it:

I wore this on another failed trip to replace my BB cream. Ended up buying a different brand to give it a try as my usual was still out of stock.

More hiding behind my sunglasses and the same denim jeans as in the outfit above - because hunting out a new pair of clean and ironed ones is a lot of work when you're just too tired. If they are still clean, they get worn again!

This time I added a bright scarf to my outfit as it was a little cooler in the morning and I hoped the cheerful yellow would reflect on my bare face and make it look a little brighter and more awake. At the very least the bright accessories would draw the focus away from the giant bags under my eyes ;)

In the end, while you do stare into those gorgeous little wide-awake-and-refusing-to-sleep newborn eyes at 2am and a part of you wonders why they just won't sleep....you can't help but smile and coo back at this beautiful little miracle staring up at you, excited and ready to play because he hasn't figured out the difference between night and day yet. Not every moment of life with baby is perfect, but every moment is fleeting. It's both a reason to treasure the good moments and something to remember to get you through the tough, sleepless moments!

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer (above), Love Quotes scarf, striped tee, Sass & Bide skinny jeans (above), gold mouse flats, Rebecca Minkoff saddle bag (above).

Other ways to wearyellow scarf and a navy dress, striped tee and a baby bump, Sass & Bide skinny jeans and Converse, gold mouse flats and a wrap dress, Rebecca Minkoff saddle bag and flares.

It's Memorial Day weekend in the US so there are a bunch of sales going on!

Happy shopping!

Postpartum Outfits: Striped Maxi Skirts, Rebecca Minkoff Cross Body Saddle Bag

Keeping things easy in the first few weeks post-baby by getting a little repetitive with my outfits. While I wore these striped maxi skirt outfits a few days apart, I thought I'd post them together on the blog. 2 different ways to wear very similar skirts.

What I wore:

SkirtAT by Atmos&Here Mars striped maxi skirt
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs black logo plaque ballet flats
BagRebecca Minkoff unlined saddle bag in cherry red

Why I wore it:

I really liked this outfit! Had plans to catch up with a friend and give her the maternity clothes I wouldn't be needing any more. Managed to get myself, toddler T and the baby all ready to go - then found out she was unwell and couldn't make it. Still, counting it as a win as we were all set to go on time for once!

I purchased this top in the third trimester, a size larger than I usually would so that it had space for the growing bump as well as working with a leftover baby belly in the early forth trimester. Seeing the photos though I wish I'd ordered my usual size, looks a little large here without the baby bump.

Last worn: wrap top, striped maxi skirt, black ballet flats, Rebecca Minkoff cherry red saddle bag.

Other ways to wearwrap top and denim shorts, striped maxi skirt and a graphic tee, black ballet flats with a black and grey outfit, Rebecca Minkoff cherry red saddle bag and jeans.

Great striped maxi skirts under $50:

What I wore:

TeeZalora Basics maroon stepped t-shirt
Skirt: Target black and white striped maxi skirt
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs black logo plaque ballet flats
BagRebecca Minkoff unlined saddle bag in cherry red

Why I wore it:

Wasn't as sure of this outfit as I was about the one above. We had to pop out and run errands and get groceries, and I hadn't thought about what to wear. I saw this red top that hadn't been worn in a while in my wardrobe and knew it would work with the striped maxi skirt, nice easy outfit. It wasn't until I grabbed my bag on the way out the door that I realised I was wearing red and maroon together, and wasn't sure if it worked. Didn't have time to change.

Not a combination I would have tried on my own, but I think it looks okay in the photos. Feel better about it after seeing the photos than I did wearing it!

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer, maroon tee, striped maxi skirt, black ballet flats (above), Rebecca Minkoff saddle bag (above).

Other ways to wearmaroon tee and skinny jeans, striped maxi skirt and a baby bump, black ballet flats and a printed skirt, red bag with a monochrome black outfit.

Postpartum Outfits: Stripes, Stretchy Skirts and Speedy Bandouliere Bag

Postpartum dressing is tricky, as your body reverses some of the changes that happened in pregnancy. You can't bounce back to your regular wardrobe right away, so stretchy and accommodating fabrics and waistbands are ideal for 'fourth trimester' post baby style!

What I wore:

AwayFromBlue | 2 weeks postpartum oxblood tee striped maxi skirt Louis Vuitton speedy bag

AwayFromTheBlue | Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere with stripes
Skirt: Target black and white striped maxi skirt
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

I really liked this outfit. Simple, comfortable, and perfect for our daily walk around the neighbourhood and having some friends over to meet and cuddle baby boy.

Every time I wear this tee I love it, I should wear it more. While it accommodated my bump in pregnancy, I much prefer the way it looks without a baby belly. The tee doesn't need ironing either so it is likely to be worn a lot more often now as I let some household tasks (okay, most of them...) slide as I adjust to life with two under 2.

Last worn: wine tee, striped maxi skirt, Havaianas, Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere.

Other ways to wearwine tee and skinny jeans, striped maxi skirt with a graphic tee and baby bump, Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere in the office.

Elastic waist maxi skirts under $50:

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Autumn Maxi Skirt Postpartum Outfit stripes purple cardi LV bag

Away From The Blue | Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene speedy bandouliere and a maxi skirt
JacketJeanswest Peggie kimono cardigan in purple mulberry marle
SingletAtmos & Here Oregon stripe tank (new purchase)
Skirt: Target grey marle maxi skirt
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs black logo plaque ballet flats (new purchase)
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

A slightly cooler morning meant a chance to layer, although I took the cardigan off fairly soon in the day. Brisbane is taking a while to welcome autumn temperatures.

Wore this out to check out a possible house. We started house hunting last year before baby boy was born and never found the perfect place. We didn't expect to resume house hunting so soon after baby was born but we'd found and viewed a promising place and asked some family to come along on our second visit to check it out and get some non sleep deprived opinions. We ultimately decided that while it was close to perfect, it wasn't quite perfect enough. So the house hunt continues, although at a much slower pace than before. Trying to attend open houses with two under 2 isn't the most relaxing thing to do and we are being a lot pickier about what we go to see.

The highlight of the day was seeing my sister and realising she was wearing a very similar outfit. We were both wearing singlets, stripes and a maxi skirt!

Last worn: purple cardi, grey maxi skirt, Louis Vuitton Speedy bandouliere (above). First time I've worn the shoes and the tank on the blog as they are recent purchases.

Other ways to wearpurple cardi and skinny jeans, grey maxi skirt for travel in the second trimester, Louis Vuitton Speedy bandouliere and a wrap dress.

Postpartum Outfits: Denim and Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandouliere

The unexpected continuation of Brisbane's summer temperatures well into autumn meant I was able to wear my denim shorts for much longer than anticipated. I was able to squeeze in another wear of my maternity skinny jeans on a slightly cooler day too though.

What I wore:

JacketNew Look Petite print kimono (on sale, 70% off!)
SingletJeanswest maternity nursing cami
Shorts: Cotton On blue denim shorts
Shoes: slim gold Havaianas
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

Wore this for a morning stroll by the sea and some fish and chips for lunch. It was a little windy, but still a nice day for a walk and warm enough for shorts. It was lovely to get out and have a change of scenery. The little neighbourhood walks we were doing the first few days are good to get out of the house, but nothing beats looking at and listening to the waves.

Last worn: blue printed kimono, black maternity singlet, denim shorts, gold Havaianas, Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere.

Other ways to wearblue printed kimono and green top, black maternity singlet and floral kimono, denim shorts and a tunic dress, Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere in the office.

What I wore:

Necklace: custom Cooper charm by Silhoupette
Tee: Spectrum basic v-neck tee in grey marl
JeansJeanswest maternity super skinny jeans in antique blue
ShoesMarc by Marc Jacobs studded mouse flats in grey (on sale in black)
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

First time I've worn makeup since baby's arrival! When toddler T was born I'd packed my makeup in my hospital bag thinking I'd want to look nice for photos with family in the hospital...this time around I knew it would be a while before I wanted to pick up a makeup brush.

The makeup was because we were having our newborn photoshoot, and I wanted to get some family pictures like we did when toddler T was a newborn. We booked it in for when baby boy was just under 3 weeks old, about the same age his big brother had been. We went with the same photographer we did last time and I highly recommend him if you're in South East Queensland. Although baby boy was extremely unsettled and toddler T decided to act shy in front of a camera for the first time ever, we still got some great shots. More thanks to the skill of the photographer than the willingness of the photo subjects, ha! We rewarded ourselves afterwards with lunch and a trip to Ikea.

Last worn: grey tee, maternity skinny jeans, studded mouse flats, Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere (above).

Other ways to weargrey tee and a maxi skirt, maternity skinny jeans for travel, studded mouse flats and a wrap dress, Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere and a wrap dress.

Postpartum Outfits: Stripes and Maxi Skirts

I've been eager to get back into my regular wardrobe post-baby. My third trimester capsule wardrobe was fun, but I really was looking forward to having a bigger selection of clothes again.

Unfortunately, at two weeks postpartum you can't quite fit into everything in your wardrobe. Stretchy fabrics are the way to go! They are extremely comfortable too.

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Postpartum outfit stretchy stripe tee maxi skirt Balenciaga bag

AwayFromTheBlue | Balenciaga giant hardware Day bag in 2009 tempete
SunglassesRay-Ban new Wayfarers
TeeAtmos&Here oversized stripe tee
SkirtJeanswest plain jersey black maxi skirt
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagBalenciaga giant hardware Day bag in 2009 tempete

Why I wore it:

Just a heads up that I will be wearing these tees a lot! I have this striped tee in black and burgundy and grey...when I see something I like I buy multiples. They are super soft and don't need ironing so they are on high rotation at the moment. Plus the stretchy factor works nicely post-baby with all the extra curves to be covered.

Wore this out to take baby boy to a quick checkup, and to grab some lunch.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer, striped tee, black maxi skirt, Havaianas, Balenciaga Tempete Day bag.

Other ways to wearstriped tee and tartan scarf, black maxi skirt and a graphic teeBalenciaga Tempete Day bag and denim shorts.

More Maxi Skirts Under $50:

What I wore:

Away From Blue | nursing friendly maxi skirt outfit colour block black singlet

SunglassesRay-Ban new Wayfarers
SingletJeanswest maternity nursing cami
SkirtAsos colour block maxi skirt in red
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagLouis Vuitton Damier Ebene 30 speedy bandouliere

Why I wore it:

Was so happy to be able to wear this maxi skirt again, even if I did go the very boring route and wear it with a breastfeeding singlet. This skirt was too long worn under the baby bump and never looked right worn above the bump so I've not been able to wear it since October.

Wore this out to attend a child health clinic appointment with baby boy. I was feeling happy and confident in my outfit until I looked down halfway through the day and saw baby had added a little something to it....thankfully after I took photos, but sadly while we were out in public!

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarers (above), breastfeeding singlet, colour block maxi skirt, Havaianas (above), Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandouliere.

Other ways to wearblack singlet and black skirt, colour block maxi skirt for a night out, Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandouliere and a wrap dress.

Postpartum Style: Babywearing Outfits

With two under 2, adjusting to life outside the hospital has been tricky. Walking is as good an exercise postpartum as it was in pregnancy, so we try get out of the house at least once a day to walk Cooper. His little legs appreciate the stretch, even if we don't achieve it every day.

I thought I'd share two of my simple baby wearing outfits with you, for a slow and small walk around the neighbourhood with the boys. No accessories, messy mum-bun and a very tired makeup-free face, but it's nice to document the unpolished side of life, and celebrate being able to get out of the house!

What I wore:

Singlet: Best & Less blue stripe breastfeeding singlet
Shorts: Cotton On blue denim shorts
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs

Why I wore it:

This was actually what I wore for my first solo outing with all the boys. We didn't manage to complete our usual long walk, but we did get out the house and entertained Cooper and Toddler T for a while so I counted it a success.

Despite being April and autumn in Queensland, Brisbane was still pretty warm. I'd assumed with an autumn baby that I'd be dressing for autumn temperatures post baby, and packed away all my shorts thinking I wouldn't need them for a while! I haven't been able to find all of them, but did find this pair and it was nice to wear something non-maternity for a change.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer, breastfeeding singlet, denim shorts, Havaianas.

Other ways to wearbreastfeeding singlet and newborn baby T, denim shorts and a striped tunic.

What I wore:

SunglassesRay-Ban new Wayfarers
CarrierErgobaby original carrier
Singlet: Best & Less blue stripe breastfeeding singlet
SkirtJeanswest plain jersey black maxi skirt
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs

Why I wore it:

Another family walk around the neighbourhood. While I'm wearing the same nursing top as I did a few days before (above), I wore a maxi skirt instead of denim shorts. Comfortable, simple and easy to wear outfits like this are ideal for babywearing. I prefer to avoid anything with buttons or zips when I have a baby strapped to me.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarer (above), blue breastfeeding singlet (above), black maxi skirt, Havaianas (above).

Postpartum Outfits: Singlets, Shorts and Kimonos

I've shared the last of my pregnancy photos on the blog, and our baby boy has arrived, so now I get to share my postpartum style with you. I use the word 'style' pretty loosely!

When you have a newborn, your world revolves around them and getting dressed each day isn't always manageable, or something instagram or blog worthy! But with two boys under two, there are some days you do have to get out of the house and some even better days where you manage to wear something clean you feel good in. I'll be sharing some of those pictures on the blog when I can.

The anticipated autumn weather hadn't arrived with the changing of the seasons, so my first few trips out I stuck with my summer pregnancy uniform - shorts, singlet and kimono. Just wearing nursing singlets instead of maternity singlets.

What I wore:

Away From Blue | Postpartum Style: kimono, nursing singlet, denim shorts, Bal day bag

AwayFromTheBlue | Balenciaga giant hardware Day bag in 2009 tempete
SingletJeanswest maternity nursing cami
ShortsJeanswest Georgie maternity boyfriend shorts (available in non-maternity also)
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagBalenciaga giant hardware Day bag in 2009 tempete

Why I wore it:

Wore this for one of our first trips out post-baby! Had to stop by our local child health clinic after we were discharged from hospital to get baby boy enrolled and ask some questions. When toddler T was a baby we spent a lot of time at the clinic, getting lots of help, advice, going to free sessions and having weekly weigh-ins. I've shared before what a great free service it is - we really are so lucky to be able to drop by any day of the week in the newborn days.

Last worn: Ray-Ban Wayfarers, Somedays Lovin' kimono, Jeanswest breastfeeding singlet, maternity boyfriend shorts, Havaianas, Balenciaga day bag.

Other ways to wearSomedays Lovin' kimono and a maxi skirt, Jeanswest breastfeeding singlet and skinny jeans, maternity boyfriend shorts and LV speedy bag, Balenciaga day bag and maxi dresses.

Singlet: Best and Less black breastfeeding singlet
ShortsJeanswest Georgie maternity boyfriend shorts (available in non-maternity also)
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
BagBalenciaga giant hardware Day bag in 2009 tempete

Why I wore it:

Wore this out for a trip to the local ABA (Australian Breastfeeding Association) meeting. We'd had an appointment scheduled for later that day that was cancelled, so we were able to go to the meeting at the last minute. I was pretty happy as the session was about baby massage, which is a lot of fun for all involved. Even if toddler T wanted to play with the toys instead and baby boy slept...I practiced the techniques on a nearby doll!

Baby's Arrival and Postpartum Hospital Style

Thank you all for your sweet comments and congratulations on the arrival of our second beautiful baby boy. Just like I did when baby T was born, thought I'd do a little wrap-up post here for those who don't follow me on instagram.

Baby boy had a very speedy arrival into the world! Baby T's birth was fast for a first time but at least then we had time to finalise the admission paperwork before things really got started. This time around I was answering the admission questions with my newborn baby in my arms! I'd been regularly waking for the past week or so with contractions around 3 am that eventually stopped every time, so I wasn't sure if this was another false alarm at first, and stayed for a while at home.

I foolishly thought that the midwife was just being encouraging when we arrived and she suggested that it wouldn't be long before baby arrived. We actually made it to hospital just in time. I took her a little more seriously when I had to start pushing and she reassured me that they could deliver the baby themselves if the on-call obstetrician didn't arrive in time. He did. Just! While baby surprised us all and arrived before my OB had returned from her holidays, the lead midwife was the same one who had helped us deliver baby T, so it was really special having her there.

Wanted to share my 'first days with a newborn' outfits that I posted on instagram. To show that you that everyone's different post-baby and you shouldn't set overly high expectations on yourself. Just relax and enjoy your baby! They don't care what you wear, they just want lots of love and cuddles.

There were a few comments left on the blog, especially near the end of the third trimester, where people commented that they were surprised I wasn't wearing trackie dacks/sweats/joggers or pyjamas in my pregnancy. Part of that was having the third trimester capsule wardrobe to make dressing easy, and also because I knew that the comfy clothes would become my 'uniform' in the newborn days. In pregnancy you want to be comfortable yet you still have some energy to put into picking nice outfits. With a newborn, your focus is on them only. Although you might try find clean clothes to wear at least, style is not a priority!

What I wore:

Singlet: Best and Less red stripe breastfeeding singlet
PantsJuicy Couture original drawstring pant in 'Silver Lining'
Bracelets: the usual

Why I wore it:

This was my 'fancy' outfit for visits from extended family. I packed and wore my pyjamas most of the time in hospital, but kept a clean nursing singlet and pair of trackie dacks for when extended family members came by to say hello and meet baby. In the early days with a newborn, comfort is key, so this is as 'pulled together' as I looked.

Last worn: trackie dacks. (Can't find a pic of this singlet on the blog, although it's an old one).

What I Packed in My Hospital Bag (Second Time Around)

What I wore:

JacketNew Look Petite print kimono (on sale, 70% off!)
NecklaceTai gold alphabet necklace
TankJeanswest Carla maternity cut out tank (non-maternity version)
ShortsJeanswest maternity rolled up shorts
Shoesblack slim Havaianas thongs
Bracelets: the usual

Why I wore it:

This was what I wore to take baby home from hospital, and also what I wore while I was in labour! I always lay my clothes out the night before, so when I went into labour in the early hours of the morning I thankfully had some clothes to grab. I didn't want to be walking through the main hospital in my pyjamas!

I was pleased I'd taken the time at home to put some clothes on. When we got to the hospital the contractions were so strong and fast as I'd hit transition in the car. It was drawing a lot of attention as I had to keep stopping as we walked to concentrate on getting through every contraction. They really shouldn't have the maternity ward at the back of the hospital...I lost count of how many staff members offered hubby a wheelchair to get me to the birth suite!

It was nice to have some 'normal' clothes with me to change into to take baby boy home too, although as soon as we got home it was back to pyjamas again ;)

Last worn: blue kimono, maternity tank, denim shorts, Havaianas.

Monthly Purchases: April

You gave me some positive feedback for my monthly purchase wrap up for January/February so I thought I'd do one again showing what I bought in April and how I've worn it. (I didn't buy anything in March as I was in my final month of pregnancy). While I haven't had a chance to put blog posts together, I've been sharing my outfit pics on instagram so I can still show the ways I've been wearing what I bought.

I certainly made up for not shopping in March! There was a bag I'd had my eye on at Shopbop and when the friends and family sale came along I couldn't resist picking up a few other things too with an extra 25% off.

What I Bought in April

In the video:

Not in the video:

This tank was a last minute add on at the Iconic. I picked up a couple undies in their sale and was 50 cents away from free shipping. Instead of paying $7.95 just for shipping...I paid $9.98 and got the tank and free shipping! You can never have too many stripes.

How I Wore It:

AwayFromBlue | April Purchases Striped Tank RM red saddle bag

I didn't do too badly wearing everything. I have a goal of wearing things I buy at least twice in the month after I've bought it, so that I'm making sure I'm buying things I'll actually wear. The only thing I haven't worn is the necklace which is to be expected as I'm breastfeeding and try to avoid necklaces while baby's in the uncoordinated newborn phase. I know I'll be wearing it soon.

Despite not getting out the house every day with a newborn, and figuring out postpartum dressing the second time around, I managed to wear everything else twice or more. I'm sure people who follow me on instagram are getting really bored of seeing that Rebecca Minkoff bag now...but it's the perfect size and goes with everything! Being crossbody, it's perfect for looking after two boys under 2 as well!
